The Marlton Sun

A piece of American history in
memory of all those who lost
their lives in the attacks of Sept.
11, 2001, will forever be housed in
Evesham Township.
Last week, a liaison to the gov-
ernors office presented Evesham
Township officials with one of
100 flags flown over the 9/11 Me-
morial in New York City at
Ground Zero this past Sept. 11.
The flags were split evenly be-
tween New York and New Jersey.
Mayor Randy Brown accepted
the flag from Rich DeRose on be-
half of the township council. The
flag cannot be flown, Brown said,
but will be on display for all those
who wish to see it in the glass
case in the lobby of the municipal
complex.
It will be moved to a more se-
cure location in the future, he
said.
DeRose shook hands with re-
turning veteran Brian Worthing-
ton.
DeRose, also a veteran of the
U.S. Army, thanked Worthington
for his service to the country and
showed him the flag. The town-
ship council honored Worthing-
ton for two successful tours of
duty with the U.S. Marine Corp.
His brother, Kevin, was also
honored, but was not at the meet-
ing as he was in North Carolina
at the time.
Worthington and his brother
both knew the day after Sept. 11,
2001, they would serve their coun-
try by enlisting in the armed
forces, he said. He served his first
tour in Cuba at Guantanamo Bay
and then his second tour all over
the Middle East.
I could not have picked a bet-
ter night to present this flag with
a fellow veteran in attendance,
DeRose said.
The decision to present Eve-
sham Township with one of the
historic flags came as a bit of a
surprise, Brown said, as DeRose
only contacted him a week before
to let him know that the township
had been selected by the state for
the honor.
This town deserves one of
these flags because of the people
you see standing before you
tonight, Brown said, pointing to
DeRose, Worthington and Leslie

Voters approved the Eve-
sham Fire Districts $8.6 mil-
lion 2012 budget by an over-
whelming margin of 307-32.
The results are unofficial, but
most likely will not change
when certified.
The tax rate will remain flat
at the 2011 rate and will
raise about $6.89 million in
taxes for the district, business
manager Paul Thomas report-
ed.
Thomas Conkey, the boards
vice president, and commis-
sioner Mark Scian, both re-
tained their seats after run-
ning unopposed in the elec-
tion. Both seats are for three
years and will expire in 2015.
Conkey received 289 votes
and Scian received 264.
The fire district published a
thank you letter to township
voters for supporting the budg-
et.
Numerous residents came
out in support of the budget
and an overwhelming majori-
ty approved the organization's
use of taxpayer dollars to ful-
fill our mission in the commu-
nity. In the coming year, we
will continue to provide the
same high level of fire, rescue,

Evesham Township is home to
Leroy Homer Jr., one of the pilots
on the tragic United Airlines
Flight 93 that crashed into an
open field in Shanksville, Pa.,
after it had been hijacked by four
al-Qaeda terrorists on Sept. 11,
2001.
Homer was flying with Capt.
Jason M. Dahl that morning.
Passengers on the flight, after
learning of the attacks on the
World Trade Center and the Pen-

to have attempted to forcefully
take back the airplane, which led
to a struggle and, ultimately, the
plane crashing into the

in our opinion
O
n the surface, two bills recent-
ly introduced in Congress
make sense. They would re-
strict the number of fees airlines
could charge. After all, who hasnt
been on a plane where everyone is
wrestling to get overhead storage
space for their 73 carry-on bags they
brought to avoid baggage fees?
Problem is, this is America, and
America has achieved economic great-
ness because it allows, for the most
part, businesses to compete without
many rules. Once government gets
into regulating things that dont relate
to, for example, safety, the whole sys-
tem gets messed up.
Naturally, the airlines arent in favor
of these bills. Some of them already
waive baggage fees for one or two
pieces.
Others correctly point out that,
charging fees, while keeping fares
lower, gives consumers a choice. In-
deed, if you travel without checked
bags, you probably would opt for the
airlines that offer lower fares, but
charge for checked baggage. Its less
money out of their pockets for the
same service they would receive on
any airline.
Congressional supporters of the
bills point out that consumers dont
like the fees. Well, of course, they
dont. No one likes fees.
If Congress would check, were sure
it would find that people dont like
high airline ticket prices, either. Or, in
keeping with the air travel theme,
parking rates that rise as you get clos-
er or more convenient parking spots at
an airport. Or high-priced food in air-
port restaurants.
Sure, some air travellers can feel
like they are being nickeled and dimed
to death. But its their choice to fly the
airlines that charge these fees. There
are any number of ways to avoid the
fees, they just choose not to do so.
This is a business model, pricing
choice. Its what keeps businesses
competitive. Congress should stay
away.
Keep air fee bills grounded
Congress should let the free enterprise system work
Hands off private business
Congress has better things to do with
its time than to get involved with air-
line fees. Let consumers make choic-
es and the airlines make business
decisions.

Evesham Fire-Rescue and the Evesham
Police Department were presented with a
Meritorious Service Award for their ac-
tions on Nov. 29.
That day, members of the police and fire
departments entered frigid waters at the
intersection of Route 73 and Evesham
Road to rescue a victim who was trapped in
her car after it left the roadway and be-
came submerged in 10 feet of water. From
the time of the 9-1-1 call, the victim was re-
moved from her submerged vehicle in six
minutes and CPR was performed, but un-
fortunately, the victim succumbed to her
injuries.
Fire department members Ryan Pier-
son, Mike Merkowsky, Deputy Chief Mark
Westcott, Pete Clifford, Scott Freedman
and Lt. John Behnke accepted the award.
Firefighters Pierson, Merkowsky and
Freedman entered the water that day;
Westcott and Behnke coordinated the res-
cue effort and were present to accept the
award for the other 15 members of the fire
department who participated in the rescue
effort that day.
The police department members recog-
nized for their efforts that day were Sgt.
Joe Friel, Officers Jack Armstrong, Justin
Graff, Matt Divito, Tom Capecci and
Christopher Cheeseman.
Also honored were Shamong Township
residents Michael and Jeana Master, who
were passing by that day. Michael jumped
into the water to attempt a rescue while
Jeana dialed 9-1-1.

By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Marlton Sun
The township council suspend-
ed a new insurance contribution
program for non-union employ-
ees in Evesham in the spirit of
fairness.
Mayor Randy Brown suspend-
ed the ordinance to ensure that
the non-union employees current-
ly pay the same health insurance
benefit costs as their union
brethren.
In December, members of the
township council unanimously
agreed to have all township em-
ployees pay between 20 and 30
percent of their health benefit
costs, which was supposed to
start on Jan. 1.
Brown said the council did not
envision union employees still
being without contracts in the
township.
The township decided to re-
quire employees in the states
family health insurance plan to
pay 30 percent approximately
$432 a month of their health
care premiums. An employee in
the single plus plan will pay 20
percent or $114 a month of
their health care premiums.
Currently employees only pay
1.5 percent of their gross salary to
their health care plan.
However, Brown reported the
union employees arent yet sub-
ject to the new insurance costs be-
cause they are still without con-
tracts. Without contracts, Brown
said they cannot legally be sub-
jected to the new insurance costs.
There are 57 full-time union
employees who are still paying
just 1.5 percent for their health
care premiums, Brown said. This
does not include Evesham Town-
ship police officers, as they are
currently under contract.
Im stunned that were cur-
rently 15 months without con-
tracts for our union employees,
Brown said.
The ordinance was suspended
so 30 non-union employees who
all have contracts do not have to
contribute at the new rate for
their health care premiums.
The ordinance will be suspend-
ed for the next 120 days or until
new contracts can be agreed upon
with union employees.
In 2011, Gov. Christie signed a
bill that required all state employ-
ees to pay between 3 to 35 percent
for their health care benefits.
In other township news:
The township council appoint-
ed three commissioners and a
secretary to serve its new self-in-
surance fund.
William Cromie, Thomas
Shanahan and Diana DiCicco will
serve as insurance fund commis-
sioners with two-year terms.
Carmella Bonfrisco will be ap-
pointed secretary of the fund.
Brown said the new self-insur-
ance program would begin on
March 1.
The township will take all of
the money that it currently pays
for health insurance premiums
and put it into a large employee
pool. The township will hire a
third party company to manage
the pool of insurance premium
money. The way the program
would work is that an employee
would put in a claim for a health
cause and it would be taken out of
the employee pool.
The township would cover the
insurance premium costs until
the employee reaches a certain
threshold and then the insurance
policy would begin for the em-
ployee. Its basically as if the
township is creating its own in-
surance company.
