Homework: Topic8: Sources of Magnetic Fields [Chap. 19] Explanation: Problems are divided into two groups.

Numbers in parentheses, e.g. (10) are Exercises. Relatively simple applications of basic definitions and basic laws. These are for student practice. Numbers in brackets, e.g. [10], are assigned problems. These are problems similar in level of difficulty to test problems. Numbers in curly brackets, e.g. {10} are challenging problems. Exercises:
(1) We want to produce a magnetic field of magnitude 4.00 x 10-4 T at a distance of 0.05 m from a long straight wire. A) What current is required to produce this field? B) With the current found in part (a), what is the magnitude of the field at a distance of 0.1 m from the wire? At 0.2 m? (3) Two long, parallel wires are separated by a distance of 0.10 m .The force per unit length that each wire exerts on the other is 4.0 x 10-5 N/m, and the wires repel each other. If the current in one wire is 2.0 A, a) what is the current in the second wire? b) are the two currents in the same or in opposite directions? Ans. a) 10.0 A ; b) Opposite (4) A closely wound coil has a diameter of 18.0 cm and carries a current of 2.50 A. How many turns does it have if the magnetic field at the center of the coil is 2.09 x 10-4T? Ans. 12 turns (5) A solenoid is to be designed to produce a magnetic field of 0.180 T at its center. The radius is to be 2.50 cm and the length is 50.0 cm, and the available wire can carry a maximum current of 10.0 A. a) What is the minimum number of turns per unit length the solenoid must have? b) What total length of wire is required? [1] A long, horizontal wire AB rests on the surface of a table. Another wire CD vertically above the first is 0.40 m long and is free to slide up and down on the two vertical metal guides C and D. The two wires are connected through the sliding contacts and carry a current 9of 30.0 A. The mass per unit length of the wire CD is 5.00 x 10 -3 kg/m. At what height h will wire CD be in equilibrium? Ans. 3.67 mm [2] The figure shows an end view of two long, parallel wires perpendicular to the xy plane, each carrying a current I, but in opposite directions. a) Copy the diagram, and show by vectors the B field of each wire and the resultant B field at point P. b) Derive the expression for the magnitude of B at any point on the x-axis in terms of the coordinate x of the point. What is the directions of B? c) Sketch a graph of the magnitude of B at points on the x-axis for 0 x 2a.
