Hendrickson Scholarship in the amount of $1000.00. Each female applicant must be a junior or senior in high school or a freshman in college and be a current certified member of the Morris County USBC Youth association for the past 3 years. She must have compiled a youth certified bowling record, in addition to displaying solid scholastic aptitude and school/community involvement. The recipient cannot have competed at any time in a professional bowling tournament (excluding competition as an amateur in a ProAm). Applications can be obtained by the coaches in the centers where the girls bowl. It is not uncommon for people to take some time off bowling, and when their situation changes, return to our great sport. Such is the case of Dan Muken, Randolph, who, according to his team mate and friend, Pete Harris, bowled some 50-plus years ago at Creamos along with John Turner, Les Mills and Harris. Muken was on a team in a mens league that came in first every year. Their team won a state championship. Dan took a vacation from bowling for 40 years, and returned six years ago. Why? Because I was in my own retail business and that took up my time. He owned and ran stores specializing in toys and magic. At one point, he had three stores and would get home late every night. So bowling had to go onto the back burner. To this day he still performs magic for parties, weddings, etc. He even did a television appearance when the rapper Run DMC had a show on the MTV network. In one episode Dan appeared as a magician inspiring a young boy to get into performing magic. But that was then. You could say the magic entered his comeback, as on January 11 of last year he rolled his first 300, this in the Lakeland Industrial League at Circle Lanes. And one year and one day later he rolled an 826 series on January 12. Did he know he was headed for the octo-series? Going, into the third game. I started to add up the first two games and stopped myself. I just wanted to keep bowling. I was excited when it was over. Dan has already given something back to bowling by starting up two senior leagues at Circle Lanes. Two of the bowlers are ages 94 and 96.
Idle bowling thoughts. Don Carter was remembered well at his death at 85. Carter was one of those once in a century athletes who not only lit up every room he ever entered but will keep an eternal light on bowling. I have always put Carter at the top of my list as the greatest bowler of all time. And that is no lessoning of my respect and admiration for many others but Carter was the king of the bowling castle in his era. In private or public talks his toughest competitors all placed him in hallowed territory. Not surprising since he was best known for consistently outrolling his top rated opposition. You can ask no more of any great athlete. When Joe Paterno passed away a few of the bio clips showed a youthful Paterno being interviewed by an equally young Schenkel when Chris was starting his broadcasting career and Paterno was an Ivy League quarterback. Schenkel always noted how much he learned from Paterno for so many years. And Don Imus, one of the most honored broadcasters in history, had deep praise for the telecast of the USBC Masters tourney, and he also recalled how he used to watch the bowling telecasts hosted by Schenkel and Bo Burton decades ago. Bowling always has been the most of the charitable of sports, coming to the aid of individuals as well as most of the largest needy organizations. That's fine, but at times, maybe bowling's needs should receive as much attention. Mike Aulby's goal always was to make his game just a little bit better---and he accomplished that with class.
If a lot of people put up a little entry fee then you can have big money tournaments a lot easier than having two deep pocketed competitors put up a million apiece for a winner take all battle. Jim Sturm's great experience in major positions in bowling in the trenches of instruction and desk of a small bowling center as proprietor to the top posts and membership groups make him a natural for his new position as the first ever Executive Director of Bowling for the Circus Circus, the Eldorado and Silver Legacy Hotel and Casino properties in Reno, longtime sponsors and boosters of bowling and National Bowling Stadium activities. Come to think of it, isn't it time one or more of Atlantic City's Casinos installed a bowling center that could host some of the nation's featured tournaments---or some new ones. With more and more high paying events being conducted overseas it would pay for bowlers to learn what the foreign money up for grabs pays off in American cash. You seldom see a bowler's face beam with much happiness than the moment after he or she realizes they have just been gifted with a new bowling ball. The closer the so called average or lower scoring bowler gets to the scoring area of the top bowlers the less respect is given to high scoring. Want to be well informed? Read bowling books, bowling rules, and bowling league and tournament entry blanks, including all the small print. And it is just common sense to gobble up your local and national bowling publications.

John Draney 289-738, Joe Malyack 266-715, Jaylin Floyd 242-698 in Youth Travel Acton
By Vince Albrecht BOONTON, NJ Holidays Joe Malyack triggered a series of high rollers in the Stan Niemiec Youth Travel League by stringing the first nine in his opening game before leaving the 4-6 and finished with a sizzling 266; Joe remained sharp, adding scores of 226 and 223 for a 715 set, a tremendous afternoon for the DePaul freshman; Kevin Macchia closed with 215, Brian Rizzi had 198, 196 and Emily Ostapczuk 171 as pace-setting Holiday defeated Montvale, 5-2; deuces for Montvale came from Nick Rossi 216 and Katie Didonato 211. As terrific as Malyacks performance was, Bowler City Is John Draney eclipsed it in game two by striking to his eleventh delivery where he left a 10-pin which he converted for 289, the leagues high single. John sandwiched the big game with scores of 231 and 218 for 738, also a league best to date. Although teammates Rob Gilbert, Jr and Ryan Perez chipped in with 215, 214-621 and 246, 201-604 respectively, the best BC I could manage was three of seven points against Fair Lawn. The latter closed to within six points of league-leading Holiday as anchor Jaylin Floyd continued to pound the pins, scoring impressively with 230-226-242-698; Jonmikal Sepero, in his finest outing, tripped the plastics with 213, 222; Hunter Perry tossed three over-average games and Katrina Plaszky added one of her own for Fair Lawn. In other matches, Boonton leapfrogged to fourth place, sweeping past Bowler City IV, 2668-2470. Anchor Justin Puchalski punished the maples with 213, 223 and Karl Kattermann added 215, 200. Also aiding the triumph were Adam Gelvans 181 and Rose Feiwels well over average 142. High for BC IV was Deanna Jeune with 160 while Louis Ferrante came through with two above average games. Rounding out the days action, Bowler City II escaped the cellar by turning back Bowler City III, 2691-2619. BC IIs James Kane almost doubled his opening game by exploding with a 224, best on the pair. Teammates Welmer Paguay had 195-543, Kyle Schellberg 183-522 and Eric Grunfeld 188. BC IIIs Patrick Sucero tallied 188-500, Kristin Kane 160 and Tiffany Sucero 154.
