Saturday the 3rd of December 2011 saw the celebration of the opening of the Flowerdale Community House new building. More than 70 people gathered to celebrate the opening of this wonderful building which has been built on the former Jarara Community Centre site in Silver Creek Road. The completion of the building celebrated 2 years of hard work and the house was a symbol to commemorate what weve done; what weve achieved together said Paula Turner in her speech. The Flowerdale Community House began 10 to 12 years ago, when a small group of local women wanted to address problems for isolation for local residents. With a growing variety of classes, interests group, classes and activities, three staff and the Senior Co-ordinator, the house is now accommodated in what is believed to be one of only three purpose built community houses in Australia. Member for McEwen, Rob Mitchell, who was there for the official opening, described the house as an absolutely magnificent building to be in. He said it would help provide services and advice to members of the community looking for training and courses to help them gain employment, access to a range of health and other services and an opportunity for people to come together.

Debbie Schulz has been an active part of the Committee since well before the fires of 2009. As someone who is great at dealing with bureaucracy, we will feel the loss of Deb on our Committee. Astute and observant, the Community House and the Flowerdale Community have benefitted many times, over the years, from her clearly expressed wisdom. She will be greatly missed. These three ladies have helped to shape a vital part of Flowerdales history. They have been part of a greater vision and have helped to mould the Community House into the wonderful community asset it is today. Their kindness will linger in our memories for many years to come. Thank you Julie, Sharon and Deb.

Packed the kids and dogs in the car. Headed to the Rec. Arked up the Barbie. Pulled on the tennis shoes. Got the kids ready for egg and spoon races, horseshoe toss, sack race, gumboot throw. Found a partner for the three-legged race. Cheered as our local awards were given out. Cooled down under the sprinklers. Relaxed in a shady spot with our friends. Enjoyed a few quiet drinks. Taped our feet to the music of our locals and the Afterglow boys. Caught up with the friends and neighbours. Saw the line up of utes proudly bearing their flags. Met Sandro, our Aussie Day Ambassador. Raised the Flag. And thought to ourselves.Aussie Day in Flowerdale It doesnt get much better than this

Not only a great day for the families with games such as longest throw (84metres!) and nearest the stump, there was a radar for measuring bowling speeds and Level 3 coach Steve Atkins, from North Melbourne CC gave free coaching for all and everyone had the opportunity to face up to the bowling machine. The day didnt go all Flowerdales way with the All Stars 3/110 defeating Flowerdale 105. Best performances were Reece Emmins 46 not out and Chris Wilsher 31 with the bat and Ash Cook took 1 for 11 with the ball. Although Flowerdale didnt win the cricket it did clean up in the raffle with Peter Mackrell winning 1st prize, a bat signed by Ricky Ponting, 2nd prize went to Jaime Helmot, a bat signed by the Victorian Womens cricket side and Wally Moore won 3rd prize , a hamper. The cricket was good quality and the crowd enjoyed some big hitting with twenty one 4s and six 6s hit for the day.

Seventeen is a lucky number for Flowerdale. At about 5 pm on Tuesday 24 January, a grass fire started on a property behind the primary school. At this stage its not known what started the fire, but it burnt about 20 acres before it was contained. It was a tremendous response from all brigades to get the incident under control in difficult and windy conditions on the day. Luckily, because the wind was directed away from the school, it was not in real danger. And the number? Including Flowerdales tankers and vehicle, seventeen appliances turned out. The new Fire Station is another step closer, as Council has advertised our planning permit application. Flowerdale Brigade is hoping that the new station will be ready by next fire season. The entire brigade was very saddened to learn of the death of our long-time brigade member and friend, David Long. David was not only a firie but a skilled Incident Controller who played a vital role during the fires of February 2009. None of us will ever forget how he kept his kind and calm manner, but still delivered bad jokes, while he carried out his role at the Incident Control Centre in Yea at that time. The entire community showed our appreciation for David at a memorial service in Yea on 9 January. As a member of Flowerdale Brigade said, It was a send-off that David would have been proud of. Lots of anecdotes about a man who had such a wry and warped sense of humour! Next training and meeting at the Fire Station. Training is on the first and third Sundays, and the brigade meeting is on the first Tuesday. TrainingSunday 5th and 19th February, 9.00am MeetingTuesday 7th February, 7.30 pm. This information evening has been organised by the Flowerdale Environment Work Engine to provide all local residents with an opportunity to learn how to safely and responsibly use herbicide chemicals. Herbicides are a powerful tool in the management of weeds, however a basic knowledge of how they work, requirements for effective use and techniques for minimising risks to the user and environment are essential. What type of application will suit your needs? What is the difference between woody and broadleaf herbicides? What is wetting agent used for? What is my legal responsibility? These and many other questions will be answered on the night. This course provides information that all land managers (large or small) should be familiar with when applying herbicides in our environment. We are fortunate to have Kevin Chandler, who has a broad knowledge of the application of chemicals to present this evening. Please take advantage of this great opportunity considering spray equipment will be available for community use, places are limited, so dont miss out! We urge anyone who has or is using farm or garden chemicals to attend this important information evening at no cost.
RSVP by the 24th of February, by emailing or calling Trent or Vikki Patten on trent1966@bigpond.com or 5780 2333.
