cereplast to establish italian
bioplastics production unit
uS-based cereplast is to set
up a bioplastics compounding
operation at Assisi in italy to
enable it to tap into the
growing European bioplastics
market.
currently, 85% of our
business is based in Europe.
we believe this new plant will
create effciencies, reduce
transportation costs and
minimise risks in our busi-
ness, said cereplast chair-
man and cEo Frederic Scheer.
According to trade associa-
tion European Bioplastics, the
market for bioplastics in the
European union is expected to
amount to around 1m tonnes
by 2014.
cereplast plans to have a
total European production
capacity of around 100,000
tonnes, which will be achieved
in several stages. A 50,000
tonne frst phase is expected to
be in operation in late 2012,
with the second phase
currently scheduled for 2013.
The company has ear-
marked an investment of
between E10m and E12m for
the project, which will be
fnanced by local and regional
italian institutions. Some
italian state funding will also
be secured.
The plant will be developed
on the site of a former
industrial facility and is
expected to occupy around
12,000 m

. cereplast has not
disclosed what types of
bioplastics resins it will be
making at the facility. its
product line currently includes
compostable bio-based resins
as well as compounds based
on blends of traditional and
renewable polymers.
The investment will make
italy a key player in the
European bioplastics market;
the country is already home to
novamont, which is one of the
pioneers in bioplastics
production with a capacity of
around 80,000 tonnes and sales
of E88m. in January, novamont

signifcant investments in the
uS, which it described as a key
market for bioplastics.

Phthalates put under pressure
The phthalate plasticizers business has
just suffered a double blow in quick
succession. On 3 May, the French National
Assembly unexpectedly voted (by 236 votes
to 222) to adopt a proposal to ban the
manufacture, import, sale or offer of
products containing phthalates, parabens
and alkylphenols, because of their alleged
endocrine-disrupting activity. On the same
day, the Danish Environmental Protection
Agency (MIM) announced plans to
introduce a national ban on the use of four
phthalates in articles used indoors and
those that come into contact with mucus
membranes.
The French proposal had been opposed
by the Sarkozy government, with a
majority of stakeholders opposing a
blanket ban during the parliamentary
committee stages. However, it went
through with support from the left-wing
opposition and former defence minister
Herv Morins centre-right Nouveau
Centre group. Deputy Yvan Lachaud, who
proposed the law, himself expressed
surprise at the outcome.
According to Maggie Saykali of the
European Council for Plasticisers &
Intermediates (ECPI), 19 deputies from the
right-leaning UMP voted in favour,
thinking that they were voting on amend-
ments rather than on the proposal itself.
She stressed that this is still only a bill.
Before becoming law, it must be put on
the agenda of the Senate, something
which is unlikely to take place before the
summer, although the Senate had earlier
initiated a ban on bisphenol A in babies
bottles.
The ECPI stated that it regrets the
adoption of this proposed law and is
concerned about a general, unsuitable
ban on these substances, especially
phthalates.
Meanwhile, the chemicals industry
body Union des Industries Chimiques (UIC)
said: The banning of entire families of
substances with different toxicological
profles, different applications and thus
different exposure levels is a scientifc,
technical and regulatory nonsense.
PlasticsEurope, the French plastics
association Fdration de la Plasturgie
and ELIPSO, the French plastic packaging
trade body, noted that the REACH
Authorisation process only applies to
DEHP, BBP and DBP. This proposal, by
contrast, envisages a blanket ban on many
substances that have never been linked
with harmful effects and also goes against
the principles of REACH.
In seeking to replace the existing
European regulations with regard to these
complex substances, the proposed law
creates more problems than it solves, the
three associations said.
It is scientifcally unjustifed, impos-
sible to apply and legally inappropriate.
The industry therefore asks for this
proposal to be abandoned.
The proposed Danish restriction covers
DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP and has to be
notifed to the EU so that the EC and other
EU member states can comment. The
ministry has already submitted a proposal
to ECHA to ban the import and sale of
products containing the four phthalates in
the EU.
MIM noted that if this comes into force
it will be the frst time that a ban is based
on the cumulative effect of more than one
phthalate and more than one source. The
population is exposed to phthalates from
different sources during a day, for example
from the indoor environment, from food
and from consumer products. Suitable
alternatives to phthalates are already
available and used in toys and childcare
articles, it said.
Environmental NGOs have responded
warmly. ChemSec used the occasion of the
French vote to update its SIN (Substitute It
Now) List of chemicals that it believes
should be subject to Authorisation under
REACH by including 22 alleged endocrine
disrupters that are commonly found in
toys, food packaging and cosmetics and
which are already classifed as Substances
of Very High Concern under REACH.
All four of the phthalates affected by
the French and Danish initiatives are on
SIN List 2.0, which was formally launched
in Brussels on 6 May, with support from
Boots, IKEA and the investment rating
agency MSCI. DEHP, BBP and DBP are
already to subject Authorisation, while
DIBP is on the Candidate List for possible
Authorisation.
l Details of the phthalates facing REACH
Authorisation can be found in our news
report in Compounding World, March 2011.

Environmental groups from
the USA and Africa stepped up
their campaigns against
polybrominated diphenyl ether
(PBDE) fame retardants at
last months 5th Conference of
Parties to the Stockholm
Convention. They focused on
regulations and voluntary
agreements that allow
materials containing the
chemicals to be exported or
recycled into new products.
The UNs African group
unsuccessfully pushed for
developed countries to block
exports of waste, such as old
electrical equipment and
foamed furniture, containing
PBDE fame retardants to
Africa.
The Stockholm Convention,
which has been signed by 170
governments, calls for global
elimination of the use of PBDEs.
A spokesperson for the US-
based lobby group International
POPs Elimination Network
(IPEN) expressed disappoint-
ment with the response to the
African demands. Delegates
agreed to continue allowing
these toxic fame retardant
wastes to be exported from
developed countries to the
developing world, even though
the expert committee said to
stop it, said Mariann Lloyd-
Smith, IPEN co-chair.
Meanwhile, IPEN has
published the results of a
series of tests on 26 samples of
foamed carpet padding
available in developed countries
around the world showing the
presence of either PentaBDE or
OctaBDE in 23 of them. It said
levels exceeded the EUs
indicative hazardous waste
limits in half of the samples.
IPEN claims that exposure
to PBDEs carries a number of
potential health risks,
including cancer and infertility.
It is pressing to end the
exemption that allows
manufacturers to recycle foam
and plastic containing the
chemicals back in to new
consumer products.
Several US states have
acted to ban PentaBDE and
OctaBDE, and fve states have
also banned the third and most
commonly used PBDE,
DecaBDE, said Kathleen
Curtis, spokesperson for IPEN
member organisation Clean
New York. However, the
majority of these laws exempt
the use of these toxic chemi-
cals in recycled content.

A new report from Applied Market Information examines the
changing fortunes of Europes leading technical compounders.
Carole Kluth summarises its key fndings

The full effect of the global recession on the independ-
ent technical compounding industry is documented in a
recent AMI report entitled Corporate performance and
ownership among technical compounders a review of
Europes 50 leading players. It shows that between 2008
and 2009 sector revenue dropped by more than 20%.
The combined production of the Top 50 companies
profled for 2009 was around 1.4 million tonnes, which
is virtually the same as the fgure recorded in AMIs
2006 report, showing that any growth achieved in
subsequent years was wiped out by the recession.
During this 2009 downturn compounders were more
interested in minimising credit risk than seeking to
preserve volumes or gain market share. In general
terms this meant that compounders responded to the
recession by seeking to maintain or grow margins
rather than chasing volume. That the industry did
not endure more pain in terms of bankruptcies
and corporate change is testament to its
success in achieving this. Even so, few
companies made much money during
2009. AMIs analysis reveals an
average proft before tax ratio of
just 2% for 2009 for the 50
groups profled in its report.
AMIs report covers only
independent technical
compounders, which are
defned as not being vertically
integrated into polymer
production. However, the
compounding activities of
companies which have
polymerisation facilities outside
Europe have been included (for
example Nilit) as have those of
companies compounding materials
for which they are not integrated (for
example the LFT activities of Ticona).
Toll compounding volumes carried out on
behalf of the polymer majors have also been
included in AMIs analysis, but the compounding
activities of the polymer companies themselves is not
included, which accounts for a signifcant share of the
market (approximately 60%).

The independent compounding sector was slightly
less affected by the downturn than the integrated sector
because it had lower exposure to the automotive sector,

producers sought to load in-house assets preferentially.
Some switching to in-house production also impacted
on volumes for the toll compounders.
Industry structure
According to Amis extensive database, there are 155
independent technical compounding sites in Europe.
independent compounders provide medium and small
plastics processors with small lots that are often
custom-made. They also supply a number of niche
applications. The advantages of using independent
compounders services include greater fexibility in
meeting specifc technical requirements, faster
response in colour-matching, and willingness to offer
product development and technical support services as
a package. Some of the independents have grown and
developed to pose strong competition to the powerful
integrated players. in some cases, their supplier
competitiveness has been enhanced by their additional
involvement as polymer distributors.
Another feature of the independent sector is the
provision of toll compounding facilities for the polymer
majors. Some companies choose to specialise in toll
compounding and do not offer any proprietary products,
while others will do a combination of both.
The overall trend in the technical compounding
business in recent years has been a drive to reduce
manufacturing costs and increase plant utilisation. A
key aspect of this has been debottlenecking of existing
assets to improve output. The attributes of a successful
independent producer are rapid response, fexibility and
anticipation of new trends. most companies have been
pursuing strategies to focus on core business areas and
dispose of unproftable areas of their operations.
However, during the downturn there was relatively
little m&A activity in this sector. At the same time there
also appear to have been relatively few casualties in
terms of bankruptcy. Through a combination of short-
time working and cost-cutting, most compounders
managed to ride out the storm. The main changes since
the downturn have been:
l The bankruptcy of the p group in italy, although the
capacity is now being leased by So.F.TEr.
l So.F.TEr also acquired the pp compounding
activities of matrixx in 2008.
l The creation of Almaak international in 2008 out of
the bankrupt J&A plastics.
l The sale of Future Advanced composites Technology
(FAcT) by ravago in december 2009 to Ticona, which
manufactures long-fbre compounds.
l ravago also closed its Ep compounding site in
Belgium during 2010 with production distributed to
other sites in the group.
l Schulman acquiring ico polymers in 2010 which
added rotomoulding and size reduction capabilities into
Schulmans European portfolio.
Ravago remains on top
As a result there has been relatively little change in the
standing of companies involved. The industry continues
to be dominated by the compounding activities of
Ravago, which is a leading toll compounder on behalf of
the polymer majors and is also building a position as a
supplier of proprietary compounds. The business
supplies more than twice as much prime compounds as
the next largest player (polymer chemie) and would be
even more signifcant if its volumes of secondary grade
and recycled polymer compounds were included.
ravago is a prime example of a business successfully
developing a broad range of services for both polymer
producers (as a toll compounder) and plastic processors
(as a merchant compounder) allied with its own
distribution sales network, making it a key player in the
supply chain for polymer in Europe. it looks to avoid
competing with its toll customers by selling its own
compounds only to markets in which they are not active.
As a result of this strategy in december 2009 ravago
divested its activities in long glass fbre reinforced pp

compounds which were encompassed within FAcT. The
company was sold to the celanese corporation which
combined it with its Ticona (celstran) business.
As of the end 2010, ravago manufactured prime
compounds at eight sites in Europe. The total com-
pounding capacity in Europe is in excess of 600,000
tonnes/year. in 2009, the total European output was
estimated at 350,000 tonnes, of which approximately
50% was from prime polymer feedstock rather than
industrial or recycled feedstocks.
The top 10 players
Similar strategies have been followed by many other of
the leading players in the supply of technical com-
pounds although the balance of toll versus distribution
versus proprietary products can vary and with it the
value of the business. The combination of polymers
compounded will also obviously impact on turnover,
although not necessarily on margins.
According to Amis analysis in this report, Albis and
Schulman are the second and third largest businesses
in value terms although on a volume basis they are
rated sixth and seventh. Both produce and distribute a
range of pp and technical engineering polymer
compounds for direct sale to customers in addition to
offering toll compounding services and being involved in
distribution. Both operate mainly out of germany.
Albis, with compounding sites in germany and the
uK, is the main distributor for many leading german
chemical companies, notably BASF, Bayer materialS-
cience, lanxess and lyondellBasell. its three sites have
a combined capacity of 135,000 tonnes.
Schulmans European compounding capacity is rated
at over 300,000 tonnes (including masterbatch). in 2010
it acquired ico polymers, which added rotomoulding
and size reduction capabilities to its European portfolio.
The acquisition will enable Schulman to increase its
presence in countries where it has a relatively small
market share, such as France, italy and the
netherlands, and further expand in the
higher growth regions of central and
Eastern Europe.
The strength of the german
industry means that Polymer
Chemie is rated the second
largest in volume terms,
although in turnover terms it is
much lower because the majority
of its business is based on toll
compounding. The company has
been reorganising itself to separate
out its toll compounding, technical
compounds and pVc compound businesses
which now operate separately. The strategy has been
part of a drive to focus on its core compounding
operations and during 2009 and 2010 it sold its
operations in plastics processing. Technical compounds
are made by its subsidiary Technocompound which
focuses on long-fbre technology (lFT) and has 60,000
tonnes/year of capacity. polyblend with 80,000 tonnes/
year of capacity focuses on the toll production of
polyolefn compounds.
output for many of the companies listed in Amis
report was down compared to the volumes reported in
the 2007 edition of this report, refecting the impact of
the downturn in 2008 and 2009. Those that have shown
growth largely achieved this through investment in new
capacity over this period, or by acquisition. The
company rated number three in volume terms is now
the Hungarian business, Inno-Comp, which established
a new plant in the czech republic in 2008. inno-comp
was spun out of the polyolefns producer TVK in 1999
and the compounding business is actually located on
the pp manufacturing site of TVK. The second plant in
czech republic is similarly closely integrated with
polymer production, being located on the site of the
unipetrol pp plant in litvnov.
Sirmax in italy has also grown thanks to its 2006
investment in a pp compounding plant in the special
economic zone in lodz, poland, which was strategically
placed to serve the appliance and automotive sectors
that were rapidly developing in the region. Sirmax is
rated ffth in volume and fourth in value terms.
Lamplast is another italian based pp compounder
which still managed to achieve some growth over the
period 2006 to 2010 thanks to investments to increase
capacity to 70,000 tonnes/year in 2007 and 2008.
The fourth largest company in Europe by volume is
estimated by Ami to have been Industrie Polieco MPB
which has a production capacity of 80,000 tonnes/year
for polyolefn compounds. mpB is one of the industrial

divisions belonging to the Polieco group,
which is a major European manufacturer of
PE pipes. MPB produces a range of PE and
PP compounds and grafted adhesives
primarily targeted at steel pipe coating
which accounts for more than 85% of
output. Additionally the company serves a
range of other markets with PE com-
pounds including cable jacketing, non-
pressure pipes and multi-layer packag-
ing. In addition to its site in Cazzago,
Italy, it has a 20,000 tonnes/year plant
which was recently relocated from
Dubai to Saudi Arabia.
The other top 10 companies by volume include
PolyOne and Sumika Polymer Corporation, each with a
different business focus. PolyOnes technical compound
production is mainly based on a range of engineering
polymers manufactured in Germany and Spain. It has a
total capacity of 120,000 tonnes/year for both engineering
and TPE compounds. Sumika, with plants in the UK and
France, is primarily a toll compounder of PP compounds
with a capacity of around 60,000 tonnes/year.
In value terms, however, the top 10 would include
Lati and Nilit, both of which mainly produce compounds
based on polyamide.
While the report focuses on 2009 data, AMI points
out that output, turnover and proftability for all these
companies substantially improved in 2010.

in Micaceous Iron Oxide (MIOX).
KMI, as a specialist in micronization of
high aspect ratio (HAR) minerals,
extended their product portfolio to
mica (muscovite, phlogopite) and
wollastonite.

These minerals have a higher aspect
ratio, either platy or acicular, and they
heavily influence the crucial properties
of thermoplastic polymers, such as
stiffness, impact and surface scratch
resistance.
As a consequence, the cycle time could
be decreased within the injection
molding process, and consequently the
process speed and the throughput
could be increased while mechanical
properties are maintained.

Lilli Sherman reviews a wide range
of recent developments in additives
for producing antistatic and
conductive plastics compounds
Demand is growing for antistatic and conductive
additives used in the production of electrically conduc-
tive plastic compounds. The expanding range of applica-
tions includes electronic packaging, touch panels,
automotive parts, industrial components, medical
devices and products used in explosive atmospheres
covered by ATEX regulations.
Carbon black based concentrates and compounds,
which offer an excellent price-performance ratio,
continue to account for a major portion of conductive
plastics applications. This is confrmed by key com-
pounders of specialty conductive compounds, including
RTP, Modern Dispersions, Premix, PolyOne and The
Mix. Specialty conductive blacks that have been
designed to offer an improved balance of properties for
such applications have been developed by a range of
suppliers including Cabot, AkzoNobel and Timcal.
However, carbon blacks are just one option for
producing permanent conductive compounds. Other
choices include conductive fbres and nanomaterials,
such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanofbres
(CNFs), or inherently dissipative polymers (IDPs). They
are targeted at a growing range of applications that
require longer term protection and/or lower surface
resistivity, including the protection of sensitive electronic
components from electrostatic dissipation (ESD).
Among the key suppliers of permanent antistats, such
as polymeric IDPs, are Arkema with Pebax, DuPont with
Entira, BASF with Irgastat P, Lubrizol with Electro-Rite
and Stat-Rite, and Sanyo Chemical with Pelestat. Non-
polymeric permanent options are also available, such as
Kenrich Petrochemicals Ken-Stat line of organometal-
lic, transparent and non-blooming additives.
Nano-scale additives are gaining ground fast with
improvements in cost/performance and processability.
Availability is improving with new production capacity
coming on stream. Target applications include electron-
ics packaging, automotive fuel systems, antistatic
transport drums, aerospace components and sporting
goods. Most notable are carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and in
particular the most widely used multiple-wall (MWCNTs)
variety. Key players include Arkema, Bayer MaterialS-
cience, CNano, Nanocyl, Showa Denko KK and Hyperion
for more on developments in CNTs see our special
report in the June 2010 issue of Compounding World,
and look out for an update in our forthcoming July/
August 2011 edition. Carbon nanofbres (CNFs) and
graphene nanofllers are also attracting attention thanks
to the efforts of suppliers such as Pyrograf Products and

Vorbeck respectively.
Basker lalgudi, north American market and sales
manager at Arkema, says that demand for conductive
polymer additives is growing by 6-7% in the west. in
Asia, he places the growth rate at more like 10-15% per
year. He notes that in the automotive arena, conductive
plastics are still dominated by carbon blacks versus the
other antistatic or conductive additives options.
Janos Kozma, vice president at specialty compound-
er and thermoplastics masterbatch producer Modern
Dispersions, sees demand for electrically conductive
plastics growing to meet safety standards which include
ATEX and SAEJ1645. He also touts the benefts of
electrically conductive masterbatch, saying that
compared to a fully-formulated electrically-conductive
compound they can provide more fexibility for proces-
sors in terms of cost, physical property adjustments
and choice of letdown resin.
christine Van Bellingen, product manager, carbon
black & graphite for polymers at Timcal Graphite &
Carbon, says there is an increasing demand for
conductive plastics, especially in the feld of electronic
packaging, followed by ATEX applications as well as fuel
systems with pc, polyolefns and nylons taking the lead.
Theres still a long way to go with conductive carbon
blacks in an ever-growing conductive market, with more
people caring about higher productivity and safety
standards, she states.
Sabic Innovative Plastics is seeing a signifcant
increase in demand for ultra-clean compounds in the
semiconductor/hard disk drive (Hdd) market. The
company has introduced what are said to be best-in-
class Stat-Kon and Stat-loy specialty compounds and
continues to further develop grades that reduce the low
particle count (lpc) by 50%.
neil Hardwick, marketing manager for conductive
compounds at RTP says: we are fnding renewed interest
in our high-aspect ratio stainless-steel fbre (SS) com-
pounds as an alternative to ni-coated graphite (ncg) com-
pounds for Emi shielding applications. while we still offer
both products, the recent global shortage of ncg has
made it challenging to obtain raw material in a reasonable
lead time. we are helping customers to realize that the
performance of SS compounds can meet the shielding
performance of ncg without supply limitations. These
two Emi shielding compounds are compared in Table 1.
Carbon capabilities
Timcals Van Bellingen says the company continues to
see interest in both its Ensaco 250g and extra-
conductive Ensaco 350g carbon black grades. The high
cleanliness and easy dispersibility of Ensaco 250g are
claimed to deliver excellent surface smoothness with
retention of good mechanical and fow properties.
Another variant, Ensaco 260g, has been developed to
withstand extreme shear levels sometimes generated
during the compounding or processing step.
Extra-conductive Ensaco 350g is said to provide a
given level of electrical conductivity at about half the
loading of Ensaco 250g. it is primarily used when
electrical conductivity needs to be combined with an
additional property that demands lower additive
loadings. Examples include easy-weldability, for
example in conductive HdpE pipes, or a lower global
density, as required in conductive pp foams.
Van Bellingen notes that extra-conductive blacks are
not only more expensive, but also inherently more
diffcult to disperse than lower surface area blacks like
Ensaco 250g/260g. Tests carried out in pc have shown
that, at equal volume resistivity, the izod impact
strength is still much higher with easy-dispersible
Ensaco 250g (17%) than with Ensaco 350g (8%). This

clearly highlights the importance of having a good in-
bulk dispersion, and the fact that working with the
lowest additive level is not necessarily giving the best
overall performance versus higher loadings of easy-
dispersible black. The in-bulk dispersion of an additive
will orient the fnal mechanical properties of a formula-
tion, whatever the loading of the additive.
The enhanced dispersion achieved with Ensaco 250G
can be attributed to its unusual combination of high
structure and low surface area. The low surface area also
ensures a very low water content and up-take (max 0.3%
water content, in a saturated atmosphere) which is
crucial for mixing with water-sensitive polymers and
avoids any drying step for the carbon black. The low
surface area also helps to reduce the viscosity increase
that is brought about by the high structure. At equal
volume resistivity, a compound flled with a lower surface
area carbon black will have a higher MFI than a com-
pound flled with a higher surface area black, even though
the percentages of carbon blacks might be different.
Georg H. Luh has introduced dust-free graphite.
This is a real innovation in this market and it provides
signifcant processing and handling advantages to
plastics compounders, says managing director Klaus
Rathberger. The company offers a wide range of natural
graphite products which it says have excellent perform-
ance in plastics. In addition to the electrical conductivity
effect of widely used carbon black additives, graphite
also shows a thermal conductivity of up to 470 W/m*K
which supports development of novel polymer materials
with unique properties, explains Rathberger. Applica-
tions range from conductive coatings to highly-flled
polymers for use in bipolar plates of fuel cells. Dust-
free graphite grades and graphite masterbatches
facilitate introduction into polymer materials.
Modern Dispersions recently introduced a range of
conductive masterbatches that incorporate high
loadings of high-structure conductive carbon black in a
range of carrier resins. MB-700 is formulated for use in
PE, PP and PS, while MB-745 and MB-720 are designed
for other styrenic and engineering resins. These
products can be blended with the bulk resin or sepa-
rately fed into the compounding, extrusion or moulding
process. Typical usage levels range from 25-50%
masterbatch while dispersion is claimed to be excellent.

company president John lettow says it has been
working on the development of compounded formula-
tions based on the most widely used engineering
plastics as well as polyolefns for electrical and
thermally conductive applications. we have applications
now under development in several major areas including
consumer packaging, industrial, automotive, aerospace
and medical, he explains, indicating that commercial
applications will be realised in the near future.
Pyrograf Products, an affliate of Applied Sciences,
continues to improve on its pyrograf-iii highly-graphitic,
carbon nanofbre (cnF), which boasts properties that
approach the theoretical values of graphite in nearly
every performance characteristic. This highly pure
product with over 99.9% fbrous material and very low
metal concentrations, has been commercially used to
improve the electrical, thermal and mechanical
properties of a wide variety of plastics, ranging from pp
to engineering resins and thermosets.
The company claims that the electrical conductivity
of polymers enhanced with cnF has been shown to be
12 orders of magnitude greater than that achieved with
SwnTs (single-wall nanotubes). Technical director
carla lake reveals that they have developed the
capability for in-house custom compounding, in addition
to selling cnFs to large compounders. we can do
batches from 1 to 50 lbs and we are doing a lot of work
with pEEK, pp and nylon particularly for medical
applications, she says.
The company has also developed a unique method
that enables the quantitative determination of how good
the dispersion of cnFs and or cnTs is within the
polymer. good dispersion has been a big issue.
dispersion is the combat zone for extracting the
benefts of nanomaterials in engineering resins, says
lake. with the newly-developed measurement method,
the company can quantitatively see how key properties
are affected based on the effcacy of the dispersion. it
anticipates that the new methodology will be adopted by
the reinforced compounding business.
one of the newest grades is pyrograf pr-25, a larger
tube with a large hollow core that has no disorder

core graphitic stacked cup or herringbone structure. its
beneft is that the outside can be very reactive, plus
material can be introduced into the core. it is being
investigated for self-healing dental fller applications.
Typical markets for these cnF composites include
industrial applications such as silicon wafer production,
batteries and fuel cells and disk-drive components. They
are also targeted at automotive applications, such as fuel

Unidym supplies CNTs and is also using them in
transparent, conductive flms for the electronics
industry. It has entered into a couple of interesting
ventures. Late last year, it formed a partnership with
NanoIntegris.
NanoIntegris already supplies high-purity single-
walled CNTs as well as solution phase graphene nano-
platelets. It plans to further improve the purity levels of
HiPco CNTs and create new electronically sorted HiPco
products.
Unidym has also entered into an alliance agreement
with Samsung Electronics that includes the licensing of
its CNT technology to the Korean company. The deal
covers fundamental patents on CNT composition of
matter, synthesis, processing, ink formulations and
transparent conductive flms. Samsung has granted
back to Unidym licenses to sell products under the
transferred patent rights and the two companies will
work together to develop and commercialize CNT-
based products.
Last year, Unidym showcased touch-sensitive MP-4

Antistatic and conductive additives | materials feature
made in China than anywhere else in the world, China
represents one of the largest markets for our transparent
conductive flms, says Mark Tilley, Unidyms president
and CEO. In its partnership with various customers,
Unidym has demonstrated that its flms can be substan-
tially more robust than traditional conductive flms based
on indium tin oxide (ITO). Also, because the flms can be
printed through a solution-based roll-to-roll manufactur-
ing process, they can be produced at a substantially lower
cost than vacuum deposited ITO flms.
Unidym also began a joint venture early last year
with South Koreas Wisepower to market and co-
develop its proprietary flm and electronic ink products
for the Korean touch panel and display industries.
Inherent advantages
Arkemas Pebax high-performance antistatic agents
are based on PEBA (polyether-ester block amide)
copolymer TPE. They have been in successful commer-
cial use for nearly two decades as permanent antistat-
ic agent for a variety of thermoplastics, says Lalgudi.
This non-plasticized resin is used as a moulding and
extrusion material in its own right. It has been shown to
exhibit intrinsic static-dissipative characteristics when
blended at 5% to 30% levels with ABS, ABS/PC,
PS,HIPS,PBT, acetal, PVC, PET, PETG or polyolefns.
The company has recently introduced two new Pebax
grades: MV2080, which is similar to the earlier MV1074,
while new MH2030 is similar to MH1657. Both are based
on a proprietary technology that is said to improve
compatibility with the host polymer: MV2080 is designed
for polyolefns, PS, ABS, PC, PVC, PET and PBT;
MH2030 is aimed at engineering resins such as nylon,
polyacetal and PPS.
In the past with Pebax, we have focused on conduc-
tive/antistatic range plastics applications (10
9
ohms per
sq) for primarily polyolefns, ABS and PC. Three key
applications have included: intermediate bulk containers
that hold plastic resins and are designed to reduce the
static build-up of the pellets; the plastic moving parts of
printers; and artifcial grass, explains Lalgudi.
With the new Pebax grades 2080 and 2030, the
company is going after the mid-range static dissipative
market (from 10
6
ohms per sq), which requires higher
conductivity levels, and one of the key areas it is
targeting is packaging of electronic devices such as
iPods and iPads.
The highest conductive category consists of plastics
that have surface resistivity of 10
5
Ohm/ sq ft or less.
These conductivities are achieved with steel fbres,
carbon blacks and carbon nanotubes (CNTs); the latter
is claimed to reduce surface resistivity to as low as 10
2
to
10
-1
ohms per sq. These are the conductivities required
for plastics used in aerospace and military applications
as well as housings of medical devices where superior
conductivity coupled with excellent mechanical proper-
ties are often required, explains Lalgudi.
He does note that the new Pebax grades are
competitive with Lubrizols products. These grades are
20-25% higher in price than the standard Pebax grades.
He says the companys Pebax grades are offered in

Compound growth
Premix of Finland is a leading producer of conductive
compounds. it recently picked up a plastics innovation
award for its work on the SparkSafe grounding pliers
which are made with its pre-Elec pp 1399 conductive
polypropylene grade for injection moulding applications.
The compound was used to replace aluminium and was
selected because it dissipates static electricity in a
controlled manner, reducing the risk of sparks, plus it
will not give off mechanical sparks if dropped on a hard
surface. other advantages over the metal pliers are
their ergonomic design, lighter weight, more comfort-
able handling in cold weather and corrosion resistance.
Sabic has introduced a new version of its lnp
Faradex electromagnetic interference (Emi) shielding
compound that also offers colourability. The company
says that some conductive compounds have colouring
limitations as they are carbon-flled, but Faradex
specialty grades can overcome this issue.
The company is also reporting new applications for
its ultra-pure Stat-loy compounds that were launched
in 2008 and initially geared to the semiconductor
industry, for example wafer protection devices.
Emerging markets for the material include the medical
device arena. Stat-loy compounds are available in three
transparent resin systems: ABS, pmmA and Xylex pc/
pBT alloy. They are also available in opaque resins such
as pA 6, pBT, pom and pp, enabling manufacturers to
combine opaque and clear components for design or
functional purposes.
Three transparent grades were commercially
launched last year and are said to represent a new
breakthrough for inhalation devices. They provide
permanent antistatic properties without the need for
expensive secondary operations. These properties help
ensure repeatability of dosing and potentially lower
drug costs through more effcient aerosol and powder
dispensing. They are pre-assessed for biocompatibility
according to iSo 10993.
The latest conductive compound from Sabic was
launched last month and has been specifcally designed
to create and maintain high-quality, attractive automo-
tive interior components. The geloy HrA170d pc/ASA
resin provides permanent antistatic performance for a
fresh, clean appearance of interior parts. compared to
conventional materials that tend to attract dust, the new
compound repels dust. instead of using a slip agent, the
Sabic product uses an additive to ensure anti-dust
performance with a surface resistivity of 10
12
ohm.
Since colour pigment loading can have a big infuence
on antistatic properties, Sabic is offering this compound
in a wide range of colours. Target applications include
trims, interior mirror housings and overhead consoles.

Twin-screw extruders | machinery feature
Jennifer Markarian reviews recent developments in twin-screw
extruders, including high-torque, high-volume designs,
plus specialised lines for handling bioplastics, high
fller loadings and high moisture contents
Twin-screw extruders (TSEs), with their versatile design
and mixing capabilities, can meet the needs of a broad
range of compounding applications that require
effciency and high quality. in colour and additive
masterbatches and in custom compounds, equipment
suppliers continue to see demand for smaller machines
with quick-changeover features that help compounders
to be fexible and make shorter runs more effciently.
Medium- to large-size extruders are still in demand for
other market segments, such as glass- or mineral-
flled compounds and reactive extrusion, notes Alberto
lorioli, export manager at Comac. Extruders with high-
volume, high-torque, and both high-volume and high-
torque are now available from more suppliers to meet
various market needs.
industry experts continue to see increased develop-
ment and commercial compounding of recycled, bio-
based, and biodegradable polymers as well as the use
of increasingly high fller levels. These bring not only
feeding and dispersion challenges, but an increasing
need for removing volatiles from the mixing section of
the extruder.
The latest trends
in twin-screw technology
High-torque and high-volume
High-torque machines are designed to increase
throughput. one new development introduced at K2010
is Coperions ZSK Mc
18
, which can obtain specifc torque
up to a record 18 nm/cm
3
. The new series retains the
outer to inner diameter ratio (od/id) of 1.55 used in the
ZSK Megacompounder plus, and is available in screw
diameters ranging from 32 to 119 mm. it has a rede-
signed gearbox and uses new, high-performance
materials for the screw shafts that ensure full trans-
mission of the torque from the drive unit to the screw
elements, explains Frank lechner, head of process
technology at coperion. He reports that the ZSK Mc
18
features a 30% increase in specifc torque, increases
throughput by up to 30%, and at the same time due to
the higher degree of fll improves the quality of the
compound.
lechner explains that processing fexibility is
important, especially for the masterbatch market. we
can process shear-sensitive products like foaming
agent masterbatches using a high degree of fll. or,
less-shear-sensitive products can be processed with

maximum screw speeds and high throughput rates.
And, if needed, we can achieve high shearing using a
low degree of fll.
coperions ZSK mc
18
features a new easy cleaning
design and improved energy effciency. lechner adds:
we optimized the cooling system and improved the
insulated barrel cover all around the process section.
we also improved heat transfer of the wear protection
liners. conventional liners, when pushed only into the
main screw barrel body, suffer from a small insulation
gap. coperion now provides a shrink-ft liner system
without this insulation gap.
Leistritz of germany pioneered the combination of
high-torque and high-volume with the introduction of the
ZSE maxx extruder in 2006. The ZSE maxx has an od/id
of 1.66 and torque of up to 15 nm/cm
3
, the combination
of which is enabled by the companys patented, asym-
metrical splined shaft. Since then, the company has been
identifying where this new technology is most benefcial.
For example, the maxx offers benefts for foam concen-
trates and heat- and shear-sensitive polymers like
bioplastics and pET, as well as for high fller levels that
are both torque- and volume-limited, notes charlie
martin, president of the American operations of leistritz.
leistritzs ZSE maxx extruder has been updated with
a platform design that streamlines the assembly of
machines to meet specifc customer
requirements. All electrical control
components are now contained in a
single cabinet, and the control panel
can be positioned on any side of the
machine, improving ease of use
and maintenance for the operator.
leistritz also introduced a new
sleeve coupling that facilitates
quick screw exchange without
additional tools.
other suppliers are now offering high-volume, twin-
screw extruders paired with high torque. Steer
Engineering of india introduced its omega H extruder
line just over two years ago as an evolution from its
standard, high-volume omega extruder series. Both
lines have an od/id of 1.71, but the omega H achieves
torque of 15-17 nm/cm
3
. mike millsaps, director of
sales at Steer America, notes that with this high-torque,
multiple feeders can be used to keep up with output.
For example, Steer recently achieved 1,900 lb/hr (900
kg/h) throughput on an omega 40H using three side-
feeders. The omega H also features a downstream
vacuum vent-stuffer. The vacuum vent stuffer is ideal
for anyone experiencing venting problems. it does a
good job of preventing material from coming out of
vents when running at high rates, explains millsap.
Comac introduced its XT (eXtra-Torque) co-rotating
extruder, which can obtain torque of 15 nm/cm
3
, early
in 2011. comac now offers co-rotating extruders in both
standard (od/id ~ 1.5) and high-volume (od/id ~ 1.65)
and in both High-Torque and eXtra-Torque versions.
lorioli explains: XT machines are in demand for
formulations that require low screw-speed operation in
order to protect thermo-sensitive materials. in these
cases, a given extruder size can often reach the desired,
economical output rate only at very high torque levels
exceeding HT capabilities. Sectors such as fame-
retardant additives and many colour masterbatches can
beneft from low-speed, high-volume production. He
adds: This does not mean that standard torque and
volume extruders are not requested anymore. we
recommend these machines in all applications where
dispersion is critical, such as colour masterbatches
with diffcult organic pigments or compounds with
nano-fllers, for example.
comac also announced a new barrel module concept
at K2010, which it is gradually extending to all its models.
The new barrel modules and sleeves can be disassem-
bled and reassembled without special tools and with
reduced handling of heavy parts. The barrel confguration
is also more convenient to change. The modules are
intrinsically easy to align during reassembly, and have

in other news, extruder manufacturer Feddem made
its debut at K2010, and introduced its new, standard
torque and volume FEd-mT twin-screw extruder. The
extruder has an od/id of 1.55, specifc torque of 11 nm/
cm
3
and is available in screw diameters from 37-94 mm.
The company was formed when the Feddersen group
acquired decroupet in September 2009. Based in Sinzig,
decroupet has manufactured extruders for 25 years and
all of its employees have transferred to Feddem. The
Feddersen group also includes Akro-plastic which
produces technical compounds in germany and china
and uses extruders produced by decroupet.
KraussMaffei Berstorff has also been busy developing
its new ZE 30 uTX twin-screw extruder that will makes its
world debut at the chinaplas exhibition in guangzhou
later this month. For full details on this new machine, see
our chinaplas preview which follows this article.
Bringing bio-benefts
compounding of biodegradable materials is becoming
more prevalent, particularly in Europe, which has an
extensive composting infrastructure. The technology to
compound these materials is well established. Thermo-
plastic starch (TpS) has been produced using TSEs
since the materials development almost 20 years ago,
notes Adam dreiblatt, director of process technology for
Century Extrusion. He says that technology like vent
stuffers to vent moisture, screw element designs to feed
low bulk density starch raw materials, and pelletizing
systems like die-face or air-cooled strand pelletizing
were initially borrowed from the twin-screw extrusion of
snacks and cereals.
Todays high-torque extruders, like centurys cX
model, are helpful for extruding thermally-sensitive
biopolymers like TpS and plA, adds dreiblatt. com-
pared to standard-torque extruders, high-torque
extruders can maintain equivalent output at lower
screw speeds, minimizing melt temperature.
The frst compounding plant for biodegradable
plastics in portugal recently started up using Coperi-
ons ZSK extruders (we covered the installation at
cabopol in our October 2010 issue). Being able to
defne the length and the screw confguration of the
process section is key because of the variety of possible
base polymers and the great differences in the formula-
tion mixtures for biodegradable products, states
coperions lechner.
Experts comment that while biodegradable resins
are being targeted for non-durable products like bags,
food packaging, and agricultural flms, non-biodegrad-
able but bio-based resins are being targeted more for
durable goods. Equipment supplier Henschel is involved
in research in this area. last year it began a three-year
project with the german ministry of Agriculture to
investigate compounding bio-sourced pA with
natural fllers. The target is to produce a 100%
bio-based injection moulding compound with
comparable mechanical properties to a
compound based on pA6 containing 30% glass
fbres. Henschel produced the test compounds,
which were formulated by the Fraunhofer institute of

also plans to run lab trials of the material on its
commercial-scale 55 mm compounder.
compounding of bio-based polymers like plA
continues to be a development area. Twin-screw extrud-
ers are being used in compounding pellets as well as in
direct extrusion for applications like themoformable
packaging sheets, notes comacs lorioli.
KraussMaffei Berstorff offers a ZE 60 uTX TSE with
a processing section that has been optimized for
processing natural fbre reinforcements and bioplastics.
The 6d length barrel sections provide large top
openings for feeding low bulk-density materials and for
effcient degassing of high moisture contents. The
machines also feature a side vent stuffer and an
injection disc ftted between barrel sections to allow the
addition of liquids in the production of biopolymers.
increasing amounts of recycled plastics are being
used in many application areas, bringing the challenge
of making consistent products out of inconsistent
feedstreams. compounders of recycled polymers are
beginning to call more on twin-screw extruders, says
lorioli, who notes, co-rotating TSEs are being used
because of their superior degassing abilities and good
blending capability, which is helpful with a mixed
feedstream that can have a wide range of resins. He
notes that one growing market, for example, is
compounding pE/pp printed flm scrap into pellets,
which requires good degassing to remove the high
volatiles from inks.
PET projects
Another growing market area is the dryerless extrusion
of recycled pET, including both pre- and post-consumer
material. Leistritz has been running development
programs for this application, and uses multi-stage
vacuum venting on the ZSE maxx to minimize hydrolysis
during extrusion.
Comacs co-rotating extruders have been used for
dryerless pET extrusion since 2003, primarily with
extruders integrated into sheet extrusion or fbre lines.
more recently, the company has seen an interest in
compounding pET scrap into regenerated, higher
intrinsic viscosity (iV) pellets that can be used in higher-
value applications like food and beverage containers.
comac is currently developing patent-pending equip-
ment for eliminating iV drop in the extruder without
material pre-drying and without using chain-extending
additives. Today, comacs system can obtain no iV drop
with in-line drying (to moisture levels less than 50 ppm),
about a 5% iV drop with moderate pre-drying (moisture
levels less than 500 ppm), or an iV drop of less than 10%
with no pre-drying (moisture levels less than 5,000
ppm), says lorioli.
processors continue to put higher and higher fller
levels into compounds, presenting equipment manufac-
turers with the task of dispersing even more challeng-
ing mixtures. glass-fbre-flled polyamides, for
example, have increased from 50% maximum fbres to
60% today. in the past a highly-flled polyolefn might
have 70% fller, but today these compounds can have up
to 85%, comments markus Brunkau, general manager
of the compounding division for Henschel Mixing
Technology at Zeppelin Reimelt. For such high fller
levels, he recommends a process length of 48 l/d and
screw speeds that are moderate enough to ensure
proper mixing and homogenising.
John Effmann, director of sales and marketing at
Entek, adds, in addition to higher fller levels, we have
customers asking us to look at all different kinds of
fllers. we look at different screw confgurations in
order to fnd the best way to disperse these materials.
Removing moisture
increasing numbers of compounding
applications are generating high levels of
volatile or moisture content, for example
from high fller loadings, natural fbres,
bio-based plastic formulations or un-dried
pET. This can be a challenge to remove from

When Steve Maguire popularized the gravimetric batch blender
in the 80s, he started out small, working from his attic. From
those early blenders, the line has grown both larger and smaller;
big and little, if you will. Now, the new Maxi Batch

is the largest
volume blender at 14,000 lbs/hr and the littlest one- the Micro
Blender

- is still wellmicro. The concept however remains the

same, actually improving through field trials. The real-world test
is having nearly 40,000 units installed worldwide.
Steve Maguire remembers his days as a processor and the
ever-present pressure to produce. Technology, after all, is supposed
to work for you, not against you. Thats why Maguire sees blender
logic as the gateway to process control in the future. Accuracy,
precise dosing, economy of materials never go out of fashion.
And little things count, especially as resin costs rise.
With nearly 150 patents in the U.S. and internationally, Maguire
is committed to developing unique products and systems in blending
and beyond.
So the big story is really about combining productivity with
savings. Why not make a little move today and contact us?
Who knows? It could make a big difference.

the extruder and can affect the output capacity
of the line. Since atmospheric venting is
insuffcient in these applications, equipment
suppliers have, for several years, offered
degassing units on the side of the extruder to
more effciently remove all types of volatiles,
including moisture. While these side twin-screw
extruders are sometimes called feeders or stuffers
and do look like this equipment, they act to keep the
material in the extruder and allow air and volatiles out.
With the increasing demand for this function,
suppliers have been making improvements to their
equipment. KraussMaffei Berstorff, for example,
recently redesigned its SFE side vent port stuffer to use
either modular or solid screws.
Coperions ZS-EG twin-screw side
degassing units are seeing
increasing use in the produc-
tion of highly flled master-
batches with high moisture
contents, notes the company. Coperion recently
updated the units design by optimizing the screw set
and adding a variable speed screw drive. Standard
models of the ZS-EG are now designed for an absolute
vacuum of up to 50 mbar, with lower degassing
pressure available upon request.
Henschel introduced a degassing side-feeder about
fve years ago. The counter-rotating twin screws in the
side-feeder increase the volume so that air and
volatiles can be removed more
effciently, says Brunkau. Atmospheric-
venting side-feeders are connected via
pipes to a suction blower to collect
moisture and air in a wet fltering system. The vents can
also be put under vacuum using two vacuum units that
can be adjusted separately depending on the process
requirements. The company recently redesigned its
barrel to allow both a degassing and a production side-
feeder, whereas previously the barrel design could
accommodate one or the other.

chinaplas 2011 exhibition | event preview
The biggest plastics exhibition of 2011
takes place in china this month.
we pick out some of the new
machinery and additives that will be
of particular interest to compounders
The 25
th
chinaplas exhibition is taking place on 17-20
May in guangzhou, china. it will be the worlds biggest
plastics industry event of 2011, featuring more than
2,200 exhibitors. The shows organiser, Adsale predicts
that it will attract over 80,000 visitors.
Since the frst chinaplas was held back in 1983, the
exhibition has grow in size from around 1,000 m
2
to
more than 180,000 m
2
. This years event is being held at
Asias largest exhibition centre the china import and
Export Fair pazhou complex.
There will be a strong emphasis on sustainable
technologies with a special conference taking place on
the second and third days of the show, plus there will be
a new exhibition zone dedicated to bioplastics and
degradable plastics.
For more details on visiting chinaplas 2010, go to
www.chinaplasonline.com.
Many of the new machines and materials launched
at last years K show in germany will be making their
Asian debuts at chinaplas. we covered many of these in
the September, October, November and December
editions of compounding world. in this preview we will
largely focus on new products that werent shown in
dsseldorf, as well as products from local chinese and
Asian suppliers.
Twin-screw extruders
KraussMaffei Berstorff will be using chinaplas 2011 for
the world premiere of its ZE 30 uTX twin-screw
extruder, which flls the gap between the ZE 25 uTX
laboratory machine and the ZE 40 uTX production-scale
line. The company says that the new model provides a
cost-effective and versatile solution for laboratory
applications, recipe development and production
processes with output rates from 30 to 250 kg/h.
The ZE 30 uTX is available in a short version for
various homogenizing applications, as well as in very
long variants for special tasks requiring side feeders,
degassing vents and injection nozzles. it is also offered
with the option of an ultraglide travelling unit for
rapidly moving the melt-flled extruder screws back-
wards out of the stationary processing section. This
allows quick and accurate evaluation of the compound-
ing process, zone-by-zone. in addition, it delivers
considerable time savings for cleaning and screw
modifcation.
Two different od/id ratios are offered. The A series

has 1.46 OD/ID for high energy input, high shear and
high torque, while the R series has an OD/ID ratio of 1.74
for high-volume compounding applications involving
materials with low bulk densities or applications
requiring low energy input or long residence times.

Useon Extrusion of China will be exhibiting two of its
new SAT series twin-screw extruders in Guangzhou this
month. These are designed to offer high specifc torque
using a tried and tested gearbox design. The company
says that the new machines are constructed with a
greater level of precision than its previous TDS series.
They offer higher throughputs, broader processing
capabilities, improved residence time distributions, and
more accurate temperature control.

Additives and compounds
Chemtura will be promoting the latest additions to its
range of antioxidants, UV stabilizers, polymerisation
inhibitors and fame retardants. It is expanding its range
of Weston 705 liquid products under its Liquid Produc-
tivity Platform brand, and is also adding complementary
liquid phenolics and blends. The companys fame
retardant business, which has been rebranded Great
Lakes Solutions, will be promoting its recently launched
Emerald range of sustainable FR additives, which is
being expanded to four different products.
Chemtura will also be highlighting its new applica-
tion development centre in Nanjing and discussing its
plans to invest more than $50 million in China over the
next several years. The company has appointed a new
director of mergers and acquisitions in Shanghai to look
for opportunities in the country and the wider Asia
Pacifc region.

Elasto will be raising the profle of its new name and
identity at Chinaplas this year. The company was formed
a year ago when Hexpol acquired the TPE division of the
Vita Group. It has compounding plants in Sweden and
the UK producing its Dryfex and Mediprene grades
based on SBS, SEBS, TPO and TPV technologies. Elasto
recently appointed Telko Shanghai as a distributor for
its products in the Chinese market.

Meilian Chemical will be highlighting its masterbatch
production capabilities. Its plant in Shantou, Guang-
dong, has eight compounding lines with a total capacity
of 20,000 tonnes/year. The company focuses on PE mas-
terbatch including black, white, colour and additive
products. The latter include anti-static, anti-block, slip
and clarifer/nucleator grades.

use as fllers in plastics and rubber. Its processing plant
produces a wide range of coated and uncoated grades
with particle sizes from 6 to 70 microns.

PolyOne will be showing its new Stat-Tech NT conduc-
tive compounds that are based on carbon nanotubes
(CNTs). The grades, which were launched at the
Brasilplast exhibition earlier this month, include
formulations based on POM, PEEK, PEI and PC. They
are designed to offer high electro-static discharge (ESD)
protection and improved productivity, processing as
easily as the base resin. The company says that the
compounds maintain all of the mechanical properties
that are required for media storage, integrated circuit
packaging, semi-conductor devices and other electronic
applications. Because CNTs only need to be used at low
loadings to achieve the required conductivity, they have
minimal effect on properties like strength, shrinkage,
warpage and compound viscosity.

Shandong Chuanjun Chemical will promote its broad
range of polymer additives with a focus on its environ-
mentally-friendly products. It manufactures zinc borate
fame retardants and has increased its capacity for these
materials to 10,000 tonnes/year at its plant in Zibo City,
Shandong Province. The company also supplies a range
of plasticizers and will be using Chinaplas to promote its
DEDB and DPGDB grades. Its capacity for these has
been grown to 20,000 tonnes/year.

Shandong Hongkun manufactures benzotriazole UV
absorbers at its plant in Dezhou and carries out its R&D
work at Sichuan University. Marketed under the
Gransorb brandname, its additives are used in conjunc-
tion with HALS in polyolefns as well as in PVC, PC, PU,
Automotive plastics
move up a gear
Chinas huge automotive industry is implementing more sophisticated
applications of plastics in its latest models.
For example, Changan Automobile is using Sabics Stamax long-
glass-fbre PP compounds to produce an all-plastic front-end module
(FEM) on its CX30 model. According to Sabic, this is the frst all-plastic
FEM to be introduced on a Chinese-developed vehicle.
By using Stamax to replace steel, the weight of automotive compo-
nents can be reduced by up to 40%. In this application, a total saving of
around 4 kg was achieved. Sabic says that Changan has also reduced
overall system costs by implementing modular assembly of the FEM,
improving effciency on its production line. The single plastic moulding
replaces 22 metal components.
Another Chinese auto maker that is looking to increase its use of
advanced polymers is Chery Automobile. It is setting up a joint research
and development laboratory in conjunction with Bayer MaterialScience
at its Wuhu site in Anhui Province. The partnership will aim to develop
innovative applications of plastics to improve the energy effciency of
future car designs.

The session is organised so that each polymer material type is reviewed in terms of supply/demand, end use application with the provision of both a historical perspective, a current performance (fully updated for the 2010 market) and a future forecast.
In the later sessions during the day, attention turns to the current shape and future development of the processing industry, including views on all the major technoogy sectors. The presentations give you the opportunity to hear AMIs perspective on the changes in both polymer markets and the evolution of the downstream processing sectors, which will shape the future of the industry.

Rowa expands fame-retardant range
Rowa Group companies have
been busy formulating a range
of new fame-retardant
compounds for a variety of
applications.
For example, Mller
Kunststoffe has developed new
fame-resistant TPEs for the
construction industry. The
halogen-free Lifofex UV Flam
compounds have signifcantly
better stress crack and
chemical resistance than
fame-retardant PC/ABS
blends. For this reason the
new PC/PBT grades are
suitable for housings and
parts that are subject to
frequent cleaning.
www.rowa-group.com/en
Romira has introduced new
halogen-free fame-retardant
PC/PBT blends that meet V0
fame tests under UL94 down
to 1.5 mm. Romiloy EXP1950 is
a non-reinforced grade, while
EXP2047 and EXP2088 are
both glass-fbre-reinforced.
The company says that semi-
crystalline PC/PBT moulding
grades meet the DIN 4102-1
standard, corresponding to
construction materials class
B2 with a minimum thickness
of 1.6 mm. They can be
extruded or injection moulded
and they have good adhesion
to PP for the production of
two-component products.

teknor apex unveils a softer touch
US-based Teknor Apex claims the
latest addition to its Medalist range of
super-soft medical TPEs is so soft it
cannot be accurately measured on the
Shore A hardness scale.
Softer than the companys current
softest product, which has a Shore A
hardness rating of 5, the MD-447
medical elastomer gel is rated at 25 on
the Shore OO ultra-soft scale. Despite
its gel-like characteristics, the trans-
parent MD-447 TPE is supplied in free-
fowing pellet form.
Teknor Apex has considerable
experience with gel elastomers used
commercially in non-medical applica-
tions, says the companys medical
market manager Lisa Charno. We
applied that experience to formulate a
gel that achieves new levels of softness
yet fows freely in pellet form and is
readily processed in standard injection
moulding machines.
The new grade is based on a standard
hydrogenated styrenic block copolymer. It
displays a specifc gravity of 0.868 and
melt fow rate of 20 (g/10min).
According to the company, the TPE is
free of latex, phthalates and animal-
derived components. It is also said to
comply with FDA, California Proposition
65, CONEG, and REACH requirements for
medical applications.
Teknor Apex says MD-447 will provide
improved comfort in any skin-contact
application such as moulded-in seals and
cushions.

Engage XLT is a new
polyolefn elastomer grade
from Dow Chemical Company
that is claimed to provide
enhanced weight saving and
impact performance in PP-
based TPOs for automotive
interior and exterior
applications.
According to Dow, Engage
XLT is a highly effective impact
modifer so lower loadings can
be used. This results in a
stiffer TPO compound and
opens up opportunities for
thin-walling parts.
Computer-based engineer-
ing simulations carried out for
Dow show that part weights
can be reduced by up to 10%
by using the new XLT grade,
with an associated saving in
production cycle times.
The ability of Engage XLT
to facilitate the production of
light, large parts with a faster
mould time can help
compounders and manufac-
turers to cost-effectively
produce fuel-effcient
vehicles without compromis-
ing quality, says Dave
