good news is i have managed to "avoid" the above problem when i accidentally discovered this: during the installation of ubuntu, it would do Automatic Configuration of DHCP Network. what i did previously was my NIC was not connected to my router cum modem. and so after ubuntu is installed, i could not (or did not know how to) configure my internet connection, although proxy settings were set correctly. then, as part of fun learning, i reinstalled ubuntu in the same computer, but this time i had the router cum modem switched on, and the wired connection done up between the router and my NIC. then i booted to ubuntu's installation CD. when it came to the Automatic

i am sure there are ways to configure a network from X-Windows without going through re-installation of ubuntu, but i do not know the root commands to use. anyway, now that internet connection is out of the way, i am still tweaking with installing Chinese into ubuntu. future project would be to try to surf using my USB network adapter.

analog or digital dial up? Or in simple terms, 56k or adsl? I assume adsl. I dial up using modem/router firmware upon power up ... so I dun need dial up ... sidharth1008 perhaps you can provide more info on your isp connection, such as name of provider, modem/router, and also way of connecting to your modem, usb/lan/wireless adapter?

----------------------------------------------------------------Change Ubuntu Server from DHCP to a Static IP Address (OR SETUP NETWORK CONNECTION): sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces For the primary interface, which is usually eth0, you will see these lines: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp If you see the above two lines then it's using DHCP. To change dhcp to static. auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.2.0 broadcast 192.168.2.255 gateway 192.168.2.1 Now we'll need to add in the DNS settings by editing the resolv.conf file: sudo vi /etc/resolv.conf name server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx replace the x with the IP of your name server. (You can do ifconfig /all to find out what they are) You need to also remove the dhcp client for this to stick (thanks to Peter for noticing). You might need to remove dhcp-client3 instead. sudo apt-get remove dhcp-client Now we'll just need to restart the networking components: sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart ----------------------------------------------------------------regards, Ian Gregory, Sydney.
