How to Register for Programs

1. You may register in person in the Community Services Office or online through our website:
www.scarborough.me.us/commserv/documents/onlinereg/index For first-time users, please call Community Services at 730-4150 to acquire your user name and password for online registration and payments. For step-by-step online registration instructions, please visit the webpage above.
Registration Dates -- Year-Round
2. Community Services accepts cash, checks, money orders, and debit cards for in-office registrations. Please make checks payable to Town of Scarborough. We accept credit and debit cards for online registrations. 3. All program fees must be paid in full upon registration. 4. We do not accept registrations through the mail or by phone. Registration into activities will be allowed only if the account is in good standing. Community Services reserves the right to deny registration into an activity pending payment of an outstanding balance.

Non-Resident Fee
Non-residents may register for our programs. An additional $15 fee will be assessed for most programs. However, some programs may require additional fees. Please see each program for more information.

Check Writing Policy

Please make checks payable to Town of Scarborough. Must show valid photo ID. Personal checks must show name, current address, and telephone number. Starter checks cannot be accepted.
Youth Recreation Programs Families with three or more children registering for the same Community Services-run recreation program may receive a 10% discount off the third child and any additional children from the same family. This discount will be taken off the lowest program fee. All participants must be registered at the same time to receive this discount. If one sibling cancels from a program, any refund will be given for the discounted amount paid only. Additional fees may apply; please refer to our refund policy on this page.
NOTE: Sibling discounts will not be applied for online registrations. To receive this discount, you must register in the Community Services Office.
Refund Policies All ProgrAms (excluding 55+ -- see below)

No refunds: If an individual does not attend the activity or does not cancel at least 7 calendar days prior to the start of an activity. $15 processing fee: For any cancellation or change made by applicant. 100% refund: If Community Services cancels the activity.
Child Care Families with two or more children registered for full-time (5 days per week) before-school or after-school care will receive 10% off the second and/or subsequent child care fees. Discount will be taken off of the lowest child care fee.
Early Registration Discount

Community Services works hard to offer the best prices available for our programs. Because our work becomes labor-intensive the week prior to a program start date, we like to encourage residents to register early by offering early discount prices on certain programs. We hope people will appreciate this and take advantage of these prices. However, this discount incentive is a special offer which cannot be extended if those dates have passed. No exceptions.
HeAltH reAsons
If a participant cannot participate due to medical reasons, a refund will be given if a signed doctor's note is presented to the Community Services staff within the first 48 hours of said injury. If injury occurs and is reported with a doctor's note before the activity begins, no processing fee will be assessed. If applicant attended some classes, the refund will be prorated for the number of days the injured participant attended the program. In this case, a $15 processing fee will be assessed and deducted from the refund.
Late Registrations
Some programs may be adversely affected each year due to participants waiting until the last minute to register. There is a point when a program must be cancelled or modified if there are insufficient registrations. All programs require a high level of coordination which includes facility scheduling, staffing, volunteer recruitment, team formation, and the purchasing of supplies. You will notice that the majority of our programs have registration deadlines. If there is room in a given activity after a deadline has passed, late registrations will be accepted with an additional $10 late fee assessed; however, children may not be guaranteed a T-shirt, ball, etc.
multiPle-session ProgrAms
If your child is indecisive about a multiple-session program, we recommend registering for individual sessions versus the entire program. When registering for multiple sessions at once, please keep in mind that combined session dates are all inclusive; therefore, should you choose to cancel once the first session begins, no refund will be given for the remaining sessions.
Youth Team Request Policy

Community Services understands that one of the best aspects of participating in our programs is the ability to play with friends or have the same coach year after year. However, in an attempt to keep teams balanced, we have instituted the following policy. In programs such as basketball, fall soccer, and indoor soccer, coach and player requests will be limited to two requests per participant. You may request one coach and one player, or you may request two players. Timely registrations allow Community Services the opportunity to balance teams in a fair manner; timely requests also help in this process. However, there are many variables that go into the planning process and, even though we do our best, we cannot guarantee that your choice will be honored.
55+ ProgrAms
No refunds: Wednesday Lunches: If an individual does not attend a lunch or does not cancel by Monday at 2:00 pm, the household will be charged and the balance must be paid in full in order to enroll in future programs. Transportation: Beginning January 2012, if a participant does not use the service or does not cancel 24 hours prior to the scheduled service, the household will be charged and the balance must be paid in full in order to enroll in future programs. Trips: If participant cancels a trip, no refund will be issued. 100% refund: If Community Services cancels the activity/trip.

Changes Due to the New Wentworth School Construction

Summer 2012
Child Care Administrative Office Location There will be no child care office hours during the summer. The Community Services Office will be available for registration, payments, and to answer any questions during this period. Due to the relocation of child care to the Wentworth School and Narragansett, there will be no interim care available the week before summer day camp begins (June 18 through 22, 2012). Summer day camp for 2012 will be offered for children entering Grades K through 9. Summer day camp for pre-school children will not be offered due to space limitations. Grades K to 5: Campers and parents must check in and check out daily in the temporary Summer Day Camp Office located in the Wentworth Building (accessible through the large double doors across from Wentworth playground area). Campers and parents must check in daily in the Middle School Cafeteria and check out daily (anytime after 4:30 pm) in the temporary Summer Day Camp Office located in the Wentworth Building (accessible through the large double doors across from Wentworth playground area). Parents may park in the staff parking lot accessible from Quentin Drive (road to the Middle School). Check-In/Check-Out parking spots will be set aside for parents convenience. Parents volunteering on trips may park in this same lot if spots are available. Overflow parking will be available by the Passamaquoddy Building at the Middle School and the outdoor basketball courts by the library. Parents will have access to the bus loop, the parent drop-off loop, and the Passamaquoddy Building parking lot to the left of the Middle School Building. Parents volunteering on trips must park in the lot located near the Passamaquoddy Building. Most of our summer youth programs are held outdoors and will run rain or shine. While we do our best to provide rain shelter for these programs, we cannot guarantee this space will be indoors, like a gym or cafeteria. Limited Interim Care

Child Care Administrative Office Location Bessworth Beginners Pre-School Program Child care administrative offices will be located in the Scarborough Middle School Narragansett Building during the duration of the new Wentworth Building project. Due to the construction of the new Wentworth School and consequent relocation of Bessworth, the Bessworth Beginners Pre-School program will no longer be offered past June 2012. Grades 3 to 5 before-school and after-school child care will be held in the Wentworth Building beginning fall 2012. Parents may use the bus circle across from the turf field to park while picking up or dropping off. Parking and child care locations are both subject to change at any point during the construction phase. Snow days, teacher workshop days, and vacation experience camps will be held in the cafeteria and Narragansett Building at the Middle School. Due to space limitations, we will not be able to offer Date Nights for Parents during the construction of the new Wentworth School.

carborough Community Services welcomes new and past campers to Summer Day Camp 2012. Camp is open to any child entering Grades K through 9 in the fall. No pre-school camp available. We are looking forward to providing a safe environment where everyone can make new friends, explore and develop new skills, and simply have lots of fun! Art and gym activities, theme programming, field trips, and more will take place throughout the summer. The program is located in the Wentworth School for Grades K to 5 students and in the Middle School for Grades 6 to 9 students. Locations subject to change at any time due to the construction of the new Wentworth School. Our 2012 program schedule with a more detailed list of trips will be available by Friday, May 4, in the Community Services Office, the Child Care Office, or online. Schedules and trips are always subject to change; therefore, we recommend NOT choosing camp weeks based on the given schedule.

If children lose or misplace an item during the summer, please check the lost-andfound tables located in Wentworth and the Middle School. All unclaimed articles will be donated to charity after summer camp ends.
No per-day registrations are accepted; however, you have a choice of a 2-day, 3-day, or 4-day weekly program (specific days must be selected upon registration and changes will not be allowed). Register at the Community Services Office in the Municipal Building or the Child Care Office. Payment is due in full upon registration if signing up for individual weeks. Payment plans are available for full eight-week programs only and require payment through EFT -- please see Page 6 for more information. Non-residents will be charged $15 extra per week or $75 extra for all 8 weeks. AM and PM camp options are available for Grades K to 5 campers only -- no AM/PM camp for Grades 6 to 9 campers. Registrations are accepted up to one week prior to the start of the program or until the program is full. Late fees will apply.
Community Services transports campers by bus to swimming lessons and track meets and accompanies campers on foot to specialty camps. If campers have signed up for specialty camps, parents are responsible for providing the desk staff with an updated weekly schedule. Grades K to 5 campers have the option of staying on-site during any of the scheduled field trips with the exception of Friday (ALL campers must attend the scheduled Friday field trip). All field trips scheduled for Grades 6 to 9 campers are not optional as all staff members attend each trip.

Summer Day Camp Programs

SUMMER CAMP BREAKFAST, LUNCH, AND SNACK PROGRAMS
he Scarborough School Nutrition Program will be offering breakfast, lunch, and snack programs to all Kindergarten through Grade 9 campers for your convenience. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be offered in the Wentworth Cafeteria for Grades K to 5. Grades 6 to 9 campers will receive bagged breakfasts, lunches, and snacks. Morning and afternoon snacks consist of one snack and drink served before and after lunch. Lunch will include items such as pizza, chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, fruit and vegetables, milk or juice, etc. A Sunbutter (R) (made from sunflower seeds) and jelly sandwich will be available for campers who do not like the main dish. A bagged lunch will be provided on Friday field trips, or when the schedule requires. We must have a minimum of 50 campers registered for the program each week before breakfast or lunch may be purchased daily. Registration forms are available at Community Services and online but must be completed and returned along with payment to the Scarborough School Nutrition Program by Friday, June 15, 2012. SUMMER READING IS FUN!

rades K to 5 groups will have 20 minutes of regularly scheduled reading time daily. Counselors may read aloud to their groups. Campers are encouraged to bring books or magazines of interest from home. Campers may use this time toward their summer reading goals. We are also encouraging parents to register their children for the Scarborough Public Librarys Summer Read Game. Make sure to send your childs library card as groups will be visiting the library on a weekly basis.
FIELD TRIP SUPERVISION

ommunity Services continues to do its part to ensure every childs safety while at camp. Every camper in Kindergarten to Grade 5 who participates in any of our scheduled field trips while at day camp will be supervised in a small group. A summer recreation counselor or volunteer will accompany each group. Campers in Grades 6 to 9 will be placed in small groups and will have required check-in times throughout scheduled trips. Certain trips may require campers in Grades 6 to 9 to be assigned to a supervised group.

TRIP VOLUNTEERS
ommunity Services frequently uses volunteers to help with scheduled field trips. Volunteers are responsible for supervising an assigned group of campers while on the field trip. Please note that while parents and/or guardians are encouraged to volunteer there are a limited number of spaces available for each trip. Volunteers are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until all spots are filled. If the maximum number of volunteers is reached and there is still space available on the bus, parents still wishing to attend the field trip and ride the bus may do so but will be responsible for their own admission fees. If you are interested in volunteering for any of our field trips, you must contact a Community Services Summer Rec Coordinator in advance so the appropriate paperwork can be completed. Refrigerator and microwaves are not available for use by campers so please send snack and lunch packed accordingly. Breakfast, lunch, and/or snacks may be purchased through the Scarborough School Nutrition Program. Please see above for more information. Parents must apply sunscreen and/or insect repellant before dropping their child off at camp. In order for counselors and administrators to re-apply such products to campers throughout the day, the State of Maine requires consent upon registration. ommunity Services will once again be offering swimming lessons for boys and girls at the YMCA in Biddeford. Lessons are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for eight weeks and are taught by Red Cross certified aquatics instructors.
Transportation is provided for this program. The bus leaves the Wentworth staff parking lot (accessible from Quentin Drive) at 8:45 am and returns around 12:00 noon. Students will be split into two groups and will get a chance to participate in lessons and free swim during each session.

e will kick off Fall Soccer 2012 on August 25 at the Clifford Mitchell Sports Complex. At the Kick-Off players will meet their coaches and teammates, receive their team shirt, have their picture taken, and learn basic soccer skills. Games will begin Saturday, September 8, and run for six weeks through October 13, with one practice during the week for each team (determined by the coach at the coaches meeting). We will accept registrations as long as there is room on a team in the appropriate division. Shin guards are mandatory and mouth guards are highly recommended. Pre-school children must be four by October 15, 2012, in order to participate..
Changes in 2012
Divisions are now named after grade levels -- please be sure to register your child or children in the grade they will be entering in the 2012-2013 school year. Community Services will no longer be able to accept special team requests past August 10, 2012. Children who register beyond this date will be placed on the team with the fewest players in their appropriate division. We will be unable to make any exceptions. Players may request to be with two players or one player and one coach. We do not accept requests for practice days, game times, or T-shirt color. While we do our best, we cannot guarantee that your requests will be honored.

he School Age Child Care program is designed to provide children in kindergarten through fifth grade a safe and exciting place to be during their out-of-school hours. Our state-licensed program currently has an enrollment of over 300 students.
The goal of the program is to promote the physical, mental, social, and emotional development of each child by providing high-quality child care. Activities include outside play or indoor physical activity, crafts, science, cooking, special projects, clubs, and quiet times. A nutritious snack is provided daily. We view the home, school, community, and child care settings as complementary and interrelated domains that affect childrens growth and development. Club Teen -- Grades 6 to 8

The Club Teen program provides an opportunity for those in Grades 6 through 8 to work on their homework, gives them the chance to be with their peers after school, and provides the opportunity to play age-related games and activities. A n organized activity is offered every day. Club Teen is located in the Middle School Cafeteria (occasionally in the Applied Humanities Room or Narragansett Building). We must have a minimum enrollment of 20 students in order for this program to run. locAtions:
One payment option: $250 per month

Before-school and after-school care programs are conveniently located at each school in town: Wentworth School, Pleasant Hill School, Blue Point School, and Eight Corners School. Child care administrative offices will be located in the Scarborough Middle School Narragansett Building during the duration of the new Wentworth Building project. Please note that the pick-up/ drop-off location for Grades 3-5 child care will be the bus circle across from the turf field beginning fall 2012. This location is subject to change at any point during the construction phase. Before-school care opens at 7:00 am; after-school care closes at 6:00 pm. Snow days, teacher workshop days, and vacation camps are held in the Scarborough Middle School Narragansett Building. These extra days are included in regular child care fees, however, pre-registration is required and space is limited. Register at the Community Services Office. Pay in Full -- You may pay in full for the entire school year using cash, check, debit, or credit card. Registration fee will be due upon registration but full yearly child care amount will be invoiced separately and due during the first full week of September. Should you choose to pay in full, you will receive one month FREE. No refunds will be issued for unused service. Monthly Payment -- Paying fees monthly requires a completed Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) form at time of registration. EFT payments will be withdrawn once a month (on the 5th of each month) or bi-monthly (on the 5th and 19th of each month), September through June. Receipts may be accessed online using your user name and password.

PROGRAMMING CHANGES DUE TO NEW WENTWORTH SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION

Interim Care: Due to the relocation of child care to the Wentworth School and Narragansett Building, there will be no interim care available the week before summer day camp begins (June 18 through 22, 2012). Date Nights for Parents: Due to space limitations, we will not be able to offer Date Nights for Parents during the construction of the new Wentworth School. Before-School/After-School Care Pick-Up/Drop-Off Location -- Grades 3 to 5: Beginning fall 2012, this will be located in the bus circle across from the turf field. ts never too late to try surfing! Come join Aquaholics Surf Camp at Hurd Park (Pine Point Beach) for lessons. The class fee includes use of a wetsuit, a softboard, and instruction.
Due to safety concerns only softboards will be used. Wetsuits will be sized and fitted before camp begins. Student-to-instructor ratios are based on age and surfing ability. If the surf is big, more instructors will be present to ensure the safety of the participants. Piping Plover Habitats No dog shall enter a designated protected habitat area. No dog shall approach within 150 feet of an endangered piping plover habitat unless the dog is on a leash that is held by a responsible party. Piping Plover Ordinance: Fines range from $50 to $250. Piping Plover Federal Endangered Species: Dog owners are liable for pets actions; fines for taking an endangered species can be up to $25,000 to $50,000.

Dragonflies and Dunks

Nymphs eat mosquito larvae before the mosquitoes hatch. As adults, they catch mosquitoes on the fly. They do not sting or bite humans.
Option 1 - - Dragonfly Nymphs
Nymphs arrive in plastic containers with dampened paper. They should be placed at the waters edge in shallow, free-standing water where mosquitoes breed (areas where peepers can be heard or where cattails grow). Waters should be free of fish habitation as they will eat nymphs. 100 nymphs will cover approximately 1 to 2 acres.
How are Nymphs placed?
Dunks are small donut-shaped tablets. They have proven effective since their introduction in 1983. Dunks are made with B.T.I., a natural organic ingredient, which kills mosquitoes and black fly larvae feeding on it. They contain no poisonous chemicals and are harmless to other living things. They can be used during April, May, and June breeding. Dunks are placed one per 100 square feet of water surface. They may be broken into portions for small amounts of standing water such as bird baths, auto tires, rain barrels, ponds, ditches, flower pots, roof gutters wherever water collects. A string may be used through the center hole to anchor them in place. They are effective for 30 days or more and will reactivate after a rain if the area becomes dry. Order enough to repeat treatment throughout mosquito season.

What does Community Services use sponsorship money and donations for?
When businesses provide monetary donations, it is deposited into our Special Events account which is used to fund free family-friendly events throughout the year. When businesses donate items, such as gift certificates, services, tickets, coupons for free food or activities, gift baskets, or gift items, we offer these as prizes through raffles or silent auctions. This enables Community Services to generate money for future activities and events throughout the year.

How can the community help?

Local businesses, organizations, families, and individuals are welcome to donate items or time throughout the year to Community Services. We accept help from volunteers at all of our events (as needed) and we are always looking for gift certificates in small amounts, candy, coupons for free food or activities, and small trinkets (pencils, stickers, toys). These items are given out to children as prizes at some of our yearly events.
