CALLIGRAPHY CONTEST As Albaraka Turk Participation Bank, we are very happy to be holding the third Calligraphy Contest in 2011, the first and second of which were held in 2005 and 2008 as part of our activities in arts and culture. The art of calligraphy has always been a part of our cultural landscape because of the values it has come to symbolize throughout its millennial journey in history. It is one of the most prominent arts that represent the islamic aesthetics. What arts with a tradition need most today is promotion. 2.THE JURY OF THE CONTEST Honorary Members 1. Prof. Uur Derman 2. MISSION OF THE CONTEST To cherish, develop, encourage and promote the art of calligraphy, the most prominent art of the Islamic civilization and to establish a shared artistic understanding and taste. 4. SUBJECT The subject of the contest is Justice and People's Due Rights

5. SECRETARIAT OF THE CONTEST All communication regarding the contest will be carried out by Albaraka's Secretariat of the Calligraphy Contest. Albaraka's Corporate Communications Office will act as the secretariat. The secretariat's task is to organize the contest and it is in no way responsible for the decisions made by the jury or the results of the contest. REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE CONTEST a) Anyone who is capable of creating works of calligraphy can participate in the contest provided that he/she complies with the requirements laid out in this specification. b) Contestants can submit works in more than one section. However, works that can be submitted in each section is limited to one. The works to be submitted to the contest cannot be imitations, copies or ones that were previously published or exhibited somewhere else. c) The works to be submitted to the contest should be in accordance with the principles of the art of classical calligraphy. d) Contestants can write in their panels in any form that they wish, i.e.square, rectangle, vertical, horizontal provided that they stay within the specified measurements. The writings that are in the form of lines may have equal space on the right and left sides of the texts on the first, the middle and the last lines. e) Contestant can use any color of ink of their choosing. The panels will be written in classic colors on glossy calligraphy paper. Panels written on white paper or similar types of non-glossy paper will not be assessed. f) Works with obvious spelling errors will not be taken into consideration. However, the spelling of rasm-e osmani is allowed when writing the ayahs from the Quran. g) Contestants may use the phrases of at the beginning of ayahs and the phrases of at the end of ayahs if it suits to use any one of them to help with the composition. And in the arrangement of ahadith, the beginning phrases of and the ending

phrases of can be used whenever appropriate.vb. The phrase of may be added to these too.

h) The works submitted to the contest should not bear any signature or any other sign or indication of personal identity. I) Contestants should mail or submit in person their works to the specified address. Their work should be in the form of an unframed sheet of paper that is not pasted on paperboard and one that will also not be curled, scrunched or broken. Albaraka is not responsible in case of any damage to or delay in the shipment of, mailed works. j) Together with their calligraphy panel, contestants should include in the same envelope their resume complete with their photograph, personal identity information, mail address, phone and fax numbers as well as their e-mail address if they have one and information on their education and profession. k) Deadline for the submission of works to the secretariat of the contest is April 1st, 2012. l)Those who participate in this contest by submitting their work hereby agree to all the requirements laid out in this specification. 8. 9. In addition to these, there will be encouragement awards, each worthy of 1500 TL, for works chosen by the jury from among the remaining works.

10. COPYRIGHTS Contestants who participate in the contest by mailing or personally submitting their works hereby accept and confirm that they accept and will fulfill all the other provisions in this specification and those below. a. Contestants are the creators of their work. All financial and non-financial benefits as well as rights and entitlements on the work belong to the creator of that work and are not relinquished or transferred over to any real persons or legal entities in any way either partially or totally. b. Contestants who are the owners of prize-winning works transfer all their financial rights on their work to Albaraka Turk Contribution Bank Co. without the necessity of a separate contract or a demand for an additional charge, fee or price other than the prize money or any restriction on time, place or content. c. The works that are not recipients of any prizes or encouragement awards will be returned at the headquarters of Albaraka Turk Contribution Bank at the following address: Saray Mahallesi, Dr. Adnan Buyukdeniz Caddesi, No: 6, Umraniye/Istanbul within a year after the announcement of the results of the contest. Contestants who do not collect their works within the time limit will have transferred all of their financial rights on their works to Albaraka Turk Contribution Bank without any charge and without the necessity of a separate contract or any restriction of time, place or content. d. Based on the provisions above, Albaraka Turk Contribution Bank, as the proprietor of the financial rights of the regarding works including utilization, reproduction, representation and/or publication via symbol, sound or image without any restrictions of time, place and content is entitled to use these rights herein by broadcasting and/or publishing the regarding works on TV, internet and through other media, by transferring these works on various media such as catalogues, brochures, posters, booklets, books, agendas, calendars, magazines, CDs, video, etc., and by publishing and/or broadcasting and distributing these works, by utilizing them in activities at home or abroad and by transferring these rights to third parties, all without being limited to these options. e. Prizes for the winning works will be presented to their owners at a ceremony where other works too will be exhibited. The date of the ceremony and the exhibition will be announced after the announcemet of the contest results. f. Prize-winning works will be published as a catalogue. g. In case of any changes to the personal or address information given by the contestants, the changes must be immediately communicated in written form. h. Albaraka Turk Contribution Bank Co. does not hold any responsibility in case of any loss or damage to works for any reason either during the process of delivering/sending/transporting works to Albaraka Turk Contribution Bank or in the time that passes before the owners collect their works that did not win any awards.

11. SECTIONS OF THE CONTEST AND REGARDING TEXTS The calligraphy contest will be held in the following sections. The works that are submitted in the sections stated here will be assessed. Works that are not in these sections will not be assessed. a) Jali Thuluth Only one of the following texts will be written. The texts in Turkish will be arranged in the form of lines. The nib of the pen to be used should not be less then 6 mm. The size of panels should not be smaller than 40x60 and not bigger than 60x70 cm. The space taken by the writing should be about 2/3rd 's of the whole paper. Between these sizes, contestants may use any size of their choosing in any shape i.e. square, rectangle, circle, oval or free-style composition, horizontally or vertically.

1. O ye who believe! Squander not your wealth among yourselves in vanity, except it be a trade by mutual consent, and kill not one another. Lo! Allah is ever Merciful unto you. (4/29)

2 And do not swallow up your property among yourselves by false means, neither seek to gain access thereby to the judges, so that you may swallow up a part of the property of men wrongfully while you know. (2/188)

3 O you who believe! Be upright for Allah, bearers of witness with justice, and let not hatred of a people incite you not to act equitably; act equitably, that is nearer to piety, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is Aware of what you do. (5/8)

4.Surely Allah enjoins the doing of justice and the doing of good (to others) and the giving to the kindred, and He forbids indecency and evil and rebellion; He admonishes you that you may be mindful. (16/90)

5. A Muslim is he from whose hand and tongue the Muslim's are safe. (Bukhari, Iman, 4-5; Riqaq, 26; Muslim, Iman, 64-65) This text will not be arranged as a line.

6.A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He neither oppresses him nor treats him unfairly nor betrays him to the enemy. (Bukhari, Mazalim 3, Muslim, Birr 58.) This text will not be arranged as a line.

7.Pay to labourer his wages before his sweat dries. (Ibn Majah, Ahqam 2443.) This text will not be arranged as a line.


8. I cannot possibly hail oppression, nor can I ever like an oppressor, I would never attempt to swear at the past to please the ones at present (Mehmed Akif Ersoy)

b) Thuluth Only one of the following texts will be written. The number of lines should not be less than 5. The nib of the pen should not be shorter than 1,5 mm and longer than 3 mm. The size of panels should not be smaller than 40x60 cm and bigger than 60x70 cm. Contestants are free to use any size within these limits.

1. All of you are shepherds, and all of you are responsible for your flocks. A trustee is a shepherd, and he is responsible. A man is a shepherd for his family, and he is responsible. A woman is a shepherd over the home, and she is responsible. A servant is the shepherd over his master's property and he is responsible. Verily, all of you are shepherds. (Bukhari, Jumaa 11, Ahqam 1; Muslim, Imaret 20.)

2.Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Don't nurse grudge and don't bid him out for raising the price and don't nurse aversion or enmity and don't enter into a transaction when the others have entered into that transaction and be as fellowbrothers and servants of Allah. A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He neither oppresses him nor humiliates him nor looks down upon him. The piety is here, (and while saying so) he pointed towards his chest thrice. It is a serious evil for a Muslim that he should look down upon his brother Muslim. All things of a Muslim are inviolable for his brother in faith: his blood, his wealth and his honour. (Muslim, Birr 32.)

3. Abu Huraira. reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Do you know who is poor? They (the Companions of the Holy Prophet) said: A poor man amongst us is one who has neither dirham with him nor wealth. He (the Holy Prophet) said: The poor of my Umma would be he who would come on the Day of Resurrecton with prayers and fasts and Zakat but (he would find himself bankrupt on that day as he would have exhausted his funds of virtues) since he hurled abuses upon others, brought calumny against others and unlawfully consumed the wealth of others and shed the blood of others and beat others, and his virtues would be credited to the account of one (who suffered at his hand). And if his good deeds fall short to clear the account, then his sins would be entered in (his account) and he would be thrown in the Hell-Fire. (Muslim, Birr 59.)

c) Thuluth-naskh In addition to the following texts, contestants can write any amount of the texts given in the sections of jali thuluth, thuluth, jali taliq and jali diwani in any form they wish provided that they pay close attention to the arrangement and composition of meaning and stick to the principles. The nib of the thuluth pen should not be shorter than 1.5 mm and not longer than 3 mm while the nib of the naskh pen should not be longer than 1 mm. The panel size is between 35x50 cm and 50x70 cm. Contestants are free to choose any size between these dimensions. Writings in thuluth should not be less than 5 (five) lines and the naskh texts should not be less than 10 (ten) lines.

1. O you who believe! be maintainers of justice, bearers of witness of Allah's sake, though it may be against your own selves or (your) parents or near relatives; if he be rich or poor,

Allah is nearer to them both in compassion; therefore do not follow (your) low desires, lest you deviate; and if you swerve or turn aside, then surely Allah is aware of what you do. O you who believe! believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Book which He has revealed to His Messenger and the Book which He revealed before; and whoever disbelieves in Allah and His angels and His messengers and the last day, he indeed strays off into a remote error. Surely (as for) those who believe then disbelieve, again believe and again disbelieve, then increase in disbelief, Allah will not forgive them nor guide them in the (right) path. (4: 135137)

For this reason did We prescribe to the children of Israel that whoever slays a soul, unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land, it is as though he slew all men; and whoever keeps it alive, it is as though he kept alive all men; and certainly Our messengers came to them with clear arguments, but even after that many of them certainly act extravagantly in the land. (5/32)

3. O you who believe! do not devour your property among yourselves falsely, except that it be trading by your mutual consent; and do not kill your people; surely Allah is Merciful to you. (4/29)

4. And do not swallow up your property among yourselves by false means, neither seek to gain access thereby to the judges, so that you may swallow up a part of the property of men wrongfully while you know. (2/188)

5. Except those who believe and do good and remember Allah much, and defend themselves after they are oppressed; and they who act unjustly shall know to what final place of turning they shall turn back. (26:227)

6. Be on your guardagainst committing oppression, for oppression is a darkness on the Day of Resurrection, and be on your guard against stinginess for stinginess destroyed those who were before you, as it incited them to shed blood and make lawful what was unlawful for them. (Muslim, Birr 56)

7. The best of your rulers are those whom you love and who love you, who invoke God's blessings upon you and you invoke His blessings upon them. And the worst of your rulers are those whom you hate and who hate you and whom you curse and who curse you. (Muslim, el-Imara 65, 66)

8. The inmates of Paradise are three: One who wields authority and is just and fair, one who Is truthful and has been endowed with power to do good deeds. And the person who is merciful and kind hearted towards his relatives and to every pious Muslim, and one who does not stretch his hand in spite of having a large family to support. (Muslim, Al-Jannat 63).

9. Abu Musa reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, grants respite to the oppessor. But when He lays Hand upon him, He does not then let him off. Re (the Holy Prophet) then recited this verse:" Such is the chastisement of thy Lord when He chastises the towns (inhabited by) wrongdoing persons. Surely, His punishment is painful, severe." (Bukhari, Tafsiru Surah (11); Muslim, Birr 61.)

10. Beware of the supplication of the oppressed for there is no barrier between him and Allah. (Bukhari, Zakat 41, 63; Muslim, Iman 29, 31.)

11."Whoever has oppressed another person concerning his reputation, honour or wealth, he should beg him to forgive him before the Day of Resurrection when there will be no money (to compensate for wrong deeds), but if he has good deeds, those good deeds will be taken from him according to his oppression which he has done, and if he has no good deeds, the sins of the oppressed person will be loaded on him." (Bukhari, Mazalim 10, Riqaq 48.)

12. It is narrated on the authority of Abu Umama that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed: He who appropriated the right of a Muslim by (swearing a false) oath, Allah would make Hell-fire necessary for him and would declare Paradise forbidden for him. A person said to him: Messenger of Allah, even if it is something insignificant? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: (Yes) even if it is the twig of the arak tree. (Muslim, man 218.)

13. I am only a human being. You bring to me, for (judgment) your disputes, some of you perhaps being more eloquent in their plea than others, so I give judgment on their behalf according to what I hear from them. (Bear in mind, in my judgment) if I slice off anything for him from the right of his brother, he should not accept that, for I sliced off for him a portion from the Hell. (Bukhari, Shadah 27; Hiyel 10; Ahqam 20; Muslim, Aqdiyya 4.)

14. "Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is an oppressed one. People asked, "O Allah's Apostle! It is all right to help him if he is oppressed, but how should we help him if he is an oppressor?" The Prophet said, "By preventing him from oppressing others." (Bukhari, Mazalim 4; Iqrah 6.)

15. "If any ruler having the authority to rule Muslim subjects dies while he is deceiving them, Allah will forbid Paradise for him." (Bukhari, Ahkaam 8; Muslim, Iman 227-228; Imara 21) There is another version of this hadith: "Any man whom Allah has given the authority of ruling some people and he does not look after them in an honest manner, will never feel even the smell of Paradise."

(Bukhari, Ahkaam 8) Also, there is this account in Muslim: A ruler who, having obtained control over the affairs of the Muslims, does not strive for their betterment and does not serve them sincerely shall not enter Paradise with them. (Muslim, Iman 229, Imara 22.)

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Aisha bint Abu Bakr: 16. Allah's Apostle said in this house of mine: O God, who (happens to) acquire some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is hard upon them-be Thou hard upon him, and who (happens to) acquire some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is kind to them-be Thou kind to him. (Muslim, Imara 19.)

17. People with a position of authority who treat their family and their people fairly and observe justice in their judgments will sit on lofty thrones of light next to God on the Day of Judgment. (Muslim, Imara 18.)

18. Five are the rights of a Muslim over his brother: responding to salutation, saying Yarhamuk Allah when anybody sneezes and says al-Hamdulillah, visiting the sick. following the bier. ' Abd al-Razzaq said that this hadith has been transmitted as mursal hadith from Zuhri and he then substantiated it on the authority of Ibn Musayyib. (Bukhari, Janaiz; Muslim, Selam 4)

d) Jali Taliq Only one of the texts below will be written. The nib of the pen should not be shorter than 8 mm. Panel sizes is between 40x60 cm and 60x70 cm. Contestants are free to use any size within these dimensions.

1. Surely Allah enjoins the doing of justice and the doing of good (to others) and the giving to the kindred, and He forbids indecency and evil and rebellion; He admonishes you that you may be mindful. (An-Nahl, 16/90)

2. Surely Allah commands you to make over trusts to their owners and that when you judge between people you judge with justice. (An-Nisa, 4/58)

3. The Compassionate One has mercy on those who are merciful. If you show mercy to

those who are on the earth, He Who is in the heaven will show mercy to you. (Hadith-Abu Dawud)


4. To the complete person, there is no better criterion of justice than tears of mercy And no piece of wisdom equals knowing one's own imperfection (Mehmed Talib of Bursa)

5. I cannot call one without purity of bosom a man of heart It is only fair that the people of heart know one another (Nef'i)


6. Gifted people, like a candle on a night at a congregation of wisdom, Burn themselves out and yet attain the morning they have desired (Muhibbi'l-Amidi)

e) Jali Diwani Only one of the texts below will be written. The nib of the pen should not be shorter than 5 mm. Panel sizes are between 40x60 cm and 60x70 cm. Contestants are free to use any size within these limits. Number of lines will not be more than two.

1. O you who believe! be maintainers of justice, bearers of witness of Allah's sake, though it may be against your own selves or (your) parents or near relatives; if he be rich or poor, Allah is nearer to them both in compassion; therefore do not follow (your) low desires, lest you deviate; and if you swerve or turn aside, then surely Allah is aware of what you do. And serve Allah and do not associate any thing with Him and be good to the parents and to the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the neighbor of (your) kin and the alien neighbor, and the companion in a journey and the wayfarer and those whom your right hands possess; surely Allah does not love him who is proud, boastful. (4/36)

3. O you who believe! let not (one) people laugh at (another) people perchance they may be better than they, nor let women (laugh) at (other) women, perchance they may be better than they; and do not find fault with your own people nor call one another by nicknames; evil is a bad name after faith, and whoever does not turn, these it is that are the unjust. (49/11)

4. O you who believe! Be upright for Allah, bearers of witness with justice, and let not hatred of a people incite you not to act equitably; act equitably, that is nearer to piety, and he careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is Aware of what you do. Allah has promised to those who believe and do good deeds (that) they shall have forgiveness and a mighty reward. (5/8-9)

5. Abu Huraira narrated to us from Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said this: Sadaqa is due on every joint of a person, every day the sun rises. Administering of justice between two men is also a Sadaqa. And assisting a man to ride upon his beast, or helping him load his luggage upon it, is a Sadaqa; and a good word is a Sadaqa; and every step that you take towards prayer is a Sadaqa, and removing of harmful things from the pathway is a Sadaqa. (Bukhari, Sulh 11; Muslim, Zakat 56)
