006-069 Step Timing Control Electronic Control Unit

Initial Check
The gauge should record a change in the oil pressure following the graph to the right. Then when engine speed is below rated speed and the rail pressure is below threshold number 1, the tappets will have oil pressure, causing advanced mode operation. Advanced mode operation will occur above rated speed when the rail pressure is below threshold number 2. Operation of the engine with rail pressure above the threshold and speed described will result in retard mode operation, which disables oil pressure to the tappets.

Electronic step timing control module light emitting diode is OFF with the Keyswitch ON and the engine not started. This means that the module has an electronic problem. Key ON/OFF six times to clear any faults in the electronic step timing control module. Wait at least three seconds between key ON and key OFF.

Install
Install the new module and bracket, to the block as shown using the lower row of bosses. Tighten the capscrews . Torque Value: 47 n.m [35 ft-lb ]

Extra spacers, will possibly be needed to allow clearance between this bracket and the engine block for pressure sensors or other OEM-installed items in the area.

Once the kit is completely installed, check that the calibration plug is installed in the module cable. NOTE: Once the module has been powered up with the calibration plug installed, it will always remember that calibration and can not be changed.

Connect the harness 15.24-cm [6-in] onering terminal lead to the electronic step timing control solenoid. Tighten the nut. Torque Value: 3 n.m [27 in-lb ]

Ground the large ring terminal on the 63.5cm [25-in] harness with the fuse holder to an appropriate engine block ground.

Make sure that the connection point is clean and paint free for a good ground.

Connect the 63.5-cm [25-in] harness lead (with fuse holder) one-ring terminal ring to the engine fuel pump shutoff valve solenoid. Tighten the nut. Torque Value: 3 n.m [27 in-lb ]

There should now be two wires on the engine fuel pump shutoff valve solenoid: The original supply wire and the one from the electronic step timing control module. This is where the electronic step timing control kit will receive the supply power.

Connect the engine speed sensor.

Connect the rail pressure sensor harness.

Connect the ground wire from the block and the power supply wire from the electronic step timing control solenoid.

Connect the 12- or 24-VDC supply wire for the electronic step timing control. NOTE: This step applies only to nonCentry applications.

Install the wire ties securing the harness.

Calibrate
Install a Compuchek fitting in the side of the electronic step timing control solenoid valve body and then connect a gauge to that location to monitor the oil pressure.

After electronic step timing control module has been calibrated: First keyswitch ON, and engine rpm greater than 600, the electronic step timing control will function according to graphic. Second through fifth keyswitch ON, and engine rpm greater than 600, the electronic step timing control will operate in advanced for approximately 30 seconds, then function according to graphic. Sixth or more keyswitch ON, and engine rpm greater than 600, electronic step timing control will operate in advanced for 10

minutes then function according to graphic.

Turn the keyswitch ON: do not start the engine. Next, check that the light emitting diode on the electronic step timing control module is flashing. If the light emitting diode is flashing, this is normal, and indicates that everything is OK. Light emitting diode is ON steady. This means that you do not have a calibration plug installed or it is not seated in the connector. Check the calibration plug. Light emitting diode is OFF. This means that you do not have power to the electronic step timing control module. Follow the steps in the Symptoms section of this procedure. For a properly working system, the light emitting diode will flash for 5 minute or until engine speed is greater than 600 rpm, whichever occurs first.

Use service tool, ST434-2 (hose adapter assembly), and a pressure gauge, to plumb the oil feed line that sends engine oil to the overhead, and check the operation of the electronic step timing control valve under various loads and speeds to make sure the valve is switching.

When engine speed is below rated speed and the rail pressure is below threshold number 1, the tappets will have oil pressure causing advanced mode operation.

Advanced mode operation will occur above rated speed when the rail pressure is below threshold number 2. Operation of the engine with rail pressure above the threshold and speed described will result in retard mode operation, which disables oil pressure to the tappets.

Troubleshooting
1. Electronic step timing control module light emitting diode flashing, keyswitch ON, and engine not started. The electronic step timing control module is operating properly. 2. Electronic step timing control module light emitting diode ON, keyswitch ON, and engine not started. The probable cause is the electronic step timing control module calibration plug is not installed. Correct by installing the correct calibration plug for engine control parts list in module harness. Keyswitch ON/OFF six times to clear any faults in the electronic step timing control module. Wait at least three seconds between keyswitch ON and keyswitch OFF. 3. Electronic step timing control module light emitting diode not ON, keyswitch ON, and engine not started. The probable cause is the electronic step timing control module has a problem with one of the input sensors or power supply to the module from the fuel shutoff valve.

Correct by referring to procedures 006-041 (STC Viscosity Sensor, 006-036 (STC Oil Control Valve Electrical), 019-181(Step Timing Control Valve Solenoid), or 019-032 (ECM Calibration Code) in this installation instruction to check power supply and input sensors. Keyswitch ON/OFF six times to clear any faults in the electronic step timing control module. Wait at least three seconds between keyswitch ON and keyswitch OFF. 4. Electronic step timing control module light emitting diode flashes once, keyswitch ON, and engine not started. The probable cause is the fault has been logged in the electronic step timing control module from intermittent power supply, a faulty fuel rail pressure sensor, or powering up the module without the fuel rail pressure sensor connected. Refer to procedures 006-041 (STC Viscosity Sensor, 006-036 (STC Oil Control Valve - Electrical), 019-181 (Step Timing Control Valve Solenoid), or 019-032 (ECM Calibration Code) in back of the installation instruction to check power supply and input sensors. Keyswitch ON/OFF six times to clear any faults in the electronic step timing control module. Wait at least three seconds between keyswitch ON and keyswitch OFF. Equipment needed to perform the installation, Test and Troubleshooting the Electronic Step Timing Control System: 1. Digital multimeter or equivalent 2. Service Tool ST434-2, 45 1.27 cm [1/2-in] o-ring fitting, or 90 1.27 cm [1/2-in] o-ring fitting 3. Pressure gauge and connectors for number 2 above 4. Rail pressure sensor breakout cable.
