Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page. Mobile phones and computers of any kind should not be brought inside the examination hall. Use of any unfair means will result in severe disciplinary action.

Q.1

Answer the following briefly (word limit for each part: maximum 50 words). 1.1. 1.2. 1.3. 1.4. 1.5. Why image compression applied to individual frames of captured video is not an effective solution to compress captured video? Why hierarchical mode of JPEG compression is important? Which features (write about any two) of speech are used to distinguish different phonemes by software? What is the order of storage density (in bit / mm2) available on CD-ROM? Why B-frames can provide higher compression as compared to P-frames? [[2 x 5 = 10]

Q.2

Solve the following and answer in proper unit. There will be no partial marking.

A 6 kHz signal is sampled with 9 kHz. What will be the frequency of sampled signal? Find the compression ratio achieved when we compress the string deed using the Huffman codes given in the Table 1. Assume that originally a character of the given string is represented using 8 bit. It is required to store a 24-bit true colour (with spatial resolution 1024 x 768) uncompressed video of 3-hours duration on CDs of capacity 700 MB each. How many such CDs will be required? Given 1 KB = 1024 Byte, 1 MB = 1024 KB. If the signal 1024*sin(t + /2 ), where = 8 x 105 radian/second, is sampled at double the Nyquist frequency, what is the time interval (in sec) at which the signal is sampled ? Calculate Entropy Draw Huffman tree (optimised) Find Huffman Codes (optimised) Find compression ratio when Huffman coding (optimised) is used. Assume originally that the each character is stored using 7-bit and also assume that the size of the table of Huffman codes is not considered in the size of the compressed data. [2 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 10]

Q.4

Solve the following: 4.1. For an animated (20 frames per second) motion of a ball how much maximum speed (in the terms of pixel width per second) can be achieved if the ball travels (horizontally only) a distance of 1024 horizontal pixels in one second. At the start the ball is assumed to be located stationary at the pixel position 0 and at the end the ball stops at the pixel position 1023. Between these extreme positions first the ball is uniformly accelerated till middle pixel (i.e. pixel 511) and then the ball is uniformly de-accelerated so that it can stop at the pixel position 1023. Estimate the data rates (in Kbit/s) of the following audio coding schemes: A. B. C. D. PCM (CD Quality) PCM (Telephone Quality) DPCM (Telephone Quality) ADPCM (Telephone Quality)
