Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA)/Collision Avoidance (CA) to sense the medium for other transmissions before transmitting, and hence avoid collision. Also avoids collisions with hidden nodes by using RTS/CTS transmissions.

WiFi network robustness - avoiding non-WiFi devices in the same band


Recognizing the signature of the interference (e.g. microwave, baby monitors, BT etc.) Selection the appropriate WiFi channel to operate.
