The National Maritime Centre for the Pacific and the Arctic (NMC) had all the ingredients for success A well-supported and vibrant concept Substantial community partnerships Significant private sector support A unique and robust business model

The NMC was poised to become the West Coast hub for maritime activity and education, bringing together

Historic artifacts New media Maritime training Forums and events . . . to be a year-round destination for residents and visitors

The NMC was set to open in 2009 But this ship never sailed. Why?

To create a destination waterfront location with key public attraction for local residents and tourists

To celebrate our maritime connection past, present and future

To provide access to the water and space for events

CREATIVE CONCEPT: VISION

The NMC is key to the Citys overall waterfront vision, an important element to the Pier Development already underway

The NMC serves many purposes. . .

CREATIVE CONCEPT: PARTNERSHIPS

The NMC project successfully built partnerships and relationships with community and business stakeholders who Provided input alongside consultants and museum staff Contributed to decision-making Co-created and helped implement programs

Example: The Canadian Power and Sail Squadron... Had strong relationships with members who were explorers and professional hobbyists Informed the concept development for exhibits and programs Advocated by writing letters of support and appearing at a public hearing Supported provincial and federal grant applications

The Canadian Power and Sail Squadron (CPSS)... Could help contribute to the NMCs long-term financial and operational sustainability Recognized that it would be part of a mutually beneficial partnership

Application... You need to build champions at all levels of the decision-making process Partnerships based on deep and sustained relationships benefit everyone involved Museums succeed by building agreements that sustain these relationships and developing tools to measure their impact
