SOAP UPDATES By Dana Block THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Hope and Liam basked in the notion that Steffy was no longer a part of their lives and made plans to marry right away. Taylor pointed out to Brooke how Hope was following in her footsteps. Meanwhile, Steffy vowed to get Liam back no matter what. Rick promised his sister, Hope, that he would make up for lost time. Taylor tried to talk Liam into giving his marriage to Steffy another try. Hope prepared to make an important announcement to the press. Steffy delivered shocking news to Liam about their marriage after he asked for an annulment. Wait to See: Hope and Steffy get into a physical altercation. Ridge makes some changes at Forrester Creations. *** DAYS OF OUR LIVES The DiMeras and Hortons appeared to have swapped identities as Jennifer told a lie that could sway the election, while the unusually timid Stefano worried about the letter. The aftermath of Sami witnessing Carrie and Rafes kiss had major consequences. As Carrie turned to Marlena for support, a drunk Austin turned to Abigail, who had an agenda all her own. Rafe and Carrie contemplated cutting all ties, personally and professionally. Austin woke up the next morning wrongly assuming that he had slept with Abigail. Brady asked Madison an important question that left a bitter taste in Nicoles mouth. Wait to See: Brady discovers Madisons connection to Ian. Stefano finally opens his letter from Alice. WHAT TO COOK? After grocery shopping, I write out a list of all the meals I can make with the groceries I have on hand and post it to the side of the refrigerator. When I make a meal, I cross it off my list. This is a visual reminder to use up what I have on hand. Before I started doing this, I would forget about a lot of the things I had in my pantry and freezer and feel that I had to run to the store and spend more money to make dinner. Now I really try to use up what I have. -Becky M. in Searcy, AR

Quite simply, warehouse pricing saves you time and money. Today many dealers are in the habit of cleaning up vehicles for their used car lots and simply marking them up 4 to 5 thousand dollars and hoping an uninformed customer walks in and takes the bait. Not at Paul Browns! With the power of the internet todays car shoppers are smarter than ever. With a few clicks, buyers can find plenty of vehicles to choose from and quickly realize whats a good deal and whats not. We save you the time. Before a vehicle hits our lot we scan the market within a 300 mile radius to survey how each dealer has priced similar vehicles. Over 25,000 websites are surveyed as well as local newspapers and classifieds. With that information in hand we carefully price our vehicle to be within the top ten percent of the market for similar vehicles. Regardless of profit or loss, thats where they are priced. Why? To save you time, and help us be assured that we are providing a good car at a good value. We are not guessing at it like other dealers, we can show you what a great deal you are getting. On every vehicle on our lot you will find a copy of the nationally recognized Kelley Blue Book retail value. Below that you will find our Paul Brown Warehouse Price (usually thousands under Kelley Blue Book). Our vehicles are re-priced weekly so keep checking back with us, sometimes the deals get even sweeter. Dont wait long though, with warehouse pricing, over 90 percent of our inventory is sold within 30 days.

COLLECTING: By Larry Cox Cast-Iron Doorstop Q: I have a cast-iron doorstop that has been in my family for at least three generations. It is a rabbit dressed in top hat and tails. The item is in fairly good condition. -Beth, Amarillo, Texas A: Your doorstop was probably manufactured by National Foundry and is valued in the $75 to $150 range, according to Kovels Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide by Ralph and Terry Kovel (Black Dog & Leventhal books). Doorstops were especially popular during the late Victorian-era. *** Q: I have a Victorian-era Bible that was published in Glasgow, perhaps during the 1880s. It has a deluxe binding with metal latches and thick back and front covers. Letters found in the Bible are from the 1890s. It is in excellent condition, and I would like to determine its value. -- Judith, Placitas, N.M. A: I contacted several used and rare book dealers who told me that most highly decorative Victorianera Bibles sell in the $75 to $150 range, depending on condition and content. By content, I mean personal family information recorded in its pages. A Bible from the Civil War period could be quite valuable if it has information pertaining to the war or was owned by a historically important family. William J. Chamberlin is vicepresident of the International Society of Bible Collectors, and verily I say unto you, he might be able to determine the value of your Bible. His contact information is 6413 Snow Apple Drive, Clarkson,

MI 48346; and research@biblemuseum.org. It is always good manners to enclose a SASE when contacting an expert or source listed in this column.

MONEY FOR COLLEGE: FAFSA DOS AND DONTS Albany, NY (02/03/2012)(readMedia)- Theres help applying for college financial aid during Student Financial Aid Awareness Month. Now through February 25, New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) is helping students and families complete the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid with a website, www.startheregetthere.org toll-free hotline and free FAFSA completion workshops across the State. The FAFSA determines eligibility for federal student financial aid programs such as Pell Grants, Stafford Loans and federal work-study. Its also the basis for determining eligibility for New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) grants and other state and college-based scholarships and aid programs. HESCs FAFSA Hotline at 1-800-808-1790 is open every Tuesday and Thursday between noon and 5pm through February 28 or email anytime to FAFSAhelp@hesc.org Here are dos and donts to keep in mind as you complete the FAFSA: DO: Complete the FAFSA online. Its faster, easier and more accurate than the paper version. Log on at www.hesc.org Prepare your federal income taxes early and have your parents prepare theirs early, too. Much of the financial information required on the FAFSA comes from your federal tax form. If you estimate and there is a difference in reported income, you can file an updated FAFSA later. You can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool inside your FAFSA to easily update your financial information. Get a PIN. You and your parents need a Federal Student Aid Personal Identification Number (PIN) to electronically sign your FAFSA; get one at www.pin.ed.gov Your PIN is as important as your bank PIN, so dont share it with anyone. File a FAFSA each year you attend college to request aid. The online FAFSA will remember you from previous applications, so you will provide only updated information. Remember, when the FAFSA refers to you, and your, it means, you, the student, NOT your parents or family. Use your legal name, as shown on your Social Security card. Enter your Social Security Number (SSN) carefully. An incorrect SSN may delay your FAFSA and you may miss important college financial aid deadlines. You may have to submit copies of your birth certificate and Social Security card to correct an error before your FAFSA is processed. Read every question carefully and complete every field according to the instructions on the FAFSA. The computer reads a blank as an error. The online form uses skip logic to keep you from answering unnecessary questions. Answer both to the questions asking about your interest in different types of federal aid, such as work-study and student loans. You are not obligated to accept offers you dont want and answering no will not increase your eligibility or afford additional grant money. Count yourself, the student, as one of the people in your family who will be college students during the award year. Look for the New York link on the FAFSA confirmation page. You may be eligible for a New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) grant. New York residents who select any college in New York State to receive information will be directed to the TAP application by a link from the FAFSA confirmation page. Carefully review the Student Aid Report (SAR) that is e-mailed to you after the FAFSA has been processed. Make sure the SAR doesnt indicate any problems such as a missing signature or incorrect financial information. You can make corrections to the FAFSA at the FAFSA Web site. DONT: Assume you dont qualify for financial aid. At least 1.7 million students nationwide dont complete a FAFSA because they think they are ineligible. About one-third of these students would have qualified for a Pell Grant; about one-sixth would have qualified for a full Pell Grant, worth $5,500. Procrastinate - complete the online FAFSA as soon as possible. Many colleges have early deadlines for consideration of scholarships, grants and other forms of financial aid, so check your colleges Web site for specific deadlines. Use decimal points when completing financial sections. Decimals are not recognized during processing, so $500.00 will be misread as $50,000. Forget, the first word in FAFSA is Free. Beware of anyone charging a fee to file the FAFSA for you. There is no secret method of qualifying for more aid, nor do you have to pay to file the application. The FAFSA is your key to federal student financial aid, so file as soon as possible and take advantage of the maximum federal funding for which you qualify. About HESC: HESC is New York States student financial aid agency that helps people pay for college and a national leader in providing need-based grant and scholarship award money to college-going students. At HESCs core are programs like the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), numerous state scholarships, the New York Higher Education Loan Program (NYHELPs), federal college access grants and a highly successful College Savings program. HESC puts college within the reach of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers each year through programs like these and through the guidance it provides to students, families and counselors. In 2010-11, HESC helped more than 413,000 students achieve their college dreams by providing $991 million in grants, scholarships and federal student loan guarantees, including $855 million awarded through the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). f

SHOPPING FOR ELECTRICITY Penn State Extension offered two workshops on shopping for electricity in Ridgway and Smethport on Thurs., Feb. 2, 2012. Dr. D e n n i s Buffington, Professor of Ag and Biological Engineering in the College of Ag Sciences at Penn State University, explained to the seminar participants that they can now choose who generates their electricity. West Penn Power Customers now have 7 alternative suppliers and Penelec Customers have 10 alternatives. The PA Public Utility Commission maintains an up-to-date list of all licensed suppliers of electricity at http://www.papowerswitch.com/shopfor-electricty/ As always, it is important to read the fine print of the alternative suppliers offer. For example, some contracts have a one hundred and fifty dollar fee if the contract is cancelled early. by Scott Farris; Reviewed by Larry Cox How different would our country be today if Adlai Stevenson had beaten Dwight Eisenhower in 1952, Barry Goldwater had won in 1964 or Al Gore had been inaugurated president after the election of 2000? Although these men didnt get to move into the White House, they nevertheless helped transform our nation. Scott Farris, a former bureau chief for United Press International and a political columnist, has covered several national campaigns and even tried to win a congressional race in Wyoming in 1998, a seat vacated by Dick Cheney. After being defeated, he began thinking about the role played by losing candidates in a democracy. The result is this fascinating book. Farris profiles nine presidential also-rans: including three-time losers Henry Clay and William Jennings Bryan, Stephen Douglas, Al Smith, Thomas E. Dewey, George McGovern and Ross Perot. One of the more interesting men profiled is Henry Clay, who once

stated that he would rather be right than president. Clay, one the greatest legislators in U.S. history, was a Southerner by birth and a Westerner by choice, but his real genius was a political strategy designed to bind the nation together and reduce the concept of sectionalism. In arguing for the Compromise of 1850, Clay stated, I know no South, no North, no East, no West, to which I owe my allegiance. Could the Civil War have been avoided if he had been elected president in 1844? This is one of the intriguing what ifs in this richly detailed book. As Farris points out, the losers of national campaigns often had more foresight than the winners, and being ahead of the times sometimes contributed to their defeat. Even a failed presidential campaign can trigger changes. For example, new political alignments form and barriers are broken down, allowing more groups -- from Catholics to women -to participate. This is why historians find even unsuccessful campaigns so intriguing.

But now its a breeze since I learned to do these two things: One, keep plastic wrap in the freezer. It unrolls evenly, not one side or the other. Two, use a serrated knife to cut it instead of relying on the metal strip down the side of the box. You lay it out on the counter, and just run the knife down the edge you want to cut. Works like magic, and its no longer frustrating. -- G.S. in Georgia

FLASHBACK - By Mick Harper 1. Which Jo Stafford hit from the 1950s netted her a No. 1 slot on charts in both the U.S. and U.K.? 2. Who is Andrew Loog Oldham? 3. Name the group that had a Top 10 hit with Livin Thing, and give the decade. 4. Which group released Day After Day, a song covered by Rod Stewart 35 years later? 5. What was Lou Reeds first solo release? What was the name of the band he left? 6. Which girl group had a hit with Eternal Flame, and when? Answers: 1. You Belong to Me, in 1952. The song was originally written as Hurry Home to Me; 2. Oldham was the Rolling Stones manager from 1963 to 1967. Although only 19, he had the brilliant idea of keeping custody of the master tapes and leasing them out for bigger profits; 3. Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) in 1976. 4. Badfinger, in 1971. The single from their Straight Up album and went to No. 4; 5. Walk on the Wild Side, in 1971, was Reeds first solo single after leaving The Velvet Underground; 6. The Bangles, in 1989. The song was No. 2 for the year, behind Madonnas Like a Prayer.

Have you noticed? You know how your car or truck gets dirty in the winter? The weather isnt so warm so you dont feel like washing it yourself. And much of the time the car wash is closed because of freezing temperatures. Its easy to slowly grow accustomed to the dirty appearance of your vehicle. Thats what happened to me recently. I just really didnt see the dirt on my car... ...until my wife cleaned up and washed her vehicle one unusually warm day. So theres her sparkling clean vehicle in the garage next to my dirty car and all of a sudden, I noticed the layers of road grime behind my tires, the catpaw prints, and the smudged windows. Life is a lot like my experience with my vehicles. When youre with others who arent making a positive life, you dont notice. But just as soon as youre with some people who are enjoying making a positive life, you notice that youre not. Conceive your positive life with people who listen to life today and enjoy the good life! A public service message brought to you by

Q: I am trying to find some information about two bronze plates that I have. Both are stamped The Henry Bonnard Bronze Company, NY and they depict what seem to be a war victory and a celestial scene. Id like to contact someone who can give me information regarding their significance and estimated value. -- Barry, via email A: Henry Bonnard and his factory produced important medal castings during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For example, the foundry was commissioned to do decorative work at the Pennsylvania capitol. One of the most notable workers at the foundry was Frederic Remington, whose casts from the company are highly valuable and collectible. MIR Appraisal Services can help you determine a value for your bronze plates. You should expect to pay for this service. The contact information is 307 North Michigan Ave., Suite 308, Chicago, IL 6 0 6 0 1 ; appraisers@MIRgallery.com; and 312-814-8510. *** Q: I have a working Webcor tape recorder with two large spools for rewinding the tape. Is there any value to this item? -- Bill, Amherst, N.H. A: Without knowing the model number, it is a little difficult to give you an exact answer, but let me provide you with my best guess. I checked with several shops that specialize in vintage electronic equipment, and I found a Webcor that I think might be similar to the one you have -- a 1952 Webcor two-track, two-speed reel-to-reel model with four heads and tube amp. It is in working order and priced at $50, which I think accurately reflects the current market. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Officers are as follows: President: Ryan Davis; Vice President: Isaac Greenman; Secretary: Stephanie McFall; Treasurer: Christina Peet; News Reporter: John Post; Game Leader: Luke Greenman. The club discussed different projects and community service they would be doing. There will be a mandatory livestock meeting for clubs in McKean County on Feb. 12th at 2pm at the Lloyd Burkhouse Auction House located on South Kendall Avenue in Bradford, PA. There were two guests: Kelly Davis and Marcia Lamar. The club meeting was led by Kim Tanner. Motion was made by Luke Greenman to adjourn the meeting and was seconded by John Post. fb THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Getting the Most From Compost Q: I just have a patio garden for my city apartment, but this fall I was able to start saving kitchen compost, which I transfer weekly to a large plastic laundry tub on the patio. The large tub is the problem -- water is seeping up around the dirt, and of course the water has an odor. A friend of mine said the pH balance is off. How can I stop this from occurring? - Jane in New Jersey A: What you need to do right away is turn the compost pile -meaning, take a shovel, spade or stick and stir the compost, remixing everything. The compost in the tub has compacted, so instead of actually composting (breaking down solids) its putrefying. Turning the compost will reintroduce air into the pile and help restart the process. If theres a lot of extra water after turning, pour off some, but not all of it. Theres also the possibility that rain or snowmelt got into the tub. If you dont want to punch drain holes in the bottom of the tub (most apartment managers frown on compost water stains on their patios) you should loosely cover the tub with a tarp so that air gets in but water does not. From here forward, monitor your compost regularly and turn it every week. Also keep an eye on what youre putting into the kitchen compost. Under no circumstances should you put in meat scraps; this will attract flies and result in maggots. Keep a roughly 50/50 ratio of carbon-rich to nitrogen-rich ingredients. Carbon-rich ingredients include anything brown, such as sawdust, dead leaves, paper or straw; nitrogen-rich ingredients include anything green such as greens and vegetables. You can also add crumbled eggshells (calcium) and occasionally sprinkle wood ashes from the fireplace into the pile. When the danger of hard frost is past, add a handful of live earthworms to the freshly turned pile. Theyll help aerate and break down the pile into rich compost. If you want to learn more about composting, primalseeds.org has published detailed instructions on building a keeping a healthy compost pile. HOME TIP: Keep compost piles in a far corner of the yard or as far from a homes exterior walls as possible to prevent pests from entering your home. Send your questions or tips to ask@thisisahammer.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Imagine putting all this money in your pocket and it just takes a short six minute phone call to make it happen. Let me ask you a question: What are you doing in the next six minutes that can put $400, $600, $800 or more in your familys checkbook? Do yourself and your family a huge favor by calling Williams Agency now. Listen, it doesnt even matter if youve renewed your auto policy yesterday with someone else. Williams Agency will handle all the paperwork cancelling your old policy and switching you over to your new one. Our clients love saving money in these tough times, but they also know that if there is ever a problem which needs to be taken care of were close by, here in Bradford, and not a call center on the other side of the world. Heres what a few of our clients, your neighbors have to say about us: I saw the article and had to see for myself. What Dans saying is true, we ended up saving $843.00 a year on our auto and home insurance - M. Wilber, Smethport, PA The Williams Agency saved me over $800 a year on my auto insurance. The staff is very friendly and always willing to help. Thank you Dan and staff. - R. Scutt, Smethport, PA I feel that Dan Williams went far beyond what you would expect from an insurance agent. Plus he saved us close to $1000 on premiums with more coverage that cannot be beat. - S. Howard, Port Allegany, PA

KIDS GLOVES While talking to parents of younger children, the topic of wet/ misplaced gloves came up. I shared this tip with them. Every year, I purchased ten pairs of all one color stretch gloves. Each one of these gloves fit on either hand. The key is buying in all one color. I would put two pairs of gloves on my daughter to go out and play. When those gloves got wet, she would come in and put on more gloves. As the season went on and gloves were lost or damaged, she never ran out as there were always enough gloves to replace those lost or in disrepair. -Roxanne

TWIN TIER CHRISTIAN RIDERS MEETING Local Chapter of Christian Motorcyclists Association- 2nd Saturday of the month, 9am at Foxs Pizza, Eldred, Pa. Weather permitting, ride to follow. All visitors welcome! tffb STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver The award for the most needless war in history could very well go to Paraguay, whose president, Francisco Solano Lopez, believed himself to be an excellent tactician. He was a great admirer of Napoleon Bonaparte and wished to emulate the French emperor, but he had no wars to fight. To remedy the situation, in 1864 Lopez declared war on all three of his neighboring countries, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil. His tactical abilities seem to have been of little use, however; it is estimated that 90 percent of Paraguays male population was killed during the course of the war.

MOMENTS IN TIME: The History Channel On Feb. 4, 1922, the Ford Motor Company acquires the failing luxury automaker Lincoln Motor Company for $8 million. Ford's son Edsel eventually helped to convince his father to drop his famous rule: "You can have any color, as long as it's black." On Feb. 5, 1937, President Franklin Roosevelt announces a controversial plan to expand the Supreme Court to as many as 15 judges. Critics charged that Roosevelt was trying to neutralize Supreme Court justices hostile to his New Deal. By 1942, all but two of the justices were his appointees. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE KITCHEN DIVA: By Angela Shelf Medearis Low Carb, High Risk? THAI CHICKEN AND MANGO STIR FRY This recipe uses fish sauce to add a burst of flavor to the dish. Fish sauce is a popular condiment in Southeast Asia. It's made from salted, fermented fish that is pressed to release the accumulated juices, which are bottled and sold as Fish Sauce. 1 bunch green onions, cut into 1-inch pieces 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil, preferably Thai 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint 1 lime, cut into 6 wedges (optional) 1/2 cup cooked whole-wheat pasta or 1/2 cup brown rice (optional) 1. Combine 2 tablespoons of the fish sauce and lime juice, cornstarch and brown sugar to taste in a small bowl. Set aside. 2. Heat 2 teaspoons oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat. Add chicken and 1 teaspoon of the fish sauce and the crushed red pepper; cook, stirring, until just cooked through, 5 to 7 minutes. Transfer to a plate and set aside. 3. Add the remaining 2 teaspoons oil, garlic and ginger to the pan. Cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 15 seconds. Add broccoli and water; cook, stirring, until beginning to soften, about 2 minutes. Add the mangoes, bell pepper and green onions; cook, stirring, for 1 minute. 4. Add the reserved sauce and chicken; cook, stirring, until the sauce is thickened and the chicken is heated through, about 1 minute. Stir in cilantro, basil and mint. Sell youll make money! Buy PAWS CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Dachshunds Odd Behavior DEAR PAWS CORNER: When we give my miniature Dachshund, Peg, a chew treat, she takes it and walks all over the house crying. She will stop and bury it in different places, under a blanket or behind things, then pull it right back out and continue the process again and again for a while before she finally settles down and begins chewing it. We were wondering what is going on in her head that results in this behavior. -- Curious Doxie Mom DEAR DOXY MOM: Pegs behavior has all the earmarks of instinctive behaviors applied to a specific item (the chew treat). Dachshunds are notorious diggers --its part of what they were originally bred for, as working dogs that would root out vermin like moles. So its not too surprising that she does this with her chew toys. The crying seems like a way of announcing possession, like hey, this is mine, I got it, check it out! rather than distress. If the behavior happens only at treat time and doesnt bother you or harm the furniture, its up to you whether to let it continue. However, it sounds like Peg needs more stimulation in her life. Try playing games where you bury a toy (cover it with a pillow, say) and have her find it. You can even go so far as to build a sandbox out back where she can bury and dig up toys during play times, under your supervision. Dont let her dig in other parts of the yard, though; if she starts that up, distract her and give her something else to do (like teaching basic obedience commands) or bring her back to the sandbox to dig. Forum Director SUNY Distinguished Professor Joe Flynn notes this event epitomizes the goals of the Forum which focus on topics which require careful inquiry from a variety of academic disciplines. Scientists, religious scholars, and historians have long debated the legitimacy of the claim that the Shroud is the actual burial cloth of the historical Jesus of Nazareth http://www.shroud.com/ The still-evolving scientific and historical records are sometimes difficult to disentangle from the swirl of attention brought to the artifact by millions of people and numerous organizations who embrace and promote its authenticity. Pyes interest in the Shroud began in 2010 when it was last displayed in Turin, Italy. Then a visiting professor at the University of Parma, he was asked by documentary film makers working for the National Geographical Society about the possible role glass might have played in creating the image in the artifact. Pyes presentation will recap the 2010 display and review the mixed history surrounding the Shroud. A lively public discussion will follow. Pye is an internationally renowned educator, researcher, and scholar of glass science and engineering. Most recently he received the Presidents Award from the International Commission on Glass and Distinguished Life Membership in the American Ceramic Society. An aspiring stained glass artist, he currently also serves as CEO, Empire State Glassworks LLC, and editor of the International Journal of Applied Glass Science. Buying a home is the single most valuable investment most families make, and home ownership offers tax breaks that make it the foundation for your overall tax planning. The tax law provides numerous incentives to home ownership, including the following: Buying, rather than renting, replaces nondeductible rent with deductible mortgage interest. For a limited time, qualified mortgage insurance premiums may be treated as deductible mortgage interest. Taxpayers can deduct an unlimited amount of property tax they pay on any number of residences. Homeowners can exclude up to $250,000 of gain ($500,000 for married couples filing jointly and certain surviving spouses) from taxable income when they sell. Energy credits are available for certain improvements to a residence. A temporary provision excludes the discharge of qualified principal residence indebtedness from gross income. Employee Business Expenses

Now may be a good time to evaluate the expenses you incur as an employee in connection with your work. While your employer may be reimbursing you for some of these expenses, there may be others for which you are bearing the cost yet not utilizing the tax benefit. Through proper substantiation, it is possible that you may be able to obtain greater reimbursement from your employer. Alternatively, you may be entitled to deduct such expenses as miscellaneous itemized deductions. In order to be reimbursed and/or deducted, trade or business expenses must be ordinary, necessary, and reasonable. They also must be properly substantiated. Examples of qualifying expenses include:

Travel, transportation, meal, or entertainment expenses Safety equipment, small tools, or supplies Uniforms required by your employer that are not suitable for everyday wear Required protective clothing Dues to professional organizations Subscriptions to professional journals Certain job hunting expenses Certain expenses for the business use of your home Computer costs Work-related educational expenses You may also benefit from a review of the business expenses related to the use of your home. If you qualify for the home office deduction, you may be able to deduct part of your homes normal operating expenses, such as utilities and insurance. The taxsavings opportunities

available to you are dependent not only on the type of work you do at home, but where in your home you perform it. The rules for deducting these expenses, as well as substantiating your deduction, vary according to the type of expense involved. It is important to retain all records and receipts that document the time, place, and business purpose of each expense. Five Financial Resolutions For The New Year

Its the start of a new year and we all know what that means: Time to make some resolutions. Well confidently pronounce our vow to shape up, eat right, save more money and cut out the excesses so we can be a better version of ourselves in 2012. Alas, best intentions aside, were all prone to the resolution slide - that gradual decline in dedication which creeps in as the year wears on. (For evidence, compare traffic levels at the gym on January 2 and February 2). Fortunately, from a financial perspective, there are easy steps you can make to help get your house in order. These require little time commitment, so no excuses. 1. Stop paying ATM fees. Withdrawing from an ATM outside your banks network commonly results in a fee of a few dollars. If your own bank tacks on a surcharge for going out of network (many do) you could be looking at an overall cost of four dollars

or more per transaction. If you make two such transactions per week, youre shelling out $416 over the course of a year just to retrieve your own money. A better option is to work with a national bank that has a large network conveniently located ATMs or with local bank or credit union that has formed alliances to grant you no-charge ATM usage. 2. Dont overpay your taxes. That rebate check you got from the IRS last spring was like free money, right? Wrong. Its actually reflective of the fact that you overpaid your taxes throughout the year, in essence giving the government an interest-free loan. Dont make the same mistake again. Work with a qualified tax professional to adjust your withholdings so you receive only a small refund on your taxes. That way, throughout the year, you can put your money to better use through investments that offer compounding and greater returns over time. 3. Look for package deals. Get an estimate on the cost of consolidating your home phone, internet access and long distance, cell phone plans

with one provider. Do the same with insurance; look for a carrier who will reward you for bundling your car, life and home insurance policies with them. Do the math to make sure youre getting a good deal in exchange for your loyalty. 4. Check your credit. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you are entitled to one free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit reporting companies - Experian, Equifax and TransUnion - every 12 months. Use their online tools to keep an eye on your credit score and report any errors. 5. Seek help. A qualified financial advisor can help you create or update a personalized financial plan that includes reviewing your insurance policies, banking r e l a t i o n s h i p s , investments, loans and budget to help you find everyday savings that could prove valuable.

NOW IS THE TIME

TO SCHEDULE YOUR PORTFOLIO REVIEW.
When you stop to think about whats happened in the past year, its easy to realize how quickly things can change. This is an ideal time to discuss how the market may have impacted your financial goals. Then we can help you decide if you should revise your investments. And even if you dont need to make changes, its still important to evaluate your investment strategy and help ensure its still on track with your goals.

Moving and Job Hunting Expenses

Individual taxpayers seeking new jobs may incur a variety of expenses, including costs directly associated with moving to a new job location or those specifically related to the job search. Many of these expenses are deductible, but the rules are strict, and expenses must be carefully documented and substantiated. You may be able to take advantage of these deductions, if you plan carefully. Any moving expenses you may incur, including expenses of traveling to the new location and transporting household goods and personal effects, are deductible so long as you meet certain requirements relating to when you begin work at the new position and how far the new job is from the old job and your old residence. These expenses are deductible even if you are seeking employment for the first time or in a completely new field. Also, qualified moving expenses reimbursed

or paid by your employer are considered nontaxable fringe benefits. You also may be able to deduct the expenses you incur in searching for a new job, including the costs of a headhunter or employment service, and the expense of preparing your resume. These expenses are deductible so long as the job being sought is in the same line of work as the old job, even if you are unemployed at the time of the job search. Further, the job search does not have to be successful in order to qualify

for the deduction. However, job hunting expenses for a first job, or related to changing to a new career, are not deductible. These are just a few examples; there are many more tax issues that you should consider. DOLLARS AND SENSE By David Uffington Learn How to Make a Fresh Start Virtually no one has made it unscathed through our years-long financial meltdown. Whether youre still struggling mightily or youve begun to see the light at the end of the tunnel, chances are one of your questions is: What do I do next? A new book likely has answers for you: The Wall Street Journal Guide to Starting Fresh: How to Leave Financial Hardships Behind and Take Control of Your Financial Life by Karen Blumenthal. Starting Fresh is a musthave. It sets its sights on those whove lost jobs or homes, or suffered from the effects of a health crisis, death of a spouse, divorce and more. No matter where you are in life and no matter your income level, youll find steps on how to adapt and adjust to your new circumstances. Blumenthal sets the tone for dealing with your current reality on the very first page: Decide that you wont make any big financial decisions right away ... youll make better choices if you step back, reflect, assess and get your bearings. One of the very first slowstart steps shell have you do is to take an inventory of all your assets and liabilities. For example, what is your car worth and how much do you still owe on it? What, exactly, do you owe on credit cards? Medical bills? Are there any valuables in a safe deposit box? Do any of your insurance policies have a cash value? Next youll learn how to: --Repair your credit. --Determine whether your housing is actually affordable. (Should you move or stay?) If you own your home, what is it worth? (Check Zillow.com online.) Do you qualify for a modification program? --Adjust your debts to your new situation. --Assess your healthcoverage plans. --Develop a sustainable plan for long-term financial health. --Readjust your budget to your current reality. And if theres a miracle and you come into a large sum of money -- perhaps from an insurance policy, employment severance payout or divorce settlement -- Blumenthal will tell you how to manage that as well. Dont miss the section on Internet links covering a wide variety of help topics. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

It also stars James Franco as Oscar Diggs (who becomes the Wizard); The Good Gardener Oscar winner Rachel Weisz (recently wed to the current James Bond, Daniel Craig); Mila Kunis of That 70s Show and Friends With Benefits; and Scrubs star Zach Graff. The budget for the film is $200 million, a far cry from the $2.7 million it cost MGM to make the original. The Wizard of Oz was considered a flop in its initial release, taking in only $3 million at the box office. A re-release shortly after brought in $1.5 million, starting it on its Yellow Brick Road to profit. In 1956, CBS paid a whopping $225,000 for its first TV airing, watched by 44 million people. CBS showed it once a year for the next 20 years. In l983, a reissue of the film made $6 million at the box office, prompting MGM to demand $13 million from CBS to air it that year. on two Baum books, The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz, had a budget of $25 million and only took in $11,137,801. The charming 14-year-old Fairuza Balk (later to star opposite Marlon Brando in the l996 film The Island of Dr. Moreau), was Dorothy. Piper Laurie, Oscar nominated for The Hustler (61), Carrie (76) and Children of a Lesser God (86), was Auntie Em. Nicol Williamson of Excalibur (81), The Exorcist III (89) and Spawn (97); and Upstairs, Downstairs star Jean Marsh rounded out the cast. Parents felt it was too dark and scary for tots and didnt take their children to see it. Maybe Disney will get it right THIS time. No one is left from the Disney of l985. We wont know how it turns out until March 8, 2013. Michelle Williams has already filmed Take This Waltz with Seth Rogan and Sarah Silverman. Its a bittersweet but heart-wrenching story about a woman struggling to choose between two different types of love. Maybe they could use the song Torn Between Two Lovers or the theme from A Man and a Woman! (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

SENIOR NEWS LINE: by Matilda Charles Your Family's Health History When it comes to leaving something for the next generations, there's something even more valuable than albums with carefully identified photos -- and that is your family's health history. The U.S. surgeon general has created the "My Family Health Portrait," an online tool that helps organize the specifics of your family's health. The potential benefits to the next generations are big. There are certain diseases that can run in the family, like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. The risk for high blood pressure can show up through the generations. By knowing what diseases are common in the family, the generations that follow will be able to guard against diseases that might have a hereditary basis. Their doctors will be able to assess which diagnostic and screening tests to run at various times based on family history. If you'd like to create your own family health file, go online to https:/ /familyhistory.hhs.gov/ to access the online tool. You'll start with baseline questions like your age, gender, whether you were born a twin,

and your height and weight. You'll move into the section on diseases or conditions you have or have had in the past. Then it gets a bit tricky when you have to list your relatives. It's set up like a family tree: You start with your mother and father, if possible, and what you know about their health. Ideally, you can gather information for a total of three generations. At the end you can save the file and update it later as you gather more information, or print out what you have and share it with your family. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc. PAW'S CORNER: By Sam Mazzotta Dog Hates Bathtub DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My German shepherd, "Silky," is 10 years old and has developed hip dysplasia, which makes her pretty uncomfortable. She avoids slippery floors and she hates the tub, but I need to give her a bath. Any way I can do this better to keep her comfortable? -- Jack T., Oklahoma City DEAR JACK: There are a few ways to help Silky stay comfortable

while being bathed. First, try placing a large, wet towel in the tub that she can stand on to gain traction. Lift her into the high-sided tub rather than make her jump in. Shepherds are large dogs, so if need be, work with a second person and tandem lift her, with one of you cradling under her chest and the other cradling her midsection and then tucking the other arm between her back legs and supporting her belly. A step-in shower is an even better option, if you have one. Again, put down a wet towel so that she feels secure standing or sitting. In warm weather, you could set up an inflatable kiddie pool and fill it with warm water. This gives big dogs enough room to sit or even lie down during their bath, and they can just walk into it over the low sides. During the bath itself it's important to work fast. Keep Silky's collar and leash on so you can hold her still as you wet her down (either with warm water scooped in a cup or using a sprayer attachment), add soap (only soap formulated for use on dogs), then rinse. Talk soothingly through the whole process. Once complete, lift her out of the tub onto a nonslip rug and towel-dry her fur, then give her lots of praise and a treat. Dear Fine Patriots: This is our 35th and Final Campaign for Letters From Home. We are asking you to collect cards and letters of support for our campaign entitled Shower them with Thanks! All cards and letters have a deadline of April 1, 2012 so we can assemble them at the Letter Stuffing Party on April 22, 2012. We would also like Get Well Cards for our Hospitalized Heroes in Landstuhl, Germany. Please remember: No glitter. We are not asking for you to collect treats for the military for this mailing as we have enough funds to provide this item. Shower Them With Thanks will mail out on April 22, 2012. All military addresses must be in by midnight on April 1, 2012 with no exceptions. Our Thanksgiving / Christmas campaign Thank You From America 2011 was mailed on November 22, 2011 with 27,782 cards to 2,414 military men and women all over the world, and also included were 1500 extra goodie bags to share with others. In addition, 100 care packages were sent to our wounded in Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany. Letters From Home was started in May 2003 and will retire on April 22, 2012. We are proud of all the people who have made this program so successful. As we take our final bow, please know you have made the difference in morale of over 70,000 military with your love and support. The Elk County Court House Annex building in Ridgway, Pennsylvania has been chosen to showcase the programs memorabilia. We couldnt be more proud to display the program there for all to see.

Stats: May 2003 - Nov. 2011: 34 campaigns - 661,044 cards - 72,626 military receiving a letter from home! Priceless! Dear Letters From Home: We received your box you recently sent and I would like to say that I am truly touched by your generosity. The cards will provide my soldiers with the knowledge that folks back home care for them, helping to raise their morale. As a leader, I truly appreciate it. Thank you so much for everything you do in support of deployed troops. Your words and actions are truly appreciated and reflect well upon your organization and all that America represents. Warhorse! -Marc Levitt CPT, SC Squadron S6 Community support for our military: www.ourmilitary.mil This is the Dept. of Defense at the Pentagon web site where you can find other patriotic web sites supporting our military. After we retire the program in April 2012, feel free to check them out and continue to support our military. f

CELEBRITY EXTRA By Cindy Elavsky Q: I read in an interview with James Van Der Beek that he was going to be in a new comedy this year, but I havent seen anything about it. I know hes in Franklin and Bash, but I dont think thats what hes talking about. Can you help? -- Violet F., Harrisburg, Pa. A: James was referring to his midseason comedy called Dont Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, in which he plays a sort of version of himself. The series debuts after comedy powerhouse Modern Family on April 11 on ABC. The show is about a female odd couple who live together in New York City, with James portraying the best friend of Chloe, the mean-girl roommate. Ive seen the pilot and it is very funny, and I love that James is able to parody himself in a non-self-conscious way, and that he isnt afraid to bring up Dawsons Creek. Q: Could you please tell me if Against the Wall will be returning? -Kathleen E., via e-mail A: Despite positive reviews by New York Daily News, Los Angeles Times and The Hollywood Reporter, Lifetimes cop-drama Against the Wall wasnt able to hold enough of its lead-in audience from Drop Dead Diva each week, and its ratings slipped from a meager 1.78 million viewers at its premiere to 1.47 million by its season finale. Lifetime opted not to renew the show for a second season.
