Expanding employment opportunit ies and increasing hours of employment per week have also been noted amongst successful borrower households in several countries. Some o f the socialchanges in Grameen Bank villages impact posit ively on the communit y as a whole for examplet he increased visibilit y and mobilit y of women. One study found that a significant change inhousehold and communit y status could be derived by women who maint ained control of theirloans. Women reported a direct correlat ion between having money and increased status andrecognit ion resourceful women using the loans to empower themselves

Targeting microcredit to successful entrepreneurial poor may increase the disparity between thosewith access to loans and those more vulnerable. There is a notable lack of research on increasedrelative poverty and its impact on poorer and more marginalised groups within communities. ACTIVITY FOUR R e a d t h e fo l l o w i n g q u o t e : In a context such as Bangladesh, men retain by far the greater balance of sociocultural power. The small gains which women might make part icipat ing indevelopment programmes cannot be protected from male control, unless mensattitudes change or men perceive a tangible benefit for themselves. This couldbe achieved through intensive qualitat ive invest ment in changing menspercept ions of womens worth which is often beyond the capacit y orcommit ment of development programmes or through ensuring that mensaccess to resources is not constrained in proportion to womens increasingaccess, in an apparent ly zero sum manner. Ideally the two should go together. 7 W h a t k e y i s s u e s a r e r a i s e d i n t h i s q u o t e ?
