YORK Refrigeration's Guidelines on Treatment of Water for Heat Exchangers

looking in YORK Refrigeration's Heat Exchangers Manual . When it is a question of water treatment of cooling tower water, please see the enclosed copy of the standard VDI-3803, which states a number of recommended max. values for pH value, conductivity, mineral content, etc. However, in case the supplier of the water treatment plant has some other and stricter max. values, these should be followed. If chemical cleaning of the heat exchangers is to be carried out, we recommend you to use products from the same supplier who delivered the water treatment plant. The purpose of the above is to ensure that the two products harmonise with each other. Stainless Steel Heat Exchangers If the heat exchanger is made of stainless steel, it is of the utmost importance that the values for max./min. temperature and CL content never exceed the limits in YORK Refrigeration's Heat Exchangers Manual, unless the water treatment supplier assumes YORK Refrigeration's product warranty.

To ensure that heat exchangers delivered by YORK Refrigeration are protected in the best possible way against corrosion and fouling, YORK Refrigeration makes the following requirement as regards water treatment. The water treatment must ensure that heat exchangers are protected against corrosion during their lifetime. Water treatment Water treatment is not one of YORK Refrigeration's business areas. Therefore, the full responsibility for correct water treatment is a matter between the owner of the heat exchangers and the chosen water treatment supplier. We therefore recommend you to find a supplier who is widely experienced in the field of water treatment. To be able to meet the requirement of lifetime protection, it is necessary to know which materials the water is in contact with in the plant (heat exchangers, pipes, valves, etc). This information for the heat exchanger can be obtained by contacting YORK Refrigeration or

1) Compound system (mixed installation). 2) Stabilisation with organic phosphate plus dispersing agent. Depending on the stabilising effect, higher concentrations are also possible. 3) When the bacteric colonies exceed approx. 100,000/ml, a biocide must be used (discontinuous addition) 4) When using condition chemicals, the optimum pH value may be outside the indicated area. 5) When using inhibitors, higher concentrations are permitted in a few cases (in case of a higher concentration it is necessary to monitor the corrosion rate). The limiting values for discharge of wastewater and environmental protection must be observed. 6) German hardness ~ 1H = 10 mg CaO per liter water (~ 1.25 English hardness, ~ 1.04 American hardness).
