Innovation in Faade Technology

Telling faades feature a ventilated cavity to create condensation-free, thermally efficient cladding to suit the demands of modern architecture and refurbishment.

Introduction Telling Architectural are distributors of a range of rainscreen faades produced by leading European manufacturers and provide a complete technical service supported by an in-house design department. The company's systems are produced in purpose-made facilities in Germany, Spain and Italy and are backed by laboratory testing and extensive quality control procedures. Installation is by trained and approved contractors and the systems can be incorporated in off-site unitised walling panels by companies holding the requisite expertise. Applications The company's faades are suitable for new build and refurbishment. The systems may be mounted on blockwork, composite panels and concrete as well as lightweight steel and timber walling. The faades may be used on buildings up to 100 m in height. Authority All systems have been tested as a minimum to comply with CWCT standards for weathering, airtightness and impact at the UK Taylor Woodrow laboratories. A BBA certificate is held by Argeton Terracotta and the Alsecco Airtec systems have gained the equivalent DiBT approval. DESCRIPTION The systems offer an extensive range of smooth, textural, polished and reflective finishes created from minerals of a sustainable source. They are mechanically fixed with stainless steel and aluminium fasteners to an aluminium substructure. A thermal separator prevents bridging between the cleat and the buildings structure. A minimum cavity of 30 mm is provided between the outer face of the wall or insulant and the inner face of the faade lining. Thermal insulation, when required, is mechanically secured to the buildings outer surface and a collaboration has been established with Pittsburgh Corning to develop the use of Foamglas , a 66% recycled cellular glass insulation slab. Fire barriers may be inserted at storey heights provided ventilation of the cavity is not inhibited. The faades range includes extruded clay tiles, ceramic or porcelain plates and panels of aerated clay concrete faced with laminated stone or glass. They may be cut on-site with a diamond tipped Registered Trademark

wet cut saw but are generally manufactured to a predetermined module. Prefabricated corner sections are available to enhance the monolithic aesthetic of the faades. Aluminium sections can be prepared as window pods, for external corners and storey height feature bands. Composition, manufacture The faades are manufactured in state of the art kilns to maximise the efficiency of firing and minimise the embodied energy expended in production. The Alsecco Airtec stone range uses 8 - 12 mm veneers of stone thereby overcoming stones greatest disadvantage - its weight. Hydraulic lime mortars are fired at 900C and are preferable to cement as when they set, they regain as much as 50% of the CO2 emissions produced in their creation. BREEAM ratings are being prepared for the company's rainscreen faades. Dimensions Extruded clay and ceramic tiles are supplied in standard grids up to 1500 mm (l) and 400 mm (h). Porcelain tiles are a maximum 1200 mm (l) and 600 mm (h). Optional heights are available from 150 mm in 25 mm increments. Airtec Stone and Glass panels can be manufactured in storey height panels up to 3200 mm x 1400 mm or in smaller units as selected. Corium brick rainscreens by Wienerberger have been added to our range for stack and stagger bond in UK standard sizes with a range of natural and glazed finishes. Photovoltaic panels can be prepared in sizes up to 3000 mm x 1200 mm with sizing selected to optimise the cell formats. The laminated glass can also be manufactured with metallic or fabric cores for solar shading. Weight The dry weight of the systems seldom exceed 50 kg/m2. Appearance Smooth and profiled clay tiles are available in 13 colours created with natural iron oxides and ochres and may be manufactured as engobe to enhance the weathering properties of the tile. Ceramics and porcelain faades are selected from an extensive range of colours and effects in glaze matt and riven textures. Alsecco Airtec stone is available in 25 standard origins as well as from selected sources. Airtec glass can be created in colours from the RAL range. Laminated glass photovoltaic panels can be translucent or vitrified coloured. The PV cells are available in five colours.

PERFORMANCE Weather The systems can withstand the most adverse of weather conditions. They satisfy 50 freeze/thaw cycles as required by DIN 52252: Part 1. Mechanics All systems have passed the CWCT test standards for impact. Fire All the faades are designed so as to comply with the relevant national building codes. Foamglas cellular glass insulation is non-combustible. Biological, pollution The non-porous nature of the tiles ensures high resistance to organic growth and airborne pollution. Heat The systems comply with the Part L regulations and excellent U-values are achievable to exceed the minimum requirements. Sound Typically, with steel walling as structural support, a 50 dB weighted average sound reduction is achieved. Durability Overall design life is expected to exceed 50 years. MAINTENANCE Faades are maintenance free and in the case of damage, individual tiles can be easily removed and replaced without disturbing surrounding panels. SUPPLY The company works with Taylor Maxwell nationally for distribution and sales via 15 regional offices. A collaboration agreement has been established with Alsecco UK for the Airtec range of products. SERVICES Services to specifiers include design of interfaces and technical advice, loading and thermal performance calculations, acoustic analysis of the through-wall construction and budget costings.
