BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE, PILANI INSTRUCTION DIVISION FIRST SEMESTER 2010-2011 Course Handout Part II Date:

03/08/2010 In addition to part -I (General Handout for all courses appended to the time table) this portion gives further specific details regarding the course. Course No. Course Title Instructor-in-charge Instructor : ME C392 : Advanced Mechanics of Solids and Kinematics : M. S. DASGUPTA : Arun K Jalan, Sai Jagan Mohan

1. Course Description: The course starts with generalized Hookes low and three dimensional stress strain relations. It includes detailed discussion of energy methods for solving indeterminate problems. Mechanics of asymmetrical bending, curved beams and thick cylinders are also discussed. A chapter on contact stress is also included. Under kinematics, velocity and acceleration diagrams, graphical and analytical methods of analysis, kinematics of cam & synthesis of cam profile and gear trains are included. 2. Scope and Objective of the Course: The first part deal with in-depth analysis of some advanced topics in Mechanics of Solids, beyond what is covered in the common course Mechanics of Solids ES C221. The second part deals with kinematics of simple mechanisms and motion generation, which lays foundation for further study in Dynamics and Vibration ME C442. 3. Text books:
