If a friend has overdosed on drugs or is extremely intoxicated...DON’T WAIT! Get the person to a
hospital as soon as possible. If you can, note what they have been drinking or have taken, and stay with
them at the hospital. If you cannot stay, pin a note to them with their name, address, and type and amount
of drug they took, and whether they had consumed alcohol.

LODGING
Psych Services provides a full scope of mental health services for children, adolescents and adults. Such
services include individual, family, group therapy, marriage counseling, psychological testing, court
evaluations, substance abuse evaluations, and school performance evaluations. Consultation services,
such as stress management, parent training and staff development are also available. Appointments are
usually available within 24-48 hours.
Voting
A person can register by mail or at the Roane County Clerk’s Office. To register you must be a US
citizen at least 17 years and be 18 on or before the next general election. You must be a resident of the
county to which you apply for registration. To register you must present valid identification such as a
birth certificate, a WV driver’s license, a DMV identification card, a US passport or a military service ID.

Head Start
This program is for families with preschool children, who meet income guidelines, or have a child who
has a disability. The child has to be 3 or 4 as of August 31 to be eligible. Head Start provides children
with activities to help them grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically. The children socialize
with others, solve problems, and have experiences that help them become self-confident. They also have
a chance to improve listening and speaking skills.

SPECIAL NEEDS
Parent/Educator Resource Center
The Parent / Educator Resource Center trains parents and educators in the skills needed by both parties to
create and implement working relationships. The center conducts training courses for educators and
parents and provides information, support and assistance regarding school and community resources to
enable parents to make informed decisions regarding their child’s education.
The education of the handicapped act requires parents and educators to share as equal partners in making
decisions regarding special education programs. An effective positive partnership occurs when all parties
in the relationship ... teachers, administrators, school support personnel and parents of the exceptional
students... meet with expectations of meaningful communication, mutual trust and respect.
Some of Our Common Functions & Responsibilities
Provide basic training for parents regarding special education and their role in the cooperative planning for
their child
Provide up-to-date information and resources for parents and professionals and serve as an initial
contact for parents new to the community
Assist parents in resolving concerns and to make decisions regarding their child’s health
education
Offer workshops and training experience on topics requested by parents
Answering questions related to needs for handicapped and gifted children, youth and adults

SUICIDE PREVENTION
Suicide is any self-inflicted act that ends in death. In the US 12 out of every 100,000 people will die from
suicide every year. If a person is depressed he/she is more likely to commit suicide than a content person.
Also people that are widowed, divorced, socially isolated, and someone who has experienced a recent
traumatic loss is more likely to commit suicide. Suicide usually happens in older adults. Women are
more likely to have unsuccessful attempt at suicide than men.
Suicide Warning Signs
A sudden decrease or increase in eating or sleeping habits
Depression
Withdrawal from friends, family and regular activities
Unexplained or unusual rebellion or disruptive behavior
Drug and/or alcohol use
Unusual neglect of personal appearance
Know the Warning Signs
Be a friend
Listen and let the person know you care
Try to convince the person to get help
Let a responsible adult know your concern
Get help from a minister, teacher, or professional
DO NOT leave the individual alone if an immediate threat is apparent
Radical personality change
Persistent boredom, difficulty concentrating, or remembering
Frequent complaints about physical symptoms, often related to emotions, such as stomachaches,
headaches, fatigue, etc....
Loss of interest in pleasurable activities
Violent actions, rebellious behavior or running away
Letters, notes, and journals about hopelessness/death
Giving verbal hints
Expressing suicidal thoughts, even in a joking manner
Putting affairs in order-for example giving away favorite possessions or throwing away important
belongings
Becoming suddenly cheerful after a period of depression
Keep these thoughts in mind:
OTHERS DO CARE - There are always people who are willing to help you work out your problems.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE - Nearly everyone thinks about committing suicide at one time or another.
THE CRISIS WILL PASS – This period in life is only temporary
DON’T BE EMBARRASSED - There’s no need to feel ashamed about what you’ve been thinking.
REMEMBER...
Suicide is a PERMANENT alternative
to a TEMPORARY problem.
It does not have to happen!!!!!
