Mud crab races, sandcastle competitions and fireworks are just some of the ways to celebrate Australia Day at councils free community events on Wednesday, January 26.
The day kicks off early with a free barbecue breakfast at 7.30am at Brennan Park on the Bongaree foreshore at Bribie Island. The Aussie Beach Party at Bribie continues with art and craft markets, live entertainment, a sandcastle competition, and amusement rides and culminates with a spectacular fireworks display at 7.15pm. Meanwhile, Strathpines Pine Rivers Park will host the Aussie Arvo from 3pm with pony rides, sack races, face painting and craft workshops, a Light Horse and Tent Pegging show, an animal farm and reptile shows among the activities planned. Onstage, Jon English, country pop outfit Jonahs Road and great local talent including Made in Australia and Celtic Fusion will perform until fireworks at 7.45pm.

RADF helps arts projects soar

The beautifully illustrated story of Talon the osprey chick is now on display to all Osprey House Environmental Centre visitors, thanks to the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).
The fund enabled Osprey House Environmental Centre to engage local artist Pip Grant-Taylor to work with centre volunteers on the story of Talons hatching and first flight. RADF grants can be used for a wide range of arts development activities including professional development; workshops; innovative arts, culture or heritage projects; concept development; creative industries development and cultural tourism initiatives. Applications for the next RADF funding round are now open and will close on 14 March, for projects starting after 30 May, 2011. There are no upper or lower limits on grant applications, but typically grants range between $250 to more than $15,000 per project and average about $5,000.

Soccer fields for Samford

Soccer fields and practice areas are taking shape at Samford parklands as the latest stage of the recreation areasd evelopmentis carried out.
A senior and a junior field, practice areas, lighting, irrigation, a car park, internal road, the upgrade of a dam and underground water storage are all part of the latest work which has been estimated at $4 million. Weather permitting, the new soccer fields are expected to be completed by June. Last year council completed a tennis and netball precinct at the parklands as part of its commitment to creating district-level sporting fields and recreational facilities at Samford. The work is being carried out following a master plan which was developed for the site in 2005.

Declutter this Summer

If a fresh clean start is on your New Years resolution list, then here are a few tips on how to dispose of clutter in a way that reduces its environmental impact.

Where can I take my rubbish?

1. Recycle
Glass, plastic bottles and containers, milk and juice containers made of liquid paperboard, paper, cardboard, aluminium and steel cans can all go into the yellowlidded recycling bin at home or at council waste facilities. Cardboard skip bins are located at all waste facilities. Metal products and e-waste like computers, old televisions, phones and printers can be recycled by delivering to the appropriate area at waste facilities.

There are four main waste facilities in Moreton Bay region open seven days a week between 7am and 6pm in summer. Each facility offers a range of options for waste disposal. However, some materials can only be disposed at selected sites. Check councils website

2. Reuse
Donate your usable but unwanted furniture, tools, appliances, building and outdoor materials and kitchen items to charities or drop them off at waste facilities for the Treasure Markets at Caboolture and Dakabin. That way theyll get a second lease on life.

3. Recover
Take your garden clippings and branches to the green waste area of your local waste facility so they can be turned into mulch. Drop off unusable timber furniture to the timber area to be chipped. Waste facilities will also take old gas bottles (limit of one per visit) and tyres (limit of two per visit) for recovery of metal and rubber. Unwanted concrete can be crushed and used for drainage and access roads at the waste facilities.

4. Responsibly dispose
Make sure items such as household chemicals and paint, oil, car and boat batteries and fluorescent globes are dropped off at the appropriate regulated or hazardous waste section at Dakabin, Caboolture, Bunya and Redcliffe waste facilities. If you want to get rid of materials containing asbestos or contaminated soils, phone council on 3205 0555 before disposal as regulations apply.

Welcome additions
From learning how to establish a website to hosting an exhibition, councils Food For Thought program will serve up a range of skills and hints to inspire the regions creative community in 2011.
The program, now in its fourth year, includes events, talks and workshops on topics that support and nurture local arts professionals. New to this years program are a TAFE-subsidised course on how to establish a creative business as well as workshops on writing media releases and how to sell craft online. Previous popular topics such as grant writing, establishing a website, exhibition skills and photographing artworks are also featured in the years activities. Most sessions are free, but all must be booked. The bookclubs, which are open to all, will be held in the Redcliffe Library Welcoming Place and focus on Indigenous Australian and Torres Strait Islander literature. The first childrens book club for ages eight and over will meet at 4pm on 10 February and the session will include storytelling, craft and a book to read and discuss. The first adult book club will meet at 6pm on 25 February and will include bush tucker tasting, readings and discussions. Moreton Bay Region Libraries Welcoming Places are library spaces of Indigenous focus, developed in partnership with local Indigenous community representatives and groups. Redcliffe-born actor and author William McInnes will launch Library Lovers Month with an author talk and wine and cheese night at Redcliffe Library at 7pm on 8 February. Crime writer Pat Noad will visit Deception Bay, Woodford, Caboolture and Burpengary Libraries during February to talk about her new book Destination Tribulation. Burpengary intersection upgrade

The intersection of Uhlmann and Buckley Roads at Burpengary is undergoing an upgrade to improve safety and provide for increasing volumes of traffic. The project, estimated at $3 million, will include adding traffic signals and new street lighting and also involves work to relocate electricity, phone lines and water services. Weather permitting, the intersection will be completed by the end of 2011.

Play games, learn up to six different sports or try your hand at tumbling and bouncing gymnastics in Moreton Bay region parks this January.
Moreton Bay Regional Councils Active Kids program offers free fun activities for toddlers and primary school children. January sessions are being held at Suttons Beach Park at Redcliffe, John Scott Park in Samford, Wamuran Sports Field, Morayfield Park Leisure Centre, Pebble Beach Common at Sandstone Point and Sweeney Reserve at Petrie. Experienced and qualified staff deliver the activities and there are separate sessions for supervised toddlers and primary school children. Participants are asked to wear enclosed

shoes, comfortable clothes and a hat, and to bring a bottle of water, sunscreen and something healthy to eat after the session.
