TEXAS WINS By Political Affairs Director, Amber Hastings While it is extremely unfortunate that the date of the Texas primary is still uncertain, there is a definitive silver lining for Texas college students. Instead of having the last date for registration in early February, that date will now be in early March, allowing chapters a full month longer to register students on their campuses. I know the uncertainty is driving everyone in Texas up the wall (Republicans and Democrats alike), but this is an unprecedented opportunity, and we should seize it. Instead of scrambling the last two weeks of January, our chapters can implement voter registration drives and educate students through Texas Wins! This extra opportunity is especially exciting for me. My brother, Brian, turns 18 on April 1st meaning that he will have the ability to vote in the primary. This is the kind of thing that makes me proud and excited for the future: my brother is by no means political, but he still wants to participate. I think that provided a positive and persistent political environment, most people would be propelled toward political participation. We've got to be there, and we must engage our peers. We have an extra month to make the implications of this situation resonate with our fellow students. This primary will not make or break the presidential election, which is where most of the attention lies. However, it is our chance to choose the best US Senate candidate, and the best House candidates. It is also the time where we select the strongest candidates for the Texas Legislature: this is where we can make the greatest difference. We have an opportunity to expose more students to their ability to make a difference. The most common reason people don't vote is because they feel they're being forced to choose between the lesser of two evils. By participating en masse in the more localized primaries, we can ensure that Texans are not forced to choose between the "lesser of who cares" in November. THE PROMESA PROJECT As December of 2011 came to its end, the Texas Democratic Party launched a bold and innovative project for college Democrats in a new approach to Latino outreach. The initial launch generated a great deal of buzz and raised enough money to be able to launch Phase Two, which consists of this Fellowship Program, paid media and a continued crescendo of the current social and earned media efforts. Given that Two-thirds of our states rapid population growth over the past decade has come from Latinos, That emerging demographic will eventually turn Texas Blue. But for our schools and families struggling under disastrous Republican policies, eventually isnt soon enough. Those accepted into the project will be brought to Austin for a weekend of trainings with travel/lodging/meals paid for by TDP. Fellows would be paid a stipend of $750 per semester disbursed in three payments. Upon acceptance into the program. Target Schools for the Promesa Project
