Remata Flashcard Help

Getting Started The Remata spreadsheet has four sheets. The main sheet is the Flashcard sheet. This is where you view and interact with flashcards.

The first thing to do is choose which Greek words you want to study. On the right of the Flashcard sheet are many cells used to select cards. For intermediate and advanced students you probably will usually use the Frequency Range rule. This rule chooses words based on the frequency a word is used in the New Testament. For example, to study all the words used at least 201 times and no more than 500 times, set the Frequency Range Low to 201 and the Frequency Range High to 500. Then push the Choose Cards button on the left. A message panel appears that tells you 41 cards were found. Push OK. Press Next Card to see the first card.

Beginner students studying Basics of Biblical Greek by William Mounce can select cards based on BBG chapters. To do this find the rule labeled Mounce BBG. Enter the beginning (low) and end (high) chapters you want to study. To study Chapter 4 words set both low and high to 4. You will see that 26 cards are found. Flashcards Sheet Viewing Card Data

The upper left hand corner of the Flashcards sheet is where card information is shown. Large yellow cells show the word, the lemma and the meaning. Below that the word type (part of speech), verb stem, frequency of use in the New Testament, difficulty, hint and card number are shown. Below the card data viewing area are several buttons that control card viewing. Choose Cards chooses words from the word list that match the card selection criteria. Push it when you have set the selection rules you want. There are also a couple of other times to press Choose Cards. After marking cards right or wrong you can push it to filter out cards that no longer match the difficulty rule (see below). Another time to push the Choose Cards button is to get a new random sort of the current card set when the Sort Type is Random (see below). Next Card shows the next card. Previous Card shows the previous card. Both buttons loop. This means that when you are on the last card and you push Next Card you will see the first card. Likewise when you are on the first card and push Previous Card you will see the last card. When you loop like this the program displays a message to let you know it happened, which helps you keep track of when you have gone through a card set.

Control Buttons

Show All shows all the data on the current card. You push it after you have taken you best try at an answer. After you push Show All the I'm Right and I'm Wrong buttons become available. Every card is initially assigned a difficult of 50. Pushing I'm Right decreases the this difficulty. Pushing I'm Wrong increases the difficulty. The new difficulty is stored on the Words sheet and so remains available for future use. Of course, if you close the spreadsheet program you must save the file to keep your changes.

The Edit Card button also becomes available after you push Show All. Edit Card takes you to the Words sheet on the row where the current word is. There you may manually edit the row any way you wish. Again, you must save to keep any changes you make.

When a word has a hint the Show Hint button becomes available. Remata comes with no hints. You may add your own hints by using the Edit Card button or by navigating to the Words sheet on your own. Add your hint in the Hint column. Card Selection Rules There are several rules that select cards. They are located in the lower right of the Flashcards sheet. All selection rules are taken together. For example, set the Frequency Range for 1000 to 20000 and Mounce BBG for 4 to 4. Then you will see 3 cards chosen those that are in BBG Chapter 4 and occur more than 1000 times in the New Testament. Another selection criterion is the User defined chapter. On the Words sheet you can set chapter numbers in the User Chapter column. The User defined chapter rule works on whatever numbers have been put in the User Chapter Column.

The Difficulty Range rule acts on word difficulty. All words start with a difficulty of 50. When you get a word right the difficulty is decreased. When you get a word wrong the difficulty is increased. Usually you will use this rule to filter out easier words that you no longer need to study. The Words sheet has a normal spreadsheet filter as part of its table. The Words in Current Filter row shows how many words are in the current filter on the Words sheet. When all the cards pass the filter this row will show 5393 words all the words on the Words sheet. If there is a filter in place you will see a total of less than 5393 in this row. Usually Remata ignores whatever filter is set on the Words sheet. To have Remata use the filter set Use Current Filter? to Yes. The final selection rule is by word type. To exclude certain word types set the types in the Types to Exlude row and the rows below. To only include certain types, change Include all Word Types to No. The Types to Exclude label changes to Types to Include Pick word types to include in the appropriate rows. Card Manipulation Options Below the card selection rules are rows that control how the selected cards are manipulated. The Sort Type row allows you to chose how the cards are sorted. Random sorts the cards in a different random order every time you push the Choose Cards button. Difficulty puts more difficult cards first. Frequency puts words used more frequently in the New Testament first. Greek sorts in Greek alphabetical order. Word Type sorts by word type. Leaving the field blank does no sort the cards are left in the same order as they are on the Words sheet. The Words sheet comes with the words in Greek alphabetical order, but you can change the order by performing your own sort on the words data table.

On the next row is a Display first: choice. With this row you can choose what you see when a card is first displayed. Word displays only the Greek word. Lexical displays all the Greek lexical data. Meaning displays the English meaning, which is useful when you want to see the English meaning first and try to remember the Greek. Learn new words mode? starts set to No. This is the normal mode where you display some of the flashcard and guess the rest. For example, you normally display the Greek word and try to remember the English meaning and perhaps the lexical data. You then use the Show All button to show all the information on the card. When you set Learn new words mode? to Yes all of the card information is displayed right away. Some people like to use this to get an overview of the cards when they are first learning. Later they use the normal mode (Learn new words mode? set to No) to test their knowledge. Normally the I'm Right and I'm Wrong buttons are disabled until you use the Show All button. The Always enable I'm right row allows you to have the I'm Right button on right away. This way you can mark cards right quickly when you are sure you know the answer and don't need to look at all the information.

Pushing the I'm Wrong button increases a word's difficulty. The If wrong, increase difficulty row sets how big a difficulty increase happens when the I'm Wrong button is pushed. Similarly pushing the I'm Right button decreases a word's difficulty and the If right, decrease difficulty by row determines how much to decrease difficulty on a right answer. Words Sheet The Words sheet contains the words used by Remata to build flashcards. You may edit it, but you should be careful not to destroy the data table structure, which would break the Remata code. You should not delete rows nor columns. Editing individual cells, sorting and filtering should all be OK and still allow Remata to work.

Most of the time you will not interact with the Words sheet directly. Normally you will change the difficulty with the I'm Right and I'm Wrong buttons as explained above. Sometimes you will want to edit the hint or user chapter. Usually you will use the Edit Card button to do this, although you can also navigate there manually. Once you are on the correct row edit the Hint or User Chapter column as desired. You can also edit word data if you see errors or the word meanings do not agree with what you are trying to learn.

Another possible task on the Words sheet is to choose words with the data filter. Normally the card selection rules on the Flashcards sheet should be sufficient. However, you can create any spreadsheet filter you like on the Words sheet and use it by setting Use Current Filter? to Yes. This is the help sheet. It gives help, as you can see. The program data sheet stores information about the Remata program. It also stores data used by the Remata program. You should not modify it. You really don't need to do anything with it. It does have program notes if you are really interested and want to look.
