3rd Annual Kids Hunt
TPWD Mission: To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to
provide hunting, fshing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present
and future generations.
Local game wardens, Morgan Inman, Justin Eddins, Bradley Smith and Landon Spacek not only
have the desire to fulfll this mission, they also strive to promote the outdoors with todays youth. They
went to some of the Ag teachers and coaches in our local area to try to get some names of students
that may not have ever had the opportunity to deer hunt. This would not only be for the experience
of deer hunting, it would be a kid friendly deer hunt and an all day campout in the woods with no
drugs, alcohol or outside distractions.
This year there were 10 kids that were able to enjoy this one on one experience. Michael Collins
from Buna, Chris Wells from Buna, Cameron Farr from Kirbyville, Breanna Whitten from Kirbyville,
Taylor Miller from Kirbyville, Brett Willis from Evadale, Dillon & Clinton Conner from Buna, Ty
Weaver from Brookeland and Berry Smith from Newton.
Saturday morning January 14, 2012, everyone met at Cairo Springs, an area north of Buna at
5:30 a.m. Not many kids are up at this time of the day, but these 10 kids were up and raring to go!
They split up with their guides and got on the stands about 6:00. The morning hunt gave up one deer.
Dillon Conner made a nice shot on a southeast Texas doe.
After the hunt everyone came back to the pavilion for lunch that was prepared by Game Warden
Bradley Smith and land owner Will Withers. There were lots of high fves for Dillon and several
conversations about what was seen or not seen. The food that was prepared outdoors was really a
treat, especially since everyone got up so early.
After lunch everyone went to a designated area where they were given the opportunity to learn how
to shoot skeet. This was not only about shooting the skeet, the game wardens also took the time to go
over hunter safety, the state laws and answer lots of questions!
Brett Willis was very excited and appreciative of this opportunity that was given to him. He lives
with his grandmother and had never even shot a gun before. There were several that had frst time
experiences, this was great and what this day was all about!
Everyone got with their guide and went back out for the evening hunt. Breanna Whitten from
Kirbyville got the lucky shot of the evening. She killed her frst ever deer with a 223 at 100 yards! Way
to go Breanna!
This great day in the outdoors would not have been possible without a lot of preparation and
donations.
Gander Mountain donated skeet & ammo, Brookshires in Kirbyville & Newton donated food for the
meal, Keelers in Buna donated ammunition, Pepsi, Jasper Quality Meats (across from Tractor Supply)
donated food for the meal and Cypress Creek Farms in Buna donated the corn.
In Texas, every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must
successfully complete a Hunter Education Training Course, or be accompanied* while hunting.
Minimum age of certication is 9 years of age.
Breanna Whitten from Kirbyville and her father Andy Authement proudly show
Breannas rst deer harvested.
Brett Willis from Evadale is learning how to shoot skeet with the help of local game warden,
Morgan Inman and land owner, Wyatt Withers. (N/P)
Taylor Miller from Kirbyville had never even red a rie until this special day!
She is being instructed by her Ag teacher, Marvin Kroft and game warden, Morgan Inman.

By Chris Jay, Public Relations and Social Media Manager, Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau
2012 bassmaster classic feld will include frst-ever collegiate angler
25 year-old andrew upshaw of hemphill, Texas
will be competitions frst college b.a.s.s. angler
The last time 25-year-old Andrew Upshaw of Hemphill, Texas
was in Shreveport-Bossier, Louisiana for the Bassmaster Classic,
he was working a booth at the outdoor expo that takes place
during the massive, three-day event. That was in 2009, and
Upshaw and his fshing partner, Ryan Watkins, both students at
Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas, were well on
their way to becoming one of the most accomplished collegiate
fshing teams in the U.S. Three years and a national collegiate
championship later, Upshaw is heading back to Shreveport-
Bossier for the 2012 Bassmaster Classic, which will take place
Feb. 24-26 on the Red River. This time around, he wont be
sneaking into parties to meet his favorite anglers; hell be
competing against them as the frst-ever College B.A.S.S. angler.
Upshaw says hes not intimidated by the competition,
though hes excited to be sharing the water with anglers who he
considers to be the best in the world.
These guys are the best in the world for a reason, Upshaw
said. But I really feel like I have a great chance to win it. That
may sound crazy, but thats how I approach every tournament:
I go to win.
The Bassmaster Classic is a three-day event that has been
called the Super Bowl of professional bass fshing. During the
2012 Bassmaster Classic, 49 anglers representing 22 states will
compete for the sports largest prize: $500,000 and the title of
Bassmaster Classic champion. In addition to exciting daily
launches and weigh-ins, fans will be treated to a free outdoor
expo sponsored by Dicks Sporting Goods. The expo, which
will be held at the Shreveport Convention Center, will feature
over 150 vendors, giveaways by B.A.S.S.s sponsors, fshing
seminars, angler appearances, and more.
For more information on the 2012 Bassmaster Classic,

Bossier during the event, or to request a Visitors Guide

By Todd Driscoll, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
Tournament Statistics
at Sam Rayburn Reservoir
Management of the largemouth bass fshery at Sam Rayburn Reservoir is a high priority of Texas
Parks and Wildlife Department and rightly so. Our angler surveys indicate that year after year,
70 - 80% of Sam Rayburn anglers target largemouth bass. Therefore, we frequently monitor the
largemouth bass population with our traditional sampling methods (electrofshing and angler creel
surveys) to ensure our current regulations and bass stockings are producing the highest quality
bass fshing possible. Over eight years ago I started using tournament results as a cost-effective way
to increase the amount of information to base management decisions, especially information from
larger bass (> 4 pounds).
Tournament results are obtained from organizations with data available via the Internet. To
prevent biased results from small tournaments, I only include those with > 50 individuals or teams.
Summary tournament variables include average bass weight, average total weights of 1st 3rd places,
percent of anglers with weights > 15 pounds, percent of anglers with limits, average big bass weight,
and average hours to catch a bass > 8 pounds. Below, I report data from 2007 - 2011 survey years, and
include a table for reference.
In 2010, approximately 8,000 bass were weighed in from 38 (9 individual and 29 team)
tournaments with > 50 participants at Sam Rayburn (big bass tournaments excluded), which
included 41 bass > 8 pounds. The total number of bass over 8 pounds weighed in was actually higher
than reported each year, because not all fsh over 8 pounds are weighed individually if much larger
fsh are already weighed for big bass. Looking back at the prior four survey years, total annual fsh
weighed in ranged from 7,000 (2010) 13,000 (2009), and annual number of fsh > 8 pounds
ranged from 25 (2007) 44 (2009).
During all fve survey years, average weight of individual bass weighed in tourneys was similar and
ranged from 2.4 2.8 pounds. As you would predict, during all fve surveys years average total weights
were higher for team than individual tourneys. For team tourneys, during all fve years it required
19.1 pounds or more to place in the top three and on average it took 22 - 25 pounds to win an event.
Over all survey years, overall catch rates of keeper bass varied some. In 2008 and 2009, over half of
the teams caught a limit and 15-18% caught total weights exceeding 15 pounds. In 2011, these values
increased to the highest observed over the eight years of the monitoring program, as 21% of teams had
limits over 15 pounds, and 60% of the feld caught limits. Average big bass weight was similar all fve
years and ranged from 8.4 8.9 pounds.
For individual tourneys, 2008 was the best for average winning weight (23.2 pounds). For both
2008 and 2009, it took over 19 pounds to place in the top three. Similar to results from team tourneys,
2007 and 2010 seemed to be off years for overall catch, as 4 - 6% of anglers caught at least 15 pounds
and 27 - 31% caught limits. But, these variables increased in 2011 when approximately 9% of anglers
caught 15 pounds or more, and 42% of the competitors caught limits. Average big bass weight over the
fve years ranged from 7.6 - 9.5 pounds.
Although Sam Rayburn is known for producing big fsh, on average during all fve years it took
tourney anglers approximately 1,000 hours to catch a bass > 8 pounds. Looked at another way using
9 hours for tourney day length, tourney anglers on average would weigh in a fsh > 8 pounds for every
111 events. Again, these statistics on fsh > 8 pounds are slightly biased and are underestimates as
stated above, but certainly get us in the ballpark. The point here is that these big fsh are rare, even in
productive waters like Sam Rayburn.
In summary, Sam Rayburn Reservoir receives a signifcant amount of tournament-related fshing
effort. In fact, including tournaments of all sizes, over 400 tournaments occur annually at Sam
Rayburn with over 25,000 participants. Given the signifcant number of tournaments, trends in these
tournament statistics still refect a high quality largemouth bass fshery at Sam Rayburn Reservoir,
and indicate that numbers of bass > 4 pounds are relatively high. However, it is still very important
that tourney anglers do all they can to minimize tournament-related mortality. Given how rare big

Phenomenal weights surge
Iles & Shook to win Bass N Bucks
Toledo Series Championship
By Patty Lenderman, Lakecaster
After a long wait to wrap up the Bass N Bucks Toledo 2011 series, the Championship took place
January 7-8, 2012. Although both Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend lake levels have been climbing,
the decision was made to have the Championship on Sam Rayburn at the Umphrey Family
Pavilion. A Ranger Z120 powered by Yamaha 225 hp was on the line as the Grand Prize of the
Championship, valued at nearly $50,000.
The feld was set for the teams who qualifed during the fve regular season events on Toledo
during 2011. Many scampered all over Sam Rayburn trying to fnd fsh during practice. In a
delightfully odd circumstance for January, the weather was beautiful. Saturday had temps tickling
the 70 degree mark, calm winds and mostly sunny skies. Sunday presented itself with a varied mix
of fog, then light breeze, scattered rain, and sunny patches.
The frst team to weigh in established the
mark to beat for day 1. Danny Smith and Bubba
Nugent brought in a 24.28 lb sack with a 7.68 lb
kicker. Later, Tommy Howard and Jim Furr took
over the lead with 27.83 lbs, and bested the big
bass lead with a 7.76 pounder. Howard & Furr
remained in the overall lead at the end of the
day, but big bass was later taken by Gary Newell
with an 8.90 lb sow.
The contending teams had the option to participate in the side pot. 100% would be paid back to
2nd thru 10th place. Additional sponsor product would be given to 11th thru 20th place teams.
Danny Iles & Brian Shook came in a little early the fnal day and shocked the scales with their
fve fsh creel. They had a lot of ground to make up for. They brought in 16.87 lbs the frst day,
putting them in 7th place coming in to day 2. Their fnal day sack was daunting. First the fsh and
water were poured out of their bag. Then a decision had to be made which of the bass in the 8 lb
class was biggest to contend for Big Bass awards. Their biggest fell just short of the top mark for Big
Bass. Then the rest of their creel was added and everyone watched as the scales locked in at 38.93
pounds! This gave them a two day total at 55.80 lbs. Were wondering if it could be a new two day
Top 4 line-up Day 1
Tommy Howard & Jim Furr 40.39
Danny Smith & Robert Nugent 37.97
Martin Elshout & Mark Price 37.48
Dennis Edgar & Gary Newell 35.12
Danny Iles and Brian Shook made up for lost ground and then some, bringing in
a 38.93 lb sack on Day 2, leaving the rest of the pack in the dust, winning the
Championship by more than a 17 lb margin.
Coming way up the ranks from 25th on day 1 to a 2nd place nish, the
Ricky & Ronnie Madole ended up with a 38.42 lb two day total.
Danny Smith and Robert Nugent started out strong on day
1 with this 24.28 lb sack. Adding 13.48 lbs on day 2, they
won 3rd place overall

team record for Rayburn, Dave Concienne pondered.
Iles and Shook came in about an hour before anyone else, so the long wait commenced. Another
big sack came in, caught by Ricky & Ronny Madole weighing 27.11 lbs. They were in 25th place at
the end of Day 1 with 11.31 lbs, but their second day catch propelled them to 2nd place. Everyone
watched and waited for the leaders from the frst day to come in. Smith & Nugent, 2nd place on
Day 1, added 13.48 lbs to their total landing them in 3rd place on the fnal day. Day 1 leaders
Howard & Furr only had 9.91 lbs giving them a 4th place fnish.
When the scales closed, Danny Iles & Brian Shook had won the tournament by more than a
17 pound margin! Danny, a Sr at Lamar University in the Mechanical Engineering Program and
Brian, an Instrument Tech at Scallon Controls, recanted their weekend. With what we found in
practice, we were just hoping for 18 or 19 pounds per day. The frst day we caught all of our fsh
on chatter baits and swim jigs. It only yielded us just over 16 pounds the frst day. We knew the
fsh we needed were there, we just couldnt get the right ones to bite. Determined, they went back
to the same spots, edges of grass mats in 4-6, and tried for them again. We knew we had to do
something different, so we started the second day with a 6th Sense square bill crank bait. They
landed two 7 pounders early in the morning using that tactic. At 12:00, we still didnt have a limit
in the boat. Changing to Strike King plastics, they started fshing deeper. We hit some real deep
water, dragging plastics off of main lake points. We fnished our limit with some nice fsh, and
caught a bunch of Kentuckys. They only made
one cull, trading a 5 pounder for an 8. Bass N
Bucks presented them with the guaranteed grand prize Ranger
Z120 powered by Yamaha 225 hp as the Grand Prize of the
Championship, valued at nearly $50,000. In addition, Danny
was the top fnishing angler signed up for the Cabelas bonus
worth $1,000 in the Championship. The team would like to
thank Needmore Tackle, Power Tackle, Carlson Marine, Jordan
Marine, 6th Sense Lures, Costa Del Mar, Ranger and Mercury
for their sponsorship and support. We would also like to thank
Dave and Tricia Concienne. They put on a really great circuit
and we really enjoy fshing Bass N Bucks.
Ricky & Ronnie Madole had a tough day Saturday, only
bringing in just over 11 pounds putting them in a 25th place
position coming into Day 2. Everything changed Sunday. Its
just one of those lucky deals! they stated. We had been fshing
in water 8 deep the frst day and a lot of the second day. They
had a limit in the boat early on Day 2, but again it was a small
limit. They had caught some of their fsh on shallow running
crank baits, but at 11:30 we started questioning ourselves:
What are we doing here? Deeper water was nearby, a ditch
that dropped to about 18. Ricky made a cast to the deeper
water with his crank bait and landed the class of bass they were
looking for. Thats what keyed us in. They were suspended in
that deeper water. We got on that and culled all of our original
limit. They brought in a 27.11 lb sack, besting their own
record, and surged from 25th place to a 2nd place win. The
team received a check for $2,400.
Danny Smith & Robert Nugent had a strong lead on Day 1,
in 2nd place with 24.28 lbs. We did good until today, we just
couldnt get them in! They brought in three bass weighing
13.48 lbs on Day 2 giving them a 3rd place overall fnish. We
had them on, but they kept breaking off. They fshed both
days with jigs in drains up to 18 deep. The team won $1,200
and would like to thank Brians Marine in Vidalia, LA for their
support.

MICRO LAUNCH RODS
R1-BASS UNVEILS ITS NEWLINE OF CUSTOMMICRO LAUNCH RODS.
THE HIGH PERFORMANCE RODS ARE DESIGNED FOR THE SKILLED RECREATIONAL
AND PROFESSIONAL TOURNAMENT ANGLERS. RAY WESTMAN OWNER OF
R1-BASS EXPLAINS HOWTHE 3.5MMMICRO GUIDES, IMPROVES SENSITIVITY,
CASTING DISTANCE, PERFORMANCE AND DURABILITY.
NEW RODS? YOU BET?
R1-Bass is the frst independent tackle dealer in East Texas to commission
the design of high performance task specifc rods using micro guides.
What are the advantages of a fshing rod using micro guides?
Anglers place a high priority on the sensitivity and balance of a fshing rod. Reducing the tip section
weight of a fshing rod has a major impact on the in hand feel of the rod. A set of micro guides weigh
85% less than a set of conventional guides. Improved casting distance occurs due to line control which
results in reduction of lateral losses caused by line slap when using larger conventional guides. When
a fsherman frst picks up a Micro Launch Rod he notices the immediate difference in the feel of the rod
compared to any other rod he has held in his hand. R1-Bass has demo rods for the fsherman to pick
up and make test cast. As the Pro Staff has tested the rods, Ray ask that if you have an interest in the
rods come by the store and see him or speak with one of the pro staff members you may know.
Pro Staff members are
David Truax, Kris Wilson and Cody Comeaux.

Bass Champs starts off with a bang
and nishes with a $20,000 Win!
By Jodie Warner
Bass Champs held their frst Lake Sam Rayburn tournament of the New Year on January 21. They had a
total of 234 team entries and paid back 96 percent. There were a total of 675 fsh weighed in totaling 1,720
lbs with the average weight being 2.55 lbs. The day was overall good for the teams, with 112 limits coming
to the stage.
Not long after the boaters left for a long day of fshing David Gregg of Palestine and Jim Phillips of
Greenwood, MS brought in the biggest bass Bass Champs has ever weighed in on Sam Rayburn, registering
on the scales at 12.51 lbs.
The guys were allowed to go back out and fsh to get the rest of their limit; however, fell short of the
weight needed. They only brought in another 6.92 lbs to round out their day, giving them a total of 19.43
lbs and ninth place, earning a total of $2060 and an Abu Garcia Reel Bonus.
Gregg and Phillips seemed to be the projected winners throughout the day; however, Ronald Risenhoover
of Lufkin and Charles Ford Jr. of Sam Rayburn ended up taking the $20,000 prize with a fve fsh limit that
weighed 25.70 lbs. They said, we just fshed deep all day long in two spots, we had one just shy of 7 lbs and
one a little over 7 lbs but the rest of them were just good quality fsh we fshed with the Bass Kandi trick
worm and their little Swing Kick in about 25 feet of water. Also, We went to mid lake drop offs and fshed
deep water with the following Bass Kandi products: Trick Worms, Brush Busters, Swing Hook Jigs, Football
head sliding weights, and Castaway Rods, and Vicious Fluorocarbon line. We would also like to thank The
Tackle Monkey store (Sam Rayburn), Bass Kandi lures, Interstate Batteries, Vicious Line, Daiichi, X-Point
Hooks and Castaway Rods. We would also like to thank Bass Champs for putting on a fne tournament!
Phillip Crelia and TJ Goodwin, both of Center, came in second with a limit weighing 23.03 lbs and took
home $5,000. They fshed with a non-red Rat-L-Trap in 3-8 feet of water; we burned a lot of gas, caught
about 50 throughout the day, but just a bunch of little fsh.
Robert Byrd Jr. of Dallas and Marvin Ettredge of Shreveport came in third overall with a bag totaling
21.80 lbs and took home $3,000. Byrd and Ettredge fshed in 18 feet water and said yeah, we lost a few that
could have bumped us up, but thats just the nature when youre deep crankin, sometimes you just lose
some.
As for the Big Bass of the tournament this one set all new records for Bass Champs East Region
and a new personal catch record as well. Ive been coming to fsh Rayburn since 1996 and will always
remember this day as my best ever! stated Jim Phillips of Greenwood, MS. It was less than 30 minutes
into the tournament, and we were less than a mile from our take off point, Phillips recalled. My partner
David Gregg and I were fshing deep rock and brush on a main lake point. Fishing in 6 depths, he had a
watermelon red Carolina rigged Grande Bass Rattlesnake. I was fshing a high speed Abu Garcia Revo reel
spooled with 20 lb Vicious Pro Elite Fluorocarbon on the main line and 12 lb Vicious Fluorocarbon on the
leader. The rod was a Kistler 7 3 Carbon Steel Rod. It was rigged with a 3/4 oz. Strike King Tungsten weight
and a 4/O Gamakatsu Round Bend hook. Thats when it happened the catch of a lifetime! To ensure
good care and safekeeping of this humungous catch, they brought it straight to the Bass Champs scales.
Registering at 12.51 pounds, the tournament offcials took possession of the bass while the team returned to
the lake to work on the rest of their fve fsh limit.
After I had taken the fsh to an early weigh-in and then returned to the spot to continue fshing,
Risenhoover and Ford Jr. display their
25.70 lbs limit that won them $20,000
Phillip Crelia holds up the two biggest in
the limit he and TJ Goodwin brought in
weighing 21.80 lbs for a 2nd place win
Third place Robert Byrd Jr. and Marvin Etteredge
accept their winnings and talk about their day on
the water

it occurred to me that I had caught a 12.51 lb fsh on 12 lb Vicious Fluorocarbon that was being
dragged across rock after the hook set. Wow, I was so thankful for this great product! It was the largest
bass of my life and was made possible by mostly Texas products. I want to thank Chad Potts and the
Skeeter Bass Champs team for taking care of us at such an early start of the day. My only regret is that
I didnt take measurements to have a replica made. I wanted more than anything to get it returned
to Sam Rayburn to continue her spawning activities with as little stress as possible. I also am grateful
to Michael Joe Cannon of Cannon Motor Company in Greenwood, MS for making it possible for me to
travel and fsh in the Texas area lakes and around the country. We were fshing out of Davids brand
new FX21 Skeeter and his 250 hp Yamaha SHO. Wow, what a ride!! The team earned $1,000 for their
Big Bass catch, and achieved a 9th place overall fnish for an additional $1,060. Since they were using
an Abu Garcia Revo Reel to catch the Big Bass of the tournament, they qualifed to win the Abu Garcia
Bonus of two new Revos!
Bass Champs said that although re-runs are showing on WFN at the moment, that new episodes will be
coming in April and they will also be hosting the biggest one day tournament in the nation on Lake Fork on
April 1. They will be giving away seven trucks, one every hour for the biggest bass and the largest overall will
take home a truck and a boat. For more information visit basschamps.com.
The next tournament for Bass Champs East Region will be February 18 back on Sam Rayburn at the
Umphrey Family Pavilion. In the mean time, Bass Champs staff & crew are heading to Lake LBJ to kick off
the Central Region January 28.

Big Sam is slowly getting water
back after the drought and the grass
lines are getting right for a good spawn.
If everything holds together it should
be a great year here on Sam Rayburn.
There is a lot of new vegetation on the
shoreline. If the lake should get up into
it there will be lots of cover for the bass
to use. There will be a lot of fsh moving
around in the shallows at this time of
year. They are looking for the perfect
spot to make a nest and lure a big ole
female into spawn. Lots of the big
females will start to stage just outside on
the points and ledges. Then they wait to
move in when the time is right. Ive seen
it be 19 degrees on Friday morning when
we launched and still get a couple of 4
lb bass right out of the box. By Tuesday
its back up to 60 or 70 degrees and were
catching a ton of bass when they stack
up waiting to spawn. This is the month
to be out on the lake hunting big bass.
Check out new areas looking for males
working on their nest.
Sam Rayburn is known for the lipless
crankbait bite and Rayburn Red is the
prime color. Dont get stuck on just one
color red. Sometimes just a small shade
of difference can be the ticket and there
lots of new baits and colors each year.
Strike Pro Lures has the Flap Jack that
come in lots of different colors and
theyve helped catch some nice fsh for
us in January. Anther good bait to cover a
lot of water looking for fsh is the Stanley
Spinner Bait. They help create a lot of
fun when a bass smashes it. You cant
beat this time of for year getting out and
enjoying the water. Its so peaceful. You
can get a jump on the game and fgure
out where the fsh are starting to stack
up for the spawn.
Remember the Sharelunker Program
entries started on October 1 and runs
thru April 30th. If you havent heard,
it encourages anglers who catch a 13
- pound- plus largemouth bass to lend
or donate it to the TPWD for spawning
purposes. There are some great benefts
doing this and one of them is that the
angler receives a fberglass replica of
the bass. There is a 24- hour pager at
1-888-784-0600 Check out the Program
rules at their site along with the benefts.
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/
visitorcenters/tffc/sharelunker/
The Crappie should start moving back
down the river and along the grass lines
looking for spawning spots. Just a couple
of days of warm weather can trigger the
move and get them active in the pockets.
We had a lot of days last year that we had
fun with the kids. We were catching 50 to
60 crappie in the morning, then going
back in the evening and doing the same
thing. Youve got to hit it hard when its
right and make the most of it.
Thanks and God Bless!
February is the magical month. Bass are starting to move to
their spawning areas. The weather is warming - ok, some days
are better than others. We have had some good rains bringing
the lake up.
Its time to break out those Rat-L-Traps and start chunking
and winding. The old standby color Rayburn Red is working
as always. There are some new Traps out there that are doing
very good, the Zombie in white, chrome/black and Rayburn red
in 1/2 oz. These baits are working very well in depths of 6-12
ft. of water over the old
grass. As of press time
the lake has come up
a few feet making new
areas for the bass. As
the water comes up the
bass will be moving
into the new grass
(Johnson grass and
other weeds that were
high and dry) they will
be looking for food
and spawning areas.
A bait that is working
good over this area is
the new KVD sexy shad
ghost minnow in 1.5 and 2.5 sizes. Working the shallow fats
with a Caroling rigged lizard in watermelon red or, if it is a
cloudy day try June bug red.
Stop in at Anns Tackle and let Ann show you all the new
colors and baits that are working.
No reports on catfsh as of press time and the Crappie are
slow.

Chris & Rusty Harvey win
Bass N Bucks Sam Rayburn #2
with 21.70 lbs
By Patty Lenderman, Lakecaster
January 14, 2012 Umphrey Family Pavilion
The Bass N Bucks Sam Rayburn Series anglers headed back out on Sam Rayburn January 14, 2012 in the
hunt for big bass and big sacks trying for big paychecks in the second of fve series events. Just over 5 pounds
separated the top 15 places, but Rusty and Chris Harvey took the top spot with 21.70 lbs for the win.
The day began with frost on the ground as temperatures were in the lower 30s, warming to mid 60s by
days end. Anglers were allowed to trailer to any launch point on Sam Rayburn but had to make their last
cast before 3:00pm. Some came to Umphrey Pavilion by boat, some by truck, many with nice limits of bass.
As the weigh in commenced, the top weights continued to climb with the top three teams being among the
last to weigh.
There were two sacks over the 20 lb mark registered at the scales, the biggest of them caught by Rusty &
Chris Harvey. First weighing their largest fsh, it tallied 7.33 lbs. It missed the mark for Big Bass, so adding
their other four their total weight hit 21.70 lbs ultimately winning the tournament. Recanting their day,
It was COLD! Very frigid morning. We started out in the grass with rattle traps and had a limit within the
frst hour. We were trying to stay out in the deeper grass, around 7-12 deep. Their initial limit was small,
but continuing to throw traps all day they improved their creel. We culled up slowly, hitting about three
different spots. We used red rattle traps all day. Our last cull was at 2:45, when we caught the 7.33#. They
won the 1st place guaranteed check for $8,000. In addition, being the highest fnishing team signed up for
the Cabelas bonus they received that too. They would like to thank Ranger, Yamaha, Costa Del Mar, Big Bite
Baits and Falcon Rods.
Chance and Brandon Moton weighed in the next highest weight at 20.76 lbs to win 2nd place. We didnt
really have a plan other than to target grass lines. Finding such an area, they started out with crank baits. We
caught two on crank baits pretty early. Later, around 9:30 we managed two more on jigs. Staying in this 100
yd stretch, at 10:30 they caught their 5th fsh on a chatter bait. That one was a good fsh, but we had a small
one in the livewell we really needed to cull. Having a limit, some pressure was off but they had struggled for
them. We landed another keeper, but couldnt cull anything with it. Finally, going back to the jig, at 2:30 they
culled their smallest fsh and came in. They were guessing they may have had around 18 pounds, but the scales
revealed a 20.76 lb sack to win 2nd place overall and $4,000.
It was a very narrow margin between 3rd and 4th place. Only 2/100ths of a pound! Jonathan Garrie &
Casey Sobczak won 3rd with 19.46 lbs. Starting out with deep crank baits, they caught three fairly early. For
the next three hours, we didnt catch anything. We were getting worried. Changing tactics, they headed to

shallow water with 6th Sense Lures square bill crank baits. We really struggled. Our 5th fsh was caught at
2:30. Five is all that is allowed, and they had the right fve for a 3rd place win and $3,000. They would like
to thank Sixth Sense Lures, Custom Angle Rods, Costa Del Mar and Hale Tackle.
When Brian and Beau Buckhalter walked up on stage with their bass, they had two that would beat the
prior big bass leaders. Setting the largest on the scales, it weighed 9.36 lbs to win $1,000 for that single catch!
Their second weighed 8.67 lbs, and that was their only two fsh for the day. Their total weight on two fsh was
17.90 lbs, winning 9th place overall. We had a real good day. Neither one of us have been on Rayburn since
last April, so we just went fshing. Heading to main lake points ranging from 8 to 12 deep, they threw big
crank baits and each landed a big sow.
There are three tournaments remaining in the Bass N Bucks Sam Rayburn Series: Feb 4, March 3 & May
5. The Toledo Bend Series will kick off January 28 at Cypress Bend. ALL Toledo Series events will be held on
Toledo Bend regardless of the lake level.

boater ed Now required
for operators born after
sept. 1, 1993
(Jan. 07, 2012 - AUSTIN, TX)...
Anyone looking forward to operating a motor-
powered vessel, sailboat or personal water craft
on Texas public waters this year needs to have
completed a state-approved boater education
course if born after Sept. 1, 1993.
While the new law became effective last year,
Texas Parks and Wildlife suggests starting off the
new year with a boater education course to make
sure youre good to go when the water warms up
and Texans begin heading to the states many
lakes and streams for fshing or recreational
boating. Prior to passage of the new law, only
boat operators ages 13-17 had to take a boater
education course.
The mandatory boater education law requires
certifcation for anyone born after Sept. 1, 1993
who operates a vessel with a motor of more than
15 horsepower or a wind-blown vessel measuring
more than 14 feet in length. While all boaters
are encouraged to take boating safety education,
those born before Sept. 1, 1993, are exempt from
required certifcation.
Texas state-approved boater education
courses are available as one-day classroom
training or online.. The classroom course takes
about six hours to complete and the online
course has a three hour time commitment.
Costs start at $20 for both courses. Information
about boater education, including schedules
of upcoming classroom courses, is available at
the tpwd.state.tx.us/learning/boater_education/
website.
Potential new boaters looking for bargain
instruction can get the required training from a
TPWD boater education employee for $5 at the
Jan. 19-22 Austin Boat Show at the Convention
Center. Interested persons may call 512-389-8141
to register for the class.
Boaters falling under the boater education
requirement will be required to carry a
valid ID and documentation of having
taken and passed a boater education course.
Failure to meet the requirements is a Class C
misdemeanor, and violators have 90 days to
complete a boater education course to have the
charges dismissed.
The 82nd Texas Legislature during its regular
session also clarifed the defnition of a vessel
to encompass such craft as standup paddle
craft, kayaks and canoes. In Texas public waters
everyone onboard a vessel that measures less
than 26-feet in length must have a life jacket
available and kids under 13 must wear one.

musT have producTs For 2012
By Andrew Upshaw, Tri Lakes Tackle
Every year I feel like fshing evolves 10 fold. Well this year is no
different. Im going to list a few products that I feel every angler needs
to know about. Today you can get left behind if you do not stay up on
the latest and greatest products. Unfortunately the latest and greatest
are all expensive so the average fsherman might only be able to afford
one of the products listed below. This is not a bad thing however, but at
some point you have to decide which product below would be best for
you now. Below I am going to list money saving ways to get the products
you need to be successful.
Power Pole Sportsman Series 2
These Power Poles come in one color, black, and are extremely
durable. They are a step up from their originators, The Sportsman
Series. The one I recommend for the average consumer is at least an 8
footer. Retail price for one of these bad boys is $1,300. Now compare that
to the Signature Series at $1,700. Although it is only $400 difference, but
if you put 2 Power Poles on, you are saving $800. You cant beat that!
The reason I pick a Power Pole frst is the vast amount of applications it
can be used for. You can use it for setting up on bedding fsh, keep your
boat on the bank to assist on loading and unloading, or pole down
when fshing for grass fsh and you come over a big group of them. This
is the one product that honestly, I could never see myself not having
again. I would recommend 2, but if you can afford just one, go for it. If
you dont have a shallow water anchor these days you are running way
behind and you will get beat by guys who know how to use them.
Hydrowave
Many could argue that a Hydrowave would be more suited in
tournament fshing and many fshermen feel it would never beneft
them. I will have to say I believe in this product. I have had many
instances where I felt like my Hydrowave helped me get fsh to bite when
before, I dont think I could have caught them. An instance where I feel
it would help the average angler on Sam Rayburn or Toledo Bend would
be around schooling fsh. I love fshing schooling fsh on Toledo in the
summer and fall and I can tell you one thing, this device sure keeps
those fsh up and around your boat. It is remarkable. As soon as you
turn the unit on in schooling fsh the shad start attacking your trolling
motor and will literally form a school around it. They will then proceed
to start popping the top of the water similar to bream popping pads. I
honestly must say this would defnitely be at the top of my list for 2012
as a fsherman. Retail for these units is around $389.95 and you can
purchase them at Tri-Lakes Tackle!
Strike Pro Hunchback
Although this isnt an electronic device and it isnt a new product
there are some new things coming with the Hunchback. This spring Tri-
Lakes Tackle and other Rayburn tackle stores will each have a signature
color that you can only get from these locations. I know I helped Tri-
Lakes design their color and honestly I havent seen a color as close to a
river minnow as this one is. It will be pretty awesome to see how it works
and the nice thing is there will only be 200 made. Thats right, only 200
will ever be made of this color. I know that Tri-Lakes is taking pre-orders
now and they wont last long at all. This and other colors offered by
Anns Tackle will only be sold in those locations and will be very limited.
This is a great product that retails for around $9.99. I have a few colors
that will be released this coming year that will really change the game a
little. We are adding a lot of detail to the coloring.
I hope all the products I listed will be something that benefts
you and allows you to catch more fsh and to stay competitive. Just
remember, minus the Hunchback, these products wont directly catch
the fsh for you, but they will increase your chances of putting yourself
in position to catch them. Thats all you can ask from a product like
that. Just keep fshing, lakes are coming up and fsh are biting!

It has become a highly anticipated annual event, as Texas Parks & Wildlife hosts its annual Youth
Trout Derby at Jasper City Park now in its 11th year. Record setting attendance by families young and
old, near and far lined the banks enjoying the day and catching those fsh!
Normally the weather is quite cold and often misty or rainy during this two hour event. This year
was different, and on January 21st it was unseasonably warm and the great weather made it even
more enjoyable than ever.
This activity is all about promoting fshing and is a free event for kids up to 16 years of age. Kids 16
and under are not required to have a fshing license. Each child who entered the tournament received
a ticket that qualifed them for prizes at the end of the day in the open drawing and free hot dogs and
drinks. No pre-registration was required. Prizes were awarded in three different age categories; 0 - 7
yrs, 8 - 11 yrs and 12 - 16 years for largest trout, smallest trout and largest other species caught. Trout
is not the only fsh in the pond, there are catfsh, bass, bream, crappie and other species in it.
In preparation for this event, Jasper City Park Pond was stocked with 1,800 rainbow trout. There
were a limited number of rods and reels provided. Fishing bait (earthworms and kernel corn) and
terminal tackle (hooks, sinkers and bobbers) were also provided. The daily bag limit for rainbow
trout is 5 fsh and participants were welcome to harvest up to 5 trout at the event.
The tournament time was scheduled for 10 am till noon, but there were many that got to the pond
way before starting time. Setting all new records, there were 563 participants that were set up all
around the pond in their favorite spot, trying to get the big one on. The excited crowd included not
only the young but also many elderly adults that were excited to wet a hook! Many grandparents were
proud to have their grandkids fshing with them - wanting to pass on the great sport of fshing. One of
the youngest grandkids at the event was 6 weeks old. Hopefully Allysun will be back next year fshing
the tournament with her own pink rod & reel!
The weather was not the only special treat this year. Todd Faircloth, pro angler from Jasper, TX was
very excited to be available to help promote fshing
and getting the kids involved in his sport. Todd tours
the country in National tournament trails, including
FLW, Bassmaster Elite and is now preparing to fsh
his 10th Bassmaster Classic, the World Series of bass
fshing. Todd represents his sport and his hometown,
Jasper, TX very well. He is a very positive and humble
person who says that he remembers starting out
fshing with his father right here on lake Sam
Rayburn. I am living the American dream and no
one is ever too young or too old to participate in this
sport, stated Faircloth. He was available for pictures,
autographs and answered many fshing questions
for everyone. Todd is truly a great role model for our
youth today!
There were (3) weigh stations set up around the
pond. No matter the size of the catch, you could see
large smiles on every face that was lined up to weigh
their catch.
After the tournament ended at noon, everyone
gathered around in anticipation to see who won

the divisions and also to listen for their number to be drawn in the random drawings for the
many bicycles, rod & reel combos, tackle boxes, chairs and other items. Ray Lenderman, the event
coordinator could be heard loud and clear this year due to the speaker system that was provided by
KJAS. We would like to thank everyone who came out again this year, stated Ray. He also reminded
everyone that they could continue coming out to fsh for the trout. The trout will only be here while
the water is cool enough for them. They are really fun to catch and taste really great!
Ray really encouraged the audience to remember to thank, support and patronize all of the businesses that
donated to the tournament this year. Without these great businesses and people, this event would not be the
success that it is. Academy from Lufkin sent (2) of their employees to personally assist in the event. National
Honor Society members, Matt Perdue, Lane Kipp, Sllena Shellhammer, Justin & Chance Mays donated their
time to help TPW make this day possible. For more information or any questions regarding the trout derby,

The lake continues to
rise but you should still
use caution running the
north end boat lanes,
especially if you are
running north out of the
Huxley. For those that
are unfamiliar with this area, the Red and Greens
terminate at the Huxley boat lane and single buoys
mark the river channel to the mouth of the Sabine
River. If you turn north from the Huxley boat lane
there are four cuts that cut off the oxbows in the river
and they have some huge stumps in them. Now that the
lake has risen, these stumps are just under the water.
The fourth cut is just north of Myrick Reach Point
(Green Willow Point); then you can run wide open to
the river proper. Watch your depth fnder and when you
start coming out of 20 ft of water, shut it down. Mark
the cuts on your GPS and you wont have any trouble
when running this area.
February is the month the Bass and Crappie will
start moving from deep water using the creeks and
ditches as their highways heading to the shallow
spawning fats. Shallow water warms faster and
the bass will move into the shallows when the water
temp approaches 55 degrees. This is what we refer to
as staging before they move on the beds. The bass
will go on a feeding frenzy bulking up for the spawn.
If the water temperature drops, the bass will drop back
into deeper water. All sorts of baits can be productive at
this time, jigs, spinner baits, traps, soft plastics, fnesse
baits, cranks and jerk baits.
The Crappie will also start moving into the deep
creek channels in anticipation to their spawn. Work
the bends and points of the channel with jigs and
shiners especially areas that have brush or cover. When
the Crappie move into the shallows to spawn, work the
fats with a shiner or jig on a slip cork with an eighteen
to twenty-four inch leader around grass lines, stumps
and cypress trees. A Beatle Spin or similar lure on an
ultra-lite spinning rig can be used to cover a lot of
water until you locate the fsh.
When you talk about fshing in February, you
immediately associate fshing the river proper for
the annual White Bass river migration. Unless we get
a large amount of rain and considering the low lake
conditions, most of the Whites will remain on the main
lake north end sandbars. Slab spoons and Rat-L-Traps
will be the ticket.

Bass Good report.
Start your day out in
8 to 15 of water, using
your electronics to
fnd drains or ditches
leading into spawning
fats. Then, use a 73
medium action TFO
rod paired with your favorite reel and spooled with FINS
braid to throw a xr75 black back /gold body or royal red
Xcalibur One Knocker. The other way we are catching
these staging fsh is on a DD14 or a 5XD in red/black,
black/chartreuse or coachdog/fretiger rigged on a 7
9 TFO medium action rod and 15# furor carbon line.
The other option is in 2 to 5 around patches of grass
with one of two baits, a chatter bait or a hollow body
swim bait in sexy shad or fre tiger, fshed on a TFO 7
9 medium/heavy action rod with 20# fuoro carbon in
the same areas. We are also fshing oz to 5/8 oz jigs in
black/blue or brown/purple with matching trailers on a
TFO 79 heavy action rod and 65# FINS braid. The key
is to drag the jig on the bottom, not hop it. As the water
warms make sure to get a pair of Flying Fisherman
polarized glasses and be looking for bedding fsh.
Crappie - Good report. I have started in the back
of creeks using Road Runners in black/ chartreuse or
orange. These seem to work the best.
Catfsh - Excellent report. Fish in 2 to 16 of water
in creek bends and fats at backs of creeks. Fish can be
caught on liver or live bait.
Remember to take a kid fshing and when it tugs on
the line... SET THE HOOK!!!!

South Toledo Fishing
By Pro Guide Joe Joslin, 30 Years Experience on Toledo Bend
Joejoslinoutdoors@yahoo.com 337-463-3838 409-565-1288
Hello fellow anglers!
At press time the lake
level was near 162.5
which is still almost 10
feet below full pool but
so much better than
159.5 which was what
we had in mid November. Even though we have had to
deal with low water levels, fshing has been excellent-
to-outstanding at times. The extra water gives more
room in the drains and coves as well as more room
in the launch areas. In addition, the rising water and
a few warm days have helped to move some of the
bass population into the drains and ditches as well as
staging on points and ridges close to spawning areas.
The bass are loaded with roe (eggs). The extra water on
top of the grass has really created some super fshing
conditions as it makes it ideal to run one of my favorite
springtime lures, a Stanley s 3/8 oz Vibrashaft and
Vibra Wedge spinnerbait over the grass just at the edge
of the grass. Hold on!
We are also having success on Bill Lewis Rat-L-Traps
worked in the same areas as spinnerbaits, especially
if the water is slightly stained as we have in the back
of all major feeder creeks currently. I really love the
new Zombie Series from Bill Lewis, and even more
important...the bass do too! Two of my favorite new trap
colors are Rayburn Red Zombie and Citrus Zombie.
Checkem out!! In addition to spinnerbaits and traps,
we are also catching bass on wacky rigs (Senkos and
Havoc Bottom Hoppers), light weighted Texas rigs as
well as Texas weightless rigs all worked on the outside
grass edge from 6 to 15 feet. We are throwing the Texas
weightless rigs into very shallow water.
During February there are always multiple patterns
and another pattern in slightly deeper water is a jig
and also a Carolina rig worked on deep points, in the
middle of drains as well as on ridges close to spawning
areas. The depth for these patterns vary depending on
the weather conditions as the fsh will be shallow on
this structure if there is a warming trend or deeper if
there are several days of colder weather. I am working
depths from 10 to 25 feet. My favorite jig for this pattern
has been Stanleys Bugeye football jig in black/blue in
1/2 and 3/4 oz sizes. For Carolina rigs we have used
Berkley Power Lizard, Havoc Bottom Hopper, Speed
Craw and Berkleys Chigger Craw.
Crankbaits are also very effective this month as
we like to work Norman s Deep Little N (DLN) on the
outside grass edge as well as running the DD22s over
deep points and deeper ridges where big females hang
out to stage. For serious cranking, I like to use 12 lb
Berkley 100% Fluorocarbon line and a Revo Winch reel
with a 7 10 All Star Big Crankin Rod Series. Also, if
weather stays cold this month for a few days, we also
bring out the jigging spoon and drop shot rigs and
move out to the deeper water in 30 to 45 feet.
As far as the crappie, they are moving in the creeks
and early this month the males will start to move into
the drains and ditches where they can be caught on
a small Beetle Spin or slow-moving 1/16 oz jig with
Berkley Crappie Nibble attached. I have found that in
February, this pattern may be more successful in the
late afternoon after the sun has warmed things up a bit.
Good fshing.....and keep praying for rain. We need the
rain and you need the practice. God Bless!

2012.....IM FEELING HOPEFUL!
by Pro Guide, Joe Joslin
Hello fellow anglers. I have at least three things, as far as my
fshing vocation that really gives me reason to be hopeful as we get
into the second month of 2012. The frst one is that we have gotten
almost a three foot rise on Toledo and Rayburn from the bottom
out which occurred in mid-November. Since then, we have
received several inches of rain which has helped tremendously in
putting some water in the lake. We certainly need a lot more but
when you have been navigating on south Toledo with a level of
159.5 then 162.5 is a huge improvement. It certainly adds more
room in coves/drains and at boat launches. Most of the boat
launches were then either closed or mere mud holes. Many are still
closed but several resorts/marinas extended ramps when the lake
went in the low 160s. The 3 ft rise does increase options.
The second factor has to do with SRA Louisiana suspending
water sales negations with Toledo Bend Partners. Most reading
this column and other sources for the past two months have been
following the subject of the pending long term water sales contract
between Louisiana SRA and a broker group called Toledo Bend
Partners. Several Toledo lake area citizens groups, numerous
Toledo fshermen, Toledo residents and business owners for
weeks expressed serious opposition to the proposal. This group is
breathing a little easier following a January 12 SRA public meeting.
A packed room of 300-400 people crowed into the main meeting
room at Toledos Cypress Bend Resort. There was a lot of tension
in the air before the meeting started as everyone was wondering
what would be the response of the Louisiana SRA and the 13
Commissioners to the publics expressed opposition. The wait was
short-lived as the meeting was called to order, there was a roll call
and a prayer for rain and the meeting agenda was changed to deal
with the water sales contract subject frst. SRA Louisiana Executive
Director, Jim Pratt, took the microphone and made a brief
comment and then read a prepared statement which basically said
that all 13 commissioners had voted to suspend contracts talks with
TBP until Louisiana adopts a comprehensive surface water plan.
Pratt went on to add that 386 comments had been sent to the
SRA in the established comment period which basically ran from
just before Christmas until January 6. Of those, only 7 comments
expressed support for the contract while the rest, over 98% were
opposed. There is much work to be done on this vital issue and I
am encouraged that several local legislatures appear to view this
issue with signifcant importance. While there were a few heated
moments at the meetings I attended, most citizens expressed
their opinions and concerns in a civil and American free-speech
format. Optimistically, the drought of the past two years could
have a long term, positive impact on beautiful Toledo Bend. The
drought made all of us realize the importance of plenty of water
in the lake and the fact that we must get this contract right. I saw
very little in the tabled contract that put the lake frst. We now
have another chance. My kids and grandkids caught their frst fsh
on Toledo and like so many of you, I love Toledo Bend and thank
God for the many sunrises I have experienced there. I personally
express appreciation to Gov. Jindals offce, SRA Director, Jim
Pratt, and the 13 commissioners for reconsidering this important
matter. Our state agencies now have the huge task of developing a
comprehensive surface water plan for water use in the rivers and
lakes in our beloved Louisiana. We wish them well.
The third and fnal factor I want to mention has to do with
catching a big fsh recently. That always pumps me up! Just
before Christmas, Dec 20th which was a cold, clear but beautiful
morning in southwest Texas. I was fshing a jigging spoon on a
deep point on the extreme southern end of the Bend. I had two
clients with me and we had caught nothing on the frst hole that
we tried at sunrise. However, we decided to move a short distance
to another point and started to catch a few decent fsh. I eased the
boat out to where the depth dropped from 30 to 45 feet and moved
back slightly to around 36-38 feet and dropped my Klassic Lures
hammered jigging spoon vertically straight down under the boat.
I lifted it a couple of times and felt a thump and set the hook and
the rod doubled up. The fsh was heavy and strong and fought
like a big catfsh and made no attempt to come to the surface like
largemouth usually do. I thought I had a huge catfsh as we have
been catching some on spoons. However, I kept looking for the
forked tail of the catfsh but instead I saw something round and
dark. It was a huge bass that weighed 10 lbs and 13 ounces and
made my second double digit in 2011 with the frst one coming last
March in the Six Mile area on a 5 inch Senko rigged wacky style.
The big December spoon bass was the 9th over 10 pounds in my
fshing career with all of them coming from south Toledo. What a
great way to end the year!!

Area Club Updates
Our frst tournament for 2012 was held on Toledo Bend, on January 7th. Fishing on the
southern end of the lake the father and son team of Larry and Quincy Byrd used jigs to catch
their fve fsh tournament limit that weighed 19.33 lbs., which secured frst place.
Dean Jones and Jeff Latham also used jigs to put together a fve fsh bag that weighed 18.23
lbs. which earned them a second place fnish. Ricky Fuller and Chad Boudreaux fnished in third
with a tournament limit that weighed 17.37 lbs. The big bass of the tournament was a 7.35
pounder which was caught by Boudreaux.
Our next tournament will be February 4th on Toledo Bend.

Mike Price won the Many Bass Clubs January 2012 tournament with a fve fsh limit
weighing 16.63 lbs. Fishing grassy areas in 8 to 12 feet of water, in the 1215 area of
Toledo Bend, Price was using a crank bait and soft plastic. Bob Self fnished in second
place with another fve fsh limit weighing 13.74 lbs which included a 5.30 lb lunker
which claimed the Big Bass honors of the tournament. Harvey Coward won third place
with a fve fsh limit weighing 13.10 lbs. Good fshing gentlemen!
There was a total of 71 fsh caught that weighed 151 lbs for an average fsh weight
of 2.10 lbs.
Boater Safety: Toledo Bend Reservoir boat lanes are not safe to run! The low lake
level continues to create a hazard and every boater needs to be aware of the probable
danger. Stumps are everywhere between the red and green markers and the white lane
markers. Members noted that several boats were observed running the boating lanes
without regard to underwater obstructions. Please, operate your boat safely!

It was an early morning in the spring and a group
of around 20 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
biologists were listening for any bird large or
small that was calling. The one bird that caught
everybodys attention immediately was not some
rare endangered species or unusual inhabitant of
the area. It was a lone male northern bobwhite quail
giving the distinctive bob-white call.
In the past there were many northern bobwhite
quail (hereafter bobwhites) in the area, but they
have become less frequent. Currently in East Texas
places to hunt bobwhites are few and far between.
Places that hunt wild birds are even harder to come
by. This has happened because of many factors
some of the biggest are changing habitat practices,
forest ownership changes, and different forest
management.
Recently there has been an effort, called the
National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative (NBCI),
to combat the declining bobwhite population.
The NBCI is an effort to promote conservation on
the landscape level. This effort entails biologists,
conservation groups, and hunters from every state
where bobwhites occur.
The NBCI is an adaptable broad based plan for
habitat management and a map to mark a ranking
of where the effort will be most effective (high,
medium, and low). To develop the plan for habitat
management a team of professionals met with a
group of around 50 bobwhite experts from around
the country. From this meeting they developed a set
of goals for habitat restoration. To generate the map
the same team went to every state where bobwhites
occur and met professionals and volunteers to get
information from people on a smaller scale. More
than 600 people contributed to the making of the
map. In Texas, the meeting was held on the Texas
A & M Kingsville Campus. Biologists, hunters,
and conservationists from every part of the state,
including the pineywoods, came together and
contributed to making the map for Texas.
This plan is very important because it is the
starting point to tie key programs together for
effective bobwhite management. First, it will show,
on a map, the best places to focus the conservation
effort. Second, NBCI brings more attention to the
bobwhite decline and serves as source that can
be cited for participation in cost share programs.
Third, it will serve as a place for those interested in
bobwhite conservation to start.
A new national effort is on the scene to help
prevent the bobwhite from going the way of the dodo.
The bobwhite was an important part of our hunting
heritage and could be again. For more information
contact your local wildlife professional or visit the
NBCI web page at www.bringbackbobwhites.org .

So You Want To Be
A Fishing Lure Field Tester
I would bet that the majority of you that are
reading this article would like to be a fshing lure
feld tester. Having tackle dealers beating your
door down and giving you free merchandise to
use is a wonderful thought and a great way to fll
up that tackle box. But is there a downside to this
issue? Let me give you a bit of my experience in
this seemingly wonderful world.
First of all, the fshing tackle industry is
somewhat small when you compare it to others
such as automotive or clothing, and competition
in this world is ferce. It is defnitely a world
where only the strong survive. The industry is
also at the mercy of economic and environmental
conditions and companies have to be very careful
how they invest their money for promotion work,
advertising and public relations. But the fshing
industry is also made up of wonderful people, and
many of the leaders of the companies share your
enjoyment of wetting a hook.
The term feld tester is somewhat misused
since most all of the baits have already gone
through extreme testing before they are
introduced to the public. There are very few
companies that would throw a bunch of money
at a product before prototypes are designed and
tested, copyrights are acquired and a practical
marketing plan put together.
Most of todays companies establish a feld
staff team which consists of well known and
creditable anglers that not only can walk the
walk, but can also talk the talk. These folks
are invaluable to the company for attending
tournaments, trade shows and other marketing
venues and explaining to the public just why they
cannot do without the products. Usually these
folks are coordinated by a senior staff person
whose responsibility is to make sure that the
maximum amount of promotional exposure is
obtained for every dollar that is spent. And keep in
mind, the corporate executives also closely watch
all participants to be sure that budgets are kept
within specifed guidelines and that the company
gets the most bang for their buck.
I have worked many trade shows and can
assure you that some really great fsherman are
able to do a wonderful job talking on a one-on-
one basis with fellow anglers in a manufacturers
booth. However, put some of these individuals in
front of a large audience at say a seminar and you
may see a completely different person. Stage fright
sets in, legs turn to mush, brain freeze occurs
and in some cases the angler may even forget the
name of the product he is promoting.
At the other end of the spectrum you have
skilled anglers such a my friends and local pro
anglers Tommy Martin, Joe Joslin and Stephen
Johnston that seem to thrive on the big audience
and are at ease when explaining the what
to do and what not to dos of various fshing
merchandise.
So what can you expect if you are invited into
this elite group of anglers known as feld staff?
Usually you will receive merchandise valued at
a certain dollar amount and in return, you will
be asked to work a certain number of hours at a
boat/outdoor show, in-store promotion or even a
seminar. The time you allocate will basically repay
the company for the value of the merchandise you
received. Once this dollar amount is repaid other
fnancial options may come into play based on
your experience and skills.
For those anglers that win a number of
tournaments and have a gift of gab, monetary
agreements may take place on an individual basis.
I am sure that once you reach the level of say a
Kevin Van Dam that you would receive a pretty
good piece of change just for showing up at events
and of course additional perks such as vehicles
and memo boat programs come into play.
But as a regular feld staffer there are many
benefts that can not only help you improve your
fshing skills but also allow you to be involved in
some exciting work. Most of the feld staff that I
know are not in it for big bucks, but rather enjoy
the position because they love to just talk fshing
and be around other anglers.
As a feld staffer you are an extension of the
company you are representing and in most cases
you will be treated like one of the family. The
image you portray in the feld is very important
because that image is basically how the public
views the company. I can assure you that showing
up at one of the events in a dirty and tattered
T-shirt with a flthy boat will do a great deal of
harm to both you and your companys image. Add
to that a flthy mouth as you talk to people and
your time being a feld staffer is going to be short
term.
Being a team player and discussing openly and
honestly the products that your company produces
has another benefcial consideration. You will be
gaining the respect of the people you deal with
and some of those people may be other fshing
tackle industry people that might be able to help
you expand your activities into other areas of the
business. Dont ever think that contacts are not
important and I assure you that industry people
talk to other industry people. If your name comes
up in a positive way your future may be bright for
representing a number of established frms. If it
comes up in a negative manner your feld staff
days are numbered. These guys want people on
their staff that are good and will go out of their
way to keep them. Once you are dropped from a
promotional staff the word spreads fast and your
chance of getting on with a different group is very
limited.
There is probably not a day that goes by when
the larger manufacturing companies dont
receive letters from local pros wanting to be on
their feld staff team. My advice is to work up a
nice professional looking resume that explains
your background, why you think you could
help the company and be sure to include a good
photograph. Keep the resume short and to the
point. No one cares about the club tournament
you won ten years ago. Showing that you are
well organized and sincere can go a long way in
making sure that your letter doesnt end up in the
trash can.
If you are selected as a feld staff representative
be very honest with the company. If a bait is not
working like you think it should, offer input that
will improve its performance. Companies want to
hear the bad as well as the good and it will add
value to the eventual selling of a better product.
And always do your best to promote the product
honestly to the public.
Being a feld staffer can be lots of fun and
being involved in the testing and development
of the baits can be quite satisfying. But the real
advantage is the close association you will have
with some of the greatest folks in the world -
members of the fshing tackle industry. Good

Valentines Day is reminder to prune roses
Mid February is the best time to prune roses in East
Texas. Pruning removes excess growth and prevents the
plant from being choked with inferior and ineffcient
growth. Pruning increases fowering , keeps plants
healthy, and directs the growth where you prefer.
Roses that bloom only once a year in the spring are
not pruned until after they have bloomed, otherwise
it will not bloom this year. But, in general, most roses
should be pruned in mid-February.
Any job is easier with the right tools:
Bypass pruners (sharp) Leather gloves
Long sleeve shirt (welder shirts are great)
Loppers-large or small (sharp)
Pruning saw (folding)
Hedge clippers (electric or manual)
Kneeling pad
Can you plant cuttings to grow more roses?
Yes, and no. If the rose is grafted, cuttings will
produce an inferior, weak bush. If the rose is not
grafted, you can grow more of the same roses from the
cuttings.
Just push the cuttings into moist sandy soil in a
protected area, and keep moist until rooted. A rose is
under patent for 17 years from date of introduction
and cannot be propagated for sale.
How to do it:
Using bypass pruners or loppers, remove dead
wood, and dying or unproductive canes. If center of
cane (pith) is dark, cut lower until you see lighter
pith. Remove crossing branches to prevent rubbing,
which injures both canes. Removing one will save the
other. Remove branches smaller than the diameter of a
pencil, unless it is a young bush or has only thin canes.
Thin branches in the center to improve air circulation
and sunshine. Prune to shape and reduce size of bush
to produce more blooms. Prune at least one-third of the
bush for most roses.
Hybrid Tea roses need more severe pruning to
produce those beautiful long stemmed blooms. The
goal is to save the healthiest and strongest canes. An
average size Hybrid Tea bush can support as many as
fve main canes, but, smaller bushes may have only
two to three canes. The healthiest canes are bright
green; older canes are grey or brown.
Most Hybrid Teas need a fnished height of 18 to
24. When pruning, look for an outward facing bud eye
on the cane at about 18 to 24 high. A bud eye is the
pink bump where a leaf is (or used to be) on the cane.
This is the point from which new growth emerges.
The direction in which the eye faces is the direction
a new rose stem will grow. Since you want the inside of
the rose bush open, cut where eyes face outward; cut at
a 45 degree slant away from that bud eye, one-quarter
inch above it.
Larger canes may require loppers. Make cuts
smooth and quick. If a cane splits, apply school glue to
cover the injury. When all canes are pruned to desired
height, strip off any remaining leaves.
Prune miniature roses unmercifully! Shear the
mini to about 6, clean out dead wood and shape bush
to a mound. If it looks too dense, lift out of soil with
a garden fork, shake soil from roots and divide plant.
Replant one division and share the other with a friend.
Climbing roses are handled differently. Choose
a few main canes and prune lateral branches along
length of canes down to two leafets. Loosely tie the
canes in an arch shape to a support such as a fence
or trellis. By tying the cane down in an arch, the rose
bloom all along the cane instead of just the tips.
When done, clean debris around bush including old
leaves. Burn or dispose of this without composting, to
keep from spreading any rose disease. Spray pruned
bush and ground beneath with a dormant oil available
at most garden centers. A fungicide or insecticide may
be added to the dormant oil mix.
Now is a good time to start your roses off on a
good growing season with organic fertilizers to enrich
the soil. Feed each bush: 2 cups alfalfa pellets, 1 cup
cottonseed meal, 1 cup fsh meal, cup Epsom salt
and composted manures. This recipe may be added
again in August. These organics may be purchased at
feed stores. A timed release fertilizer such as Osmocote
may be added, also. Do not add granular fertilizers
now; wait until the frst blooms appear.
Water your roses if necessary and plan to soak them
at least weekly throughout the growing season.
All roses love a thick mulch around their roots.
Pine straw is best because it is slightly acidic (roses
like a 6.5 pH), and free in our area. Mulching retains
moisture, insulates tender feeder roots and cuts down
on weeding. Apply at least 4 to 6 of pine straw around
each large bush.
All this hard work pays off in a few weeks, as soon
as late April will be the Spring Flush of gorgeous
blooms to enjoy and share with a friend. Everyone
loves roses!

GEARING UP TO GO
GEARING UP TO GO GEARING UP TO GO
DEEP CYCLE BATTERIES
Battery problems can ruin a fshing trip and drive a tournament
fsherman absolutely bonkers! Ill be talking about your troll motor
batteries but some of the information will also apply to the cranking battery.
I have troll motors brought into my store every week with anglers
thinking they have troll motor problems. Then after checking out the troll
motor, I fnd they have a battery problem. After the anglers took the time to
remove the unit from the boat and bring it into the shop they are not real
happy that they wasted their time. For example, the batteries have been
setting up for a couple of months not being used in the winter.
You get your boat ready, put your batteries on charge and head to the
water. This is when a problem shows up. Most people know about voltage
testing a battery but this does not give a true story about the battery. The
best way to have a battery checked out is to have it load tested. This load test
will give you the true condition of the battery. Your battery must be fully
charged for an accurate load test. You should have the load test done by
an authorized battery shop not just a place where batteries are dropped off
and sold. A deep-cycle battery is a lead-acid battery designed to be regularly
deeply discharged using most of its capacity. In contrast, starter batteries
(e.g. most automotive batteries) are designed to deliver short high-current
bursts for cranking the engine, thus frequently discharged of only a very
small part of their capacity. While a deep-cycle battery can be used as a
starting battery, the lower cranking amps imply that an oversized battery
may be required.
A deep-cycle battery is designed to discharge between 50% and 80%
depending on the manufacturer and construction of the battery. Although
these batteries can be cycled down to 20% charge, the best lifespan vs cost
method is to keep the average cycle at about 50% discharge, as there is
a direct correlation between depth of discharge on the battery and the
number of charge and discharge cycles it can perform. The structural
difference between deep cycle batteries and cranking batteries resides in the
lead battery plates. Deep cycle battery plates have thicker active plates, with
higher-density active paste material, and thicker separators. Alloys used for
the plates in a deep cycle battery may contain more antimony than starting
batteries. The thicker battery plates resist corrosion through extended
charge and discharge cycles.
A charge cycle is the process of charging a rechargeable battery and
discharging it as required into a load. The term is typically used to specify a
batterys expected life, as the number of charge cycles affects life more than
the mere passage of time. Discharging the battery fully before recharging
may be called deep discharge; partially discharging then recharging may
be called shallow discharge.
We should routinely do a visual inspection of the battery terminals
to make sure there is no corrosion build up that would cause a bad
connection. A bad connection creating a loss of power could be the reason
for the troll motor or your electronics to perform badly. Good Fishing
