THE imminent opening of
Sainsburys on the corner of
Faulkner Street and Charles Street
has caused concern locally. Many
people fear that the stores arrival
could threaten the smaller shops
which make Hoole so special. Weve
got peoples views in this months
edition.
Weve also got the Backyard column,

Some thoughts about Hoole by Andy Medcraft
Tawing out under
the Co-op heater!
E
vEry year its the same. We reel of lists of
resolutions or we advertise our abstinence from
anything that could be seen as weakness when
we know well fail by February. I know Ive got to
make changes. I took a how happy is your life? test in
the back of a magazine I found in the staf room. Its
possible that I missed scored myself but it turned out
I am borderline manic depressive. Te rescue remedy;
I need to lose 12 stone, buy a two piece bikini in
apricot, bake cup cakes, ditch my job, take naps and
move to a tropical country. Call me pessimistic but
that just isnt achievable not without drastic surgery,
a shed load of hair removal cream, the box set of the
Great British Bake Of and a Lotto win.
Last year I was foored with fu and I saw in the New
Year with a blackcurrant Beechams and duvet, stood in
the backyard watching the wish lanterns carrying the
hopes and dreams of Hoole residents to somewhere where
they sometimes come true.
I am not as poetic now that January has kick started
my 2012. I step on the scales and Im exactly one stone
heavier than this time last year. Could I squeeze into an
apricot bikini? No chance. Not even a pair of Speedos.
(Te thought of later making the apricot bikini slightly
more masculine)
I managed a marble cake in October but with my
better half shedding weight like a tree sheds its leaves in
autumn, the temptation of cake was an evil for which the
sense of guilt resulted in me consuming all but the one
slice.
I polished the CV and put it out there among the
millions of others, all desperate to secure a long term
relationship with an employer that pays just enough to
put bread on the table. In the meantime, I embrace that
fact that I am lucky to be employed at all and keep myself
busy, thankful for my daily bread.
Heat
Te move to a hotter climate is something that doesnt
really appeal. Its taken me 30+ years to fnd home so
to up sticks and leave now that a womans magazine
has branded me unhappy in life is a ridiculous idea.
Especially when the cover star was Kardashian and I still
have no idea what a Kardashian is.
Te temperatures outside are hitting the below zeros,
threatening to freeze our pipes, interfere with our
central heating and render us layered in woollens but
it brings us together. I stand under the heater in the
Coop, pretending to look at the sandwiches along with
three or four others all with the same idea. We thaw
together, stamping our feet and comparing our near arctic
experiences. Te bloke thaws his gutters with a hair drier.
Te woman brings her plants indoors every winter. Tose
she cant carry are swaddled in bubble wrap to protect
them from the frost. Te young lad tried to de-ice his
windscreen with boiling water and sufered at his obvious
mistake but we do not scof. We laugh with him before
moving on to purchase our goods, wishing each other
a happy new year. Te sense of community re-instated.
I smile. Not like a grinning fool but a warm smile that
makes me realise life isnt that bad.
So, maybe its not eternal happiness I need to fnd this
year. Its tolerance. Te things that grate on me need to
become the things I can tolerate. A prime example being
the x-rated tirade of abuse that flled my car as I was
subjected to the driver in front rounding invisible objects
and hitting the breaks so often it was like following a
mobile disco to the instant obliteration of any anger
when I realised the driver was a friend instant tolerance.
Im ready to tolerate the cold. Te people who park on
the pavement along Faulkner Street and open their doors
into me. Te glass recycling bags that never seem to fnd
their way back to my backyard. All the things that annoy
me on a daily basis. Instead I am going to embrace them
along with all the things that make me smile. Te stone
baked pizzas at the Faulkner. Te banter with blokes
outside the Brom. Te smell of fsh and chips on a cold
night. Te church bells on a crisp morning. I pledge that
2012 will see me tolerate so much more. I will become
a glass half full rather than a glass half empty person.
And, apart from the obvious tests to my improving level
of tolerance (the weekly bag of dogs mess in the back
alley and the possibility that Sainsburys is going to rip
the heart out of our community) I going to go one better
than a half full glass. I am going to ensure that my glass
is gold plated with a permanent refll. Happy New Year
Hoole.

HOOLE RANGERS FC
New signings bolster squad
HOOLE Rangers resumed their league fxtures on 7th January after an extended fve-week
Christmas break, mainly caused by bad weather. The 1st team started with two diffcult games
against teams near the top of the league. The frst, against Tarvin was at home and ended in
a 2-2 draw, the following week we travelled to Cross Foxes and lost a very competitive game
by 5-2.
This was not the restart we were hoping for, but the new signings have been introduced into
the squad and there is much optimism that we can go from strength to strength over the
remaining fxtures, and have set a target of 4th place or better this year. If we can keep the
squad together, we are sure we will be pushing for honours next season.
Reserves
The reserves will also beneft from the new signings, and despite two defeats in January,
3-2 against Chester Celtic, and 5-1 at home to Raby Villa, the games are getting much more
competitive and we are sure we are now close to having a team that can compete at this
level. The team spirit remains exceptional and despite the disappointing results, the desire to
play and improve is great to see.
Unfortunately, Alan Ryan, the 2nd team manager and part time player has left the club due
to family commitments. Alan will be sorely missed as he was very popular with all his players,
and gave great support in his role as committee member. We hope to see him back at some
point in the future. neil Cawley, assistant to Alan, has now taken over as manager.
We continue to train during the week. At the moment it is on Tuesday from 8.30 to 9.30pm at
Blacon High School on the all-weather pitches. Any new players who want to come down to
training, please contact us and we will advise when and where the training will be held.
THE burnt out Chester Enterprise Centre is
likely to be demolished but there is still no word
on what will become of the site afterwards.
The Enterprise Centre, which was home
to over 50 businesses, including the Hoole
Roundabout, went up in fames in December
2010.
Cheshire West and Chester Council now
wants to demolish what is left of the building
and has ruled out putting up a replacement.
One suggestion for the site is a big car park.

THERE is concern among traders in
Hoole that the Sainsburys store which
is to be opened soon could take a chunk
out of their business.
The fear is that the major retailer will
potentially take trade away from the small
shops on Faulkner Street and Charles
Street.
Plans for the new shop front were approved
at the former Peters hi-f shop, which sits
vacant on the corner of Faulkner Street and
Charles Street were approved by Cheshire
West and Chester Council at the end of
november.
The retail giant did not require planning
permission to change the use of the
premises, so the decision was made by
council offcers.
One trader told us: This is going to be
really bad news for us. Trading is tough
already and the last thing we need is
someone like Sainsburys up the road.
I foresee a few of us struggling to carry on,
particularly as they will most likely be selling
everything in that store.
Hoole resident Dennis Greenald was
concerned that the decision seemed to be
rushed through with little consultation.
I didnt even realise it had gone through,
he said.
Its a big development which is going to
make life diffcult for every business in the
area. There could be lots of local small frms
pushed out.
Views
Heres a selection of comments from
people on the Cheshire West and
Cheshire Council planning website.
One objector Stephen Harris said: This
application which I believe undermines the
core values of Hoole - namely that of its
local, traditional, community
feel.
The Hoole shops in and
around Faulkner Street are
something Chester should
be very proud of and they
compare favourably with
the likes of notting Hill and
other UK treasures where
independence and traditional
values take priority.
I believe that a signifcant
number of existing business in
the surrounding streets will be
threatened with closure due to
decline in revenues including
two existing butchers,
fshmongers, grocers, wine
Fears for Hooles unique identity as
retail giant prepares to move in
merchants, forists and local newsagents.
With a Sainsburys store only a short
distance away, I cannot understand
what the store can add to Hoole except
disruption to the community and
disruption for existing stores.
Anna Marie Murray added: Hoole
provides a village-like lifestyle and offers
variety and uniqueness. This is what
local residents and visitors to Hoole
value. Having a major supermarket in
the business area breaks this mould and
detracts from the very uniqueness that
attracts customers in the frst place.
John Rogers said: We all know that
once a supermarket gets into an area
like Hoole it will cause local shops to
close down eventually given its superior
price competitiveness.
Steve Howe, from Lime Grove, added
his voice, saying that traffc would also
be increased along an already busy
street. He said: This, I feel, will increase
traffc congestion and will present a
threat to existing businesses.
There are already three convenience
stores with a minutes walk of the site.
Adding a fourth seems absurd.
There are already a large number of
alcohol retailers within a short distance of
the site.
CWAC needs to be promoting diversity
in communities such as Hoole Shopping
Village!
Andreas Vogt said: Faulkner Street is a
quaint old-fashioned high street occupied
by small individual shop all of which would
suffer if another big supermarket chain is
allowed to set up camp.
No reply
We contacted Sainsburys for a response,
but at the time of going to press no one
replied. The Hoole views echo those of a
number of provincial streets up and down
the country.
A Sainsburys spokesman, in reply to
another campaign in Oxford, said We
believe the new convenience shop will be
of great beneft to the area, by improving
shopping choice and regenerating
previously vacant units.

FEBRUARy FLoWERS
GardeninG by Janet HeatH
February can be a month of contrasts
ranging from severe cold to balmy sunny
spring weather. Whatever the
weather, you should fnd
hellebores, snowdrops and
crocuses fowering with
the promise of spring
around the corner.
Winter fowering
clematis such as
Clematis armandii
or Clematis cirrhosa
varieties may be starting
to fower now. Large
plants can be pruned by
cutting back old wood to
large buds and removing
weak or older shoots whilst
leaving newer growth.
For those who are keen
to grow vegetables now
is the month to get your
seed potatoes and set
them out in seed trays in
a cool light place to chit.
This starts the new shoots
growing ready to plant out
in March. If you want lovely
new potatoes in June,
then choose a frst early
variety such as accent
or for later, try Kestrel.
you can also warm
the soil where they are
intended to grow by
covering it with black
plastic. This will raise
the temperature of the soil
slightly and you can plant
the potatoes through holes cut
in the plastic. another growing
method is to plant 3 seed potatoes in a large
robust plastic bag situated outdoors, in which
you have placed potting compost such
as John Innes No 3. as the shoots
grow up, add more compost
and keep well watered then
be ready to harvest when
the frst fowers grow. You
can buy potato planting
grow sacks or kits if you
do not have enough space
in the garden to grow
potatoes.
by late February you can plant
seeds of tomatoes, cucumbers
and peppers indoors and get
the seedlings growing ready
for transplanting into a
greenhouse or outdoors
in sheltered spots. I grow
tomatoes outdoors and
fnd that they do ripen by
the early autumn if you
are prepared to wait. you
can continue to ripen green
tomatoes indoors in October
provided they are in a warm
place. My favourite varieties
are Sweet Million for tasty
cherry tomatoes, Outdoor
Girl or for a change of
colour any of the yellow
varieties. There are some
tomato varieties that do
well in pots or hanging
baskets such as Tumbler,
Tumbling Tom (red and
yellow) or Garden Pearl so
try planting a tomato in with
your petunias this year!

QualitySolicitors Oliver & Co.
in the third century, the roman empire was becoming
diffcult to defend and the Emperor, Claudius II, needed more
soldiers. He tried to recruit new men, but faced an obstacle in
the young wives of his soldiers, who begged their husbands
to stay at home rather than fght. So Claudius decided to
forbid marriage. Gloom descended on the city but there
was a priest who disagreed with the emperors decree
and married young lovers in secret. Morale in Rome
was restored but Claudius realised that his plan wasnt
working. It didnt take him long to fnd out why and on
14th February AD 270 the priest was executed. His name
was Saint Valentine - the friend of lovers.
We have lost the reference to the saint and 14th February is now
known world-wide as Valentines Day. Celebrating it is becoming
unavoidable and compulsory, which can be very hurtful for those
who are single and offends those who wish to defend singleness as
an acceptable lifestyle. Valentines Day is also becoming increasingly
sexualised, losing the innocence it once had. a further concern is that
much of the commercial and media attention is shallow. beneath
the surface is an expectation that, at best, romance will turn into
humdrum marriage and at worst, it will all end in tears.
We should rejoice in romance, affrming the goodness and ultimate value of love between man
and woman. romance is also a serious thing. For a couple to enter into a romance is to start that
cautious walk together that may lead to the lifelong spiritual, psychological and physical union of
marriage.
We need to encourage restraint in romance. This may seem to fy in the face of affrming romantic
love. but we protect the things we value. because we think romance is good and valuable it needs to
be guarded. The bible is clear that romance should be protected by boundaries; it is too important
to be treated lightly and, under the wrong circumstances, is capable of inficting enormous harm.
This year as we celebrate Valentines Day remember that love actually is more of a choice than
a feeling, Of course, there is a feeling we call love, and its a wonderful feeling, too. People write
songs and poems about it; Hollywood flm stars appear in movies about it, and it sells millions of
pounds worth of magazines, valentine cards and paperback books. but recently I read this There
are lots of songs about falling in love, and there are lots of songs about falling out of love, but there
arent many songs about just being in love, and all the ups and downs of it, how you make it last
forever. Love in a marriage or any long term relationship needs to experience romantic love but it
is built upon the foundation of committed love where we make choices to work at the love we have,
even when we dont feel we are in love. Lets use this years Valentine to renew our commitment to
work at being in love so that the relationship we are in can last a lifetime.
Lets celebrate romance throughout the year. Romance and marriage are among the building
blocks of society, the foundations on which our culture stands. undermine them and you can
say goodbye to any sort of stable social order. romance is worth redeeming, and not just on St
Valentines Day.
