Concerns on CSP technology

Achieving dispatch ability and bringing the technology at par with base load power plant (24 x 7 operation). Minimizing yearly day and night cycles by application of solar thermal storage, load balancing, reduction in steam flow variability by load adjustments. Achieving quick start ups at minimum load and low steam conditions Improving solar energy and solar steam output, cycling conditions with fine tuning and optimizing solar block efficiencies. Optimization of thermal storage with focus on extension in operating hours, buffering low solar and cloud cover period, stabilizing steam flow and energy output from turbine Minimizing auxiliary consumption by optimizing night operations Reduction in no. of start-ups and shut downs. Reduction in daily cycling with low and minimum load Optimization of annual power production

Solutions and gains

To increase the efficiency of solar power and make it competitive, the concept of solar thermal storage and CSP hybrid power plant is gaining momentum By combining solar thermal energy with conventional thermal energy, the plant can be treated as base load station at all times while solar power can be used to reduce the consumption of fossil fuel and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. One promising solution is the hybrid solar thermal power plant instead producing solar power only, the energy coming from the s olar field is used in improving the efficiency, in a operating thermal power plant. CSP technology had matured but concept of hybrid and ISCC is still young. Few demonstrations have been carried on solar boost in existing coal based thermal power plants.

Merits, advantages and limitations

Hybrid with coal and gas including augmentation of existing coal / gas plants

Limited solar contribution to existing capacity only up to 10 15 % possible No cost involved in transmission system and separate power block Reduced capital cost for improved high capacity factor Low-risk and do not require very large solar-field for a given CSP plant capacity Hybridization will produce CO2 due to the combustion of natural gas / coal The operations of hybrid systems not limited with the storage capacity

Examples of solar boost hybrid plants

75MWe (peak) solar boost through Parabolic Trough field at 3,705MWe CCGT plant in Florida, USA is operational since 2010. The plant is largest CSP hybrid plant worldwide where steam from solar field is further superheated in HRSG downstream the gas turbine. Compact Linear Fresnel field provides solar saturated steam at 2700C, 55 bar to HP feed water Heater at 4 x 500 MWe coal fired power station in the Hunter Valley, NSW. The system is in operation since 2008 with additional 9.3 MWth Solar field extension plan under completion.

44MWe (peak) solar boost through Fresnel field is progressing at 750MWe coal fired power station, Kogan Creek, QLD when superheated steam is injected into the Cold Reheat Line of the power station. Completion scheduled for 2013

Areva's CSP solar boost application

CLFR CSP Solar steam generators increase the quantity of available steam for natural gas-fired, coal-fired, waste heat recovery power plants. This solar steam enables power plants to increase electricity production, reduce fuel consumption, supports peak loads and reduce plant emissions. This application can be used to extend plant life for biomass, waste heat recovery or geothermal facilities. This technology produces direct solar steam for diverse process steam applications, ranging from enhanced oil recovery and mining, to food processing, and desalination. It integrates simply with conventional steam systems in retrofit and new plant designs

OPPORTUNITIES
FUTURE PROSPECTS AND MARKETS

Both hybridization and thermal storage options will continue to offer a contrasting range of advantages and disadvantages - but as fossil fuel prices go up and PV prices continue to fall, fossil fuel resource scarcity and environmental concerns will place an upward pressure on hybrid system energy prices.
On maturity of thermal storage options and costs decrease I expect dedicated, 100% solar systems will dominate CSP deployment. ISCC systems will remain a good option, but are limited to sunny sites with big gas combined-cycle plants feasibility.

SOLAR POWER TECHNOLOGY

SOPOGY and AURA DEMONSTRATED a new approach to Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) called MicroCSP, a highly modular and scalable technology that is particularly suitable for distributed generation and solar boost to existing systems in the range of 250kW 10 MW. MicroCSP technology also incorporates several design and manufacturing innovations that dramatically reduce the cost and increase the flexibility of concentrating solar energy applications. MicroCSP and Photovoltaic (PV) technology both play important yet different roles in addressing the climate change problem. PV converts sunlight into electricity at an efficiency around 15%. MicroCSP converts the sun heat into thermal energy at an efficiency around 50%. Sopogy's MicroCSP products are flexible in use and can be installed for use in Solar boost, Power Generation, Air Conditioning and Process Heat applications.
