DEFININGCHARACTERISTICSOFTHECURRICULUM
Inordertobestunderstandthefollowingsyllabithefollowingdefinitionsofthecharacteristicsofthe curriculumofferclarification: TheUCLACESARCHAVEZ/SPARCDIGITALMURALLABANDLARGESCALEIMAGING COMMUNITYWORKSHOPIS: 1. Activistandproblemsolving.Visualartincludes,butismorethan,expression;ithasa crucialroleincommunitybuilding,problemsolvingandchangingperceptions.Inrecentyears, publicandcommunitybasedartworkshavefiguredsignificantlyingivingvoicetopeoplewhohave fewalternatives 2. Projectbasedandproductdriven.Studentswillidentifyanddevelop Theirowncommunitybasedprojectswhichwillallowforadiversityofskillsandconcept development,includinganalysisandcritique.Sinceprojectsareultimatelyproductdriven,the workshopwillmorerealisticallyapproximatetheenvironmentinwhichstudentswillworkas professionals. 3. Learnercentered.Byitsverynature,artmakingmustbegroundedinthecuriosities, interestsandpassionsofthecreator.Studentswillbeencouragedtodevelopartoutofacomplex relationshipbetweenidentity,empathy,communityandtheneedtoexpress. 4. Collaborative.Studentswillbeencouragedtodevelopmultipleapproachestoartmaking andacademicresearch,fromsolitaryproductiontocollaborativeinteractionwithotherstudents, withcommunitymembersandwiththeiraudiences.Thenatureofvisualartascommunication requiresaflexibleapproachtoprocess. 5. Interdisciplinary.Todaysart,indeedtodayswork,isprofoundlyinterdisciplinary,not onlyintermsofmediainthiscasetheintegrationofbothhandgeneratedandcomputergenerated imagesbutintermsoftheinformationitdrawsuponandthepartnershipsitforms.Artistswork withurbanplannerstotransformneighborhoods.Theyworkwithchurchesandcitycouncilsto developasenseofcommunity.Themandateforinterdisciplinaryinquiryprovidesstudentswitha uniqueenvironmentinwhichtoworkwithstudentsinfieldsotherthanthearts. 6. Diversityoriented.Inthevisualartsfield,understandingculturaldiversityandrelated questionsofidentity,audienceandmeaningformsabaseoftheoryandpracticethatisfundamental toacurriculumofthisnature.WorkshopparticipantswillexaminecurrentEurocentricnotionsof artandartmakinginthecontextofmultiplehistoriesandwaysofseeing.Studentswillengageina multiculturaldiscoursethatacknowledgesthevaluesandexpressiveformsthatcomefromdifferent culturalheritages. 7. Technologicallysophisticated.Recognizingthattheimageisnolongersimplyor exclusivelygeneratedbyhand,theWorkshopwillprovidestudentswithnotonlyskillstraditionally associatedwithvisualartmaking,butalsothoseofferedbymultimediatechnology.The interdisciplinarylinkingofvisualarts,publicartsandtechnologywillhelpstudentstodevelopa technologicalskillbasethatwillallowthemtobecompetitiveaspracticingartists,educators, sociologists,politicalscientists,historians,etc. 8. Reflective.Todaysvisualartistsmusthavetheabilitytoreflectupontheirownworkand thatoftheircontemporaries,toanalyzetheeffectsoftheirwork,andtocontinuethecritique processbeguninschoollongaftertheyareworkingontheirown.Withthechangingnatureofart, artcriticismitselfischanging,andcontemporaryartistsmustnotonlymakeartbutalsobeableto speakdwriteaboutit.Thisprocessofcriticalreflectionisthebasisforlifelonglearningandpractice
CURRICULUMSTRUCTURE
Curriculumwillbebasedonathreehourcourseofferedtwiceweekly,takenconcurrentlywitha threehourlabper/weekfortenweeks,andearningeightunitsofcredit.However,becauseofthe timerequiredtodevelopandimplementthecommunityoutreachprocess,aswellastheorganic natureoftheartmakingitselfinstudio,studentsshouldbepreparedtoinvestconsiderablymore than12hoursperweekinordertocompletetheirprojectsbytheendofthequarter.Productionsof largescaleworkrequireatwoquartercommitmentforBeginningandIntermediatecourseswithisa 16unitstotal.Studentsneedtoconsidertheircapacitytocommittothetimerequiredtoseeamural productionthroughfromstarttofinish Artmaking,research,contemporaryculturalandcommunityissues,problemssolvingandconceptual skillsdevelopmentwillbeintegratedwithinthedevelopmentalsequenceofcreating: (1)ResearchandDevelopment; (2)PreProduction; (3)Production; (4)PostProduction;and (5)Distribution. (1) ResearchandDevelopment.Basicskills,bothintraditionalmuralpaintingandcreation ofdigitizedimages;understandingofthegenreofmuralmakinganditsevolutioninMexicoandthe UnitedStates;historic,social,culturalandcommunityandissues;philosophicalconsiderationsinthe realmofpublicart; (2) Preproduction.Developingaconcept,scripting,planning,applyingbasicskillstothe project,designingtheactualproject,researchinvolvingteamwork,layinggroundworkinthe community,includinginterviewswithcommunitymembers,organizationofspeakoutsorpublic forumsasameansofelicitingcommunityinput. (3) Production.Creatingtheartisticproduct.Complexinteractions,skills,production techniquescombinedandappliedtothework. (4) PostProduction.Refinement,evaluation,analysis,meetingwiththecommunityto determineprojectimpactandeffectiveness. (5) Distributioncreatingbroadcommunityawarenessoftheproject,documentingtheproject, publishingtheimpactandresults.
UNIQUECHARACTERISTICSOFTHEWORKSHOP
Theworkshopwillbeuniqueinseveralrespects: (1) Typically,studentsacquiretheoreticalconceptsandhonetheirtechniqueinanacademic settingbeforeventuringoffcampustoapplytheirnewlylearnedskillsinanactualworking environment.Inthealternative,theWorkshopwillbeconductedattheSocialandPublicArt ResourceCenter(SPARC),amulticultural,grassrootsartsorganizationlocatedinVeniceCalifornia. Studentswillhavetheopportunitytolearn,practiceandcreateinaserviceandcommunitybased learningmilieu,whileatthesametime,workingdirectlywithcommunitymembersinselected venuesthatwillultimatelyhousethefinalartisticproduct.ThustheWorkshopwillmoreclosely approximateworkingenvironmentsinwhichstudentsmaybeemployedinthefuture. (2) FundsprovidedbytheUniversityandGrantstoSPARCwereusedtoretrofittheformer policemotorpoolareaofSPARCshistoricartdecobuilding,(formerlytheVeniceCityJail,)creating theUCLACesarChavezCenter/SPARCDigitalMuralLab.TheDigitalMuralLabisacomplete productionandteachingfacility,housinganetworkofAppleworkstations.Togetherwithlocal participantswhowillactasinformants,thestudentswillhelptoarticulatecommunitydefined issues,unearthhistoricalandculturalmaterials,andworkcooperativelytofindartbasedsolutions whileacquiringimportanttechnicalskillsintheapplicationofsophisticatedgraphicprograms, includingAdobePhotoshop,Illustrator,andPainter.Useoftheseprogramswillfacilitatethe replicationofhandpaintedmurals.Combinedphotographicmaterialsandhandrenderedimages canbeusedtoproducethemuralsizeimage,whichcanbepaintedorprintedatanyscale. (3) Theworkwillpreparestudentstoperformwithinahighertechnologyenvironment,andto attainskillsthatwillmakethememinentlymoreemployable.Theartisticandcommercial implicationsofdigitalimagingarefarreachinganddramatic.Newmuralimagescanbecreated digitallyfromdrawingsandphotos,scannedintothesystem,andsuperimposedontopotentialsites. Proposedworkcanthenbeviewedinsitubyapotentialclient,savinghundredsofhoursofstudio timeinhandgeneratedwork.ThenewlycreatedimagescanthenbeprintedFULLSCALE,amethod gainingincreasingcommercialusage.DigitallycreatedfineartsGicleeprintscanbegeneratedeasily andrelativelyquicklyforsalesandmarketingpurposes.Skillinproducingandmanipulatingdigitally enhancedimages,bothbythemselvesandintegratedwithhandpaintedimages,willallowstudents toworkonthecuttingedgeofartproductionandconservationinthetwentyfirstcentury. (4) Teambuildingandcohortcollaborationisencouragedinthemuralstudiosetting.Students areprovidedtheopportunitytoworkwithotherstudents,intergenerationalandcommunity membersinanoncompetitiveenvironment.Throughtheprocessofcollaborationonsharedgoals overatwoquarterproject,importantcohortsaredevelopedandoftenresultinlastingconnections betweenstudentswhohavesharedanimportantcreativeexperienceresultinginapermanentpublic artwork.
