1 November 25, 2011 A Tale of Two Cities Essay Carton is the person who loves Lucie, and Dr. Manette is Lucies father. These two men dont have same relationship with Lucie, but as you know by reading Chapter 13 and Chapter 17, each has three points of similarity. The similarity is how these two character effected by the existence of Lucie, and why it is important because through this similarity, Dickens wants to show the mirror between Carton and Dr. Manette. Also, at the same time, he wants to draw how Lucie effects to them, save them from darkness to light, and show how kind she is. In Chapter 13, the first point of similarity is from the phrase by Carton. He said Self-flung away, wasted, drunken, poor creature of misuse as you know him to be (P. 156 12-13) about himself. He doesnt like the way he is. Second point is from the phrase I wish you to know that you have been the last dream of my soul.(P.156 30-31) and you kindled me, heap of ashes that I am, into fire (P.157 8-9). It means Lucie give him hope. The third point is the last part of this Chapter. He said God bless you."(P,159 7) to Lucie. He wants to be her lover but thinking of Lucies future, he gave up and told her that she should be happy. In Chapter 17, the first point of similarity is from the phrase by Dr. Manette. He tells "I have looked at her from my prison-window, when I could not bear her fight. I have looked at her when it has been such torture to me to think of her shining upon what I had lost, that I have beaten my head against my prison-walls. (P.194 20-24) about his past life. He also spent a hard life like Carton. Second part is from the phrase "You, Lucie? It is out of the consolation and restoration you have brought to me, that these remembrances arise, and pass between us and the moon on this last night. (P.195 18-21) It also expressed that Lucie save him from darkness. Last one is "Lucie, I recall these old troubles in the reason that I have to-night for loving you better than words can tell, and thanking God for my great happiness. My thoughts, when they were wildest, never rose near the

happiness that I have known with you, and that we have before us." (P.196 25-30) It shows that even if she marries with Darnay, he will not feel lonely like before and celebrate her wedding. He also hopes Lucies happiness at first. Comparing two Chapters, at first point, both of them are in the despair of their life. They could not spend their life as they visualized and spent very hard life. However, at the second point, both of them could get the dream or hope from the existence of Lucie. Also, at last part, Carton and Dr. Manette hope Lucie to spend a happy life. They celebrated Lucie and hope her happiness than individual happiness. These are the each three points of similarity between Chapter 13 and 17, and why it is so important because Lucie affects both Carton and Dr. Manette in a same way, saved them from darkness and give them hope. Therefore, Carton and Dr. Manette become the good example of mirror like the other Chapters of this book, and also to emphasis the kindness of Lucie.
