IB INTERNAL ASSESSMENTS for HL MATH INTRODUCTION to PORTFOLIO TASKS Purpose: The purpose of the portfolio is to provide students with opportunities to be rewarded for mathematics carried out under ordinary condition, that is, without the time limitations and pressure associated with written examinations. Consequently, the emphasis should be on good mathematical writing and thoughtful reflection. Students should understand that the pieces of work they produce are for other people to read. The mathematics they write should therefore be clear and logical, and contain appropriate links and explanations.

Objectives: In the portfolio, students will be given an opportunity to show the following objectives, which may not be easily shown on an exam: y y y y y y Appropriate use of notation and terminology Organize data appropriately in graph or tabular form Recognize patterns and make generalizations Demonstrate a knowledge of mathematical modelling Recognize the practical application of mathematics Use appropriate technology as mathematical tools

Requirements: A portfolio consists of two pieces of work based on the syllabus. The portfolio must contain one Type I task and one Type II task to be complete. Type I Mathematical Investigation: This type of task will give students an opportunity to problem solve and formally present the results of their investigation. Students will produce a strategy, generate data, recognize patterns, look at other cases, use technology appropriately, and form, test and justify general statements. Type II Mathematical Modelling: This type of task will give students an opportunity to experiment with mathematics, considering different models and choosing the most appropriate one for the situation presented. Students will translate a real-world problem into mathematics, manipulate data to construct a model, compare models to identify their usefulness, modify or discuss limitations accordingly and use technology when appropriate.

Evaluation: Each piece of work in the portfolio will be assessed according to the following six criteria (maximum score in parenthesis): Use of Notation and Terminology (2), Communication (3), Mathematical Process (5), Results (5), Use of Technology (3) and Quality of Work (2). Please see the accompanying assessment details for specific explanations of the achievement levels for each type of task. Your work will be internally assessed by your teacher, according to the rubric provided by IB. It will count as a TIPS assignment (out of 20) for your course mark. The maximum mark for each portfolio task is 20 and thus for the two tasks, the maximum mark is 40. If a portfolio contains only one piece of work, the missing task is awarded zero. If one type of task is missing (i..e., both tasks are Type I), a penalty of minus 10 is applied. The portfolio is worth 20% of your IB mark and will be made up of your best Type I task and best Type II task. The portfolios of ten students will be sent to an external moderator in April of your graduating year. They will be marked again to ensure uniformity of marking for all IB students.

Guidance and Authenticity: Students are encouraged to ask questions they may have after reading the task and time in class may be devoted to this. They may seek help from their own notes, textbooks, experts outside the school and their teacher if they need clarification or more knowledge. Students are not expected to work in complete isolation on these tasks, but assistance will be given in the form of guidance and not direct answers. Outside of the classroom, students are expected to work independently and not in groups. Students need to be aware that any portfolio work submitted for assessment must be entirely their own. Generally speaking, talking through a task and discussing related mathematical concepts is acceptable. However, it is not acceptable for students to receive written information on specific areas of a task or to have any part of the work completed for them. If students use external sources, they must be quoted properly and be fully referenced with a bibliography and footnotes. To verify that the work submitted is the students own, each task must be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (given with the task). If there is any doubt about the authenticity of the work, students will be asked to discuss the work with the teacher (explaining the method and possibly repeating the task), as well as produce resources and rough work. Submission Requirements: y y y One-sided only; word processed or in ink Order: question sheet, cover page, your work and a certificate of authenticity A photocopy (labelled copy) made before the due date.
