In Sunset Park, Brooklyn, a former loading courtyard is being converted into a festival space designed specifically for the neighborhood's contemporary performance and arts activity. SUPERFRONT launched Public Summer in 2010 in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn as a program for young architectural designers to design and construct a temporary public installation for a local community group. This year Public Summer addresses industrial space, at the scale of both building type and neighborhood. The spatial program calls for a flexible 2,000 sq ft to 3,000 sq ft space for public arts and performance. This ranges from music events with loud speakers and a dancing audience (for Muumbatone, a new electronic music genre) to performances by the Redhawk Native American Arts Council of Sunset Park. Young designers, ie 35 years or younger or within 5 years out of school, are invited to design a temporary structure for this public arts series. Charrette participants will be assigned a program brief on the day of the charrette with parameters for a semi-outdoor space to be managed for public arts and performance activity. The selected team will have the opportunity to construct their design in a 3,000 square foot outdoor space between industrial waterfront buildings in collaboration with SUPERFRONT. Construction will be supported through donated materials from Materials For The Arts, other partners, and novice construction volunteers. Winners will be given an award of $250 and a budget of $1,000 for additional supplies. The temporary outdoor installation will open on July 9th and will run until September 3rd. Designers may participate as an individual or as a team of up to four people. The two-hour charrette is aimed at (though not limited to) young designers five years or less out of school or under 35.
