Pressure Relief Valves

Pressure relief valves are used as a safety device to protect equipment from over-pressure occurrences in any fluid process. Loss of heating and cooling, mechanical failure of valves, and poor draining and venting are some of the common causes of overpressure. The relieving system depends on the process at hand; pressure relief valves either bypass a fluid to an auxiliary passage or open a port to relieve the pressure to atmosphere. Some areas of common usage include reaction vessels and storage tanks. In the Petroleum Refining Industry, for example, the Fluidized Catalytic Cracker (FCC) reactor has several pressure relief valves to follow saftey codes and procedures on such a high pressure/high temperature process. Each of the pressure relief valves have different levels of pressure ratings to release different amounts of material to atmosphere in order to minimize environmental impact.

Here are three examples of pressure relief valves:

Conventional Spring Loaded Safety Valve As the pressure rises, this causes a force to be put on the valve disc. This force opposes the spring force until at the set pressure the forces are balanced and the disc will start to lift. As the pressure continues to rise, the spring compresses more, further lifting the disc and alleviating the higher pressure. As the pressure inside the vessel decreases, the disc returns to its normal closed state. Advantages: -Most reliable type -versatile Disadvantages: -Pressure relief is affected by back pressure -Susceptible to chatter

Bellows Spring Loaded Safety Relief Valve The bellows spring loaded safety relief valve has the same principle as the conventional spring valve, with the exception of a vent located on the side of the valve. This vent lets releases the contents of the valve out to the surrounding environment. Advantages: -Pressure relief is not affected by back pressure -Can handle higher built-up back pressure -Spring is protected from corrosion Disadvantages: -Bellows can be susceptible to fatigue -Not environmentally friendly (can release of toxics into atmosphere) -Requires a venting system

Pilot Assisted Safety Relief Valve The pilot operated safety relief valve is also similar to the conventional safety relief valve except a pneumatic diaphragm or piston is attached to the top. This piston can apply forces on the valve when the valve is closed to balance the spring force and applies additional sealing pressure to prevent leakage. Advantages: -Pressure relief is not affected by back pressure -Can operate at 98% of set pressure -Less susceptible to chatter Disadvantages: -Pilot is susceptible to plugging -Has limited chemical use -Condensation can cause problems with the valve -Potential for back flow

Other Safety Valves

Rupture Disc - A rupture disc (also called a "bursting disc" or "safety disc") is a thin membrane of material (usually metal) that acts as a one-time use pressure relief device. At a critical pressure, the disc will fail and rupture allowing flow and the release of pressure. Often, rupture discs are used as a back-up to a conventional spring-controlled safety valve. Given primary safety valve failure (either no or inadequate pressure relief) the rupture disc will burst open and relieve pressure. Rupture discs are commonly used in chemical process plants and large air-cooled steam condensers. Pressure Vacuum Valves - Pressure vacuum (P-V) valves protect against both over-pressure and under-pressure conditions. They are commonly used in atmospheric storage tanks, to prevent the build up of excessive pressure or vacuum which can dangerously unbalance the system or damage the storage vesse

Summary Tables

The table below shows a list of typical icons for different valves found in industry.

Valve:
Valve is closed parts (ram) along the channel axis of vertical movement of the valve, cut off the pipeline as the main medium used, that open and close use. General, not as a valve regulating flow use. It can be applied to low pressure can also Color Toner be applied to high temperature and pressure, and different materials according to the valve. But the valve is generally not used for the transmission line in the mud, and other media. Advantages: fluid resistance; Kai, closed lower torque requirements; You can use the media to the direction of flow of the two ring road network, which means unrestricted flow of medium; fully open, the sealing surface by the erosion of the working medium smaller than the cut-off valve; relatively simple form, manufacturing process is better; relatively short length of the structure. Disadvantages: larger dimensions and opening height, the required installation space is also large; the opening and closing process, the sealing surface were relatively friction, Wear a larger, even at high temperatures likely to cause abrasions; General valve has two sealing surface, to a processing, polishing and maintenance of some of the difficulties increase; opening and closing a long time.

Butterfly:
Valve is opening and closing parts of reciprocating rotary disc is about 90 to open, close and adjust a valve fluid channel. Advantages: simple structure, small size, light weight, supplies province, not for

large diameter valves; open and close rapidly, small flow resistance; suspended solid particles can be used with the media, based on the strength of the sealing surface can also be used in powder and granular media. Applicable to two-way opening and closing the ventilation pipe and dust regulation, widely used in metallurgy, light industry, power, petrochemical and gas pipeline systems and other waterways. Disadvantages: flow control range is not, when opening up to 30%, the flow will be into more than 95%. the butterfly structure and sealing material limitations, not for high-temperature, high pressure piping systems. General operating temperature below 300 , PN40 below. sealing performance relative to the ball valve, globe valve is poor, it is not very high requirements for sealing the place.

Ball:
Evolved by the plug, its opening and closing parts is a sphere, the use of the sphere around the stem axis of rotation 90 to achieve the purpose of opening and closing. Valve in the pipeline is mainly used for cutting, distribution and change General Electric Transformerthe direction of media flow, the design of the ball into the Vshaped openings also has a good flow regulation. Advantages: the lowest flow resistance (actually 0); not stuck at work because (in the absence of lubricant), it can be * applied to corrosion and low boiling liquids; In the more pressure and temperature range, can be completely sealed; for fast opening and closing, opening and closing time is only some of the structure of 0.05 ~ 0.1s, in order to secure for the test bed automation system. Fast opening and closing valves, the operation no impact. ball off pieces of the boundary position in automatic positioning; working medium sealed in the can on both sides *; in the fully open and fully closed, the ball and seat sealing surface and the dielectric isolation, the high-speed media through the valve will not cause erosion of the sealing surface; compact, light weight, it could be considered for low-temperature media system is the most reasonable valve structure; body symmetry, in particular welded body structure, can well afford to Since the pipe stress; closed off parts can withstand the pressure differential. full welded body ball valves, can be buried underground, so that the valve inner parts from erosion, the maximum life of up to 30 years, oil, natural gas pipeline valve ideal. Disadvantages: because the main valve seat ring material is PTFE, it has almost all chemical substances are inert and has low friction coefficient, stable performance, easy to aging, temperature, and wide range of applications sealing performance of the integrated features. However, the physical properties of PTFE, including the high expansion coefficient, the sensitivity of the cold and poor thermal conductivity,

required seating must be designed around these characteristics. So, when the sealing material hardens, the seal may * to be destroyed. Moreover, the PTFE low temperature levels, only the circumstances under which less than 180 . Over this temperature, the packing material will be aging. Consider the case of long-term use, usually only do not use at 120 . the regulation of its performance relative to the valve to be worse, especially the pneumatic valve (or electric valve). Valve: Is the down part (disc) moves along the centerline of the valve seat. According to this mobile form of valve, valve seat and through the mouth of the change is proportional to the valve stroke. As such the valve stem to open or close the relatively short trip, but also cut-off function is available *, and because changes in the valve seat and valve openings of the trip is proportional valve, is very suitable for flow regulation. Therefore, this type of valve is moved to cut off cooperation or adjustment, and throttle use. Advantages: in the opening and closing process, because the valve flap and valve sealing surface than the friction between the gate is small, and therefore wear. seat channel opening height is typically only 1 / 4, so much smaller than the gate; body and valve is usually only one sealing surface, and thus better manufacturing processes, ease of maintenance. Because of its filler is generally a mixture Distribution Transformer of asbestos and graphite, so the higher temperature levels. Steam valves are generally used cut-off valve. Disadvantages: the medium flow direction through the valve is changed, so the minimum cut-off valve flow resistance is also higher than most other types of valves; the stroke longer than the valve opening speed slow.

Plug:
Refers to the closure of parts into a plunger-shaped rotary valve, rotating through 90 so that the valve openings and the body stuffed in the openings on the interlinked or separately, to achieve a valve open or closed. Valve plug into a cylindrical or conical shapes. Similar to the principle and the ball valve, ball valve is developed on the basis of plug, and its mainly used for oil field exploitation, but also for the petrochemical industry.

Diaphragm:
Is built in the body and the valve cover with a film or a combination of flexible diaphragm, the closure of parts connected with the diaphragm of a compression device. Weir-shaped valve acne can also be a channel through the wall. Advantages: control agencies and media channels are separated, not only to ensure the purity of the working media, but also to prevent the line parts of the media sector the impact of the possibility of manipulation, stem Department does

not require the use of any form of separate sealed, unless the control This is harmful to the medium security facilities for use; As a result of media exposure is only diaphragm and body, both of which can be used many different materials, so the valve can control a variety of ideal working medium, especially for chemical corrosion with or suspended particles in the media. simple structure, only by the valve body, diaphragm and valve cover assembly constituted of three parts. The valve is easy to quickly disassemble and repair, replacement diaphragm at the scene and a short time. Disadvantages: lining due process and the diaphragm valve manufacturing processes and limitations, the larger and larger body lining membrane manufacturing process is very difficult, it is not suitable for larger diameter diaphragm, generally used in the DN 200mm Following the pipeline. membrane materials due to the restrictions, diaphragm valves for low pressure and temperature is not high occasions. Generally less than 180 ; relatively poor performance of regulating only be adjusted in a small area (usually in close to 2 / 3 of the opening, can be used for flow control.)

Safety valve:
Refers to the pressure vessel, equipment or pipeline, as the overpressure protection device. When the device, container or piping inside the pressure rise exceeds the allowable value, the valve automatically opens, then the whole amount of emissions, in order to prevent equipment, container or piping and pressure continue to rise; when the pressure is reduced to the specified value, the valve should be automatically shut down in time to protect equipment, container or safe operation of the pipeline. Steam Traps: The transport steam, compressed air and other media, there will be some condensation to form, in order to ensure the efficiency and safety of the device operation to be discharged in time these useless and harmful media, to ensure that the consumption and use of equipment . It has the following functions: to quickly eliminate the condensation of water; to prevent steam leakage; exclude air and other non-condensable gases. Valve: By regulation, to reduce the inlet pressure of a desired outlet pressure, and according to * the energy of the medium itself, so that automatically maintain a stable outlet pressure valve.

Check:
Also called reflux valve, check valve, back pressure valves and check valves. These valves are * the pipeline flow of the medium itself forces generated automatically Transformer Supplier turned on and off, is an automatic valve.

Check for piping system, its main role is to prevent the media back, to prevent reverse pump and drive motor, and discharge the container media. Check the pressure of which can also be used to exceed the system pressure may rise to the auxiliary system supplies the pipeline. Can be divided into swing (depending on the focus of rotation) and lift (along the axis of movement). The definition of flow coefficient: 1, C: In case the valve fully open, the temperature is 5 ~ 40 of water pressure across the valve is 1kgf/cm2 per hour the volume flowing through the valve (in m3). C is the flow coefficient of the universal symbol of the past long-term use. 2, Kv: the valve is fully open case, the temperature is 5 ~ 40 of water pressure across the valve is 100KPA per hour the volume flowing through the valve (in m3). Kv = 1.01C, present, China is recommended. 3, Cv: valve is fully open in the case, the temperature is 15 (60 degrees Fahrenheit) water pressure differential across the valve flows through the valve per hour for the 1lb/in2 volume (in m3). alve Type Your choices are...

Ball Valves

Ball valves provide tight shut-off and characterizable control. They have high rangeability due to the design of the regulating element, without the complications of side loads typical of butterfly or globe valves. Advantages include ease of operation and high flow, high pressure, and high temperature capabilities. Disadvantages include low cleanliness and an inability to handle

slurries.

Balancing Valves

Balancing valves are mixing valves that maintain a constant water temperature by balancing hot and cold supply lines. They are able to compensate for a pressure drop in either supply line and can maintain a consistent temperature. Balancing valves are sometimes referred to as pressure-balancing valves.

Bellows Valves

Bellows valves have a bellows seal between the media and the valve's bonnet. Bellows valves provide a contaminant-free, positive shut-off for high purity gas / fluid systems.

Butterfly Valves

Butterfly valves control the flow of gas or liquid with a disk which turns on a diametrical axis inside a pipe, or by two semicircular plates hinged on a common spindle, permitting flow in only one direction. They are used as throttling valves to control flow. Butterfly valves offer a rotary stem movement of 90 degrees or less in a compact design. Unlike ball valves, butterfly valves do not have pockets in which fluids may become trapped when the valve is closed. Advantages include suitability for chemical services, small dimensions, and high coefficient of flow. Disadvantages include low cleanliness and the inability to handle slurries.

Cartridge / Manifold Valves

Cartridge valves are directional control valves that are inserted into manifolds to provide a cost-effective, compact system design.

Clamshell / Bin Gate

Clamshell or bin gate valves are used to cutoff, restrict, or control the flow of solids with a disc or gate that swings across the flow path. Some solids valves use inflatable sealing elements to reduce wear while maintaining a good seal. These valves are referred to by a number of names, including swing gate valves, rolling blade gate valves spherical disc valves, and double or single clamshell valves.

Diaphragm Valves

Diaphragm valves are related to pinch valves, but use an elastomeric diaphragm instead of an elastomeric liner to separate the flow stream from the closure element. Instead of pinching the liner closed to provide shut-off, the diaphragm is pushed into contact with the bottom of the valve body. Diaphragm valves are excellent for controlling the flow of fluids which contain suspended solids. They also offer the flexibility of installation in any position. Diaphragm valves are used widely in the pharmaceutical, food processing, and water treatment industries. Advantages include cleanliness and tight shut-off. Disadvantages include low pressure and temperature limits, and multi-turn operation.

Diverter Valves

Diverter valves change the direction of the flow of a medium to two or more different directions.

Double Flap Airlock / Flap

Double flap airlocks, flap valves, louver-type dampers, two-way flap valves, double butterfly valves are used to shut-off the flow of bulk material. The flaps can open sequentially to maintain the airlock between the hopper and conveyor or process unit.

Drain Valves

Drain valves allow the removal of surplus fluid from a system or container.

Directional Valves

Directional valves direct or prevent flow through selected passages.

Gate / Knife Valves

Gate or knife valves are linear motion valves in which a flat closure element slides into the flow stream to provide shut-off. Gate valves are usually divided into two types: parallel and wedge-shaped. The parallel gate valve uses a flat disc gate between two parallel seats, upstream and downstream. Knife valves are of this type, but with a sharp edge on the bottom of the gate to shear entrained solids or separate slurries. Advantages include the ability to cut through slurries. Large sizes are commonly available. Disadvantages include pressure limitations, lack of cleanliness, and low shut-off.

Globe Valves

Globe valves are linear motion valves with rounded bodies, from which their name is derived. They are used widely in industry to regulate fluid flow in both on/off and throttling service. Advantages include precise throttling and control, as well as high-pressure limits. Disadvantages include low cleanliness and the inability to handle slurry.

Iris Valves

Iris valves function like the iris mechanism in a camera. As the valve closes, the material is pushed out of the way. On some iris valves, the mechanical components are enclosed in a flexible sleeve to protect against the ingress of particles.

Mixing Valves

Mixing valves combine the flows of two or more inlets into a single outlet for applications such as temperature or concentration control.

Needle Valves

Needle valves have a slender, tapered point at the end of the valve stem that is lowered through the seat to restrict or block flow. Fluid flowing through the valve turns 90 degrees and passes through an orifice that is the seat for a rod with a cone shaped tip. These small valves are widely used to accurately regulate the flow of liquids and gases at low flow rates. The fine threading of

the stem and the large seat area allow for precise resistance to flow. Advantages: Precise control. Disadvantages: low-pressure limitations, no slurries.

Pinch Valves

Pinch valves include any valve with a flexible elastomer body that can be pinched closed, cutting off flow, using a mechanism or fluid pressure. Pinch valves are full bore, linear action valves so they can be used in both an off/on manner or in a variable position or throttling service. Some typical applications for pinch valves are medical, pharmaceutical, wastewater, slurries, pulp, powder and pellets. They can effectively control the flow of both abrasives and corrosives, as there is no contact between metal parts and the transport media. Advantages: Streamlined flow, high coefficient of flow. Disadvantages: limited materials, low shut-off capabilities, low pressure limits.

Plug Valves

Plug valves, also called cock or stop-cock valves, date back to ancient times, where they were developed for use in citywide Roman plumbing systems. Today, they remain one of the most widely used valves for both on/off and throttling services. Their design is fairly simple; the body is comprised of three main parts: body, cover and plug. The plug is a cylindrical, tapered, or generally cone-shaped device that can be raised or lowered within the seat to maintain, restrict or completely shut off flow. The valve is opened by rotation with the plug itself being the only element that is capable of movement. Advantages: Easy operation, medium to high flow, good shut off. Disadvantages: Low cleanliness, inability to handle slurry.

Poppet Valves

Poppet valves open and close ports with a sealing device composed of a disk, cone, or sphere that is pressed against the seating surface using a spring.

Pressure Relief Valves

Pressure relief valves are self-actuated safety valves designed to relieve excess upstream pressure from the line.

Sanitary / Hygienic Valves

Sanitary and hygienic valves are used in aseptic applications in the dairy, brewing, beverage, pharmaceutical and bio-chemical industries.

Servo Valves

Servo valves provide closed loop flow or pressure response to an electrical or electronic control signal. They are used in air, gas, and liquid applications.

Solenoid Valves

Solenoid valves are electro-mechanical devices that utilize a solenoid to control valve activation.

Spool Valves

Spool valves use a rotary or piston-like spool for actuation. The spool, or

spools, rotate or slide back and forth to block and uncover ports in the housing.

Toggle Valves

Toggle valves are used for on-off control in moderate pressure and temperature applications. They feature a toggle mechanism for valve actuation.
