Winter Orgy Period December, 2011

Thursday, December 1
noon BULB RECORDS ORGY Bulb Records is a small Michigan-based record company that has brought us the musical gifts of Quintron,Flossie and the Unicorns, Mr. Velocity Hopkins, 25 Suaves, and even Andrew W.K. Gather up your tea sets, prepare your glitter glue, and join us in a dance in magical lands, a journey through the mind and senses, and a celebration of the weird and wonderful within all of us. 5:00 am JAZZ SPECTRUM 1:00 pm AFTERNOON CONCERT 6:45 pm HARVARD BASKETBALL Harvard at the University of Vermont 10:00 pm THE HISTORY OF HIP-HOP ORGY

10:00 pm LLWYBR LLAETHOG 1984 was a time when the Conservative government under Margaret Thatcher was felt by some to be waging war on its own people. It was in this decade that the Welsh language was transformed from being simply Europes oldest language and iaith y nefoedd (the language of heaven) into a language that embraced modernity via the activities of a counter-culture embodied within the Sin Roc Gymraeg (Welsh rock scene). We explore the music of Llwybr Llaethog (Milky Way), the band which first wed Welsh language with rap, hip hop, dub reggae, sampling, and cutnpaste after founding members John Griffiths and Kevs Ford were inspired by the 70s dub reggae of Keith Hudson and the DIY freedom of Punk.

midnight MOUNTAIN GOATS ORGY A thorough look at the entire canon of John Darnielles ruthlessly bitter, ever compelling indie band, The Mountain Goats, following the bands trajectory from one-man, lo-fi music recorded with a boom box, all the way to their most recent studio album, All Eternals Deck, released earlier this year. 5:00 am VIENNA PHILHARMONIC ORGY The Vienna Philharmonic is certainly one of Europes finest orchestras, but it may also be the most unusual. The Philharmonics distinct tuning and specialized instruments, including the string instruments that belong to the orchestra and survive each generation of players, have given rise to a distinct Vienna sound that is instantly recognizable and cherished around the world. We explore the evolution of this sound through the orchestras major recordings. The label launched a sect of punk music notable for its frenzied, upbeat attitude and quickly attracted a small, but devoted following. Folk-punk gradually caught on in as far-reaching states as California through touring and mail order records of Plan-it-X bands including Defiance, Ohio, Ghost Mice, Erin Tobey, Andrew Jackson Jihad, This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, and more. Every year these bands gathered in Gainesville, Florida for a two-day fest, drawing crowds from all over the country. Last June the fest sold out the day the tickets went on sale, and once the fest was over, Plan-it-X ceased to exist, ultimately due to an inopportune fire and a subsequent lack of funds despite the popularity. The Plan-it-X orgy commemorates the label, the bands, and the heart.

7:00 pm THE FIVE DAYS OF SPORTSMAS Crimson Sportstalk Season Finale. 9:00 pm BOARDS OF CANADA HAS THE RIGHTS TO CHILDREN Through their few but highly regarded releases between 1995 and 2005, Scottish electronic duo Boards of Canada changed electronica significantly. With three main releases, including the iconic Music Has the Right to Children, and an assortment of EPs, Boards of Canada created the throwback to end all throwback, using the sounds of warped and dying synthesizers and the saccharine-sweet themes of 80s and 90s educational videos to represent either the lost and distant childhood of every kid-at-heart who grew up in the latter decades of the 20th century, or the echoes of a dark, decaying, post-human techscape. Unsurprisingly, this style has bred plenty of imitators and devotees, from the nostalgic folktronica of Bibio to the soundtrack ambience of Ulrich Schnauss to the obliterating techno teeming with faint memories of Clark. We will hear the complete discography of Boards of Canada, along with many of the musical acts who have followed in their footsteps.

5:00 am THE HANK MOBLEY ORGY With his sweet, precise tone and easygoing, melodic style, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley may be one of the most underrated jazz musicians of the hard bop era. One of the original Jazz Messengers, he also notably played with Miles Davis and Lee Morgan. However, hes arguably best known for his work as a frontman, particularly his magnum opus, Soul Station (1960). 11:00 am MEMORIAL CHURCH SERVICE Preacher: Dr. Miroslav Volf, Henry B. Wright Professor of Theology, Yale Divinity School, New Haven, Connecticut. Music will include Victorias Ave Maria and Palestrinas Alma Redemptoris Mater. 12:30 pm LILI AND NADIA BOULANGER ORGY Lili and Nadia Boulanger are two of the best-known women in music of the twentieth century. Born in 1893 in Paris, Lili was the younger sister and a child prodigy composer who won the coveted Prix de Rome at age 19. Her chronic illness unfortunately led to her early death at age 24. Her older sister Nadia, born in 1887, was a musician, composer, and conductor, and later became perhaps the most influential musical teacher of the twentieth century. Among Nadias pupils are Aaron Copland, Virgil Thomson, Astor Piazzolla, Jean Francaix, Philip Glass, and Elliott Carter. We celebrate the sisters compositions and performances, examining each sisters impact on the other and tracing their lives through their music. THE HANK MOBLEY ORGY (cont.) THE BRITISH ART RESISTANCE: THE MUSIC OF BILLY CHILDISH One of the most outstanding, and often misunderstood, figures on the British Art Scene. Billy Childish painter, poet, musician, photographer, film-maker has been one of the most influential and intriguing figures in the British Art Scene over the last 30 years. His musical endeavors have been as extensive as they are formative, ranging from folk to garage punk. Childishs bands include Pop Rivets, Thee Headcoats, Thee Might Caesars and multiple other names of Britains music scene. This orgy is an elegy to Childishs genius, to his musical talents and the art resistance inspired by his amateur ideology. 5:00 am 11:00 pm

Tuesday, December 13
5:00 am FRANZ LISZT ORGY Franz Liszt (1811-86) was one of the iconic figures of 19th Century Europe, a young romantic, an old wise man, a stunning piano virtuoso, and a composer whose music ranged from potboilers to extraordinary explorations of tonality. We celebrate him, as the year of his 200th birthday slips away, with representation of the wide scope of his music and of a number of interpreters. Some works will be heard twice in order to compare performances. The orgy does not aim to present Liszts music complete, for which we would need days more time. Times below are approximate. Liszt: Impromptu (Nocturne) in F-sharp; Horowitz (DG) Liszt: Schuberts song Stndchen (Serenade) transcr. by Liszt; Horowitz (DG) Liszt: Soires de Vienne (Valse-caprice) after Schubert, No. 6 (from Schuberts D. 969, No. 9); Horowitz (DG) Liszt: Soires de Vienne (Valse-caprice) after Schubert, No. 7; Horowitz (DG)

5:00 am CRIME AND PUNISHMENT Blues is known for souls sold at crossroads, as well violence and lawbreaking. Stories of crime and punishment continue to captivate audiences, and they provide a fascinating frame for a survey of blues. This retrospective of Gibbards work goes from the cassette of his first band, Pinwheel, through All-Time Quarterback, The Postal Service, and, of course, the beloved Death Cab for Cutie, to a sampling of their many covers and collaborations.

5:00 am DISINTEGRATION LOOPS On the morning of September 11th, 2001, William Basinski completed the final volume of his Disintegration Loops, a deconstruction of old jazz recordings he made on magnetic tape. Basinski noticed that when he listened to the recordings, the tape players magnet would gradually remove the ferrite from the tape, resulting in a slow disintegration of the sound of the original recording. He recorded hour after hour of that slow destruction. The result is haunting, and only more so today, ten years after 9/11. 10:00 am CARL MARIA VON WEBER ORGY cont. Elverum began making music in his home town of Anacortes, Washington,

and later began releasing albums with K Records of Olympia, Washington, as well as helping other artists recording with K. His raw, emotional brand of rock embellishes the power of his electric guitar and the sincerity of his songwriting. The rest of the artists on P. W. Elverum & Sun follow suit with some of the best and most unpretentious lo-fi rock released in recent years. We showcase the core catalog of these artists in all of its painful, wailing glory, and in addition to P.W. 5:00 am JAZZ SPECTRUM 9:00 am GIAN CARLO MENOTTI CENTENARY At one time, Gian Carlo Menotti (July 7, 1911-February 1, 2007) was the most famous opera composer in America, thanks primarily to two works written six decades ago, The Consul and Amahl and the Night Visitors. In the 1950s, his operas and other music attracted great attention, but in successive years his centrality diminished. He was, of course, a central figure in the two Spoleto Festivals he founded, and his reputation was never fully extinguished, but today few know his music. Although todays tribute is not by any means complete, it touches on many of the highlights. Please note that Amahl will not be heard today, but rather on December 24th at 4:30 pm. 5:00 am JAZZ SPECTRUM 10:00 am NINO ROTA CENTENARY Nino Rota (December 3, 1911- April 10,1979) was famous as a film composer, and although his greatest film work was for the directors Federico Fellini and Luigi Visconti, in this country his best-known work was the music for The Godfather, and before that, for Franco Zeffirellis Romeo and Juliet. Even then, few Americans knew his name. But Rota composed in traditional classical genres as well. This centenary tribute finds continuity in Rotas output of admirable and appealing music. BLUES HANGOVER HILLBILLY AT HARVARD NEW YEARS EVE IN VIENNA 1 pm in Boston is already New Years Eve in Vienna.WHRBs traditional Viennese New Years Eve celebration begins earlier than usual with the Metropolitan Opera, and it will end earlier than usual in order that we may bring you a hockey game from North Dakota. 1:00 pm METROPOLITAN OPERA Strauss, J., Jr.: Die Fledermaus: Marguerite Piazza, Patrice Munsel, Ris Stevens, Charles Kullman, Richard Tucker, John Brownlee, and, as Frosch, Jack Gilford; Eugene Ormandy conducts. (Archival performance from January 20, 1951.) 4:00 pm POST-MET VOCAL PROGRAM (time approx.) 4:30 pm NEW YEARS EVE IN VIENNA (time approx.) WHRBs traditional program of Viennese music for New Years Eve, this year starting and ending early. 6:30 pm SPIKE JONES CENTENARY ORGY Since we have to end our Viennese music early tonight, we thought wed at least start the noisemaking early. Drummer and bandleader Spike Jones was a respected, if not major, musician (e.g., drummer on some of Bing Crosbys sessions) until he turned to comical renditions of popular and classical music. He came along at just the right time, World War II, with a madcap joyousness to help keep spirits up. Spike Jones and His City Slickers became top recording artists, because of the nature of what they did and because of the care, the exacting rehearsal, that Jones insisted on for what ended up sounding like chaotic craziness. Lindley Armstrong Jones was born December 14, 1911 and died May 1, 1965. We celebrate his centenary with a short selection of his finest creations for RCA Victor, from Cocktails for Two, Der Fuehrers Face, and the Dance of the Hours to less familiar fare. 7:45 pm HARVARD HOCKEY Harvard at North Dakota. 10:00 pm THE DARKER SIDE (time approx.) 5:00 am 9:00 am

WHRBs January schedule will follow our normal layout:

WHRB has recently increased its power and made changes to its antenna (as you can see from this picture of workmen on our tower just weeks ago) to bring you a stronger signal. This two-year project involved great amounts of planning, negotiation, FCC application, technical effort, and funding. It was the work of a number of people during this period, but especially of Rick Levy, whose persistence over time and whose long hours made all this possible. WHRB is immensely grateful to Rick for the vast amount of time and expertise he has put into this and many of our projects over the past 35 years. We couldnt be what we are today without his generosity and spirit.
