Calif. 100th Womens Right to Vote Gridley Event, January 27

To honor and celebrate the California Centennial of the Womens Right to Vote, the League of Women Voters of Butte County has secured a traveling California Centennial Exhibit, produced by the International Museum of Women and the California History Center Foundation. It is currently on display at the Gridley Museum on Kentucky and Hazel in Gridley. The League will host a wine and cheese reception and short program on January 27 at the Gridley Museum from 6:30-8 p.m. The event is in partnership with the Gridley branch Library. The Centennial exhibit will remain at the museum, and then will be moved to the Gridley branch library, 299 Spruce Street. In partnership with the museum, on February 12 a tea, movie, and discussion will be held at the library. The exhibit will travel throughout the county through March, 2012, and will be at Butte College for a program on February 23, and then to Chico at the Bell Memorial Union on CSU campus for the remainder of its time in Butte County. Reception times in those venues will be announced in the coming weeks. Please join us in celebration and appreciation of the thousands of women and men who struggled for womens suffrage since the mid-1800s. The county coordinator for this exhibit is Eileen Burke-Trent. To get your organization or school involved, call 846-4444 or email: e.burketrent@yahoo.com The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, political organization that encourages citizens to play an informed and active role in government. For more information about membership in the League, or about any of its education and advocacy programs, please visit www.lwvbuttecounty.org or call 895-VOTE (8683).

Turner National Print Exhibition

The Janet Turner Print Museum, in collaboration with The University Art Gallery at CSU, Chico, and Bell-Carter Olive Company, presents the 9th Biennial Turner National Print Competition and Exhibition. This every-other-year event, always one of the most innovative and engaging exhibitions sponsored by The Turner, opens January 30 and runs through March 4. Since we in Chico are geographically isolated from major metropolitan centers, this exhibition will give us a look at what is new in the printmaking world, not only for CSU, Chico students, but also for those in our community and region who want to see original, cutting-edge art, noted Turner Curator Catherine Sullivan. Presented in two locations -- The Turner Print Museum in Meriam Library, and The University Art Gallery in Taylor Hall -- the exhibition/competition will have a new twist this year. In the past the exhibition/competition was an open affair submissions were accepted from print artists of all levels; a guest juror would then select works that would be used for the exhibit. This time around University curators, interested local printmakers, and the Turner Board of Directors decided to re-focus the aims of the national exhibition and issued invitations to submit works only to emerging artists, those past their academic careers, who are pushing the boundaries of traditional printmaking. Franklin Sirmans, curator and department head of contemporary art for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, viewed more than 260 slides sent in from artists from all over the U.S. He narrowed the submissions down to works by 88 artists from 15 states for the exhibition/competition. The selected works represent the cutting edge of what is happening right now in printmaking, as far as new print techniques, noted Sullivan. Some of the more innovative techniques represented include screen-prints on mylar; letterpress works with laser cuts; etchings on paper with string; and screen-prints made from ash and charcoal. Each curator brings a unique perception to a set of prints, and we are pleased to host Mr. Sirmans and his vast experience with modern art, said Sullivan. Bringing a curator of his national prominence together with a wide array of new work gives us a wonderfully fresh perspective on printmaking. Sirmans will give a talk on February 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Services Center, room 150, on the Chico State campus. The public is welcome to attend, and then view the exhibition at The Turner and The University Art Gallery. An awards reception will be held at The Turner from 6:30-8 p.m. An added benefit of the exhibition/competition is that the best works submitted to the competition find their way into the Turner collection. These Purchase Award works -- works selected as best in the competition by Sirmans are bought by The Turner and added to its prestigious 3500plus collection of outstanding print works. Janet Turner, whose collection began the museum, was always on the look out for new art to broaden the collection, said Sullivan. This follows her philosophy of growing the collection with new and relevant works. In addition, the printmaker whose work wins the major prize, the Friends Award, is invited to give a solo exhibition at The Turner the following year. The Turner Board of Directors and the University gratefully acknowledge Bell Carter Olive Company for their generous support of this exhibition. The Janet Turner Print Museum is located in CSU, Chicos Meriam Library and is open during exhibitions Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The University Art Gallery is located in Taylor Hall, on First Street between Normal and Salem Streets, and is open during exhibitions MondayFriday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday & Sunday, Noon to 4 p.m. More information can be found online at The Turners website, www.turner.org. If you have a specific question about the exhibition, please call 530-898-4476 or send an e-mail to csullivan@csuchico.edu. The website also has information for schools and groups wanting to book docent-lead tours.

Harlem Renaissance Rent Party

The Black Faculty and Staff Association at CSU, Chico, along with The School of the Arts and The Office of Diversity and Inclusion, present the annual Harlem Renaissance Rent Party, Wednesday, February 1 at 7:30 pm on the stage of Harlen Adams Theatre. What is a Harlem Renaissance Rent party? Rent Parties were a way for Harlemites in the 1920s and 1930s to pay their rent. Hosts would hire musicians, cook food and with the proceeds have money to cover their rent. This years Rent Party is a benefit for Safe Place, a Collaborative Response to Violence Project at Chico State and Butte College. The mission of Safe Place is to offer a visible support system for victims of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking through outreach, crisis intervention, advocacy, and educational programming. The Harlem Renaissance Rent Party will be filled with partygoers dressed up as anyone from 1919 to 1929, and prizes will be awarded to those with the best costumes. People are also encouraged to wear their costumes to work that day. Food and music will be provided. The Rent Party, part of Black History Month at Chico State, is a way to celebrate the Harlem Renaissance, said Tracy Butts, Department of English professor and coordinator of the Rent Party event. The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement from the 1920s and 1930s in New York Citys Harlem neighborhood, she said. It gave birth to many mainstream African American writers and musicians. Without this movement literature, theatre, art and politics would not be the same. Cost is $5 at the door. For more information, call Professor Butts at 898-5151.

Health Ofcials Offer Tips to Avoid Norovirus

Winter is the peak time of year for norovirus, an illness that is also referred to as the winter vomiting bug or stomach flu. Butte County Public Health Department has received several reports of increased incidence of gastrointestinal illness in local hospitals, clinics, and long term care facilities. One outbreak in a skilled nursing facility has now been confirmed as norovirus. Norovirus outbreaks tend to peak during the winter months. Symptoms of a norovirus infection can include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, body aches, and sometimes fever. People typically become ill 24 to 48 hours after exposure to the virus, and symptoms usually last one to two days. Noroviruses are present in the stool and vomit of infected people. They are spread primarily through person-to-person contact, or contamination of food prepared by a person who is currently ill or has been recently ill and didnt wash their hands appropriately. The key to preventing norovirus is simple, officials say. Just practice good personal hygiene, observe appropriate food-handling procedures and stay home if you are ill. The main thing people need to do is wash their hands frequently, said Dr. Mark Lundberg, Health Officer with Butte County Public Health. Wash your hands thoroughly and carefully with soap and water after using the toilet, before consuming food, and before preparing food for yourself or others. Good hand hygiene could prevent a majority of the illness caused by these viruses. Part of the difficulty in combating norovirus, Lundberg said, is that people confuse it with other things. The general public often refers to this type of illness as the stomach flu. This term causes much confusion, because norovirus is a completely different virus than influenza and causes a different illness. Influenza is primarily a respiratory illness, characterized by symptoms like high fever, body aches, sneezing, a runny nose or a sore throat. Norovirus is a gastrointestinal illness and can be passed on to others through food, as well as through contaminated surfaces and direct contact. Moreover, while influenza can be prevented with a vaccine, there is no vaccine for norovirus, leaving good hand washing as the primary defense. Precautions that can help prevent the spread of noroviruses include: Wash your hands with soap and water after using the toilet or changing diapers. Wash your hands before preparing or eating food or beverages. Dont prepare food if you have diarrhea and/or vomiting, or for 48 hours after symptoms go away. Promptly clean and disinfect any contaminated surfaces with a bleach-based household cleaner. Stay home if you are ill, and for 24 - 48 hours after symptoms go away. There is no specific drug to treat people with norovirus illness. People who are ill should stay home, rest, and drink plenty of fluids to replace those lost through vomiting and diarrhea. Norovirus usually gets better within 1-2 days. If symptoms do not go away after 2 days, a health care provider should be consulted. People should also remember that they can continue to spread the virus for up to several days after they get over a norovirus infection, Lundberg emphasized. People who are ill do not need to call the health department unless they are reporting an outbreak (multiple persons ill who do not reside in the same household). The public can report suspected outbreaks (not individual cases) of norovirus illness to Butte County Public Health by calling 538-7581 in Oroville or 891-2372 in Chico. Louis here...
Wow, where has the year gone? The holidays are fast approaching, and I cant believe the weather has cooled down. I can now sit in the sun in the mornings and not melt! Thanksgiving is coming soon, and we are going to Alex and Kathis for dinner. They invite me cause they like me. Great folks; they have other friends who like me too, so its a nice evening. I dont have to stay home alone. Winter here in the desert is the best time of year. Warm days, cool nights, and all my friends are back. Dilly comes to see me, Austin, Harley, Kirby, Coco, Bogie and Nikki! Nikki came late this year, cause his mom had surgery and was going thru rehab so they didnt arrive until the 10th of November. Went to play with him, when he arrived. Boy he has grown over the summer and is about the same height as me. We run and roll and have a great time. Mom bought me Christmas presents to give to my friends when they come to visit, I got a snowman for Nikki, a reindeer for Dilly, Santa for Austin and presents for Lizzy and Darcy across the street. They are new to the neighborhood, and they are Welsh Corgis, like the Queen has. The Queen of England that is. Cute, but they bark a lot! I can hear them from my house, and their yard is on the other side of their house. But oh well, thats their thing, not mine. I just sit and watch the golfers come and go by. Bogie is coming for Christmas dinner. He is fun, but sorta snobby, he is a French poodle. He plays with me for about 5 minutes, then he jumps up on his moms lap and ignores me the rest of the time. But he bought me a present, too. A Champagne bottle. Must have known that our family makes Champagne in France. This is fun; it squeeks too! I just gave him a Santa Ball that squeaks. But boy do I have a new batch of toys. My girlfriend Dilly gave me a Gifelte Fish. It is blue and white and when you squeeze it, it says Oy Vey, oy, oy, oy. It is funny. When I got up one morning, there was a bag was sitting by the fence in my yard. Mom opened it, and gave it to me. I immediately buried it. Just the right size for the hole. I just put it in the ground tail up and bury it. Mom gets so frustrated with me do-

ing that, but she is getting better. I need to tell you what I did. Mom planted three planters of owers, that included pansies and petunias and some other red thingy. She put them under the big picture window that was covered in rocks so I cant dig. Well I buried my sh in one of them, then my humpy in another, and my rawhide bone in the third. All in one day. Boy, oh boy did I get in trouble! She even spanked my butt. I stayed under the bed for the better part of the day! She took them out, and had to replant the owers in the dirt. That night they went out to dinner, guess what, I did it again! She walked in the door, and I immediately put my ears back and ran under the bed. She knew I had done something, cause I looked guilty! Well this time I was sent to bed! Mom was really mad this time. This went on for about a week, me burying my toys in her planter and then hiding under the bed. Finally she got the hint. She took the planters out of the yard, put them on the wall next to the pool, and now we no longer have any conicts! Oh, I still bury things, but in the corner by the bedroom, and there are no owers to dig up! Hope you all had a Happy New Year and talk to you soon.
