Written by R.Muhammad Nasrullah 07360180 / A class Muhammadiyah University Of Malang

This semester, I got a Cross Culture Understanding subject which studies about English speaking country culture and all aspects involved in it, particularly, knowledge about how people in English speaking country interact each other based on the culture they have, through manners, habits, customs, traditions, and languages they usually use. This subject has given me a clear statement for a student or person who would like to go overseas to English speaking country, that is to minimize the misunderstanding concept of the culture called culture shock which is always happening to someone who doesnt realize yet about the culture of a country they intend to arrive. Because different pond, different fish. As a student who studies English for second language acquisition in eastern culture, cross culture understanding subject gives five main comparisons that distinguish eastern and western culture in common stated as below. Western Equality Individual Risk Direct Task Eastern Hierarchy Group Cautious Indirect Relationship

By those main differences, cross culture understanding has already played an important role for me to achieve more details about how a culture distinguish each other accurately. Besides, those aspects that Ive got from this subject. Cross culture understanding particularly explains on how people communicate in their daily life, through expression English spoken language which is divided into three objects of the study, they are warning, threatening, permission, order, and inviting expressions.

Spoken language is based on rationale chosen words or expression used in manner such as below. 1. Relation with people means that we have to see the person we intend to talk to, for example : close friends, stranger, even people in authority. The chosen words must be appropriate with the expression we intend to express to people according to the relation itself, is it polite or impolite to say the words. 2. Situation means that how does the situation occur in the place of talk with someone, is the one we intend to talk to in angry, nervous, or even angry. 3. Mood condition means that not everybody is in the same mood when we intend to talk in such a condition, because it always changes all the time and often happen to someone who could be our friends or even stranger we just know. 4. The topic of talking about means that the topic must be precisely the same as the expression comes out of our mind. Some examples of the expressions are : 1. Warning Look out ! Be careful ! Watch out ! - watch out for.. - mind you dont.. - make sure you dont.. - make sure you.. - be careful of..

2. Threatening If I told you once.. Ill give you one more chance.. If you.. you dont..

3. Permission Do you mind if.. Would you mind if.. May I.. - could you.. - could you possibly if..

From all that statement of culture , it can be concluded that culture differences obviously occur in any part of region of the whole world. Which means aspects that differ one person to another due to the variations in the way of thinking, belief, tradition, value, habit, custom, and behavior exist in every single person. In order to achieve the understandable culture, cross culture understanding subject gives the description about how peoples life in any part of the region occur through an appropriate communication.
