Word Alive, which takes its name from Hebrews 4:12a, is the
official publication of Wycliffe Bible Translators of Canada. Its
mission is to inform, inspire and involve the Christian public as
partners in the worldwide Bible translation movement.

Translating Scripture, Transforming Lives
Together with partners worldwide, we serve indigenous people
through language-related ministries, especially Bible transla-
tion and literacy. Our goal is to empower local communities to
express Gods love in both Word and deedfor personal, social
and spiritual transformation. Wycliffe personnel currently serve
globally in more than 1,500 language projects for about 2.6 bil-
lion people. However, about 2,100 minority language groups
still wait for the power of God working through their own lan-
guages. Wycliffe invites you to participate in this effort through

everal years ago, our communications department was looking for
someone to prepare artwork for a new set of blank greeting cards we
wanted to produce. We got wind of the fact that long-time Wycliffe
worker Kathy Haasdyk did watercolour paintings, so we approached her.
Agreeing to the idea, Kathy painted the faces of children belonging to four
unique language groups in Peru, Kenya and South Asia. They are beautiful
creations and the greeting cards that feature them quickly became extremely
popular. Many of you have bought them and our Wycliffe personnel use the
cards to extend thanks to partners who pray and support them financially.
In the childrens faces, Kathy saw a future full of hope, for each will have
the privilege of having Scripture in their mother tongue, the language of their
hearts, for the first time. With help from Wycliffe, a nationally led Bible transla-
tion project is currently in process for each of those people groups.
When I see their eager faces, Kathy says of the children in those paintings,
I think of my own childhood, and of what is still my favourite song: Jesus
Loves Methis I know, for the Bible tells me so. A childs faith may be simple,
but if it is based upon the rock of Gods Word, it is pure gold.
The same principle is true for men and women, as well
as children. So, when we asked Kathy to paint 12 images
for this 2012 calendar issue of Word Alive, her subject
matter appropriately expandedfrom children to
adults, from a few countries to many parts of the globe.
Kathy held a brush for many, many hours during the
past year or so, creating the lovely watercolours you can
enjoy during the months ahead.
Her commitment to this wonderful artwork is
an extension of her service with husband Jerry. The
Haasdyks have been part of the Bible translation team

I
l y a plusieurs annes, notre dpartement de communication cherchait quelquun
pour faire les illustrations dun nouvel ensemble de cartes de souhaits sans texte que
nous voulions produire. Nous avons eu vent que Kathy Haasdyk, une ouvrire de
longue date de la Wycliffe, faisait de laquarelle. Nous lavons donc approche.
Daccord avec lide, Kathy a peint des visages denfants appartenant quatre groupes
linguistiques uniques du Prou, du Kenya et dAsie du Sud. Ce sont de magnifiques cra-
tions et les cartes de souhaits qui les reprsentent sont vite devenues trs populaires.
Plusieurs dentre vous les ont achetes et les membres de notre personnel de la Wycliffe
les utilisent pour remercier leurs partenaires qui prient pour eux et les
soutiennent financirement.
La foi [. . .] Sur le visage de ces enfants, Kathy a vu un avenir plein despoir, car
peut tre simple, chacun allait avoir le privilge de recevoir les critures dans sa langue
maternelle, la langue de son cur, pour la premire fois. Avec laide de la

Kathy a donn des coups de pinceau pendant de nombreuses heures au cours de
la dernire anne pour crer les charmantes aquarelles que vous pourrez admirer tout
au long de lanne qui vient. Son engagement ce magnifique travail artistique est une
extension de son service avec son mari Jerry.
Les Haasdyk sont impliqus dans la traduction biblique depuis prs de trente ans,
soutenant luvre de diverses faons pratiques. Ils ont vcu en Afrique du Sud pendant
treize ans, o ils apportaient un soutien logistique neuf projets de traduction biblique
du Mozambique et un du Botswana. Kathy et Jerry travaillent maintenant avec OneBook
(autrefois Global PartnerLink), un partenaire de lAlliance mondiale Wycliffe qui cherche des
moyens originaux de rallier des Canadiens en vue dquiper des ouvriers nationaux pour
diriger des programmes de traduction biblique qui transformeront des vies. Jerry est vice-
prsident des projets sur le terrain, et Kathy aide la rdaction de matriel promotionnel.
