Executive summary

This paper presents the general overall description of the ac motor controller, working principles of the control unit section, the interfacing of the SPWM gating signals, isolating devices and principle of switching the H-bridge inverter then finally the protection of switches. A large number of fractional-KW ac motors are designed to operate from single phase supply. There are two reasons for use of single phase rather than three phase motors. First, for reasons of economy, most houses, offices and also rural areas are supplied with single phase ac as power requirements of individual load items are rather small. The second factor is the economics of the motor and its branch circuit Single phase motors, especially the squirrel cage induction types are chip, rugged, reliable and long lasting. In contrast to grid connected ac motor drives, hardly variable in speed, power electronics (e.g. the inverter), providing supply voltage variable in both frequency and magnitude, are used to operate ac motors at frequencies other than supply frequency. Rapid development in the field of power electronics (inverter grade thyristor, GTO, thyristor, MOSFET, IGBT, etc) have reached such a stage that variable ac inverter drives are becoming increasingly popular in todays motors drives. Single phase motors find wide use in several commercial and domestic applications like funs, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, other kitchen equipments, tools, blowers, centrifugal pumps, etc. and due to its low cost, reliability and robustness. The main objectives of this project work are: To learn and familiarize MOSFETs for power switching, variable frequency drive which can be constructed and tested, to monitor, to convert v/f and control of single-phase induction motor in Industrial Process Control (i.e. this could be a model that simulates the real work that is performed in process control of single-phase I.M). To learn the design or construct an ac motor controller from scratch with as many base components as possible. To prepare ourselves to demonstrate SPWM operation of the converter _inverter phase of the design, To understand the practical know-how of the

theoretical courses like Power Electronics, Analog and Digital Electronics, Control Systems, Electronic Measurements and Instrumentations, Communication Systems and Electrical Machines which we have studied during our stay.
