In utilitarian terms, people have regarded bamboo as relatively valueless, useful mainly as a primitive construction material, the stuff of throw-away chopsticks or, in the form of tender shoots, as a food. At best, it is known as a material for furniture and handicrafts. At worst, it is rued as a weed. Only from an aesthetic or philosophical point of view has it been deeply appreciated, as an embodiment of exuberant life force and resilience. Recently, however, bamboo in its carbonized form has begun to make a name for itself as the magical ingredient in a new array of highend products, thanks to modern technology. At a Dec. 31 press conference, the government-supported Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and a private company, Taiwan Paiho Ltd., jointly introduced a new textile fiber impregnated with bamboo charcoal. According to Chen Wen-chi, project manager at ITRI's Materials Research Laboratories (MRL), it possesses the multiple virtues of acting as a deodorant and disinfectant while keeping the body warm and promoting blood circulation in hands and feet. Chen explained that the charcoal MRL's technology utilizes is made from the Makino bamboo, or Phyllostachys makinoi, carbonized at 2,800 degrees Celsius in traditional kilns. The core technologies concern the processes for grinding the charcoal into nanometer-scale particles and impregnating them in yarn. According to Chen, although the bamboo-charcoal yarn is characterized by structural delicacy, it is nonetheless highly porous and capable of absorbing large amounts of matter. The special properties of the charcoal powder derive from its efficacy in filtering large molecules and its ability to absorb body heat and transform it into infrared radiation. Since the charcoal is distributed inside fibers rather than on their surface, garments made with bamboo-charcoal yarn can be washed repeatedly without diminishing the efficacy of the carbon powder's special qualities. Cheng Seng-mei, president of Taiwan Paiho, pointed out that Nike Inc. of the United States has designated bamboo-charcoal fiber as one of the materials that it intends to incorporate in products to be introduced this year. Adidas and Reebok are likewise evaluating its applications, he said. Potentially, he opined, the global market for bamboo-charcoal textile products is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Although the cost of textile products made with bamboo-charcoal fiber is about 20 percent higher than that of ordinary products, they will

prove to be highly competitive, particularly in the case of sports and health-related apparel, Cheng opined. Besides supplying bamboocharcoal fiber and textiles to others, Taiwan Paiho plans to test-market its own line of gloves, scarves and socks made of the material at local convenience stores beginning this month. Lai Wen-chang, general manager of Yiching Apparel Co., which specializes in the production of golf wear, said that this month, his company began marketing sports and casual wear made from bamboo-charcoal yarns manufactured by Taiwan Paiho. However, it is too early, he said, to tell how enthusiastically it will be received.
