Physics, Carnegie-Mellon University SECURITY CLEARENCE: Top Secret My career has been diverse with experience that includes basic research, applied research, engineering project management, military exercises, and business vent ures. My research efforts were both theoretical and experimental in nature. This work produced numerous publications, reports, and presentations. During the mos t recent 12 years, I have directed multi-disciplinary research and engineering p rograms that coordinated the work of personnel expert in physics, mathematics, v arious engineering specialties, chemistry, biophysics, and cell biology. During the course of my career I dealt directly with high ranking military offic ers and officials up through the ministerial level in the US and foreign governm ents. On several occasions I have served as an invited speaker at international forums. My foreign experience has been gained in west Europe, the former Soviet Union, and the middle-east. CAREER SUMMARY: Dr. Nicholas has over 35 years experience as an analyst, research scientist, pro gram manager, and corporate officer. He has worked in academia, the private sect or, and as a US government appointee (National Science Foundation). His technolo gical experience is broad including work in underwater acoustics, military appli cations of acoustics, electromagnetism, vacuum-deposited thin film circuits, bio physics, and military technology. He has worked in Europe (Germany, Belgium, Gre ece, United Kingdom), the former Soviet Union (Ukraine), and the Middle East (Sa udi Arabia, Egypt) on a variety of commercial, engineering, and scientific proje cts. Dr. Nicholas is fluent in Greek. He has written numerous scientific papers, technical reports and high-level analyses. He has briefed corporate officers an d high-ranking U.S. and foreign military officers and civilian officials up thro ugh the ministerial level. Dr. Nicholas has been invited to speak at many confer ences. He is presently a Senior Research Associate at the Applied Research Labor atory of the Pennsylvania State University and the Chief Scientist for the Insti tute for Non-Lethal Defense Technologies. Dr. Nicholas has spent the last 12 yea rs directing a variety of engineering and scientific projects. He holds patents for a device able to deposit ultra-thin films in vacuum and a patent for a relia ble perimeter sensor system that detects and localizes intruders. Major Programs: Dr. Nicholas has contributed to a number of major programs. * The SSBN Security program as a senior scientist and advisor to the Program Dir ector at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. His work inclu ded the first low frequency target strength measurements of the quarter scale (K AMPOOPS) model of an SSN. * The Pershing program as Director of Unconventional Warfare Studies. Dr. Nicholas conceived and conducted field exercises in Europe to evaluate the e ffectiveness of countermeasure technologies against the infiltration of deployed Pershing units by Soviet special-forces (SPETNAZ). * US Cooperative Threat Reduction Program: At the request of the Ukrainian Forei gn Ministry, Dr. Nicholas led a team to Ukraine immediately after the breakup of the Soviet Union to provide program planning advice to the Ukrainian government for the elimination of the Ukrainian SS-19 missile complex. In addition his tea

m succeeded in establishing a Ukrainian firm to convert a rocket propelled grena de factory to the production of civilian auto parts. * Senior Program Manager (GS-15) for the Middle East at the National Science Fou ndation. Dr. Nicholas formulated and negotiated the basis for a system of nation al laboratories in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. * US Navy Microelectronics Program. Dr. Nicholas conducted experiments that led to new methods for fabrication of thin-film capacitors. Academic Appointments: Dr. Nicholas has enjoyed several academic appointments te aching physics and mathematics, including adjunct professor at the George Washin gton University, the Morgan State University, and the Pennsylvania State Univers ity. He has also been an invited lecturer at the U.S. Navy War College and the US Army War College. Dr. Nicholas still teaches short courses in underwater acou stics and ASW analysis at U.S. government laboratories and corporate sites as we ll as at foreign establishments. Publications: Dr. Nicholas has written many scientific papers, engineering repo rts, memoranda, and position papers and has conducted briefings to the highest l evels of US and foreign military and civilian officials.
