Notes on setting up an RG-16 (or Effect Gizmo) with an Axe-Fx or other effects processor using the 4-cable method
(This process should work with any effects processor that has an insert or effects loop built-in. The connections and parameters may be labeled differently, but the general principle is the same. Just make sure that the effects patches have the processors effects loop active (unless you intend to bypass your amps preamp).

Setting Levels
In order to get your levels right, set up a patch on the Axe-Fx that has no effects, only the effects loop (FXL) block. Adjust your amp to normal playing volume. Turn on loop 4, turn off loop 5 on the RG-16 and adjust the Axe-Fx input level 1 until the level meter just barely gets into the red when you play hard. Adjust the Axe-Fx output level 2 so that your amps volume level is the same with loop 4 on as it is with loop 4 off. Turn off loop 4, turn on loop 5 and adjust the Axe-Fx input level 2 until the level meter just barely gets into the red when you play hard. Adjust the Axe-Fx output level 1 so that your amps volume level is the same with loop 5 on as it is with loop 5 off.

Modes of Operation
There are a number of different ways you can use the RG-16 to control which parts of the Axe-Fx and your amp are active: 1). Amp only - turn off loops 4 & 5. The Axe-Fx is completely switched out of the signal path. 2). Pre effects - turn loop 4 on, loop 5 off. The Axe-Fx will be placed in front of your amps input. Make sure that your Axe-Fx patch has the FXL block in it. Only the effects that appear before the FXL block will be active. 3). Post effects - turn loop 4 off, loop 5 on. The Axe-Fx will be placed in the effects loop of your amp. Make sure that your Axe-Fx patch has the FXL block in it. Only the effects that appear after the FXL block will be active. 4). Pre and post effects - turn loop 4 on, loop 5 on. The Axe-Fx will be placed in front of your amps input and in the amps effects loop. Make sure that your Axe-Fx patch has the FXL block in it. Effects that appear before the FXL block will be placed in front of your amps input, and effects that appear after the FXL block will be placed in the amps effects loop. 5). Axe-Fx as preamp - turn loop 4 on, loop 5 on. Make sure that the patch does not have the FXL block in it. Your amps preamp will be bypassed entirely, making the Axe-Fx your preamp.
