2009 COURSE PLAN Sem: Odd

PROJECT MANAGEMENT Name of Faculty : Lokesh Payasi Programme : MBA (Batch 09-11) Second Semester

Course Description and Overall Goal

Project management is a carefully planned and organized effort to accomplish a specific (and usually) one-time objective, for example, construct a building or implement a major new computer system. Project management includes developing a project plan, which includes defining and confirming the project goals and objectives, identifying tasks and how goals will be achieved, quantifying the resources needed, and determining budgets and timelines for completion. It also includes managing the implementation of the project plan, along with operating regular 'controls' to ensure that there is accurate and objective information on 'performance' relative to the plan, and the mechanisms to implement recovery actions where necessary. Projects usually follow major phases or stages (with various titles for these), including feasibility, definition, project planning, implementation, evaluation and support/maintenance. This Course has developed in order to plan, co-ordinate and control the complex and diverse activities of modern industrial and commercial projects. All projects share one common characteristic - the projection of ideas and activities into new endeavors. Projects bring together resources, skills, technology and ideas to achieve business objectives and deliver business benefits. Good project management helps to ensure that risks are identified and managed appropriately, and objectives and benefits are achieved within budget, within time and to the required quality. Project Management Objectives Ensure Projects are Delivered within Budget Ensure Projects are Delivered within Schedule Commitments Deliver Quality Solutions

Reduced Errors Improved Effectiveness Appropriate Risk Management and Internal Controls

Continuous Process Improvement via Collaboration Implement Project Communications and Oversight Project management has developed over the years, and involves various activities before a project is completed. Objectives are specific so they are measurable, and although there may be one major project objective, there may be minor objectives throughout the project.

Learning Objectives
The purpose of project management is to foresee or predict as many dangers and problems as possible; and to plan, organise and control activities so that the project is completed as successfully as possible in spite of all the risks. The ever-present element of risk and uncertainty means that events and tasks leading to completion can never be foretold with absolute accuracy. For some complex or advanced projects, even the possibility of successful completion might be of serious doubt. Upon successful completion of the Project Management program, students should:
