Yoga
is a way of life It is predominantly concerned with maintaining a state of equilibrium / equipoise at all costs Samatvam Yog Ucchyate(GITA)

the result of Sagacious wisdom and insight of Ancient Rishis of Himalayas in : Physiology Psychology, Ethics and Spirituality

Lord Krishna in Bhagwat Gita has given the path to all human beings so as to harmonize the body, mind and spirit Maharshi Patanjali systematized the various yogic practices and traditions of his times in his Treatise Yoga Sutra Yogah Chitta Vritti Nirodhah

Later on Hathayogic text also gave the techniques to make the body supple, light weighted and free from anxiety and all possible ailments

Health
WHO defined (1948) health as state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely absence of disease

Spiritual dimension was added much later. Role of spirituality in Modern conventional system of medicine has been neglected since its inception

Yoga
is a total science of strengthening and improving the Physical, Mental and Spiritual state of being

Yoga
The word "yoga" originates from the sanskrit root yuj which means Union

WHAT IS

YOGA

Yoga is the exchange of an egoistic for a universal or cosmic consciousness lifted towards or informed by supra-cosmic, transcendent, unnamable who is the source and and support of all things.

Yoga is the passage of human thinking; animal towards the God-consciousness from which he has descended (bhatka hua devta)

Ashtanga Yoga
Yoga Sutras of Patanjali describe Yoga as a practice of :
Yama Niyama Asanas Pranayama Pratyahara Dharana Dhyana Samadhi Eternal vows Observances Adjusting the body in various postures Regulated breathing in dimension of Cosmic Prana Internalization of the senses of perception Concentration of S/conscious mind Meditation: a bath to personality of noble and Ideal thoughts State of self realization

YOGA:MAIN ELEMENTS
Aspiration: Deepest Devotion, Perfect objectivity ,Yoga Approach Consecration: Complete Surrender and Communion with God. Self Introspection: Search Thyself first. Golden Attitude - Other are right , I may be wrong. Meditative Silence: In absolute silence sleeps an absolute power

Yam
Patanjali's Yoga Sutra describes five of them. They are the guidelines for how we interact with the outer world, the social disciplines to guide us in our relationships with others. These five are: Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truthfulness), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (celibacy) and Aparigraha (non-covetousness)

Niyam
The niyamas are the second constituents of Ashtanga Yoga. How we interact with ourselves, our internal world. The niyamas are about self-regulationhelping us maintain a positive environment in which to grow. Shaucha or purity, Santosha or contentment, Tapa or austerity, Swadhyaya or self-Training thru reading Ishwar-Pranidhan or meditation on the Divine

Yogasanas
A posture in harmony with one's inner consciousness Asanas help in balancing and harmonizing the basic structure of the human body, which is why they have a range of therapeutic uses too

Functions
Yogasanas basically perform five functions:

Conative (Voluntary exercise of the organs of action) Cognitive (Purposeful channelization of positive energy) Mental Intellectual and Spiritual

Functions
The postures are designed to release tension, improve flexibility and maximize the flow of vital energy Thereby affecting the various interrelated channels (nadis) of the mind-body complex

Benefits of Yogasanas
The regular practice of yogasanas has an immense amount of therapeutic value Regular practice helps to keep our body fit, controls metabolism, thereby cholesterol and sugar level, reduces weight, normalizes blood pressure and improves heart performance Physical fitness thus achieved leads to reduction of physical stress and greater vitality

Categories of Yogasanas
Standing Asanas Forward Bending Asanas Supine Asanas Inverted Asanas Abdominal and Lumbar Asanas Twisting Asanas Back Bending Asanas and Balancing Asanas

Standing Asanas
They bring elasticity in joints and muscles Build up stamina and physical stability

Forward Bending Asanas


In these postures the posterior half of the body is stretched. These prepare you to proceed further in yoga and bring consistency in the development of physical and mental pliability

Sitting and Supine Asanas


Sitting upright and supine extending positions help a sadhaka prepare physically and mentally for pranayama

Inverted Asanas
These help recover from everyday stress. They give vitality, mental balance and emotional stability

Abdominal and Lumbar Asanas


These tone and massage the abdominal organs and strengthen the pelvic and lumbar areas

Twisting Asanas
They consists of lateral stretching and twisting of the spine, toning the internal organs and reaching new horizons while tranquilizing the mind

Back Bending Asanas


These bring physical and mental sharpness and alertness. The postures are the opposite of forward bends as are the effects. In forward bends the posterior spine is extended, bringing consistency and mental peace, whereas in back bends the anterior spine is extended and stretched. The effect is invigorating and enlivening.

Balancing Asanas
These strengthen the arms and wrists and exercise the abdominal organs. They also make the body feel light and help attain a good bearing

Pranayam
Prana is the Vital Cosmic Energy Aayam implies dimension

Pranayam thus means go into dimension of Prana and try to exercise in it. It is much more than mere deep breathing

Basic Rules for Pranayam


Environment should be clean fresh and peaceful The posture should be erect sitting on vajra or sukh asana Appropriate time is the early morning (one hour before and one hour after sunrise) Stomach should be kept empty Restrict negative thoughts Keep your mind busy in creative works & be regular Perform meditation with pranayam
