(ARA) - Colder winter weather causes
hungry appetites to develop for big, hearty
favors that warm the soul. Imagine a fre-
side table topped with a succulent steak and
a robust red wine. Think you need to make
a reservation at the swankiest steakhouse in
town? Think again. With a little effort, its
easy to recreate a savory steakhouse experi-
ence at home.
A number of cattle ranchers are selling
premium cuts of meat directly to consum-
ers. Of course, sourcing the meat is only
half the battle; the other half is selecting a
wine that can hold its own up against a rich,
favorful meal. For the perfect pairing, look
to the American West.
The success of a steak dinner starts
with the cut and quality of the beef, but
ultimately rests with the preparation, says
Kristin Thornton of The Double R Ranch
Co. We take great pains to hand select and
age our cuts of beef, so we also provide our
customers with detailed cooking instruc-
tions to ensure a great dining experience.
While there are many ways to prepare
a steak, Thornton suggests using The
Double R Ranchs steakhouse style for a
mouthwatering result. An ideal method for
thicker cuts, the steakhouse style involves a
quick sear in a cast iron skillet to trap the
juices, followed by an oven fnish to achieve
the desired doneness. Not only does this
method give home cooks the perfect steak,
but it provides some additional time and
space to fnish up any side dishes.
The steakhouse method also provides am-
ple time to open a bottle of red wine and let
it breathe, and Thornton thinks you cant
go wrong with a big red from California.
Cabernet Sauvignon is a natural comple-
ment to a decadent ribeye or tenderloin,
says Michael Martini, Master winemaker
at the longstanding Louis M. Martini(R)
Winery in Californias Napa Valley. Its
full body stands up to the richness of the
cut, and the simplicity of a quality steak
provides a remarkable canvas for illustrat-
ing the wines complexities.
California Cabernet Sauvignon is relatively
easy to fnd in stores, and many winer-
ies also ship direct to consumers. The
steakhouse experience doesnt need to have
a luxury price tag, notes Martini, and just
the right Cabernet Sauvignon can cost less
than $20 per bottle.
The Louis M. Martini 2009 Sonoma
County Cabernet Sauvignon retails for
around $18 and blends fruit from several
prestigious vineyards. The result is a well-
balanced, multilayered wine with aromas
and tastes of red cherry, black cherry,
blackberry and fresh sage. An underlying
Dry Creek dustiness and subtle herbal
notes are complemented by additional
layers of chocolate and vanilla, which make
for a decidedly complex and food-friendly
wine. It can also be used as a terrifc sauce
for your steak. Heres how:
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups barbecue sauce
1 cup Louis M. Martini Sonoma County
Cabernet Sauvignon
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to
taste
Directions:
In a medium sized bowl, whisk together
barbecue sauce, wine, salt and pepper and
pour into a saucepot. On the stovetop,
bring the mixture to a boil until it thickens.
Serve on the side as a dipping sauce.
With the main attractions selected, its time
to prepare some simple sides like baked po-
tatoes and steamed veggies to accompany
the meal. Then, break out the fne linens
and china, light the fre or a few candles,
and your steakhouse transformation is
complete.

(ARA) - Your health is always a priority, and making
sure you exercise regularly is your goal. Because life
is busy, you want to get the most out of any time you
dedicate to getting in shape. So how can you maxi-
mize your efforts?
Whether youre a professional athlete or an aver-
age Jane or Joe, adopting some simple strategies
can make a huge difference in your physical ftness,
says Mackie Shilstone, a sports performance man-
ager who has worked with professional athletes like
tennis star Serena Williams
and baseball hall-of-famer
Ozzie Smith.
More than 3,000 profes-
sional athletes over the
past 30 years have turned
to Shilstone to give them
the edge they need to win.
Here are three easy steps he
thinks everyone should take
in order to get the most out
of their exercise regimen.
Step one: Prepare
If you are just starting a ftness program or have not
exercised in some time, its important to see your
physician frst. After you get the go-ahead, remember
that preparing before any physical activity is crucial.
What you put into your body can make all the dif-
ference, so getting adequate sleep and eating healthy
foods gives your body what it needs for peak perfor-
mance.
If youre like most Americans, there is one very
important nutrient youre likely not getting enough
of: omega-3 fatty acids. Because you can only get
these essential fatty acids through what you eat, and
the typical American diet is low in omega-3s, most
people do not get as much as they need. The good
news is that you can easily fll any void by incorporat-
ing a high quality fsh oil supplement into your daily
routine.
Research shows that supplementing with fsh oil
helps you maintain a healthy weight, elevates mood,
supports hydration of the cells, and keeps your joints
lubricated, fexible and mobile, says Shilstone.
Because most people do not get enough omega-3s
in their daily diet, I suggest taking Ultimate Omega
Sport supplement by Nordic Naturals.
Step two: Perform
Youve given your body all the fuel it needs to per-
form well, so now its time to get in the game. After
a good warm up, your body is ready for physical
activity. If youre beginning a new workout routine or
trying a new activity, remember to start slow and go
at your own pace. Listen to your bodys internal cues
and slow down or take a break if you need one.
Shilstone recommends you follow the guidelines on
exercise from the American College of Sports Medi-
cine. He says the goal is to exercise a minimum of 30
minutes for fve days a week at a light to moderate
intensity. This means at an intensity level before you
break a sweat. Alternatively you could exercise three
days a week at a light to moderate level, and two days
you could push yourself harder to a level where you
do break a sweat.
Shilstone stresses the impor-
tance of staying hydrated dur-
ing any exercise. To promote
joint and muscle health,
remember to stay hydrated.
A basic rule for sedentary
people to follow is to drink
one ounce of water for every
two pounds you weigh, daily.
For a 180-pound sedentary
person, this means 90 ounces
of fuid per day. More may be
needed as you become more
physically active. Temperature
plays a factor as well, he says.
Fitness doesnt have to be boring, so choose an activ-
ity you enjoy. You might even want to try something
new, like taking a dance class or trying rock climbing.
Remember to have fun and enjoy the endless ways
you can exercise to get healthy.
Step three: Recover
Be sure to follow any physical activity with stretching
to help reduce muscle soreness. A proper cool down,
including gentle stretching, allows the body to relax
and recover.
After a workout your energy stores will be depleted.
Its a smart idea to eat a combination of protein, like
a fast acting whey protein along with a maltodextrin
carbohydrate source such as a sports drink, within
two hours after your exercise. Shilstone recommends
a 1-to-2 ratio, such as 20 grams of whey protein to 40
grams of maltodextrin. This gives your body addi-
tional fuel to heal and rebuild muscles.
Studies show that omega-3s from fsh oil support the
bodys natural anti-infammatory response and pro-
tects against free radical damage, so your supplement
can also help revitalize your body in time for your
next round of activity.
These three tips can help anyone of any age perform
better, adds Shilstone. Theres no better time to
start being physically ft than the present.
Three simple steps to maximize any ftness routine

(ARA) - Maintaining a healthy home is
critical for your familys welfare - es-
pecially now as the weather cools and
you begin to spend more time indoors.
Applying a few simple solutions now will
ensure your indoor living environment is
safe and healthy for seasons to come.
Reduce toxins
Less desirable weather may make fall and
winter seem like an ideal time to tackle
your indoor painting projects. However,
you need to be mindful of the volatile
organic compounds (VOCs) found in
many interior paints and fnishes. VOCs
are one of the biggest threats to indoor
air quality; they include a variety of
chemicals, some of which may have both
short- and long-term health effects. For
indoor jobs, select paint with low or no
VOCs to keep your air fresher. Addition-
ally, some houseplants such as ivy and
gerbera daisies can help to naturally
remove VOCs from your indoor air.
Clean your indoor air
Ragweed and pollen will trigger allergy
symptoms for millions of people this fall;
however, the worst allergy triggers are
often found inside the home. Installing
a whole-home air fltration system can
help to remove indoor allergens including
dust, mildew, pet dander and pollen from
the air you breathe. For example, the
AccuClean (TM) System by American
Standard Heating & Air Conditioning
removes up to 99.98 percent of the al-
lergens from your fltered air, so even if
its allergy season outdoors, your indoor
air is crisp and clean.
Prevent mold
During the cooler fall and winter months,
people tend to seal up their homes and
spend more time inside, which traps
moisture and humidity - both signifcant
contributors to indoor mold growth.
Maintain healthy indoor humidity levels
by venting bathrooms and clothes dryers
and using an exhaust fan while cooking.
Install an air humidifer to provide year-
round control of your indoor moisture
level, and keep your home at 50 percent
humidity or lower to reduce the chance
for mold growth.
Watch out for CO
Protect your indoor living environment
from carbon monoxide or CO by install-
ing CO detectors or alarms throughout
your home. This fall, make sure your
homes heating system, including items
such as a furnace or heat pump, vents
and chimney, are inspected and serviced
by a professional contractor. And, if
there is a freplace in your home, open the
damper before lighting a fre to help pre-
vent the buildup of potentially poisonous
gases inside of your home.
Keep a seasonal routine
Most homeowners already know its
important to test their smoke alarms on
a monthly basis, but how often do you
change the alarms batteries? One way
to keep track of alarm maintenance is
to make battery changing a seasonal
activity. For example, beginning this
fall, replace the batteries in your smoke
alarms (and CO detectors), every time
you reset your clocks.
By taking these simple steps now, youll
create a safer and healthier home, allow-
ing your family to relax and enjoy all the
delights the fall season has to offer - both
outdoors and indoors.

Ideas to Make Math Fun and Exciting
As parents and educators, we know how much we all care about our children and how much
we want them to succeed. Here are some helpful tips we have found that promote achieve-
ment among students and make math an exciting subject that everyone enjoys.
1) Praise effort and not ability
When you praise ability and children have diffculty, they feel that they are not able to meet
the challenges, which lowers their confdence and their achievement. It also puts pressure on
them to succeed. However, effort is something a student can have control over, as opposed to
ability. She can always try a little harder or put in extra time. By honoring your childs work
ethic, you are saying that she can take ownership of her studies and make a difference. Over
time, she will feel more confdent.
2) Engaging in math should feel exciting, challenging and fun.
Teach your child to think of math as a great puzzle, where numbers have almost magical
powers that she wants to learn. For instance, practice breaking a part numbers and putting
them back together again in different combinations to build mathematical fexibility. Try
problems of varying levels of challenge so that students learn to persevere despite obstacles.
This is a way to build mathematical expertise.
3) Help your children become independent with mathematical thinking and interested in
talking about their strategies. When your child is solving a math problem, try having her tell
her strategies to you. Let her prove her points. By describing her process, she is strengthening
her mathematical understanding and raising her self-confdence.
4) Children need math tools that make them feel like mathematicians who do real work.
These tools should help them feel empowered and joyous. When looking for mathematical
products for your child, seek out ones that foster independence, have a good theoretical back-
ground, and ones that promote active learning. With such tools, your child is able to be in
control of the learning process. The child should be the focal point of the work, not the tools.
5) Einstein believed that love of learning was the best teacher. Products should instill
that power in children so that they may grow with wonder. When products instill
curiosity and motivation to learn, the childs ability to develop mastery increases, which
promotes achievement.
Matthew Mandelbaum and Jamie Cohen are parents and learning specialists and are the
creators of Jumping Joeys Number Line. Jumping Joeys Number Line is an innovative,
child-centered, multi-sensory arithmetic learning sys-
tem for Pre-K through Elementary. Jumping Joeys
Number Line fosters enjoyable, engaging, effective
and effcient mathematical experiences, where stu-
dents are motivated and build a strong math founda-
tion with long-term understanding. Students feel
successful and excited about learning opportunities,
and confdent in their emerging abilities.
