DISCRIMINATION Discrimination is very visible and crutial matter in the word.

It occurs when someone treats an individual or group of people differently in a disadvantageous way because of race, religion, gender, age, disability, physical demeanour, and sexual orientation. The most widespread form of discrimination is the discrimination between males and females or also known as gender discrimination. But even if it include both male and female discriminations, why is it female discrimination that comes into our minds first while talking about it? I think Its answer is very simple. Its because female discrimination is more prominant and severe in the world than male discrimination. Every day many women expose to unfair treatments in their lives just because of their gender. Their voices have never been heard in society as if its normal. They have been left to live passively. But do these woman have to live all these things? So why we have such a serious problem? What are the bases of this discrimination? I think patriarchal society which see the woman weeker than man, and sterotypes about gender roles which is also created by patriarchal system are main basis of gender discrimination. But before talking about the basis of gender discrimination, we should firstly look characteristics of each gender in order to better understand it. Males and females have different characteristics. Lets examine some of the differences between men and women. On average males are physically stronger than females which is due to the higher male muscle-mass to body-mass ratio. So they are good at fighting, hard work and actually at works that require to use physical power. With having reference to this feature male tend to express their hostility through physical violence while woman tend to use verbal expressions. Male skin is thicker than female skin and they can be resistant to cold weather. On the other hand woman withstands high temperatures better than man because her metabolism slows down less. There is also indication that females are better at recognizing differences in colours, while males are more capable of recognizing movement. Females have strong instrict and are more emotional than males. As we see each gender has some strenght, weak or moderate sides in their characteristics. But by just looking them we cant say that one gender is inferior or superior to the other. Can you see any sense of saying this? On the contrary if we look closely to these differences it wont be difficult for us to regognize that they are unique features that complete each other harmonically and of course balance each other which is the actual support of the standing of society.

As I mentioned before, the belief of patriatrical system, which emphisize man superior to woman just by looking some of the males features relating to strenght, is the first main reason of female discrimination in the word. To better understand the effects of patriatrical system we firstly should look past to agricultural civilizations. Agricultural civilizations were characteristically patriarchal; they were run by men and based on the assumption that men directed political, economic, and cultural life. It was happened with agricultural civilizations based on hunting and gathering society, that womens importance and status were reduced. Because men was good at hunting and gathering by using his strenght. Furthermore, as agricultural civilizations developed over time and became more prosperous and organized in a more detailed way, womens place in a society changed and of course female discrimination was started to increase in every part of social life. Meanwhile mens control and domination over the society speared. Individual families were set up on a patriarchal basis, with the husband and father determining basic conditions and making the key decisions. For example in developing contries it is possible to see that a woman cant go out or work without taking permision from her husband. But many years have passed, the importance of human rights have been come out and many important steps have been taken to ensure the equality and justice, nevertheless today we are also dealing with gender discrimination as a result of this system. Women constantly must fight for their rights and sometimes they struggle just to survive without domination of men threatening them. This system is the block for the equality, justice and thus peace in the world. Maybe If this system hadnt been, we wouldnt have lived such much violance, war and chaos up untill now in the World because if women had had equal rights they could have balanced or warmed up the violent side of men with their emotional side. As we see its root is very strong to destroy, so we are in need of behaving in unity with all the people in the world to solve this problem. Sterotypes is the another main fact that insist of the continuity of gender discrimination. It is closely linked with gender roles created by a patriarchal society. Gender roles by definition are the social norms that dictate what is socially appropriate male and female behavior. Most of us have some stereotypes about gender roles and some of us even dont aware of it. From the day we are born we receive messages about male and female gender roles and this process takes its place so naturally in our lifes that we cant fight against them. To be honest, as a woman I also have some stereotypes about my gender. It is very sad because Ive acquired them unconciously. They are in every parts of our life. We learn about them through a number of ways. For example, the media, TV, magazines, books, sports, commercial advertising,

internet, fairytales and toys. We can extend these exampels with many others. However the strongest influence on gender development occurs in the home, with parents passing on many of the beliefs they have about gender roles. A good and most simple exampe of stereotyping gender role is the colars of cloths chosen for babies: pink for girl, blue for boy. Children learn at a young age what it means to be a boy or a girl in our society. They have to behave according to their gender roles in order to became a member of their society. Gender roles influence women and men in every area of life including family and occupation. Gender roles and stereotypes affect couple and family interaction. Often, for example, the division of household labor is based on gender. Traditionally, In the majority of homes, the man is the figure who financially supports a family while the woman stays home, cares for the children and completes most of the domestic labor. Although women have increasingly joined the workforce, they continue to do the majority of the household labor. Some of this discrimination has been based on cultural stereotypes that cast women primarily in the roles of wives and mothers. Turkey can be given is an example for it. Even if Turkey is developing day by day and we can see its positive effects in every part of life, it can not be said as well for the equal rigts for both gender. In Turkey people are grown with many stereotypes about gender roles. They are so interniliazed that People never question them. This is generally linked with Turkish culture, yes to some extend it is true because Turkish society mostly dominated by the actions of male gender but on the other hand if we look to the roots of Turkish belief system we can see that its roots go back to the Pagan belief according to which woman have equal rigts with man and even more. But now people behave according to these stereotypes. For example woman is seen as a weak and should be protected by a man. Woman shouldnt work outside her role as a wifeis to stay home, do households labours and serve her husband. People should be aware of the wrongness of these stereotypes. The changes about this matter takes time but its good to see that there are some changes with attandanceof the more girls to the education. While it is true men and womens roles in the workplace are becoming closer in equality, there is still a great amount of problems which should be solved. For example, woman should receive the same amount of pay as her male coworker receives for the same job, but it doesnt work. Woman have to struggle more to come same position and take same amount of Money with man. And if woman became a maneger in a company, many male workers thought that it is shameful to take a command from a woman because it is always thought that workplace isnt suitable for women and they are male roles. Man often is typically at the head of a

company or leaders in local governments. As we see gender roles and stereotypes is also restrict our human rights. To sum up, when we discuss the gender discrimination, we could never ignore the root cause of the matter, which is still remained in a negligible status, the girls' right. As we see above even if they are as much human as man, women are treated so cruely and unequally in the evry part of life that even their self-progress is restricted in society. I my opinion If women arent treated equally not only in front of law but also in the society the wold would never be a peaceful place to live in.
