Abstract

The existing broadband network, which includes broadband technologies like WiMAX and FTTN, has been built upon the Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS), providing end users a 56 kb/s connection using a dial-up modem and up to 8 Mb/s with a typical Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) connection, both using a single pair of twisted copper wires. Even with these transfer rates, the demand for services such as video conferencing, video on demand (VOD), and remote storage solutions quickly exhausts the available bandwidth and doesnt meet the user requirements. This paper evaluates various broadband technologies available and being operated in the world and suggests the most applicable technology in the Indian context based on cost and performance. Also, speed testing results will be evaluated for the technology already implemented as a part of pilot project in 15 Gram Panchayat. Later in the report, recommendations have been presented based on the test results and evaluation of technology.
