Establishing New Universities: IIMU Experience

Where are we? What are our future plans? What keeps us awake at night? What are our learnings?

Status of IIMU
We operate from Mohanlal Sukhadia university premises
Started PGP programme with batch size of 60 Next year we would operate with two sections: 120 students

We manage our PGP with visiting faculty ( depending lot on IIMB friends). We have recruited 9 full time faculty: 5 faculty members have joined and balance would join in next few months. We have 250 acres of litigation free land and we hope to start construction work by next year and would move to new campus by 2014 June

MHRD Model for new IIMs/IITs


Central Govt to provide recurring grant for initial years of operations. Campus development and initial upfront investment ( Temporary premise) to be funded by GOI. State govt. to provide land to the proposed institute. Start operations in temporary premise Mentor institute to provide support( Run the institute) at the initial stage. BOG & Mentor institute to be in place before director is appointed

Innovations in Programme Design: MBA as Transformation Programme


Global Immersion: Apart from an exchange programme for the first batch itself, we also would offer international business in practice in second year where students would work on live projects in international setting. Rural Immersion: Planned in collaboration with local NGOs (Udaipur has several high quality NGOs) wherein students spend a few days in rural areas to become social entrepreneurs and look at the bottom of pyramid as customers and producers. Industry Linkage: Students would work with local small and medium industries on live projects and in the process hone their consulting skills and contribute to local industries. Commitment to Diversity: IIMU believes that diversity should be integral to the institutions achievement of excellence. This is reflected in our admission policy announced for the forthcoming year. Industrial Mentor : Each student has a mentor who is IIM MBA with ten years experience Distributed Leadership : Create opportunity where every individual gets an opportunity to develop leadership capabilities.

Centres of excellence would allow us to make substantial intellectual contribution in few focused areas. IIMU plans to set up three centres of excellence

Faculty not in Residence : Upto 20% faculty would have a base outside Udaipur Encourage senior Industry executives to Join academics: IIMU would help them in getting PhD.

Building education institute is twenty year journey but what one does in initial years has huge impact For building high quality education institute you cant find better investor than government Focus on
