Hot Potatoes

A. How to download and register for Hot Potatoes: You will have to download the Hot Potatoes program on your computer and register for Hot Potatoes. When you register, you will get a username and password. This will allow you to create longer activities on Hot Potatoes than if you had not registered. Registration is free. 1. Go to this web site: http://hotpot.uvic.ca/ . 2. Scroll down to downloads and click on Hot Potatoes 6.2 installer. 3. Click save and save it to your H:drive. Wait while the program saves. 4. From your H:drive, click on setup_hotpot_6222.exe. 5. Click run. 6. Choose English and click okay. 7. Click next. 8. Click I accept the agreement and next. 9. Continue clicking next until you get the screen with Additional Icons and two choices. Click create a desktop icon. This will help you find your Hot Potatoes program more easily. Then click next. 10. Click install. 11. Click finish. You have now successfully installed Hot Potatoes on this machine. To install it on your own computer (in your classroom) or another computer in the building, just follow steps 3-10. 12. To register for Hot Potatoes, click on help at the top of the main Hot Potatoes screen. From the drop-down bar, select register. 13. Then click on get a key at the bottom of the window. 14. Click on read the license terms. 15. At the bottom, click on the box next to I have read the license agreement 16. Fill in your first name, last name, email address and country. Also decide whether or not you want to receive emails about product updates, etc. 17. Click submit 18. Now check your email for your registration information. Save the email incase you forget your username or password. B. How to use Hot Potatoes on Moodle: The great thing about creating Hot Potatoes activities is that you can post them to Moodle and let the programs grade for you! Once the students have completed the activity, you can print their grades and enter them easily into Infinite Campus. 1. Open Hot Potatoes 6. 2. Click on help and then register. Type in your username and password. 3. Now you are ready to create an activity. Decide what type of Hot Potatoes you want to use. In class, we will practice using JCloze because we have brought along fill-in-the-blank activities. Click on JCloze. 4. Title your activity. 5. In the space below the title, type in the entire activity including the words that you will make into blanks. If you already have an electronic copy of the activity, you can just copy and paste it into the box. 6. Now highlight the first word that you want to become a blank. Click gap. 7. You might choose to offer a clue for students. If you dont want a clue, leave it blank. 8. Type in any alternative correct answers and click ok. 9. Continue this process for each of your gaps. 10. Go to file and save your activity to your H:drive. 11. To add special instructions or personalize the settings of this activity, go to options and configure output. Here you can type in any additional instructions or change the default instructions. You can also change settings such as student feedback for correct or incorrect responses, appearance and colors, etc. When finished, click save and ok. 12. Now go to your Moodle site and turn editing on. 13. Scroll down to the topic where you want your activity to appear. Click on add an activity and hot potatoes quiz. 14. Choose the options that you want for your quiz. (such as name of quiz, directions, when you want the quiz opened and closed, etc. 15. In the center of the screen, click on choose or upload a file. 16. Go through the process of uploading a file (instructions on week 1 handouts). 17. Finish entering the options that you want for this activity and click save changes. 18. Your activity should show up next. If it doesnt, go to your Moodle course page and click on the activity. If you like the way it looks, your done. If not, go back and change any settings that you want to change.
