SOFTWARE DESCRIPTION

2.1

Startup and first setup

From the directory that you selected during the installation procedure launch the file named FEED DRINK MONITORING SYSTEM VER 1_3.exe or select All programs =>
Feed Drink Monitoring System Ver 1_3 => Feed Drink Monitoring System Ver 1_3
from the Windows bar; the window that will appear during startup is shown in picture 1.

Picture 1 Main Page

Simultaneously a scroll bar will appear on the screen showing that the software is starting
up; such procedure consists in checking whether there are any devices connected to the
PC and eventually in recognizing them.
During startup, if it is the first time the software is being used or if a new cage has been
connected, the window of assignment will be viewed as shown in picture 2:

UGO BASILE - ITALY

Picture 2 Assigning a cage

The unique serial number of the device is displayed on the upper left while on the right is
a list of available cages. Assigning the serial number to an ID means that at the next
times the software is restarted and if the device is connected, the given ID will be assigned to it automatically. For example, going back to picture 2 and assuming to select
the ID CAGE_2 and subsequently confirming the values, the name FDC99998 will be
associated only to CAGE_2. For the assignment you must:

Select the cage that you want to associate to the serial number from the drop
down menu
Click on Assign

A table with all the IDs of the cages that have already been assigned, along with the devices serial number next to them, is displayed below. See paragraph 2.2 if you want to
make any changes.
Once the ID assignment phase has ended the navigation tree is built. It is structured as
shown in picture 1 on the left; in such tree the only active cages will be the assigned ones
that are also connected to the system. For the detailed description of the navigation tree
see paragraph 2.3.
The menu is at the top of the window: from here it is possible to exit the software (FILE
=> EXIT), view and modify the assignation of the cages (SETUP => SYSTEM CONFIGURATION) and consult the manufacturers information (ABOUT => INFO).

2.2

Modifying the assignment of the cages

If the assignment isnt valid, such as if a mistake has been done in assigning a given ID
to a serial number or if a new cage is connected in place of another and if there are no
more available IDs (since 8 serial numbers are assigned to 8 IDs), it is possibile to
change the setup:

UGO BASILE - ITALY

Page 4
51800 Instruction Manual (Rev. 1)

Select SETUP => SYSTEM CONFIGURATION from the menu; the window
shown in picture 2 is displayed on the screen
Select the assignment that must be deleted and click on DELETE ASSIGNMENT
Repeat the procedure as many times as needed
Press the CONFIRM button or the UNDO button to cancel the whole procedure
When the CONFIRM button is selected the software shuts down
At the next startup the software will start to recognize the new cage

2.3

Structure of the navigation tree

Once all the cages connected to the system have been assigned to their correct ID, it is
possible to configure them and to set up and run the tests.
However at first it is necessary to learn more about the navigation tree (see picture 3).
Such tree is useful to visualize all the useful information on the cages that are connected
to the system.

Picture 3 Navigation Tree

As seen in this picture a CAGE voice is structured as follows:

CAGE_n
o CALIBRATION
ACTIVITY
DRINK
FOOD
o TEST
NAME OF TEST 1

UGO BASILE - ITALY

Page 5
51800 Instruction Manual (Rev. 1)

RESULTS 1 OF TEST 1
RESULTS 2 OF TEST 1
.
NAME OF TEST 2
RESULTS 1 OF TEST 2

Such structure is exactly the same for the 8 cages that can be connected to the system.
Picture 3 shows the initial situation for one cage, a situation in which no tests have been
set up nor done yet. For this reason the structure displayed in this picture does not show
voices with test names and results.
A brief description of the pages that appear on the screen by selecting the voices from
the tree will be given below.

CAGE_n: the serial number of the device which has been assigned to the
chosen cage is displayed (picture 4)

Picture 3 Description of the id CAGE

ACTIVITY: selection of the type of bars of activity of the cages, whether with
22 or 16 sensors (????) (paragraph 2.4.2)

DRINK: calibration of the beverage scale (paragraph 2.4.1)

UGO BASILE - ITALY

Page 6
51800 Instruction Manual (Rev. 1)

FOOD: calibration of the food scale (paragraph 2.4.1)

TEST: manager of the tests associated to the cage (paragraph 2.5)

TEST NAME: name of the test (paragraph 2.6)

RISULTATI DEL TEST: view and analysis of the test results (paragraph 2.7)

From this point on the manual will give a description of the use of the software, from the
scale calibration to the analysis of the test results.

2.4

Scale calibration and setup of the bars

At this stage the setup of the cage connected to the system is defined at its best for the
test phase.
2.4.1

Calibrating the scales

The calibration of the scales is fundamental in order to obtain a precise reading of the
values; to get a correct calibration it is necessary to have a precise sample weight that
will give good results.

Select the scale of the cage that you want to calibrate from the navigation tree
(click on DRINK or FOOD)

Picture 4 - Calibration of the beverage scale

From this moment on it is possible to monitor the test on running mode in the page
shown below. The RUN button and the cage ID on top flash to warn that the cage is on
testing mode.

Picture 5 - Calibration of the food scale

From this moment on it is possible to monitor the test on running mode in the page
shown below. The RUN button and the cage ID on top flash to warn that the cage is on
testing mode.

Type the weight unit measure in the Drink/Food unit measure box
Type the value of the sample weight in the Max engeneering value box
In absence of weight on the scale click on the Acquire button next to the
Minimum value (V) box
Put the sample weight on the scale
Click on the Acquire button next to the Maximum value (V) box
Click on SAVE. When the SAVE button is not selected and a voice from the
navigation tree is selected, the following message appears:

Picture 6 Confirmation request for the modified calibration

Therefore it will be possible to save the changes or to maintain the old values.

UGO BASILE - ITALY

Page 8
51800 Instruction Manual (Rev. 1)

When the acquisition is out of the limits that are foreseen for the scales, the value will not
be saved and an error message will be displayed.
It is important to note that the values displayed by the scales during testing will be uncorrect if the scales are not calibrated correctly.
2.4.2

Setting up the bars

The only parameter that needs to be set up for the activity bars is the number of sensors.

Select ACTIVITY from the navigation tree; the window displayed below appears.

Picture 7 Calibration of the activity bars

Select the number of leds present in the activity bar

Click on the SAVE button

It is possible to modify the calibration of the cage at any moment simply by repeating the
procedure shown above.

2.5

Test Setup

At least one test must be set up in order to run a test with a cage. By selecting TEST
from the navigation tree the following window appears:

Picture 8 - Test manager

It is now possible to manage the test setup. The parameters have the following values:

NAME: test setup name

TEST TIME: duration of the test expressed in HH:MM:SS
FOOD: recording of the scale value for food
DRINK: recording of the scale value for beverages
HORIZONTAL ACTIVITY: recording of the horizontal activity
VERTICAL ACTIVITY: recording of the vertical activity
LOG ON EVENT: if selected it records data only when the horizontal position
changes, if not selected it records at a given frequency
LOG FREQUENCY: recording frequency when the LOG ON EVENT is not
selected

Picture 13 Beginning of a test

Type the animals ID, the users name and the name of the file of test results
in Test Name (obligatory field)
Click on the OK button; the name of the test results file is added to the navigation tree under the test setup name. Furthermore when the test is on running mode the symbol appears next to both the test setup name and the
test result file

UGO BASILE - ITALY

Page 13
51800 Instruction Manual (Rev. 1)

From this moment on it is possible to monitor the test on running mode in the page
shown below. The RUN button flashes to warn that the cage is on testing mode.

Picture 14 - Test on running mode

The bar over the indicator displays time; the weight indicators display the measure directly in the measuring unit defined during calibration, while the position indicator displays the position of the animal as they keep trace of the number of horizontal and vertical movements. In the Event mode recording (LOG ON EVENT selected) such data will
be viewed only when the position changes either horizontally or vertically; if the recording
mode is set on frequency (LOG ON EVENT not selected) the data is continually displayed on video, but the saved data is determined by the chosen frequency.
Even when some fields are not selected during the test setup (for example the FOOD
field is not of interest and therefore is not selected), the indicators are displayed even if
they are not recorded. If the weight values seem out of scale because too much weight
has been added or taken out from a scale during the test, the indicator of such scale will
start to blink and the in result table it will be saved as O.o.R. (Out of Range).
To stop a test click on the STOP button or wait for the end of the test; in such case a
TEST COMPLETE message will be displayed at the end of the test.
In order to exit the software select FILE => EXIT from the menu. If there is at least one
running test, a window will ask to confirm and all the running tests will stop.
In such case the results will obviously be recorded only for the portion of the test that has
been carried out; the same happens when the STOP button is selected.

UGO BASILE - ITALY

2.7

Analysis of the results

Select the name of the result file from the navigation tree. The analysis section is made
up of a series pages that can be accessed to from the Tabs.

Picture 15 - Tabs for viewing the results

All the results can be seen even if the test is still running; obviously in this case it will be
only possible to view the results up to that moment, otherwise it will be possible to view
the data that appears in the summary table that can be found in the TABLE tab (see the
next paragraph).
If the test does not foresee any sensors, the relating fields will contain null values.
2.7.1

Table

The first voice that appears by clicking on the result file name in the navigation tree is the
TABLE tab.

Picture 16 Test results table

UGO BASILE - ITALY

Page 15
51800 Instruction Manual (Rev. 1)

It is a summary in text form of the performance of the test represented by a table; the
columns of the table can be defined as follows:

TIME: time duration expressed in HH:MM:SS:d

FOOD: food weight
DRINK: beverage weight
H. POSITION: horizontal position of the animal
V. POSITION: vertical position of the animal
H. COUNT: number of movements based on the horizontal position
V. COUNT: number of movements based on the vertical position

The values that can be seen in the table are of the same nature of the file created during
the testing. This means that by opening such file with software as EXCEL, the view will
be the same, except for the data related to the STARTING TIME, the ANIMAL NAME and
the USER NAME which will appear in the first row of the exported data file.
As for the representation of the positions, the string will be viewed as a series of 0s and
1s where 1 shows where the animal was at a given moment. For example, with a 16
sensor bar this could be a possible string:
0000000011110000
In this way it is easy to understand where the animal was located since such string is a
representation of the sides of the cage.
Since it is also possible to view the results of a test that is still running, and therefore to
read the data up until that moment, the table can be updated by clicking on the UPDATE button. Such table, in fact, does not modify automatically each time new data is
recorded. It is therefore necessary to do a manual update; all the data that can be found
in the other analysis pages (see the other tabs), refer to the contents of this table.
It is also possibile to print the table by clicking on the PRINT button.
Therefore if this table is not updated, the data from the other pages will not be updated
either. If the table displays a completed test, by selecting DELETE THIS TEST RESULT
the result file of this test will be deleted and the display will go back to the test setup window. It is important to note that deleting the results means that the result file will be completely deleted and the data will be lost forever.

2.8

Analysis

The ANALYSIS tab contains three other tabs: FOOD, DRINK e ACTIVITY.

Picture 17 Analysis Tabs

51800 Instruction Manual (Rev. 1)

2.8.1

Food and Drink

The FOOD and DRINK tabs are absolutely identical. The first displays a graph of the
food weight pattern during time, and the latter displays the same thing for beverages.

Picture 18 Pattern of the Food weight during time

From this graph it is possible to obtain the variation given by the weight in a given lapse
of time:

Select a cursor from the pane located under the graph by clicking on Point 1
or Point 2
Use the joystick located on the right of the pane in order to move the cursor
towards the right or the left and select the time
Repeat the procedure for the other cursor as well
Click on the DISTANCE button in order to obtain the weight variation during
the selected lapse of time

It is alsoo possibile to export some of the data contained in the graph on a .txt
file. Use the cursors as previously shown in order to select two points from the
graph. Click on the ADD POINTS button; the two selected points are added
to the table displayed on the lower right. By selecting the DELETE POINT
button the point is deleted from the table. Select EXPORT in order to save
the data on an external file; a default name and a path are assigned. They
can both be changed by the user.

By clicking on the PRINT button the graph will be printed as it appears at

that given moment

2.8.2

Activity

The ACTIVITY tab displays both the horizontal and vertical positions at any moment
and the movements done until that moment.

Picture 20 View of the activity at a given moment

By selecting the desired moment from the TIME drop down menu on the lower right
side, their positions will be shown in the indicators located below.
In this case, as in the weight analysis case, it is possible to export some of the graphs
points on an external file. The procedure is exactly the same as the weight analysis one

Use the cursors as previously shown in order to select two points from the graph
Click on the ADD POINTS button; in the table located on the lower left side the
two added points are displayed
By selecting a point from the table and by clicking on the DELETE POINT the
point is deleted from the table
Select EXPORT in order to save the data contained in the table on an external
file; a default name and a path are assigned. They can both be changed by the
user

By clicking on the PRINT button the graph will be printed as it appears at that given
moment.

2.9

Film

In the FILM tab it is possible to monitor the performance of the test in a specified time
period and at a given filming speed.

Picture 21 Visualizing the film of the test

Select the starting time in the STARTING TIME box

Select the ending time in the ENDING TIME box
Select the number of frames per second in the Frame/Secbox: this value
shows the number of events that must be visualized every second. This

UGO BASILE - ITALY

Page 19
51800 Instruction Manual (Rev. 1)

means that the reproduction does not reflect real time; for example, if the recording had been done for example based on events, showing a frame per
second, the events would be viewed with a frequency of one second, even if
the time lapse from on event to the other might be longer.
Click on PLAY; the play symbol will appear in the navigation tree next to the
test result file
Click on STOP to stop viewing. The reproduction automatically stops when it
reaches the time specified in the ENDING TIME box and a popup message
will appear.

FOLDER STRUCTURE

By using the software according to the instructions given in the previous chapter, some
folders and files are created. It is particularly useful to see the files and folders related to
the test results in detail.
The structure of such folders is as follows:

Main folder
o File config.cfg
o Folder SERIAL NUMBER 1
File calibration.cfg
Folder TEST
File CONFIGURATION TEST 1
File CONFIGURATION TEST 2

File CONFIGURATION TEST n
Folder CONFIGURATION TEST 1
o File RESULT 1
o Folder RESULT 1
File EXPORT 1
File EXPORT 2
o File RESULT 2
o
o File RESULT m
Folder CONFIGURATION TEST 2

Folder CONFIGURATION TEST N
o Folder SERIAL NUMBER 2
o
o Folder SERIAL NUMBER 8

All the folders and the files should not be modified manually because this might not be
recognized by the software. The only files that might be of interest for the user are the
ones mentioned in the above structure as RESULT m; such files, display the results as
shown in the table contained in the software (see paragraph 2.7.1). By opening these

UGO BASILE - ITALY

Page 20
51800 Instruction Manual (Rev. 1)

files with software such as EXCEL, or even simply Windows Note Pad, the test results
will be displayed. Below is an example taken from a result file:

This is also valid for the exported files which are created by default in the folder named
after the result file. In this case, however, the file structure depends on the exported data,
and whether this data is related to weight or position:
