Hardware Commands
Turning ON the UC864
To turn on UC864-E/G/WD/E-DUAL, the pad ON# must be tied low for at least 1 second and then released. The maximum current that can be drained from the ON# pad is 0.1 mA. A simple circuit to do it is:
NOTE: In order to avoid a back powering effect it is recommended to avoid having any HIGH logic level signal applied to the digital pins of the module when is powered OFF or during an ON/OFF transition.
6.2.

During the Initialization state, any kind of AT-command is not available. DTE must be waiting for the Activation state to communicate with UC864 family. NOTE: To check if the UC864 family has powered on, the hardware line PWRMON must be monitored. When PWRMON goes high, the module has powered on. NOTE: Do not use any pull up resistor on the ON# line, it is internally pulled up. Using pull up resistor may bring to latch up problems on the UC864 family power regulator and improper power on/off of the module. The line ON# must be connected only in open collector configuration. NOTE: In this document all the lines are inverted. Active low signals are labeled with a name that ends with a "#" or with a bar over the name. NOTE: UC864 family turns fully on also by supplying power to the Charge pad (provided there is a battery on the VBATT pads). NOTE: UC864-E version also turns fully on by supplying power to the USB_VBUS pin (provided there is a battery on the VBATT pads). Care must be taken to avoid supplying power to the USB_VBUS pin before the module turns on. To check if the UC864-E has powered on, the hardware line PWRMON must be monitored. When PWRMON goes high, the module has powered on.

6.3.
Either ways the device issues to the network a detach request that informs the network that the device will not be reachable any more. To turn OFF UC864 family the pad ON/OFF# must be tied low for at least 2 seconds and then released. When the hold time of ON/OFF# is above 2 seconds, UC864 family goes into the finalization state and finally will shut down PWRMON at the end of this state. The period of the finalization state can differ according to the situation in which the UC864 family is so it cannot be fixed definitely. Normally it will be above 10 seconds later from releasing ON/OFF# and DTE should monitor the status of PWRMON to see the actual power off.

NOTE: To turn OFF UC864-E version, first of all, you MUST cut off the supplying power to the USB_VBUS, or the module does not turn off. TIP: To check if the device has powered off, hardware line PWRMON must be monitored. When PWRMON goes low, the device has powered off. NOTE: In order to avoid a back powering effect it is recommended to avoid having any HIGH logic level signal applied to the digital pins of the module when is powered OFF or during an ON/OFF transition.
6.3.1.
To unconditionally restart UC864 Family, the pad RESET# must be tied low for at least 200 milliseconds and then released.

In GSM/GPRS mode, RF transmission is not continuous and it is packed into bursts at a base frequency of about 216 Hz, and the relative current peaks can be as high as about 2A. Therefore the power supply has to be designed in order to withstand these current peaks without big voltage drops; this means that both the electrical design and the board layout must be designed for this current flow. If the layout of the PCB is not well designed, a strong noise floor is generated on the ground; this will reflect on all the audio paths producing an audible annoying noise at 216 Hz; if the voltage drops during the peak, current absorption is too much. The device may even shut down as a consequence of the supply voltage drop.

+ 5V Input Source Power Supply Design Guidelines The desired output for the power supply is 3.8V, hence there is not a big difference between the input source and the desired output and a linear regulator can be used. A switching power supply will not be suited because of the low drop-out requirements. When using a linear regulator, a proper heat sink must be provided in order to dissipate the power generated. A Bypass low ESR capacitor of adequate capacity must be provided in order to cut the current absorption peaks close to UC864-E/G/WD /E-DUAL, a 100F tantalum capacitor is usually suited. Make sure the low ESR capacitor on the power supply output (usually a tantalum one) is rated at least 10V. UC864-E/G/WD/E-DUAL Hardware User Guide 1vv0300766 Rev.10- 2011-05-10 When using a switching regulator, a 500kHz or more switching frequency regulator is preferable because of its smaller inductor size and its faster transient response. This allows the regulator to respond quickly to the current peaks absorption. In any case, the frequency and Switching design selection is related to the application to be developed due to the fact the switching frequency could also generate EMC interferences. For car PB battery the input voltage can rise up to 15.8V and this must be kept in mind when choosing components: all components in the power supply must withstand this voltage. A Bypass low ESR capacitor of adequate capacity must be provided in order to cut the current absorption peaks. A 100F tantalum capacitor is usually suited for this. Make sure the low ESR capacitor on the power supply output (usually a tantalum one) is rated at least 10V. For Car applications a spike protection diode must be inserted close to the power input, in order to clean the supply from spikes. A protection diode must be inserted close to the power input, in order to save UC864 Family from power polarity inversion. This can be the same diode as for spike protection.

Battery Source Power Supply Design Guidelines The desired nominal output for the power supply is 3.8V and the maximum allowed voltage is 4.2V, hence a single 3.7V Li-Ion cell battery type is suited for supplying the power to the Telit UC864 Family module. The three cells Ni/Cd or Ni/MH 3.6 V Nom. battery types or 4V PB types must not be used directly since their maximum voltage can rise over the absolute maximum voltage for UC864 Family and damage it.
NOTE: Do not use any Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, and Pb battery types directly connected with UC864 Family Their use can lead to overvoltage on UC864 Family and damage it. Use only Li-Ion battery types.
A Bypass low ESR capacitor of adequate capacity must be provided in order to cut the current absorption peaks, a 100F tantalum capacitor is usually suited. Make sure the low ESR capacitor (usually a tantalum one) is rated at least 10V. A protection diode must be inserted close to the power input, in order to save UC864 Family from power polarity inversion. Otherwise the battery connector must be done in a way to avoid polarity inversions when connecting the battery. The battery capacity must be at least 500mAh in order to withstand the current peaks of 2A; the suggested capacity is from 500mAh to 1000mAh.
7.3.1.4.
Battery Charge Control Circuitry Design Guidelines The charging process for Li-Ion Batteries can be divided into 4 phases: qualification and trickle charging fast charge 1 - constant current final charge - constant voltage or pulsed charging maintenance charge
The qualification process consists of a battery voltage measure, indicating roughly its charge status. If the battery is deeply discharged, meaning its voltage is lower than the trickle charging threshold, then charging must start slowly, possibly with a current limited to the precharging process. The current must be kept very low with respect to the fast charge value. During trickle charging the voltage across the battery terminals rises; when it reaches the fast charge threshold level the charging process goes into a fast charge phase. During the fast charge phase the process proceeds with a current limited for charging; this current limit depends on the required time for completing the charge and on battery pack capacity. During this phase the voltage across the battery terminals still raises but at a lower rate. Once the battery voltage reaches its maximum voltage the process goes into its third

UC864-E/G/WD/E-DUAL Hardware User Guide 1vv0300766 Rev.10- 2011-05-10 state: Final charging. The voltage measure to change the process status into final charge is very important. It must be ensured that the maximum battery voltage is never exceeded, otherwise the battery may be damaged and even explode. Moreover, for constant final chargers, the voltage phase (final charge) must not start before the battery voltage has reached its maximum value, otherwise the battery capacity will be slightly reduced. The final charge can be of two different types: constant voltage or pulsed. UC864 Family uses constant voltage. The constant voltage charge proceeds with a fixed voltage regulator (very accurately set to the maximum battery voltage) and the current will decrease while the battery is becoming charged. When the charging current falls below a certain fraction of the fast charge current value, the battery is considered fully charged, the final charge stops and eventually starts the maintenance. The pulsed charge process has no voltage regulation, instead charge continues with pulses. Usually the pulse charge works in the following manner: the charge is stopped for some time, let us say few hundreds of ms, then the battery voltage will be measured and when it drops below its maximum value, a fixed time length charging pulse is issued. As the battery approaches its full charge, the off time will become longer and the duty-cycle of the pulses will decrease. The battery is considered fully charged when the pulse duty-cycle is less than a threshold value, typically 10%. When this happens, the pulse charge stops and eventually the maintenance starts. The last phase is not properly a charging phase, since the battery at this point is fully charged and the process may stop after the final charge. The maintenance charge provides an additional charging process to compensate the charge leak typical of a Li-Ion battery. It is done by issuing pulses with a fixed time length, again few hundreds of ms, and a duty-cycle around 5% or less. This last phase is not implemented in the UC864 Family internal charging algorithm so oncecharged battery is left discharging down to a certain threshold. It is cycled from full charge to slight discharge even if the battery charger is inserted. This guarantees that the remaining charge in the battery is a good percentage and that the battery is not damaged by keeping it always fully charged (Li-Ion rechargeable batteries usually deteriorate when kept fully charged). Last but not least, in some applications, it is highly desired that the charging process restarts when the battery is discharged and its voltage drops below a certain threshold. This is typical for the UC864 Family internal charger. As you can see, the charging process is not a trivial task to do; moreover all these operations must start only if battery temperature is inside charging range, usually 5C - 45C. The UC864 Family measures the temperature of its internal component in order to satisfy this last requirement. This not exactly the same as the battery temperature but in common use, the two temperatures must not differ too much and the charging temperature range must be guaranteed.

UC864-E/G/WD/E-DUAL Hardware User Guide 1vv0300766 Rev.10- 2011-05-10 NOTE: For all the threshold voltages, inside UC864-E/G/WD/E-DUAL, all thresholds are fixed in order to maximize Li-Ion battery performances and do not need to be changed. NOTE: In this application the battery charger input current must be limited to less than 400mA. This can be done by using a current limited wall adapter as the power source. NOTE: When starting the charger from Module powered off, the startup will be in CFUN4; to activate the normal mode a command AT+CFUN=1 has to be provided. There is also the possibility to activate the normal mode using the ON_OFF* signal. In this case, when HW powering off the module with the same line (ON_OFF*) and having the charger still connected, the module will go back to CFUN4. NOTE: It is important to have a 100F Capacitor to VBAT in order to avoid instability of the charger circuit if the battery is accidentally disconnected during the charging activity.

UC864-E/G/WD/E-DUAL Hardware User Guide 1vv0300766 Rev.10- 2011-05-10 it is possible to consider from the thermal point of view that the device absorbs current significantly only during calls. If we assume that the device stays in transmission for short periods of time (let us say few minutes) and then remains for quite a long time in idle (let us say one hour), then the power supply has always the time to cool down between the calls and the heat sink could be smaller than the calculated for 790mA maximum RMS current. There could even be a simple chip package (no heat sink). Moreover in average network conditions the device is requested to transmit at a lower power level than the maximum and hence the current consumption will be less than 790mA (being usually around 150mA). For these reasons the thermal design is rarely a concern and the simple ground plane where the power supply chip is placed can be enough to ensure a good thermal condition and avoid overheating. For the heat generated by the UC864-E/G/WD/E-DUAL, you can consider it to be during transmission 1W max during CSD/VOICE calls and 2W max during class12 GPRS upload. This generated heat will be mostly conducted to the ground plane under the UC864E/G/WD/E-DUAL; you must ensure that your application can dissipate heat In the WCDMA/HSDPA mode(HSDPA not available in UC864-WD), since UC864 Family emits RF signals continuously during transmission, you must pay special attention how to dissipate the heat generated. The current consumption will be up to about 730mA in HSDPA (680mA in WCDMA/WEDGE) continuously at the maximum TX output power (23dBm). Thus, you must arrange the PCB area as large as possible under UC864 Family which you will mount. You must mount UC864-E/G/WD/E-DUAL on the large ground area of your application board and make many ground vias to dissipate the heat. The peak current consumption in the GSM mode is higher than that in WCDMA. However, considering the heat sink is more important in case of WCDMA. As mentioned before, a GSM signal is bursty, thus, the temperature drift is more insensible than WCDMA. Consequently, if you prescribe the heat dissipation in the WCDMA mode, you dont need to think more about the GSM mode.

UC864-E/G/WD/E-DUAL Hardware User Guide 1vv0300766 Rev.10- 2011-05-10 The protection diode must be placed close to the input connector where the power source is drained. The PCB traces from the input connector to the power regulator. IC must be wide enough to ensure no voltage drops to occur when the 2A current peaks are absorbed. Note that this is not made in order to save power loss but especially to avoid the voltage drops on the power line at the current peaks frequency of 216 Hz that will reflect on all the components connected to that supply (also introducing the noise floor at the burst base frequency.) For this reason while a voltage drop of 300-400 mV may be acceptable from the power loss point of view, the same voltage drop may not be acceptable from the noise point of view. If your application does not have audio interface but only uses the data feature of the Telit UC864-E/G/WD/E-DUAL, then this noise is not so disturbing and power supply layout design can be more forgiving. The PCB traces to UC864 Family and the Bypass capacitor must be wide enough to ensure no significant voltage drops to occur when the 2A current peaks are absorbed. This is a must for the same above-mentioned reasons. Try to keep this trace as short as possible. The PCB traces connecting the Switching output to the inductor and the switching diode must be kept as short as possible by placing the inductor and the diode very close to the power switching IC (only for switching power supply). This is done in order to reduce the radiated field (noise) at the switching frequency (usually 100-500 kHz). The use of a good common ground plane is suggested. The placement of the power supply on the board must be done in a way to guarantee that the high current return paths in the ground plane are not overlapped to any noise sensitive circuitry as the microphone amplifier/buffer or earphone amplifier. The power supply input cables must be kept separately from noise sensitive lines such as microphone/earphone cables.

Reset Signal
Signal RESET Function Phone reset I/O I PIN Number 54
RESET is used to reset the UC864 Family module. Whenever this signal is pulled low, UC864 Family is reset. When the device is reset it stops all operations. After the release of the reset UC864 Family is unconditionally shut down, without doing any detach operations from the network where it is registered. This behavior is not a proper shutdown because the device is requested to issue a detach request on turn off. For this reason, the Reset signal must not be used for normally shutting down the device, but only as an emergency exit in the rare case the device remains stuck waiting for some network response. The RESET is internally controlled on start-up to achieve always a proper power-on reset sequence. There is no need to control this pin on start-up. It may only be used to reset a device already on, that is, not responding to any command. NOTE: Do not use this signal to power off UC864 Family Use the ON/OFF signal to perform this function or the AT#SHDN command(To turn off UC864-E, first of all, you MUST cut off supplying power to the USB_VBUS, or the module does not turn off). NOTE: In order to avoid a back powering effect it is recommended to avoid having any HIGH logic level signal applied to the digital pins of the module when is powered OFF or during an ON/OFF transition. Serial Ports
The serial port on the Telit UC864 Family is the interface between the module and OEM hardware. 2 serial ports are available on the module: MODEM SERIAL PORT; MODEM SERIAL PORT 2 (DEBUG).
10.1.
Depending on the type of serial port on the OEM hardware, a level translator circuit may be needed to make the system work. The only configuration that does not need a level translation is the 2.6V UART. The serial port on UC864 Family is a +2.6V UART with all the 7 RS232 signals. It differs from the PC-RS232 in signal polarity (RS232 is reversed) and levels. The levels for UC864 Family UART are the CMOS levels:

Actually, the RS232 UART 16450, 16550, 16650 & 16750 chipsets accept signals with lower levels on the RS232 side (EIA/TIA-562), allowing a lower voltage-multiplying ratio on the level translator. Note that the negative signal voltage must be less than 0V and hence some sort of level translation is always required. The simplest way to translate the levels and invert the signal is by using a single chip level translator. There are a multitude of them, differing in the number of drivers and receivers and in the levels (be sure to get a true RS232 level translator not a RS485 or other standards). By convention the driver is the level translator from the 0-2.6V UART to the RS232 level. The receiver is the translator from the RS232 level to 0-2.6V UART. In order to translate the whole set of control lines of the UART you will need: NOTE: The digital input lines working at 2.6V CMOS have an absolute maximum input voltage of 3.0V; therefore the level translator IC shall not be powered by the +3.8V supply of the module. Instead, it must be powered from a +2.6V / +2.9V (dedicated) power supply. This is because in this way the level translator IC outputs on the module side (i.e. UC864 Family inputs) will work at +3.8V interface levels, damaging the module inputs. 5 drivers 3 receivers

In this configuration the SP3282EB will adhere to EIA/TIA-562 voltage levels instead of RS232 (-5 ~ +5V)
Second solution could be done using a MAXIM transceiver (MAX218) In this case the

Another level adapting method could be done using a standard RS232 Transceiver (MAX3237EAI) adding some resistors to adapt the levels on the UC864 Input lines. NOTE: In this case has to be taken in account the length of the lines on the application to avoid problems in case of High-speed rates on RS232. The RS232 serial port lines are usually connected to a DB9 connector with the following layout: signal names and directions are named and defined from the DTE point of view

A maximum of 9 resistors of 47 K pull-up can be connected to the VAUX1 pin, provided no other devices are connected to it and the pulled-up lines are UC864 Family input lines connected to open collector outputs in order to avoid latch-up problems on UC864 Family Careful approach is needed to avoid latch-up on UC864 Family and the use of this output line to power electronic devices must be avoided, especially for devices that generate spikes and noise such as switching level translators, micro controllers, failure in any of these condition can severely compromise the UC864 Family functionality.

USB Port
UC864 Family includes an integrated universal serial bus (USB) transceiver, compatible with USB 2.0 specifications and supporting the USB low-speed [1.5 Mb/s] and full-Speed (12 Mb/s) modes. In HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) mode (N.A. in UC864-WD), the downlink data speed rates up to 7.2Mbps (3.6Mbps in UC864-E-DUAL). Hence OEMs need to interface UC864-E/G/E-DUAL to applications in full-speed (12 Mb/s) mode. Signal UC864 Family Pad No. 48 80 79 35 Usage Power supply for the internal USB transceiver. This pin is configured as an analog input or an analog output depending upon the type of peripheral device connected. Minus (-) line of the differential, bi-directional USB signal to/from the peripheral device Plus (+) line of the differential, bi-directional USB signal to/from the peripheral device Analog input used to sense whether a peripheral device is connected and if connected, to determine the peripheral type, host or slave
UC864 Family does NOT support host device operation at the moment, that is, it works as a slave device. Consequently USB_ID must be opened (not connected).

Audio Section
The Baseband chip was developed for the cellular phones, which needed two separated amplifiers both in RX and in TX section. A couple of amplifiers had to be used with internal audio transducers while the other couple of amplifiers had to be used with external audio transducers. To distinguish the schematic signals and the Software identifiers, two different definitions were introduced, with the following meaning: internal audio transducers HS/MT (from HandSet or MicroTelephone ) external audio transducers HF (from HandsFree )
Actually the acronyms have not the original importance. In other words this distinction is not necessary, being the performances between the two blocks like the same. Only if the customer needs higher output power to the speaker, he has a constraint. Otherwise the choice could be done in order to overcome the PCB design difficulties. For these reasons we have not changed the HS and HF acronyms, keeping them in the Software and on the schematics. The Base Band Chip of the UC864 Family Telit Module maintains the same architecture. For more information refer to Telit document: 80000NT10025a UC864 Audio Settings Application Note .

Selection mode
Only one block can be active at a time , and the activation of the requested audio path is done via hardware by AXE line or via software by AT#CAP command . Moreover the Sidetone functionality could be implemented by the amplifier fitted between the transmit path and the receive path, enabled at request in both modes.

Electrical Characteristics
TIP: Being the microphone circuitry the more noise sensitive, its design and layout must be realized with particular care. Both microphone paths are balanced and the OEM circuitry must be balanced designed to reduce the common mode noise typically generated on the ground plane. However the customer can use the unbalanced circuitry for particular application.
12.2.1.
(*) WARNING : AC means that the signals from the microphone have to be connected to input lines of the module through capacitors which value has to be 100nf. not respecting this constraint, the input stages will be damaged.
WARNING: when particular OEM application needs a Single Ended Input configuration, it is forbidden connecting the unused input directly to Ground, but only through a 100nF capacitor. Dont forget that thus the useful input signal will be halved.

Drawing of the Magnetic Buzzer The disk and diaphragm are attracted to the core by the magnetic field. When an oscillating signal is moved through the coil, it produces a fluctuating magnetic field, which vibrates the diaphragm at a frequency of the drive signal. Thus the sound is produced as relative to the frequency applied.
Diaphragm movement.

Frequency Behavior
The frequency behavior represents the effectiveness of the reproduction of the applied signals. Because its performance is related to a square driving waveform (whose amplitude varies from 0V to Vpp), if you modify the waveform (e.g. from square to sinus) the frequency response will change.

Bypass capacitor on Power supplies
When a sudden voltage is asserted to or cut from the power supplies, the steep transition makes some reactions such as the overshoot and undershoot. This abrupt voltage transition can affect the device not to work or make it malfunction. The bypass capacitors are needed to alleviate this behavior and it can be affected differently according to the various applications. The customers have to pay special attention to this when they design. The length and width of the power lines need to be considered carefully and the capacitance of the capacitors need to be selected accordingly. The capacitor will also avoid the ripple of the power supplies and the switching noise causing in TDMA system like GSM. Specially the bypass capacitor must be mounted on the Vbatt (Pin 1,2,3,4) and USB_VBUS (Pin 48) lines in the application board. Telit recommend that the capacitance on Vbatt and USB_VBUS should be at least above 100uF respectively. But the customers still have to consider that the capacitance depends on the conditions of the application. Generally more capacitance is requested as the length of the power line is longer. When designing SIM interface on the application boards, the following schematics are recommended.
15.2.
SIM interface
When designing SIM interface on the application boards, the following schematics are recommended.
All the components in the application side (dotted line above) should be included into the application board and the recommended values should be referred as well. Special attention should be paid to the value of Resistor R1. 3GPP specifications define that the rise time and the fall time of the IO signal shall not exceed 1 us. Resistor R1 is very closely related to the rise time and the fall time of the SIMIO signal. It can differ depending on the application board therefore it should be considered at the customer point of view. Telit highly recommends that the customers should verify the relating specification when they design. To
