A & K has worked with NDOT on a vari-
ety of projects, including a more than $9
million project in Battle Mountain, Nev.,
in which A & K removed a portion of a
bridge, a cattle guard, expansion joints, a
concrete barrier rail, bituminous and com-
posite surfaces and a fence.
It also completed roadway and struc-
ture excavation, woven geotextile place-
ment, granular backfill and roadbed mod-
ular placement of specialized concrete,
reinforced steel, plantmix, landscape, irri-
gation and bridge deck preparation.
A & K says it helps NDOT fulfill its
mission to “efficiently plan, design, con-
struct and maintain a safe and effective
transportation system for Nevada’s trav-
elers taking into consideration the envi-
ronment, economic and social needs and
intermodal transportation opportunities,”
NDOT says.
“[We are] responsible for the planning,
construction, operation and maintenance
of the 5,400 miles of highway and nearly
1,000 bridges which make up the state
highway system.
“The department is divided into three
assistant engineers in each,” it says. “The
districts are responsible for supervising
all state transportation activities within
their local areas.
“NDOT’s headquarters is located in
Carson City, with the three main district
offices located in Las Vegas, Reno and
Elko. Major maintenance stations are in
Ely, Tonopah and Winnemucca. NDOT is
overseen by a seven-member board of
directors.”
In the Beginning
The association was founded in 1917
under the name Nevada Department of
Highways. “The 1917 legislature gave the
state engineer general supervision of
road work, which was performed by con-
vict labor,” NDOT recalls. “An approba-
tion of $20,000 was made, but the funds
were quickly exhausted and all work
ceased later that same year.
“When the1917 legislature passed the
State Highway Law, Nevada began an
active roadway program, which has
grown to more than $5 million per year
to improve the state’s highways.” ■
