COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH

SAN DIEGO

January 8, 2012 Epiphany of the Lord

Pastors Corner ~
The EPIPHANY OF THE LORD is the feast that commemorates the appearance of God to the world, when the non-Jewish magi visited the newborn King by the guidance of the star. In other traditions, Epiphany is not only the visit of the magi (sometimes called three kings) but also includes the Nativity of Jesus and his Baptism. In the broad sense, Epiphany is also Theophany, God the invisible One has appeared and made Himself visible not only to the chosen People but even to the Gentiles. The homage of the magi with their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh symbolize the truth about the Holy Child: Gold for a King; Frankincense for God and Myrrh for the Suffering Messiah. The Feast of the BAPTISM OF THE LORD is celebrated this year one day after the Feast of Epiphany. Jesus Christ did not need to be baptized but He did it in the name of all sinners. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Cor.5:21) This feast marks the closing of the Christmas season and the beginning of Ordinary Time in the liturgy. THANK YOU VERY MUCH to the 150 participants at the New Years Eve Party in the St. Columba hall. It was truly a night of fun and enjoyment, with good food, warm fellowship, singing, dancing and prayer as we waited for the countdown of the New Year 2012. From those who were present at the party we have gotten positive feedback of their wonderful experience, who all agreed that the party is worth repeating and celebrating every year. Our appreciation also goes to all who helped prepare the hall with decorations that made it a nice venue for the party, and also to all who helped to bring fun to that wonderful occasion.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Saturday, January 14th, 8:45 am-3:30 pm, Daily Chapel
What does one actually do during Adoration? It means that you have some time alone with Jesus to pray your favorite prayers, read the Bible, contemplate acts of faith, hope, charity, thanksgiving, reparation, pray the rosary, or do any type of prayerful devotion that suits you before the Lord. You can just sit and say nothing, simply keeping Him company, just as you would with a dear friend. Take time from your busy schedule for a few precious minutes of quiet conversation with Our Lord.
