ANNEALING: Slow cooling from the ausrenitixing range effects little softening beyond that developed by normalizing. NORMAUZJNG: Tbe usual heat treatment for Nicloy 5 is normalizing. This is accomplished by heating to 1575 F., holding at temperature until uniformly heated and cooling in air. Normalixing is sometimes followed by tempering to lower hardness or strength. Pipe and tubing for low temperature service is supplied in accordance with Grade 5 of ASTM Specifications A-333-58T and A-334-581, respectively. These specifications require heat treatment by normalizing or normalizing and tempering unless otherwise agreed between manufacturer and purchaser. STRESS RELIEVING: Cold worked tubing is normalized for srress relief and softening. For certain applications other than low temperature service, hot rolled tubing may be heat treated at 1200 F. followed by air cooling. AC1

Nicloy 5 is a low carbon, 5% nickel steel having good rough ness and resistance ro impact at subatmospheric remperamres. It has excellent combination of high strength, excellent ductility, and good corrosion resistance afrer suitable heat treatment. It is corrosion resistance to certain types of industrial fluids, such as some caustic soda solutions and paper mill liquors. In the corrosion resisting field, Nicloy 5 tubes have been used to a considerable exrent in the handling and evaporation of paper mill black liquors for the recovery of chemicals from sulphate and soda mill liquors. As evaporator tubes replacing carbon steel tubes, Nicloy 5 has given economcial life in the milder concentrations and in low-ve!ocity evaporarors. Its use is not recommended in high ve!ocity forced-circulation evaporators, in which service stainiess steel tubing is preferred. Nicloy 5 has been used and gives excellent service, compared with carbon steel tubing, in evaporator equipment used in the concentration of sodium hydroxide. In such service, its use should be confined co concentrations ranging between 17 and about 22% NaOH ar temperatures 170 to 190F, since higher concentrations or temperatures may resulr in caustic embrinlements (stress-corrosion cracking) at those areas of the metal which have been strained in expanding the tubes into the vaporator heads or tube sheets. Short-time elevared temperature properties are shown to indicate the temperature range for low ductility. The alloy is not intended for high temperature service.

Workability:
Cold bending can be done to the same extent as medium carbon steel. If tubes are bent to short radii, 6 to 10 times diameter, heavy strains are introduced. To avoid fracture from shock difIerenrial corrosion in service or stress-corrosion cracking, it is advisable co stress relieve cold bent tubes when the elongation on the outside fibers exceeds about 15%. This may be done by heating the stressed portion locally to approximately 1200F. Moderate hot bending or coiling may be done in the remperamre range lOOO-1250F. Upset or forge in the range 2100-24OOF. After hot working, heat treat to relieve the air-
