ASTM SPECIFICATIONS WITH REFERENCE TO AASHTO SPECIFICATIONS

During recent years, specifications have been prepared to cover many types of precast concrete pipe. The most generally used are issued by the American Society for Testing and Materials, commonly known as ASTM. A number of governmental agencies also have specifications which are similar to the ASTM designations. The user of concrete pipe is assured of a uniform and reliable product when he designates that the product shall be made to the requirements of a nationally accepted specification. Cretex pipe is made in accordance with applicable specifications or the Cretex engineering department can design pipe to meet most special conditions. ASTM Specifications are designated by two sets of numbers, the first which identifies the products and the second which indicates the year of publication. Thus the full number for the first specification listed below might be ASTM C76-85 which would indicate that the latest revision was made in 1985. The following ASTM specifications are published. Comparable American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Specifications numbers are also listed.

ASTM C76 (AASHTO M170) Reinforced Concrete Culvert, Storm Drain and Sewer Pipe This specification covers circular reinforced concrete pipe intended to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes and storm water and for the construction of culverts. The standard strength classes (D-Load requirements) per ASTM C76 specification are as follows: Class 0.01" Crack I II III IV V 800 lbs. 1,000 lbs. 1,350 lbs. 2,000 lbs. 3,000 lbs. Ultimate 1,200 lbs. 1,500 lbs. 2,000 lbs. 3,000 lbs. 3,750 lbs.

Although the standard sizes and classes of pipe will be satisfactory for the majority of installations, some jobs will require pipe that has larger diameter, a higher strength or both than is covered by ASTM C76 tables. Pipe of all sizes with strengths of more than twice those shown in ASTM C76 tables have been designed, manufactured, tested, and successfully installed. There may be occasions when for economical or other reasons an intermediate class, alternate reinforcing, or otherwise different circular pipe than shown in ASTM C76 may be desired. Such pipe can be specified under ASTM C655. ASTM C361 Reinforced Concrete Low-Head Pressure Pipe This specification covers circular reinforced concrete pipe intended to be used for the construction of pressure pipelines with low internal hydrostatic heads generally not exceeding 125 feet.

ASTM C443 (AASHTO M198) Joints for Circular Concrete Sewer and Culvert Pipe, Using Rubber Gaskets This specification covers flexible watertight joints for circular concrete sewer and water pipe and precast manhole sections, using rubber gaskets for sealing the joints, where infiltration or exfiltration is a factor in the design. ASTM C478 (AASHTO M199) Precast Reinforced Concrete Manhole Sections This specification covers precast reinforced concrete manhole base sections, riser sections and appurtenances such as grade rings, steps, tops and special sections for use in sewer and water works. ASTM C497 (AASHTO T33) Standard Methods of Testing Concrete Pipe, Sections or Tile These methods cover testing of concrete pipe, sections and tile. The tests described are used in production testing and acceptance testing to evaluate the properties provided for in the specifications. ASTM C506 (AASHTO M206) Reinforced Concrete Arch Culvert, Storm Drain and Sewer Pipe This specification covers reinforced arch shaped concrete pipe to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, storm water and for the construction of culverts. ASTM C507 (AASHTO M207) Reinforced Concrete Elliptical Culvert, Storm Drain, and Sewer Pipe This specification covers reinforced elliptically shaped concrete pipe (horizontal and vertical elliptical) to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, storm water and for the construction of culverts. ASTM C655 (AASHTO M242) Reinforced Concrete D-Load Culvert, Storm Drain and Sewer Pipe This specification covers reinforced concrete pipe designed for specific D-loads and intended to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes and storm water and for the construction of culverts. ASTM C789 (AASHTO M259) - Please see ASTM C1433 for current specification Precast Reinforced Concrete Box Sections for Culverts, Storm Drains and Sewers This specification covers single-cell precast reinforced concrete box sections intended to be used for the construction of culverts and for the conveyance of storm water, industrial wastes and sewage. ASTM C822 (ASTM M262) Standard Definitions of Terms Relating to Concrete Pipe and Related Products ASTM C850 (AASHTO M273) - Please see ASTM C1433 for current specification Precast Reinforced Concrete Box Sections for Culverts, Storm Drains and Sewers with less than 2 ft. of Cover Subjected to Highway Loadings This specification covers single-cell precast reinforced concrete box sections with less than 2 ft. of cover subjected to highway loadings and intended to be used for the construction of culverts and for the conveyance of storm water, industrial wastes and sewage. Testing Concrete Pipe Sewer Lines by Low-Pressure Air Test Method This covers procedures for testing concrete pipe sewer lines when using the low-pressure air test method to demonstrate the integrity of the installed material and construction procedures. ASTM C969 Infiltration and Exfiltration Acceptance Testing of Installed Precast Concrete Pipe Sewer Lines This standard practice covers procedures for testing installed precast concrete pipe sewer lines using either waste infiltration or exfiltration acceptance limits to demonstrate the integrity of the installed materials and construction procedures. ASTM C1103 Joint Acceptance Testing of Installed Concrete Pipe Sewer Lines This practice covers procedures for testing the joints of installed precast concrete pipe sewer lines, when using either air or water under low pressure to demonstrate the integrity of the joint and the construction procedures. This practice is used for testing 27-in. and larger diameter precast concrete sewer lines utilizing gasket sealed joints. ASTM C1131 Least Cost (Life Cycle) Analysis of Concrete Culvert, Storm Sewer, and Sanitary Sewer Systems This practice covers procedures for least cost (life cycle) analysis (LCA) of materials, systems, or structures proposed for use in the construction of concrete culvert, storm sewer, and sanitary sewer systems. ASTM C1214 Concrete Pipe Sewerlines by Negative Air Pressure (Vacuum) Test Method This test method covers procedures for testing concrete pip sewerlines, when using the negative air pressure (vacuum) test method to demonstrate the integrity of the installed material and the construction procedures. This test method covers testing of 4 to 36-in. diameter circular concrete pipe sewerlines utilizing gasketed joints. ASTM C1244 Standard Test Method for Concrete Sewer Manholes by Negative Air Pressure (Vacuum) Test (Metric) This test method covers procedures for testing precast concrete manhole sections when using the vacuum test method to demonstrate the integrity of the installed materials and the construction procedures. This test method is used for testing concrete manhole sections utilizing mortar, mastic, or gasketed joints. ASTM C1433 (AASHTO M259) and (AASHTO M273) Precast Reinforced Concrete Box Sections for Culverts, Storm Drains and Sewers This specification covers single-cell precast reinforced concrete box sections intended to be used for the construction of culverts and for the conveyance of storm water, industrial wastes and sewage.
